Elements 12.1 Organizer slow and locks up.  Slows down my entire iMac.

I have an iMac running OS X 10.9.2 and have downloaded the update of Elements 12.1 and also shut off all of the media analysis functions and organizer runs so slow it is ridiculous.  It takes 10 minutes to move one file from one folder to another.  It also slows down everything on my iMac to a crawl.  Hard drive sounds like it is running continuously and the the spinning rainbow of death when doing very basic functions.  I've had to go back to an old Bridge software until this can be fixed.  I would return the whole thing since 12 doesn't seem to add much to my old version 8 in functionality and there are a lot of poorly place UI issues in expert mode.  I'd like to use the software, but it doesn't seem to work.  Any ideas?
Scott

Hi,
Please try repairing and optimize your catalog.
You can do this by: File > Manage Catalogs. Here you can both the options.

You shouldn't disable Spotlight completely; Apple's App Store relies on it to keep track of updates to software you've downloaded and permit you to update them when they're available. Instead, in Spotlight preferences, uncheck everything in "Search Results." Spotlight will still run for OS and App Store purposes but won't be useful for your search needs any longer. Instead, check out EasyFind in the App Store. It's fast, flexible, and will search external drives Spotlight hasn't indexed.

  • Virus (?) slowing down the entire network ?

    Hi, my problem is following:
about a month ago, I started to have this issue. Whenever i plugged my macpro to the internet, the speed of entire network had rapidly slowed down. Other computers in the house had fallen to an extremely slow download/upload speed, but my mac speed remained quite well working (except the ram memory, which was in pretty low numbers). When I unplugged my mac from the connection, others' speed went immediately up.I called my network manager, and they told me that my network is sending 500mb to the internet, although any of my computers wasn't sending anything (visibly of course).
I identified it as a virus, so I launched my Mackeeper antivirus, but it didn't find anything! I desperately decided to reinstall the software (the mountain lion version). (maybe it's worth mentioning that I didn't reinstall it from the cd, i didnt get one when I was buying it, it has it somehow installed inside). When I reinstalled it, I once more upgraded the system to OS Mavericks. After these two reinstallation, I again ran my Mackeeper antivirus, and it finaly identified some kind of virus. I eliminated it and for about two weeks it went very well. But now its happening again! I dont want to reinstall my mac, and my Mackeeper isn't finding anything again. How to get rid of it? Please help!

I like the Mackeeper abilities, like cleaning the disc or finding your mac when stolen, ect..
That's a bit like saying you like the fact that your doctor can get rid of the bad humours in your blood by leeching you.
Macs do not need cleaning, and in fact, overzealous cleaning can cause performance problems or even damage to the system. See The myth of the dirty Mac.
As for locating your Mac when stolen, you should know that your Mac can do that already. If you have an iCloud account set up, just turn on Find My Mac in System Preferences -> iCloud. It reeks of scam for a program to require you to pay for an ability that your Mac already has.
All the features of MacKeeper can be done just as well or better by other free or cheap software, and the company behind it has a long history of unethical behavior. It's not something you want to be messing with.
Ultimately, it's your choice, of course.

  • Elements 6.0 Organizer slow loading

After opening Elements 6.0 editor, I then open organizer but it loads slowly (5 min) because it loads every photo in catalogue not just those in a selected folder.  Is there any way to speed up opening of the organizer?  Thanks for any help.

    Thanks,

The Nikon software uses the embedded jpeg thumbnail in the raw NEF file. The organizer creates the thumbnail from a converted version of your raw file; that way the thumbnail reflects the ACR default edits instead of that of your camera setting. The thumbnails in the organizer are updated if you do any edit to the raw files.
You can select a few images and run the 'update thumbnail' option to have their thumbnails created in priority.

  • I am finding that a new business is requiring lots of files, photos and video and it seems to be slowing down my older imac. I am wondering if a 1TB mini can be used as a dedicated machine to house these files only and if I can simply keep all biz files

Will a 1TB mac mini be a good solution to separate media rich biz files from personal home type files and will the uSB3 be a problem connecting to an older 1mac?

A USB3 drive can connect to an older iMac by simply substituting a USB2 drive cable. Or enabling File Sharing between machines.
There are organizational and legal reasons why you want personal and business content separate. Since you mention USB3, may I infer you are looking at the late 2012 Mac mini? It has four, USB3 ports.
I would purchase three, identical external USB3 drives and configure two of them in a RAID 1 (mirror) configuration. This means that data that is written to drive 1, is simultaneously duplicated (mirrored) to drive 2. Drive 3 would be an additional fail-safe backup drive. Using Time Machine, back up drive 2 to drive 3. If you turn off the Mac mini at night, put drive 3 in a fireproof safe until morning when you reattach it to the mini. Rotate the USB3 port that you use for drive 3 to reduce wear.

  • Why when I am using the 4Hz filter, on the SCXI1122, it slows down my entire system.

I have a simple VI set up that reads one channel from the SCXI1122. I have AI Sample channel.vi in a 3 second while loop. When I setup the SCXI1122 to use the 4Hz filter and run my VI the used system resources on my computer go to 100% and slows everything down. Can somebody explain to me why this is happening.

My first reaction to your question is that the SCXI-1122 can only sample 1 sample per second when the 4 Hz filter is used. I would assume that it should work in a 1 second or longer loop. When you say 3 second while loop, I'm assuming that you mean you have a wait statement set for 3 seconds within the loop.
I would assume that your computer slowing could be a function of the AI Sample VI making the call to the board to get the sample, and then having to wait 1 second for the sample. If you don't have multithreading enabled, this could definitely make your computer "wait" until the data is available.
This is just my experience. Hope it helps you in some way.

  • Final Cut Pro slowing down the entire computer - Help!

I wonder if anyone can please help me.
I own Final Cut Studio and everything was running perfectly for several months until recently.
My copy of Final Cut Pro 7 started running very very slowly, even the drop down menus (file, edit e.t.c) would take several seconds to open and would be delayed to the point of being unusable. The effect is such that even upon quitting the program the entire Mac runs too slowly to operate and requires a hard restart.
I should clarify that it makes no difference what project is open, in fact after the re-install there wasn't a single project open however the problem persisted.
After restarting the computer returns to it's usual speed until Final Cut is opened again.
I went to the Apple Store and they told me to reinstall the program and free up some space on my computer, both of which I've just done but to no avail.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm desperate for help as I need this software for my degree. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using a Mac Book Pro running Leopard, with 41. 68 GB of free space and my copy of Final Cut is legit.

I can understand people's resistance to this process but it is absolutely the only way to ensure a problem free installation of your professional applications.
Herein are X's rules for a happy erase and reinstallation experience.
    • Make a list of all Applications to install. Which ones do you need? Go through your Applications and Utilities folder and note which ones you'll want to reinstall. Note the version.
(I don't know about you, but I had a shocking number of apps I downloaded, used for a few times and never used again. Forget installing these disused apps.)
    • If you are upgrading from a PPC to an intel machine, you'll want to know if the apps are UB or PPC. Upgrading your PPC software to UB can be a significant cost in a PPC to intel conversion. Know what you are getting into - do a search before installation to see if there is a UB version available. You can find out whether an app is PPC or UB by looking in System Profiler>Software>Applications. This window will also tell you the current installed version number. Generate a .pdf file of it and have everything listed for your records.
    • In the list, note whether is was a download or you have a disk. If it was a download, find the DMG or installer package and copy it to an external firewire drive. Put it in a folder titled - Apps to be installed - or something easily identifiable.
    • If you need to go back to a previous version (e.g. QT 6.5.2) download the dmg file BEFORE you start the installation process.
    • In the list, note if the application is a full install or an UPGRADE. If an upgrade, make sure you have the previous version's disks (as well as the serial numbers - see below).
If the UPGRADE version does not require the previous version to be present - eg when installing the upgrade version of FCP 6, DO NOT install earlier software. All you'll need is the previous serial number. The way to figure this out is to try to install the newest version. If it needs the previous version present before proceeding, the install process will tell you that.
Some upgrades will require that a version of the previous app is on the disk. If this is the case, when you install the first version, simply install the minimum so the app will be on the hard drive. You will need to do this because there will be NOTHING on the disk after you do your clean erase.
    • Referencing your list, find ALL your disks before you start. This includes previous versions if you are unsure whether they will be needed.
    • Spend some time looking through this forum for Professional Application installation issues. The classic example is a conflict between Logic and FCP. Install FCP first and you'll have no issues.
    • Sort your list into an installation sequence. Lay out your disks in that order.
    • Referencing the list, make sure you have ALL your serial numbers including those you've downloaded. I've purchased a number of programs on line and the only documentation of the serial number was an email. All those are kept in a dedicated folder in Mac Mail. For serial numbers that arrived via electronic means, use cut and paste instead of re-typing whenever possible. This will prevent errors in transcription.
In making the list, TEXT EDIT works ok, (I use Excel). Text edit has the benefit of being easily readable on any mac. Print the list out for reference, put a copy on a flash drive or a firewire drive where you can access it to cut and past serial numbers during the installation process.
    • Recognize this is going to take some time. Ranting, drinking too much coffee, swearing, sitting in front of the computer watching the progress bar, etc will not make things go faster. All it will to is put you in a really bad frame of mind. Do it over a weekend when you can be multitasking. While you are cleaning off the mountains of paper on your desk or raking the yard, you can take regular breaks to check on progress.
    Process -
    • Download Carbon Copy Cloner or one of the other backup utilities and do a full backup of your existing system drive to an external firewire drive. Make the drive bootable. *Do not* cheap out on this as this is your insurance policy. If you forget something or can not find a serial number, you often can find it and copy it from the backup system to the newly installed version. Or, if things go horribly wrong, you can simply copy the old system back to your computer and pick up where you left off.
If you have a MacPro or G5 tower, an alternative to cloning your existing system disk is to pick up a new hard drive to use as the clean new system disk. Your existing system disk will be the clone.
    • Once you have gathered and organized all the materials and backed up the drive or installed the new system drive ...
    • Insert your OSX installation disk, reboot the computer from it and erase the hard drive. Use the ZEROs option as this will map out any bad sectors. This will take time. See the note above.
    • Install the OS. If it is an upgrade install, see the note above regarding upgrade installs. Repair Permissions and then run the updates. Repair Permissions.
    • Install your applications following your list. Make sure to Repair Permissions after each install and update..
Have fun, be prepared for a few minor glitches. If you multitask, you can get the garage/ or office cleaned out and your computer rebuilt. In all honesty, this process took all weekend plus time in the next week as I discovered apps that needed additional updates, configuration settings, etc. No doubt it would have been faster if I was sitting at the console the whole time, but I was able to get the office cleaned up and organized (which also makes ME much faster). Overall it was a very slick process.
When you have a fully functioning system again (you have tested all applications and everything works), CLONE the new system and put your info, your notes and the disks in a safe place - once you've done this once, why go through the pain of organizing this stuff again ...
Now, rejoice in a much faster machine with a lot more free disk space.
    Cheers,
    x

  • How can I slow down the playback speed of selected parts of a captivate video?

    Hi everybody,
I'm pretty new to Captivate and although it offers some great tools, there is something that I just can't get to work:
I'm creating a video tutorial about how to use a website i'm working with so I've tried using "Automatic" ("Demo" mode chosen) recording option which is recommended for this type of video. However, the video recorded has a different playback speed than the amount of time I recorded. This means that some of the slides have a quicker playback speed than the way I recorded, thereby not leaving enough time to show the given feature.
The recording mode with the most "true" playback was "Full motion". However, I would still like to be able to slow down selected parts of the video, but can only find guides on how to slow down the entire presentation.
Can you please advise me on how to slow down only selected parts of the project? If this is not possible in Captivate, please advise me on which video editing software (where you can slow down the playback speed on selected parts of the video) is compatible with Captivate 5?
    Thanks!

Thank you. Andrew Kramer's Video Copilot video, which I somehow managed to miss, was very helpful.
I had a 79 second clip which I precomposed and enabled time remapping. But I have 12 places where I need to slow down the layer. After a while, I was runing out of room to add more keyframes using the method promoted in many videos and instruction sites (grab the last two keyframes, including the end frame, and drag).
In reality, you can add keyframes wherever you like and you can adjust them however works best within the existing timeline without messing with the duration, etc.
    Much appreciated.

  • Editing tips for slowing down HD (flash) clips?  Trimming HD clips?

Hello all... I'm new to HD flash content and have a couple of questions about some techniques that could speed up my workflow. I'm used to 'log and capture', but just now beginning my first projects ever using 'log and transfer' of HD content from flash cards. Anyway, here's what I'm hoping I could do:
    1. In the past with DV tape, I would drop an entire captured clip (usually and entire tape worth of video) into my Sequence then change the speed of that entire clip from 100% to 80% for my editing needs before cutting it up for editing. With this new log and transfer, it takes every clip between takes and makes them their own independent clip (IE- each time you stop recording on the shoot it makes what you just recorded a clip, whether it's 10 seconds or one hour long). So instead of having a hour's worth of footage with pink break point markers after doing a 'DV Start/Stop Detect' function, you get a boat load of 10 to 15 second individual clips.
Question: Is it possible to select all the clips or set something in the sequence settings to change all of the clips speed from 100% (real time) to say 80% (bit of slow motion) without having adjust each individual clip one-by-one?
    2. In the past with DV tape, after slowing down my entire clip I would then go through and make cuts a second before and a second after each and every break point (or pink break point marker after doing a DV Start/Stop Detect). Maybe I've always done this the hard way, who know, so I was wondering if there's a way to select all of this HD content in my Sequence (the individual clips as described in my first question) and automatically have FCP trim a second off the start and finish of each clip (whether it's been slowed down or not)? This obviously would accomplish being able to add transitions between clips (unless there's another way to accomplish adding transitions between clips without trimming them?).
Anyway pointers would be great! I love the HD flash content, but now I'm just realizing my old techniques with DV when it comes to the basic editing isn't going to work with this HD content from flash cards, making my job take 2-3 times as long as it would in the past. So I'm hoping FCP has added these kind of 'shortcuts' much like they did with being able to apply a single transition to a selected batch of clips.
I'm up to date on all software and what not... running FCP 7.0.1.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response, but I have access to the FCP user manual and have already read that. I usually only come here as a last resort. I'm hoping somebody can actually answer my two specific questions vs. directing me to a user manual that I already have. Specifically the two questions I asked above with a simple set of instructions on how to accomplish both, it either is at all possible. The user manual did not provide those answers for me and if it did, I'm not understanding it.
And if what you are saying is I can import, or 'log and transfer', all of the footage from one card as one long clip then treating it like it's DV 'log and capture' footage I'd love to know the settings on how to accomplish that as well. I tried that and looked for settings and read the manual and I'm not seeing where that is possible.
I'm not a Hollywood film producer, so spoon feeding might be necessary! I'm hoping to get 'on the fly' help and advice from others that might know what I'm trying to accomplish and do it themselves all the time vs. sitting in front of my editing stations for a week trying to figure it out on my own after reading a vague user manual.

  • Cable provider slowing down my Mac

I use Charter and I notice in the evenings that my mac is dog slow. Even stuff that does not require internet access runs sluggish. Is this just a issue with Cable modem providers? This kind of reminds me of the soft modem days when they would slow down your entire Mac. Hard modems did not have this problem. Perhaps this may be one reason to use DSL over Cable. Am I correct?

Open Activity Monitor and check your CPU and RAM usage, it could be a program taking a lot of your resources. You can test your internet speed for Charter.

  • Why has my Imac recently slowed down

It has gotten very slow lately

How full is your hard drive?
Hhave you emptied OS X Trash icon in the Dock, lately?
Apple Mail and iPhoto have their own separate Trash to empty.
    Have you emptied these?
Iin OS X Disk Utility, run the repair Disk Permissions routine.
If doing these things only marginally helps, next is to upgrade your RAM memory.
Newer Intel versions of OS X use a lot more CPU, GPU, hard drive and RAM resources.
The 4 GBs of RAM in your iMac is really the working minimum of RAM needed just to run OS X, alone, by itself.
Start running additonal applications and your iMac is going to slow down.
Your iMac can take a max. amount of  32 GBs of RAM.
Install, at least, another 4 GBs of RAM. Install more if you can afford it.
Here are the exact specs for the RAM your iMac needs
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Purchase reliable Mac RAM from online Mac RAM vendors Crucial memory or OWC (macsales).

  • IPhoto slows down my computer

Is there an alternate program to iPhoto that I can use to manage my digital image library? I used to use CompuPic Pro, which ran very nicely, but they don't make a Macintosh version anymore. I was really happy with how CompuPic ran on Windows machines as well. But I am super disappointed with iPhoto. It slows down my entire computer, and the program itself runs painfully slow. I have about 9000 images, which I really didn't think was that much. I can barely use my computer when iPhoto is running, it is sooooooo frustrating, I can't even enjoy my collection of images anymore. Please help!
