ELearning for Large Scale System Change

Our next project is training for a large scale company wide system upgrade. Our users are very dependent on the software that will be replaced and several departments will need to learn their job anew. Any suggestions on how to use eLearning to increase adoption and comprehension of the new software?

Hi Lincoln,
I've worked on a number of large-scale IT change projects for international clients. I can make a few suggestions, some Captivate related, some more general eLearning related.
On projects like this I tend to produce three types of training: face-to-face, interactive tutorials/simulations & job aids. Ideally the three are planned together, allowing you to create a single instructional design plan. You want people to be introduced to the system, learning to be reinforced and then everybody to be supported.
The face-to-face training usually contains lots of show and tell, where the users are shown how to do tasks and then have a go at doing this themselves. Ideally a number of small tasks are shown and repeated, then they are all brought together by getting the learners to follow realistic scenarios that require all of the discrete tasks to be performed together. I find that lots of training doesn't integrate deeply with people's real-life jobs and the use of real world scenarios helps to improve retention and performance. I have made materials where the show-and-tell pieces have been pre-recorded, which you can do with Captivate.
The interactive tutorials are usually used as follow-on material to the face-to-face modules, allowing learners to go through simulations with guidance when they do something unexpected, though sometimes there is no face-to-face training and the interactive tutorials have to deliver all of the teaching. Sometimes these include sections that merely show users and ask questions afterwards. Sometimes they become very complex branching scenarios. I usually build all of this in Captivate, though I do find it quite buggy and frustrating at times.
Finally, I build small job aids. These are very specific and show how to do a well defined function, such as changes an existing customer's address. Sometimes these are Captivate movies, sometimes they are PDF files, often they are implemented as both. They can be embedded and/or linked from the system help screens and FAQs, as well as used in support responses and post-training emails. The movies tend to be short and sweet: 30-120 seconds long.
In an ideal world the number of job aids grows rapidly after implementation in response to user support requests, though in reality I often have to anticipate what users are going to find difficult and create all of these prior to launch.
If you are going to use Captivate for your project, then I suggest that you test, test and test again before agreeing what you will deliver. It's a great bit of software, in theory, but it is quite buggy. I'm working on a project with CP6.1 and I'm having lots of audio synch problems and video corruption issues publishing my final work to as MP4 videos.
In terms of effort, my rule of thumb is 20% planning, 60% design and scripting and 20% implementation.
I hope this helps,
David

  • What design aids for large-scale application (using LV6i) exist?

I have a large-scale application that includes analog and digital I/O, motion control, multiple temperature readings, Ethernet communication, RS-232, DDE and ActiveX controls for communicating with other commercial software. We have to improve the system performance and ease the pain of maintaining and upgrading. What aids are there for large-scale application design and development?

This doesn't exactly count as development "tools" but I can send you copies of three papers that I found when I was just getting started with LV. They can show you how to think about your problem--and that is really the hardest (and most important) part.
Contact me directly and I'll email them to you. The archive is to large to post.

  • About shell scripts for large-scale automation of  encoding tasks

in the user menu of Compressor, it said that we can use the command line to write shell scripts for large-scale automation of encoding tasks.
I would like to have more information about the shell script for compressor, is that any document link?
    Thanks

You can use a script function to set-up a more secure environment that you call at the start of every admin script. This could be your main stamp album for stuff that can be moved there.
A few more stamps to add to the collection (be sure to read up on them before use):
    1) reset the command hash
    hash -r
    2) prevent core dumps
    ulimit -H -c0
    3) set the IFS
    4) clear all aliases  (see unalias -a)
Also you can remove the ALL from sudo and add explicit commands to the the sudoers file. There's a lot of fine tuning you can do in sudoers - inc. env variables as teekay said.
But I'm no expert so best to check all of the above.

  • Swap space/dump devices for large RAM systems

We are in the process of changing our standards for our server builds and need some input. Currently, we match the swap space on local disk with the size of RAM. I know this isn't necessary for "swap" any more, but we use the swap area as the dump device as well, so we are sure to have enough space there to contain a full memory dump if the server crashes.
Now we have systems coming in with 128 or even 192 GB of ram. They contain only two disks (146GB), which we mirror. Obviously there isn't enough space on these disks for 192GB of swap or a dedicated dump deivce.
We need the ability to capture full dumps when we have a crash, probably with a dedicated dump device. Should we start ordering SCSI disk enclosuers for this purpose? Can we make a SAN volume our dump device?
What is everyone else doing with these larger RAM systems?

Compressed dumps have been supported in UNIX flavors for many years, so you need to dig further into it. It is supported in linux, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't in Solaris. Tru64UNIX, HP-UX, AIX, and others all provide this capability.
True, you can't get internal disks bigger than the 146 on Sparc platforms, but you could attach a "boot array", like a storagetek D240 system, or iScsi or fiber attached storage. The only caveat is whether Solaris, in the throes of a crash, still has the drivers loaded that can address an external disk subsystem. That would have to be investigated with SUN. And these arrays support the new 1TB SATA disk drives. We are deploying 6140 shelves with 16TB per shelf. Simply amazing...

  • 6.0.1 ready for large scale deployment?

I have a 210 we are in the process of migrating to, at the end of the migration we will have 700 or so 2800 IOS firewalls. We are half way through the process and already MARS is having CPU issues, although I think this may be bug related. Is 6.0.1 ready for a large scale deployment and heavy load? Im hoping this may bring the cpu down a little but I do not want to introduce other issues.
    Thanks

I ended up doing a clean install of a MARS50, originally 4.3.6, and still have problems with graphgen shutting down.
I have no support on my MARS 50 so I'm stuck waiting for a possible future upgrade beyond 6.0.1. It's odd that the same ISO install gives different results on the same hardware. MARS in not exactly an "appliance" like a PIX but still...ISO based installations should produce identical installations

  • Best and most secure tracking option for large scale iPad deployment?

Hi, we are deploying iPads to hotel rooms on a large scale basis and need to find an appropriate solution to securely track them in case they are stolen.
We are actually considering Find my iPhone for its simplicity, but the 100 devices limit and also the fact it is relatively easy to disable poses a problem.
On the other spectrum there is AirWatch which is very expensive.
I was wondering if any other options are available for this?
    Best regards
    Florian

MobileIron Sentry iPad app, enterprise IT departments can track iPhones and iPads, view device inventory, block offending or compromised devices, and remotely wipe stolen, lost or compromised units. The application also enables remotely suspending email access for active staff, just-terminated employees, and others.
    Just read about it.

  • Are there any issues and potential solutions for large scale partitioning?

I am looking at a scenario that a careful and "optimised" design has been made for a system. However, It is still resulted in thousands of entities/tables due to the complex business requirements. The option of partitions must also be investigated due to large amount of data in each table. It could potentially result in thousands partitions on thousands tables, if not more.
Also assume that powerful computers, such as SPARC M9000, can be employed under such a scenario.
Keen to hear what your comments are. It will be helpful if you can back up your statements with evidence and keep in the context of this scenario.

I did see your other thread, but kept away from it because it seemed to be getting a bit heated. Some points I did notice:
People suggested that a design involving "thousands" of entities must be bad. This is neither true not nor unusual. An EBS database may have fifty to a hundred thousand entities, no problem. It is not good or bad, just necessary.
The discussion of "how many partitions" got stuck on whether Oracle really can support thousand of partitions per table. Of course it can - though you may find case studies that if you go over twenty or thirty thousand for a table, performance may degrade (shared pool issues, if I remember correctly).
There was discussion of how many partitions anyone needs, with people suggesting "not many". Well, if you range partition per hour with 16 hash sub-partitions (not unreasonable in, for example, a telephone system) you have 384 per day which build up quite quickly unless you merge them.
You own situation has never been fully defined. A few hundred million rows in a few TB is not unusual at all. But when you say "I don't have a specific problem to solve" alarm bells ring: you are trying to solve a problem that does not exist? If you get partitioning right, the benefits can be huge; get it wrong, and it can be a disaster. Don't do it just because you can.  You need to identify a problem and prove, mathematically, that your chosen partitioning strategy will fix it.

  • Migration to 802.1x for large scale Ethernet network

    Hi all,
I have a very large wired-only Ethernet network which I would like to migrate to 802.1x for stronger authentication of end users. The problem I have is that there are long chains of legacy swtiches which do not support 802.1x (the topology of the network is a complete tree of switches). As far as I know, 802.1x is port based.
    So here is the issue:
    - the replacement of all switches will take a very long time, but I would like to have all end users authenticated asap
    - switches supporting .1x will initially only be located at the roots of the tree. There will still be legacy switches not supporting .1x between end users and newer switches.
    - authentication of users on a port of a new switch will be shared between several end users.
Do you know if it possible to enable authentication of all users but having only enabled 802.1x in some more central locations first?
    Cheers,
    Benoit

    IEEE 802.1x Authentication
These are the IEEE 802.1x authentication configuration guidelines:
?When IEEE 802.1x authentication is enabled, ports are authenticated before any other Layer 2 or Layer 3 features are enabled.
?If you try to change the mode of an IEEE 802.1x-enabled port (for example, from access to trunk), an error message appears, and the port mode is not changed.
?If the VLAN to which an IEEE 802.1x-enabled port is assigned changes, this change is transparent and does not affect the switch. For example, this change occurs if a port is assigned to a RADIUS server-assigned VLAN and is then assigned to a different VLAN after re-authentication.
If the VLAN to which an IEEE 802.1x port is assigned to shut down, disabled, or removed, the port becomes unauthorized. For example, the port is unauthorized after the access VLAN to which a port is assigned shuts down or is removed.

  • Enhance image/logo for larger scale use

I have been given an image of a company logo to use for a variety of mediums through advertising. The logo they have given me is very small, I want to either enlarge it or create a higher resolution version of the image which I can then scale up/down according to my use for. Not sure which is the best tool to use for this, perhaps Photoshop may be better, which I have tried using to achieve this (my skills in Illustrator are very limited). The problem with the original image, is the logo (mainly text-based), the edges aren't smooth and when I increase the size of the logo, it becomes even more pixelated/rough round the edges and curves. Can anyone point out some suggestions for me please in how to achieve this? I would be very grateful for any help, thanks.

    raviipatel,
You should get/find the right fonts and use the Type Tool, then use other means to get the effects/positioning.
If you cannot get a vector version and see for yourself or get the font information from the company, you may try

  • Storage solution for large scale video editing?

I need to edit my way through over 1TB of captured 1080p HD video footage. I have a more than competent Mac Pro to do the job but the internal drives are quite full so rendering will be an issue. The footage I need to edit is currently on a Western Digital My Book.
What is a good reasonably priced system that I can use to edit through and back up to?
    I'm thinking about 3-4TB size.
I've been looking at the Drobo but it seems that it won't be able to pull the clips through to the timeline fast enough.
    Many Thanks

I'd suggest looking at the OWC Mercury Rack Mount or Desktop disk systems. I'd get a bare unit and put in my own drives - Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, 7200.12 or ES.2 drives or WD Caviar SE 16 or Caviar Black drives. I'd stay away from any green or low-power drives at this point. You can do this for less than about £500.
You will probably want to put an eSATA card in your MacPro so you can connect via eSATA rather than FW800.
Personally, I'd rather myself use a JBOD unit w/ 4-1TB drives inside but most of the multi-unit enclosures these days are RAID only. One model of the OWC Rack series enables 4xJBOD via eSATA.
I would also get my footage off that MyBook ASAP.

  • Performance for large scale of objects

I'm working on a project that requires thousands of buttons to be shown on a page. Each button presents an object instance. It tooks more than 20 seconds to display the page. Is there any way to improve the performance? or any other faster approaches? Thanks.

Thank for your reply. I should have described my question clearer.
I'm using commandButton on a JSP as one of the graphic view of my JSF application. There is only one data bean class on the server for this view and I create a button for each instance of the bean class. Is JavaScript on the client-side a good idea, but its appearance may vary for different browsers, if I understand it correctly.
With thousands of buttons I have to use scroll bar on the content area that contains the buttons. One approach that I'm thinking is to implement the scrolling function in a way similar to the paginating function - loads only the data needed for the display area. Whenever the scroll bar is clicked, I will load a new set of data just sufficient for the display. Is this a possible approach?

  • Typical/Common large-scale ACE deployment or designs?

I am deploying several ACE devices and GSS devices to facilitate redundancy and site load balancing at a couple of data centers.  Now that I have a bunch of experience with the ACE and GSS, are there typical or common ACE deployment methods?  Are there reference designs?  I have been looking, and haven't really found any.
Even if they are not Cisco 'official' methods, I'm wondering how most people, particularily those who deploy a lot of these or deploy them with large-scale systems, typically do it.
I'm using routed mode (not one-arm mode) and I'm wondering if most people use real server (in my case, web servers) with dual-NICs to support connectivity to back-end systems?  Or do people commonly just route it all through the ACE?
Also, how many VIPs and real servers have been deployed in a single ACE 4710 device?  I'm trying to deploy about 700 VIPs with about 1800 Real Servers providing content to those VIPs.
How do people configure VIPs, farms, and sticky?  I'm looking for how someone who wants to put a large ammount of VIPs and real servers into the ACE would succeed at doing it.  I have attempted to add a large number in the 'global' policy-map, but that uses too many PANs.
I have tried a few methods myself, and have run into the limit on Policy Action Nodes (PANs) in the ACE device.  Has anyone else hit this issue?  Any tips or tricks on how to use PANs more conservitively?
Any insight you can share would be appreciated.
    - Erik

As far as i can see from your requirements i suggest you create 1 ear file for your portal and 1 ear file per module.
The ear file from your portal is the main application and the ear files of your modules are shared libraries that contain the taskflows. These taskflows can be consumed in the portal application.
This way, you can easily deploy 1 module without needing to deploy the main application or the other application.
It also let you devide your team of developer so everybody can work on a sepperate module without interfering.
On a sidenote: when you have deployed your main application, and later you create a new module, than you have to register that module to your application so then you will need to redeploy your portal but if you update an existing module, you won't need to redeploy your portal.
As for the security, all your modules will inherit the security model of your portal application.

  • Please help: large scale Printing question

A Client asked me to do a backdrop for a play that is 10' high by 18' wide. She wont give me the number of where shes getting it printed from for some stupid reason so i cant ask them directly, my question which is this: What size and format should my photoshop file be in for large scale printing like that? Right now my file is 10" high by 18" wide and 300dpi. and its a Psd right now of course. Any help would be awesome.

    hu instinct,
Basically, when scaled the artwork has identical appearences at identical proportional distances  (looks as if it has the same resolution); in other words: when you look at a 1:1 print of your present 10x18" artwork at a certain distance, the 10x18' backdrop will look the same to the audience/actors/instructor/whoever at 12 times the distance, so if it looks nice to you at 1' or 1.5' or2', it will look just as nice to them at 12' or 15' or 18'.

  • How to change Org Unit for larg number of emplyees

    Dear Guru's,
My client has uploaded wrong Org Units while hiring, now that has to be changed for larg number of employees.
Can any one suggest me how can we do this for larg number of employees?
Thanks in advance for your kind suggestions.
    Regards,
    Srinivas

    Hello Srinivas;
By saying uploaded wrong organizational units, do you mean that organizational structure in PPOME is wrong or employee - position assignment is wrong?
If employee - position assignment is wrong then I suggest you to use batch input program or use LSMW as you have to change it via personnel action - PA40
If organizational structure is wrong, then do you have correct organizational structure in another system like test or qa?
If you have correct organizational structure then you can directly transport it from one system to other but if you don't then you first need to correct the organizational structure and then run LSMW or batch input.
    Regards;
    Okan
