Elements 11 backup

I am using Elements 11. My photos are on an external drive, not the C drive where the program resides. Can I backup my catalog to a second external hard drive. I was told  by tech support while using Elements 10 that I would not be able to do a backup unless the photos where on the same drive as the software.

Nonsense !
The catalog is like a list where the location of the files is stored : drive identification and full folder path. When PSE creates a backup it stores a copy of the catalog and of each picture file in a dedicated folder. Even if your pictures are spread over internal or external drive, USB thumbs, CDs or DVDs, the information about drives is saved.
On the other end, you can restore your files in the same location or elsewhere, for example in a new external drive.
The best rule is of course to store your backup in a different drive than your pictures.

    Hi and thanks in advance, I took my computer into a tech repair shop and they said they couldn't handle it but I needed to call Adobe.

    2. Using Adobe Elements 9.0 have never had a problem backing up onto an expansion drive.
    3. Now I get the following: Your system is low on disk space and Elements Organizer cannot perform this function. Try removing some files to free up space."
    4. I have about 500 GB free on my C drive and my back up files are about 500 GB. I have lots of videos and scanned photos.
    5. How can I back up and what can I do in the future as I plan on continuing archiving large files.
    THanks for any help.

      You could think about purchasing an external hard drive. They have now come down in price and often start with 1Tb or 2Tb of storage. Some even come with a fast fire wire connection for fast transfer.
    Make a full back up (Ctrl+B in Organizer)
    You can then make periodic incremental backups which will be much quicker.

  • Elements backup freezes

    How do I prevent photshop elements 11 from freezing when backing up. It won't go past "Please wait while Elelments organizer prepares for backup.

    Hi,
    I should have replied back to this post after I found a solution that worked for me.  After looking at many different options, including deleting all of my largest files, reinstalling photoshop, etc., I found that a few other people had success making a new catalog and then copying all the files into that.  I did this and was then able to backup the new catalog with no issues.  Weird.  Adobe should really fix whatever causes this.  It is very irritating.  I would also make sure to write all the keyword tag info to the photos before you make a new catalog and make sure you are set with everything before you even think about deleting the first catalog.

  • PS Elements 5. Trouble restoring backup catalog - Organiser freezes

    Old computer died and i re-installed PS Elements 5.0 on a Win8.1 machine. The first time instal indicated i was working on "My catalog". I ran a restore catalog function to restore my backup, original "John" catalog. The restore appeared to work ok i.e. the backup file *.tly was processed but my photos didn't show in Organiser. Have since uninstalled Elements 5.0 and reinstalled. On the new instal Organiser is looking for catalog "john" and just freezes. An explorer search cannot find "john" on the computer. How can I either reset my computer for a new clean instal so I end up with "my catalog" and can try a restore again OR how can i restore my "john" catalog without using Organiser.  I have circa 6000 images which were/are catalogued.  Any help appreciated as I don't want to have to tag/collection all of them again.

    Hi,
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    The pictures I have stored independently is the the 4500 number, while the pictures on the external hard drive in the Elements 6 catalog folder amounts to
    about 7300.  Why would that be
    Some of the extra files should most probably be the breeze.xml files. These are created due to preprocessing of face data. I didn't quite get "duplicate pictures with different file numbers in the Elements backup" ?? . Do you mean they have numbers like -1 , -2 etc attached. If yes, then they exist mostly when you had ediited files present in Organizer. Since these are part of version sets in Organizer so theie count is not shown in Organizer but you see it in your backup.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    So does anybody out there have a way I can just restore the incremental catalog backup or use the files created to at least get my tags, categories etc back?
    To restore the catlog, you will need to go to File>Restore catalog from ... , browse for the .tly file and hit restore.
    Incremental backup comes into picture when you had taken the backup of catalog before. So next time, you make changes to catalog and wish to take a backup , you have the option for an incremental backup which backs up only the changes done in Organizer since the original backup was taken. Incremental backup builds on the original backup and hence its not allowed to overwrite the original.
    Hope this helps. Thanks

  • Can't upgrade catalog from Elements 8 -thinks photos are on backup drive...

    I've just bought LR3 (and upgraded to latest 3.2 release), and now I want to import all my photos from my Elements 5 collection (just over 10,000 photos - mostly RAW). All the photos are actually stored on a network share from my Windows Home Server machine, all accessible as \\home-server\photos\. Elements 5 has no problems with accessing them this way, and I can also access them fine from Lightroom, but I obviously want to retain all my keywording.
    As there doesn't appear to be any way to upgrade a PSE5 catalog to LR3, I followed a recommendation I found on this forum (I think), and have downloaded a trial of PSE8. I have successfully upgraded a copy of the PSE5 catalog to PSE8 format, and then view them all in PSE8, so step one is a success. When I launched LR3, it then gave me a new option to upgrade an Elements catalog - this was a step forward. So, I took the option to upgrade the PSE8 catalog to LR, but after attempting it I see a window that says:
    "Lightroom has successfully upgraded one Photoshop Elements catalog photo, but was unable to upgrade 10729 additional photos because the photos were moved to inaccessible Photoshop Elements backup drives. If you wish to manage the Photoshop Elements backup photos in Lightroom, please use Lightroom to import images from the following Photoshop Elements backup discs."
    The photos are most definitely not on "backup drives". I've never backed up photos from Elements (my backups are done separately from my Home Server). Lightroom can see the relevant shares, as I've imported a few photos directly onto that share from a card reader, and have also imported some photos on there in a "leave in place", but (as they are RAWs) I don't get any keywording this way.
    I'd be most grateful for any suggestions, especially as I won't be able to do anything in PSE8 when my trial runs out....

    Thanks for that - that certainly agrees with my findings so far.
    Do I take it you've had this confirmed by someone from Adobe then? Is it an intended limitation, or just an acknowledged bug?
    I really hope it isn't an intended limitation, as it would mean that this high cost professional-targeted app (LR3) is not capable of something that the consumer level one (PSE8) does with ease. Surely it isn't that unusual to store your photos on a network drive.....
    If this isn't likely to be fixed soon I guess I'll have to :
    Backup (network drive based) photos and catalog
    Use PSE8 to move the whole directory tree to internal hard drive
    Upgrade PSE8 catalog in LR3
    Use LR3 to move the whole directory tree back to the network drive
    Not ideal, but it should get the job done...
    Yes, confirmed by Adobe.  It's a design limitation *of the PSE upgrader*.  You can use LR3 to store images on a network drive, you just can't store the catalog there.  I don't expect this to be fixed soon, so I'd go with the workaround if I were you.
    I'm not storing my catalog on the network drive though, just my photos. Even with the catalog on an internal drive, LR3 still fails to upgrade any photos that are on a network drive.
    I have though now spoken to a helpdesk chap at Adobe, and he has confirmed that Lightroom is not able to upgrade photos on a network drive. Seems like a really poor show to me, but I don't suppose I can do much about it...

  • Does Time Machine make Backup obsolete?

    I am a relative novice to the world of Macs, but I have been a big fan of Backup. Now that I have Time Machine, I am wondering whether or not I even need Backup anymore. Any advice/guidance would certainly be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    If you use a .Mac account then Backup is useful for backing up certain elements of your user account to your iDisk. The iDisk is not useful as a backup device for TM. TM also does not eliminate the need for creating bootable clones because TM does not create a bootable clone.
    TM is best seen as an elemental backup solution easy enough for anyone to use in order to encourage more users to create backups in order to avoid data loss.

  • Windows 8 and Elements 7

    Does Elements 7 run on Windows 8?  I have an PC that runs Windows XP on which I have all my photos organised within Photoshop Elements 7.  These are backed up onto an external hard drive using the Elements backup facility.  I have just bought a new PC running Windows 8.  I want to install an Adobe suite of software to handle my photos and I'm thinking of using Lightroom 4 (as I have almost 53,000 photos!).  I understand that Lightroom 4 cannot be loaded onto my old (XP) machine.  It's been suggested that the best way to do this is to load my old Elements 7 on the new machine and then move the photos over.  I can then add Lightroom and import the catalogue to there.  However, I'd understood that Elements 7 wouldn't run on Windows 8.  I don't want to try loading it if it's not compatible.

    All versions of PSE except versions 1, 3, 5 & 6 have been tested and found to be compatible with Windows 8.

  • Photoshop Elements 5, trying to reconnect photos in Catalog, Vista

    I had to install a new fixed disk in my Vista PC and re-install all programme's. In this process it turned out that folder structure is now slightly different from the past. I had copied all photo's to new disk (note I use different folders). Subsequently, I re-installed Photoshop Elements 5 and copied my old catalog. Because of the slight differences in folder names, I need to reconnect all photo's in the catalog. Problem: in this reconnection process my Photoshop Elements program stops after a few reconnections (sometime already after 2 pictures, sometimes after say a bout 5 or 6). Photoshop shuts down and I need to restart. Anybody a suggestion? Thanks in advance Rob Tausk (The Netherlands)

    Having a nearly identical problem here. Just bought a new computer, which upgraded me from XP to Win 7, and at the same time I upgraded to Photoshop Elements 9. I restored my Photoshop Elements backup, but found a majority of my photos had become disconnected due to a change in the folder hierarchy from XP to Win 7. Many of my photos when I was using XP were in C:\documents and settings\..., but in Windows 7 there is no documents and settings folder under C:, and Windows won't even let me create a folder with that name so as to move the photos back into it. So now all my photos are in C:\Users\My Pictures\... and PSE can't seem to find them. I have to browse on each one to manually reconnect it. Very tedious and no way that is going to work for nearly 10,000 photos in my catalog. What's worse, the program freezes after I perform a half-dozen or so reconnects. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, and also the suggestion on the Adobe tech note (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400848.html) and neither seems to abate the freezing issue. I've also tried both restore options (restore to same location and restore to new location/preserve folder layout) and the folder hierarchy is still messed up either way. Any suggestions?

  • If you move files to external disk in PSE 7, are those files backed up when you Backup Catalog

    My catalog is now about 50 GB and I want to decrease its size so that it takes less space on my hard disk and, more importantly, so my backups and restores don't take so long.    These are files that will not be edited in the future so why keep backing them up?  If I move files offline to an external disk using File, Copy/Move Files to Removable Disk will Elements backup those files as well as the files on my C Drive when I backup my catalog?
    Alternatively,can I move files to a new catalog along with the assciated catalog data (such as albums, tags, etc.)?
    Thanks for any help.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    If you use incremental backups, how often should you do a full backup?
    No hard-and-fast rule.  The more incrementals there are, the longer it could take to do a restore.  I suggest starting out doing a full backup every 10 incrementals.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    I also backup my backups to a 2nd external drive.  Can I use PSE to do that 2nd backup (including the incremental backups) or do I need to copy the backup folders created the first time to a 2nd external disk using Win Explorer?
    I think using Windows Explorer to copy them to the 2nd external drive will be easier and faster.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    I assume when moving to the new computer I just plug in the external drive containing the backup from the old computer (including incremental backup folders) and go through a normal restore.
    Right.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    When I do a full backup, does PSE include the picture files stored on an external drive?
    Yes.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    When I restore that backup to a new computer, does PSE restore the files which were on an external drive on the old computer to an external drive on the new computer, or would I have to move them from the new computer to an external drive  again?
    I think that if you select the Original Location restore option, it will restore them to the external drive, but I haven't tried that.  You could make a small test catalog with a few photos and try it.

  • How to back up from Photoshop Elements 8 to Revel

    My photos were backed up from PSE 8 to the Elements backup on photoshop.com.  Now they have been automatically moved to Revel.  How do I back up more photos from PSE 8 to Revel?  When I try to do a backup from PSE 8 it connects to the old photoshop.com backup.

    It sounds like you want to get more of your files onto Revel but are not sure how to since you can not save from Elements to Photoshop.com anymore and since Elements 8 does not communicate with Revel.   What you can do now it upload your photos to Revel directly from your Mac or PC. If you have a Mac, you can download the Revel app and upload from your Mac. If you have a PC, you can upload via a web browser at adoberevel.com. If you upgrade to Elements 11, you will have the ability to upload to Revel from Elements if you choose (it is not quite the same as the sync, but allows upload to or download from Revel) See the link below for more details.  I hope this helps. Let me know if you have further issues.

  • Trouble restoring catalog backup

    Hello
    Last week my hard drive died on me so I had to replace it and reinstall my operating system (Windows 7) and my programs.  I had
    trouble finding my old Elements 6 install files so I decided to upgrade to Elements 9.  Before the HDD died I did do a catalog
    backup of my Elements 6 pictures to an external hard drive.  After upgrading to Elements 9 I went to restore my Elements 6 catalog
    only to find out I apparently had an original and an incremental catalog.  So after restoring the incremental part, Elements 9
    asked for the location of the original .tly file.  Unfortunately I couldn't locate it so the restore operation was aborted.  I have
    approximately 4500 pictures that I backed up on the external hard drive and as I had also stored them separate from the Elements
    catalog backup I can get them back into Elements 9.  However, that means recreating all my tags, categories, subcategories etc all
    over again for about 4500 pictures which is something I'd rather avoid.
    So does anybody out there have a way I can just restore the incremental catalog backup or use the files created to at least get my tags, categories etc back?
    Interestingly enough, there seems to be a lot of duplicate pictures with different file numbers in the Elements backup.  The pictures I have stored
    independently is the the 4500 number, while the pictures on the external hard drive in the Elements 6 catalog folder amounts to
    about 7300.  Why would that be?  In theory shouldn't they be very close to the same number?
    While on the topic of Elements catalog backup, is there really any reason to do an incremental backup?  I tried a couple of
    experimental Elements catalog backups:  the first was an original and the second I added a dozen pictures or so to the catalog and
    tried an incremental backup.  I chose the same folder for the incremental as I used for the original.  I was asked if I would like
    to overwrite and I responded yes.  I then found the .tly file in the next stage of the process and was then informed that I
    couldn't use the same folder for the incremental as the original.  Why on earth not?  Although I initially I thought Elements 6 was
    quite good, I have to admit this whole process has put me off the Elements program quite abit.  So if any of you know of a similar
    product that does essentially the same thing as Elements I would be very interested to hear about it.
    Many thanks in advance

    Ask in the LR/ PSE forums. The catalogs are per se not compatible, but there may be ways. You might even need to consider getting PSE 11 along with LR just for that...

  • Photoshop elements online storage

    I do not want your online storage. I have my own backup solutions, and the last thing i need is another subscription fee to forget about. Every time I load Photoshop Elements, I am first confronted with a window telling me to buy more storage. I will NEVER buy your storage. This sales pitch is highly annoying and unprofessional.
    My question is, how do I disable online storage? Somehow during the install process, Photoshop Elements chose to backup my pictures. It quickly hit the 2gb cap (google offers free 5gb, as does dropbox, and ubuntu ONE, and others I am sure).  Now every time I start, I get a warning that my storage is full, and the only solution offered is for me to buy more storage.
    I cannot for the life of me find out how to disable the online storage. I go into the preferences, and find the "Elements Backup/Synchronization Services", wherein I see a single option.  The box for "Backup/Sync" has been unchecked. I see no other way of adjusting the state of backup.
    What I expected was for Elements to create a folder in My Pictures, which would contain files i want to backup. This is how Google Drive, Dropbox, and others work.  Something tells me that Adobe, in its infinite wisdom, has obfuscated this data.
    One solution I have come up with is to delete Elements, delete my adobe account, and then reinstall without entering my details.

    I figured it out. The answer is to ignore all the links Photoshop Elements offers. None of them lead to the right page. Go to photoshop.com and re-enter your credentials there. Within this page, you can "organize my library". Contrary to what it says, this only affects your online library. In an effort to milk the Instagram trend, photoshop has created a confusing roundabout way of sharing photos. Apparently the miriad ways of sharing photos which have been tried and tested over the past decade are, in Adobes eyes, insufficient. Clearly, the world needs yet another medium by which to share photos. Apparently Adobe realized millions of people were viewing pictures without recieving their sales pitch.
    Anyhow, once I found my online library, I was able to delete it with relative ease. I considered downloading copies of these pictures just in case the originals had been corrupted or lost. Fortunately Adobe made that simple by denying me access. If I want to download the pictures which legally belong to me, I have to pay adobe for some kind of premium account.
    It is no wonder adobe products have been among the top pirated software over the past decade.

  • Backup/Restore with PRE8

    It appears that Elements backup/restore only backs up the produced video files (.avi) from PRE. It does not back up all the other files that are part of a project in process. Is that how it is intended to operate or am I missing something.

  • I currently using Elements 8. How do install my photos into 9?

    I want to know how to get my photos and videos from version 8 to version 9?

    Don't.  Run, not walk to the store where you bought 9 and get your money back.  I
    have used Photoshop Elements beginning with version 2 and buying each upgrade through
    9.  I hate 9.
    I have over 35000 pix on my desktop.  Each picture has been dated and taged with subject matter, and person or persons.  Many pictures have been edited or "fixed."
    By the way,  I LOVE PE until this version.
    I used to scan 1 to 6 old family pictures at a time, crop each, edit many, date and tag the pix.  Then I deleated the scanned sheet with multiple pix.  On the new version, the old sheet with multiple versions comes up and seems to be tagged with whatever tag was on each of the six pix.  I don't know where those sheets were, version 2 to 8.
    NO BACK ARROW.  This is a real nuisance.  I look at one enlarged, and to go back, I have to slide the slider.  UGH.  WHY?   8 has a back arrow.
    The new program tags (don't know what to call them) "sharp" "blurry" "group"  etc, seems like a good idea, but now when I want to find pix I haven't tagged with MY info, none come up because the programs tags have stuck on automatically.
    The program keeps urging me to do a photoshop elements backup, but I have Carbonite backing up everything.  The amount of Backup PE is offering won't begin to hold my 35,000 pix.  That does't include my video.
    So far, I haven't found anything that I want that 9 does that 8 doesn't.  Perhaps a tech person will read this, tell me how to get the back arrow back, how to hid all those multiple scanned sheets, and why 9 is better than 8.
    Also, is there a way to temporarily dismantle the auto quality tags while I put on my personal tags?
    Somehow, as I have moved from computer to computer over the years, PE somehow multiplies some pictures so that I end up with 4 or 5 of the same shot with same tags but different file names.  Big Problem.
    I do love PE, but I hope my problems with 9 are just that I don't know how to use the program.  But I have probably averaged an hour a day on PE for the last versions since 2003.  I can't believe it's just that I don't know how to use the new one.
