Elements 10 and Lightroom 3

I'm considering purchasing Lightroom 3 and using it in conjuntion with my Elements 10.  I have just begun to shoot in Camera Raw format and I want to get the best end result from my editing.  I have read that the organizer in Lightroom is superior to Elements Organizer and that there are more options to editing the raw file in Lightroom.  I would like any feedback you all might have for me.  I don't want to have too many programs that do the same things.
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Yes you are correct. Lightroom has the full CS5 raw engine, not available in Elements. But LR4 will soon be out; so you may want to wait, or buy LR3 at a good discount and then pay to upgrade to LR4.
If you want to try the LR4 beta version you can download it here. It has a cool new Map and Book module not in LR3 and a new raw engine which will be available in the forthcoming CS6.

  • Elements 13 and Lightroom 4

What, if any, problems should I expect with compatibility of Elements 13 and Lightroom 4? (I have not previously used Lightroom. And I plan to upgrade from Elements 10 to Elements 13.) I will be using Apple's Yosemite. Thanks very much.

    Thanks very much.
My tentative plan has been to do as you suggest in the second section of your reply — to use the Lightroom Library Module and Develop Module and then use other editors when I need more features than in the Develop Module.
My original post was prompted by concern that because Lightroom 4 is older than PSE13, there might be some problem in using PSE13 as an external editor in Lightroom 4.

  • Elements 9 and Lightroom 4

I am considering using Lightroom 4 in conjuction with my current elements 9. Some comment no problem -  fully compatible while others
comment the way photos are loaded into elements 9 will not necessarily show all the edits made in lightroom 4. Also, if you use the 2012  system on your raw files they are not compatible with the ACR version in elements and the changes will look wrong. Is there value in these views.
Do I keep with elements 9 and get lightroom 3 or get elements 10 and lightroom 4. Any advice would be appreciated

I'm not sure about compatibility with Elements 9. But IF ACR isn't fully compatible with Lightroom 4 then you can have Lightroom render a TIF file that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments and then open that in Elements. It works seamlessly. Even if Lightroom and Elements 9 were fully compatible, once you make changes in Elements a TIF or PSD file has to be created anyway. So you can work with Lightroom 4 and be completely productive with it.

  • I have Elements 11 (and Lightroom). I just bot a SONY   RX100-II camera.

I tried to load the photos shot in RAW, but nada. I need to know how to get the program I need so that I can use Elements 11 and Lightroom with this camera, shooitng in RAW. Am leaving for Cuba in 5 days.

If you update to the latest lightroom 5.2, that should open the Sony RX100-II files.
Unfortunatly pse11 can only use up to camera raw 7.4 and your files require camera raw 8.2
Photoshop elements 12 is able to update to camera raw 8.2 though.

  • Does Photoshop CS5, Elements 8 and Lightroom 3 support Windows 7 64 bit Home Edition?

Does Photoshop CS5, Elements 8 and Lightroom 3 support Windows 7 64 bit Home Edition?  Any issue installing these products on a new PC when I already have it installed on another PC?  I am getting a new PC to replace XP machine I already have.

Yes, Photoshop runs on all editions of Windows 7 as far as I know.
And the Photoshop EULA does give you the option to install and activate the software on a second machine.  Once you no longer need the XP system, assuming it's still functional, just deactivate the Adobe software on it and you'll be able to have the same flexibility again in the future.
If ever you have a licensing agreement question, all the EULAs are online here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/eulas/
A side note:  Windows Home Premium may do all you need for now, but keep in mind there is a Windows Anytime Upgrade you can buy in the future that will allow you to move up to a higher edition of Windows 7 later if you should feel you need more features.
This page has some information on that, and also describes the edition differences pretty thoroughly.  I especially like the nice table they've built:

i am having problems with  Olympus .orf  which cannot be read by Elements 10 and Lightroom 4. Both provide an error message saying that the file is not recognized. Any ideas?  minzen

That camera model is too new for your programs. Every camera has its own raw format and ACR must be updated to include the info for each new model as it comes out. The workaround would be to download the free Adobe DNG converter and use that to convert your ORFs to DNGs that your version of Camera Raw can read.

To put it simply - no but Lightroom can import from the Elements Organizer.

  • Different file count between Photo Elements 12 and Lightroom 5.

    To Whom it might concern:
When I check properties the file count in Photo Elements 12 is different than that of Lightroom 5.
In one case Photo Elements shows 743 files and 51 folders and lightroom shows 734 files.
I counted each a every file and found Lightroom to have the correct count and Elements the same count
but properties shows a count of 743.
    Please answer.

  • Does Elements 11 and Lightroom 5 integrate simply together?

My friend has CS5 on his computer and when I play with it very ocasionally I find it a total nightmare and run a mile.  I just don't understand it.   Not wanting to waste my money (Yorkshireman!), I see the need for a Photoshop product to help remove the odd item from pphotos and maybe alter beyond the scope of LR3 certain bits.
If I have to step up from LR3 to LR5, should an idiot like me find it a doddle moving and editing pics backwards and forwards between the two packages?  As i find LR3 very intuitive, would it be the same with Elements 11?
Any ideas and members thoughts on this would be most appreciated.  Thanks.
    Patrick

Photoshop Elements workflow and commands are FAR more similar to the full Photoshop than it is to Lightroom.  I think you will find the Elements learning curve fairly steep if you get into it with any depth.  If you are going to use Elements to do just the heavy lifting of cloning than that is fairly simple.  In my work flow, I find I can do 97% of my photos fully in Lightroom 5 and only take the rest into Elements for more cloning.  You will also have a learning curve to go from PV2010 in LR3 to PV2012 in LR5 with the new develop sliders but as Jim said, it is WELL worth the upgrade

  • Photoshop Elements 12 and Lightroom 5.6

Does any one know if it is possible to import star ratings from Photoshop Elements Organizer into Lightroom? I did some rating of images in Photoshop Elements Organizer then imported the images into my Lightroom 5.6 catalog. Unfortunately, the star rating didn't import. The keywords imported. I don't understand why the keywords imported but the star ratings didn't. Do I need to import the Organizer catalog into Lightroom to get the star ratings?

Usually that means that lightroom sent over the photo in 16 bits/channel and you want 8 bits/channel in order to use layers in photoshop elements.
After you open the image from lightroom into photoshop elements you can go Image>Mode and click on 8 bits/channel
or in the Lightroom Preferences (Edit)>External Editing set the Bit Depth to 8 bits/component

  • Recommendation Needed Re: Elements 8 and Lightroom V.1 & V.3 Beta

I have ~150+ files on my hard drive holding 250+ photo's each with additional sub -sub categories below that.  I have not used keywords to date and admit I now have a mess on my hands, unable to locate what is needed.  I have Lightroom v.1 now but have never really used the program (shame on me).  I have Elements 7 and intend on getting v.8.  I will be purchasing LR V.3 when released as I am under the impression if I work with V.3 Beta, I may not be able to transfer my work to V.3 when released, so here are my questions.  (1) Is my last statement true?  (21) Should I add keywords in Elements or Lightroom? (2) If in LR, should I do it in LR v.1; v.3 Beta or wait until the final version of LR v.3? (3) is it easier to add key words in Elements or LR?
My goal is to do it in the most expedious manner and would really like to start digging myself out of my 'self made' hole right away.  Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

In my opinion, I would use LR3b if keywording is your main activity before purchasing LR3 in a couple months.  Support for PSE catalogs has been spotty in LR.
The LR3B release notes say it will be able to read LR1, LR2, and LR3b catalogs, so perhaps any of those versions' keywords would come across.
Of course if LR3 has some innovation in keywording hat people have been requesting, you might wish you would have waited.
If you want to experiment with the current keyword-import capabilities between Elements and LR2, then you can download an dinstall the LR2 trial, with the understanding it'll expire in 30 days.
PSE8 came out way after LR2 so I doubt LR2 can import PSE8 catalogs, but if LR2 cannot import PSE7 catalogs, then I wouldn't expect LR3 would be that much better, but who knows.
If your photos are all JPGs and PSE can write keywords inot the JPGs, then that is a different story from LR importing a PSE catalog, directly.  You have some experimentation to do.  You could even try to see what LR3b does with PSE7 JPGs with embedded keywords.

  • Will Photoshop Elements 11 and Lightroom 4 support conversation of RAW files from a Nikon D800?

I'm currently using Photoshop Elements 9 and must convert RAW files from my Nikon D800 to .dng files before processing using a added converted.  I'm considering upgrading to either Elements 11 or Lightroom 4 but want to know if either of these programs will support the nikon D800 RAW files without having to go through this extra cumbersome step.   Additionally, if I do go with Lightroom 4, will the transition be easy or difficult and what problems might I encounter?

Yes the D800 is fully supported in both applications.
You would certainly benefit in processing your 36mp raw files using Lightroom if you have a 64bit PC or Mac with additional memory (RAM). The Lightroom develop module is where you do all the editing and you get the benefit of the full CS6 raw engine in an intuitive interface.
If you regularly use the Elements Organizer you should understand Lightroom quite easily.
Why not download the free trial of LR4 and test for 30 days.

  • What are the differences between Elements 10 and Lightroom 3?

Hi,  I have Elements 6 on Macbook Pro (so use iPhoto and am happy with this as organiser and basic editor)  and wish to upgrade, but I need information / advice on the differences and haven't found a comparison to enable an informed choice.

Lightroom is a non-destructive editor and great for doing bulk adjustments’ and saving your own presets although you will only get maximum benefit if you shoot in raw. You will still need elements as Lightroom doesn’t have layers and many of the tools used for pixel editing, and adding text, however the Lightroom Library integrates well with the elements editor.

  • Elements Organizer and Lightroom Catalog

When using Lightroom 5 and Elements 12 how are the calalog and organizer synced? And how should files be saved.
In Lightroom I chose to edit a  photo in Elements when I saved it and went back to Lightroom I could not locate it. It was saved as a .psd file.
When found it in Finder I could not Import it into Llightroom.

Perhaps you made the mistake of using Save As rather than Save. So you will have created a new file which Lightroom knows nothing about.
You need to start the round trip from LR as follows and use the save command (Cmd+S) not save as:
    1) Cmd+E in the Library to export selected image with develop settings (I choose PSD)
    2) Edit in Photoshop Elements; then Cmd+S to replace (overwrite) Lightroom export copy
    3) Cmd+W to close in Photoshop Elements and update Lightroom thumbnail.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 and Lightroom transfer/sharing problem

I'm new to Adobe Lightroom 5 and Photoshop Elements 12.   I open a Lightroom image in Photoshop Elements 12 by using Photo-->Edit In--> PSE12.  I make a change in PSE12, and then "save."  I understand that I'm supposed to overwrite the default file name.  But, when I go back to LR, my PSE changes are not saved.  What am I doing wrong?

I have LR 5 and PSE 12 and the interaction works fine for me. When I select the Edit in PSE option in LR, a TIFF file is created in LR, which is then being opened in PSE. Once done with editing in PSE, I choose Save, which brings me the overwrite file dialog and the TIFF file save settings dialog (compression, etc.) afterwards. Once saved, the TIFF is visible in LR with the changes.
Here's a question - when you open the TIFF file you just saved from PSE in PSE again, do you see the changes ? If not, the problem is in PSE not saving the changes correctly.
If you do, the problem is with the file not being shown properly in LR. Check the file structure in an external tool (Windows explorer or Finder). Do you see the TIFF file ? Is there only one or perhaps some others with the beginning of the file name ? What is the file save date on the TIFF(s) ? That might give a clue as to what can be wrong with the process.
