Electrical explosion with original iPad 2 charger

My 5 year old son was using his iPad 2 when this happened.  It was dramatic enough to throw the breaker.  The iPad was still running, but is it even safe to let him use it?  I'm afraid to plug anything in to it now.  Should I contact the CPSC?  There's no Apple store where I live (on an island), and Apple wants $25 just to talk to me.

I'd be amazed if the ipad still works.  Buy new connector and try. You could plug connector in first then power second. Don't touch anything.  May want to connect to surge protector.  Protector will drop before power line.  I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fuse on the 5volt line.
The charger reduces the voltage down to what the iPad can accept.  From this page, it looks like the iPad accepts 5volts.  In my knowledge of electronics, 5 volts is safe.

Here is all about the use of the thirty pins.  Light on how charging works. USB charging is at 5 volts. See comments.

Sorry, but what is a Kensington K9294? I can find no mention of that product ID on the web, not even on Kensington's site. Do you mean the K39294, the KeyFolio keyboard/case?

  • If I use the 10W power pack (received with my iPad) to charge my iPhone 4S hurt my phone battery?

Will the 10W USB Power adapter (I got w/my iPad) hurt my iPhone 4S?

No. The iPhone will draw as much power as it requires to charge its battery. It cannot draw too much, nor can it draw more than the adapter is capable of providing.
Conversely, you may also use the iPhone 4S charger to charge the iPad. It will just take longer to charge than it would with the iPad's charger.

I'm having some problems with my ipad and charging it. I am having to leave it in charge for a lot longer, but when I take it out and want to use it the battery is still not completely full and goes down a lot faster than usual. The other day, I had charged  my iPad overnight so that I could take it to university with me for the day, and when I had switched it on the next day the battery was on 5% and I had not used it since charge.

Your battery may be dying. THey are only good for so many charges/discharges. If you have an apple store near by make an appointment and have them check itout

  • Having problems with new ipad and charging?? Help me please

I have the new ipad with retina display and it had that new smaller charger as you probably already know, well I've only had this ipad for about three months and I've already gone through two chargers for the same problem which is When I plug it in it does not charge unless I unplug it and plug it in about 40 times and then it starts to charge! Do you think it may have something to do with the ipad itself or am I just getting faulty chargers? It's not that cheap to keep re-buying these chargers ):

Since your iPad is quite new, why are you "re-buying" chargers?  Are you not using the charger that came in the box -- the original Apple charger?  If you were doing that, and did not mishandle the charger (e.g., tug on the cord to pull the charger out of the wall socket), Apple would take care of the charger under its warranty.
So I suspect you're either mishandling the charger (not likely), or using some third party charger (more likely).
If it's the original Apple charger, and you're not mishandling it, contact Apple for assistance.

  • Windows 8.1 does not work with original iPad

I have a new HP Split 13 x 2 machine.  I cannot get my original iPad to get recognized.  I'm pretty sure it worked just fine when I had only Windows 8, but I upgraded a few days after I got the machine and now when I plug it in I continually hear the sound it makes when a device is plugged in, but it sounds like its getting connected and then disconnected and it keeps doing that over and over.  I've reinstalled iTunes with no luck.  iTunes says 'iTunes could not connect to this iPhone.  An unknown error occurred (0xE8000084).  I have the latest drivers for both Windows, HP, and Intel.  Anythoughts?  It works just fine on my old HP laptop with Vista.

Hi aclose26, welcome to the HP Forums. iTunes not recognizing iPad in Windows 8.1 seems common. This thread on Apple's forums has a lot of possible fixes. You should research this here:  windows 8.1 itunes wont recognize ipad

  • I have a problem with my ipad 3 charging

I have a problem in charging my ipad 3.
It doesn't charge unless I reboot it ( hold the sleep and home button for ten seconds until the screen turns black)
And If I unplug it after rebooting end plug It in the charger again it won't charge
Note:     I am using apple's original ipad  3. charger

    Hi Omar1510,
If resetting your iPad allows it to charge, but only temporarily, you may want to make sure that you have your data backed up and try restoring the device (you may want to test the charging before reloading your data). You may find the following article helpful:

  • I have an ipad2 can i change it with new ipad without charge?, I have an ipad2 can i change it with new ipad without charge?

Hi,i have an ipad 2 can i change it with new ipad without pey charge ?

No. Apple does not do trade-ins. Sell the iPad 2 and use the money
toward an iPad 4. If you are still within the return window of the retailer
where you purchased the iPad 2, return it and buy an iPad 4.

  • Really weird WiFi problem with original iPad, please help!!!

Hey everyone so I recently inherited an original iPad from my uncle who stopped using it because of WiFi issues. Unfortunately he didn't do much to try to figure out the problem and there's no warranty on it but I'd really like to fix it!
The problem is that it doesn't display nearly any available networks under the WiFi settings, but it DOES seem to show and connect to unsecured networks (and works really well...I'm in a hotel typing on it right now). But at home, in the hotel room, at my uncles place, etc...no networks show up. Also I can't connect to them if I enter manually.
So far I've tried a hard reset, fully restoring, resetting network settings, and resetting all settings...I would take it to Apple but there's no warranty
Any ideas of how I can fix this potentially?
    Thanks!

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Static electric on the new iPad when charging

When I'm charging the new iPad, touching on the back cover will give static electric. Would it damage the device in long run?

Was gifted an Ipad missing an AC Adapter and cable. Bought new cable and adapter. Made the mistake of buying and using a 5 Volt adapter. Made the mistake of using the Ipad when it was being charged (plugged into the electric outlet). Made the mistake of returning and picking up the Ipad after walking across a rug. Blew out that 5 Volt adapter which no longer would charge another suitable (5 Volt correct) device. Bought 10 Volt adapter which would not charge my Ipad as well.
iOS devices charge of USB specification that means 5 Volts ONLY.
A 10 Volt charger would damage the device.
I believe you are confusing Watts & Volts.
Many USB chargers have a higher amperage (that means they can supply more current, not Volts). That translates to more Watts (overall power output).
It allows iPads to charge faster because they have more battery to fill.
The standard iPad charger is 10Watts (the spec isn't visible on Apple.com, so this is from external sources).
iPhones usually have chargers that supply 5Watts
    The safest option…
Use an Apple charger that is rated for the device… as you can see Apple sell 5 Watt & 12 Watt supplies for iPads
http://store.apple.com/us/ipad/ipad-accessories/power (search for iPhone chargers etc).
None of this helps you speedgo, sorry. I don't know if static could cause issues. I would move it to another wall outlet, try other rooms - if it still happens take it to an Apple store & ask them for advice it may also happen at the store if the device or charger is faulty.

  • OK to charge iPhone 5S with 10W iPad 2 charger?

Is there anything wrong with charging my iPhone 5S (or my wifes iPhone 5) with my old 10W iPad 2 charger (and my new iPhone lightening cable)?  Can I do that without causing adverse battery issues?  Thanks!

Not significantly faster in my experience.
However, if you use the iPhone charger for the iPad, it will charge, but VERY slowely and sometimes if you are using it while plugged into the iPhone charger, the iPad will actually lose a charge, because the iPhone charger is a bit small for the iPad. But it won't cause damage.
