  • 20" iMac and external Dell 24" : doesn't work with Mini DVI to DV adapter!

Help! My lovely Dell HP LP2475w 24" Monitor can't be used as an external monitor. The native screen resolution is 1900x1200 60Hz. The Apple site claims the iMac is capable of being able to output this resolution.
When the HP is plugged in via the apple mini to dvi adapter a (tested) DVI lead, it recognises the monitor, but can't bring it to life. Just an occasional flash. In the resolution listing for the HP, the native resolution 1900x1200 isn't listed.
Plugging a cruddy old 20" Samsung with the same DVI leads works with no problems.
I NEED to use the HP for my Photo editing, and phone calls to Apples support have proved fruitless.
Does anyone have a 20" Intel iMac and an HP LP2475w set up that works?
    Many thanks for any help.

I'm glad you got it working!
So do you have it working at full 1900x1200? I've noticed a few more oddities about my iMac on this monitor. First off is that initially I could only go as high as 1680x1050, which I think is the native resolution of the iMac. Now I actually see two more options, one of which being 1920x1200. This surprises me since you couldn't get it to a full 1920. Both resolutions produce the same size image on the HP, but the 1680x1050 is fuzzier. It's odd to me, same dimensions just a little less clear. I can stretch that using the HP's settings to full screen, but I cannot adjust the 1920/1200 image even though there is a black border around it.
Can you tell me what color settings you have on the HP? I have really struggled to find something I like. I actually like how things look in my iMac, and my MBP. I can't get things to look the same on the HP. I also feel like text is just a hair fuzzier on the HP than on either the iMac or MBP. I'm tempted to try a used 23" Apple Cinema Display, but I'm not sure I'll have any better luck with that. I mostly concerned about the image quality when I use my laptop, and for some reason I'm not getting great results with the HP or Dell externals that I've tried.

  • **imac vs. Dell XPS 720 or new 630--Help!!

    Hi,
I have been using windows and pc products for over 16 years. I am looking at getting the new imac 20" 2.4GHZ but, I am also looking at the Dell xps 720 and new 630. I am video editing quite a bit. I always use Vegas 8.0 Pro which is fantastic!(windows only) Now, I am aware of bootcamp and love that but, my concerns are a few things.
    1. The Dell xps 630 has a Nvidia 8800 GT video card vs the imacs ATI radeon hd 2600 pro. My question is will the 2600 hd keep up with higher end editing with an "imac 4gb configuration and 750 hard drive?"
    2. BootCamp question: I am aware that if I dedicate more than 32gb of space of the imac hard drive to windows, it will be ntfs and "not" writeable only readable. My question is, when I record some files onto the drive while using windows through bootcamp, can I record them direct to the "apple side" of the drive so I don't have to dedicate too much drive space to windows to begin with. I only want to use just a little of the drive to have my windows programs on it. So basically I'm saying, can I be working in windows and saving direct to apple side of the partition. And if I can, will that allow me access them using windows if they are saved on the mac part of the drive?
    3. Last question, if Dell xps has a far superior graphics card, why go with the imac? I really do LOVE that imac! I just want to know, with what my situation is, would it be wise to get the imac? Thank you all so much!!

I was faced with the same choice just a few months ago, so let me give you my perspective.
I have been a pc user for quite a number of years when it finally occurred to me that I was paying a premium price to help Microsoft debug the Windows os. The massive amount of bloatware that was included with EVERY manufacturer installed version of Windows started to get on my nerves. Plus the fact that daily virus updates were not an option, but a necessity.
If you wanted "safe" browsing, your firewall would block most sites, but you were foolish to turn it off.
Windows updates were just as bad. Your system would update willy-nilly without you having any idea what was being updated.
In short, it got to be a pain in the * just to go online.
With my iMac (20" 2.4 w/750gig hd) work is a pleasure. I have no fear of a virus attack on email or from any sites that I visit. Updates are a dream. I now check sortware updates once a week and there is usually nothing to update. My boot times are less than 20 seconds where on my pc it would usually take from 3 to 4 minutes.
If you get your iMac DO NOT get your memory from Apple, unless you prefer to be ripped a new one. I got my memory (4 Gig Ram) from OWC for less than $100.00 total, but there are many others out there.
    hope this helps.

  • Connecting my imac to my Dell laptop

    Hi there,
I'm trying to transfer files from my dell inspiron notebook to my imac using the file transfer wizard. The program keeps asking me to connect my computers, but I can't seem to find a cable that works. I've tried ethernet, USB and fire wire. Does anyone have a recommendation for a cable?
    Thanks a lot.

    HI and welcome to Discussions,
the 'File Transfer Wizard' only works when both machines are running Windows.
For transfering files from your Dell to your iMac when running OSX ypu can use the procedures mentioned here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518?viewlocale=en_US
If both your Dell and your iMac are running Windows, make sure that you have installed the BootCamp Drivers from the OSX Leopard DVD in order to access the needed hardware on your iMac for the transfer.
    Regards

  • IMac display with Dell Inspiron

I've searched and could not locate the answer to this. My "new" wife has brought a Dell Inspiron 6000 into the family. Not being a windows user - EVER I am looking to see if I can connec the dell to my iMac duo 20" to extend the display. Any suggestions? Thanks. Kevin

    I guess that's a Dell laptop...?
And I hope you mean to use the Dell as the second display, not the other way around.
Here's a clever application that uses the open source VNC protocol in a creative way.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
I makes any computer that can run a VNC client into a second display. The Screen Recycler program basically creates a virtual display and acts as the VNC server of that display. Any computer on the network running a VNC client can share that virtual screen. Make it run at +full screen+ mode and it looks like a regular secondary display. You can arrange it just like any display in System Preferences Displays pane.
I use it myself with an old PC laptop running Ubuntu Linux. Since I already have a real external display on my iMac, the Screen Recycler display is the THIRD display on my iMac.
The main drawback is speed. It is going over a network. For best results, use a wired connection at 100BaseT or better. But even a gigabit speeds, it won't refresh as fast as a display connected directly to a video port. But it works well for static windows. I keep my Mail window open on it at all times. Also, it IS a separate computer, so it won't automatically sleep when you sleep your Mac.

  • AEBS w/Quicksilver G4, OS 9 iMac and a Dell PC Win2000

I cannot get my Dell PC running Win2000 to connect to the internet via my Airport Extreme Base Station. I configured it with my G4. The G4 and the iMac are connected to via a switch and ethernet cables. They both access the internet just fine. The Dell sees the Airport network but will not connect. The base station is configured using WEP.
What settings on the Dell do I need to use? From all the playing around with it for the last two weeks, I have come to the conclusion it is a password issue. I have read all the Apple knowledge articles about the wep passwords but don't really understand them. Can someone tell me how to setup the dell and/or base station and a password that will work for both platforms?
    Thanks

I think all you need to do is provide the "Equivalent Network Password" of the AEBS to the Dell PC to work. Better yet, you may want to consider using WPA if your computers support it.

  • Linksys, iMac and a dell windows based laptop

I have a new iMac and a Lindsys wireless router (WRT54GS) that is there for use of my work Dell Laptop that is windows based.
When I but the cable directly into the mac, I get internet service through Comcast. But when I go through the router, I can't connect. Yesterday it worked through the Dell PC, but once I set-up the mac, it doesn't. My laptop recognizes the router, but since it's not connecting, I can't sign on to work stuff.
Does the router need to be reconfigured to recognize the mac? Hopefully this is a simple fix. Thanks to anyone who can help me!!!

I've read a number of posts regarding the use of
192.168.1.1 in the browser. Can you do this if
you're not connected to the internet?
Yes, you can connect directly to the router, even if you do not have an internet connection. You said you have a wrt54GS router. You need to get the latest firmware for that model which is 1.51.0 to solve your Mac problem. You probably have firmware 1.50.9 which has the same problem as firmware version 1.01.0 for the model wrt54G (ver 5 or 6). Just download the firmware to your desktop (You can do that with your Mac - just connect directly to the modem for the download, then reconnect to the router with an ethernet cable.) To upgrade the firmware, enter 192.168.1.1 in your browser (Safari works fine). If it asks for a username and password, leave the username blank and enter admin as the password. Then find the upgrade routine, point it at the downloaded firmware and upgrade. Note, you do not need to expand the firmware file, just download and point the upgrade routine at it. Make sure the upgrade is not interrupted as you can brick your router if you do - that's why you use an ethernet connection to the router. You may need to reset the router once or twice after upgrading.

  • Intel imac screen to Dell 2405fpw

I presently have a new intel core duo mac mini connected to a Dell 2405fpw 24" monitor which I love very much. But am thinking of getting an all-in-one machine and was looking at the 20" intel imac.
Am debating weather the 20" imac would be wide enought. How much of the screen area is there? I have not actually seen the computer except what I see online. I know it is much more powerful than the mini, but I just need a wide view area. the dell is considered a "wide aspect" monitor. what about the intel imac?
    suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks

I am considering the Dell 2405fpw with a Mac Mini for a relative. Any caveats? I have a 23" Apple studio display attached to my dual G5. I have had it for 2 years and am completely satisified. The resolution is 1920 x 1600. That is the same as the Dell 2405fpw 24". Obviously the pitch is different. There are lots of complaints in various places about anti aliasing and blurry fonts on the 17" and 20" iMacs. Try google/mac to get a sample.

  • 27 inch iMac to a 29 inch Dell Ultrasharp U2913WM monitor. What do I need to hook these two up?

27 inch iMac to a 29 inch Dell Ultrasharp U2913WM monitor. What do I need to hook these two up?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That monitor has got a lot of ports you can use. The easiest and cheapest way to connect the iMac to the Dell monitor is through a Mini DisplayPort cable, because you do not need any adapter.
Another way you have is to connect it through HDMI. In this case, you need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable
