Elements 12 catalog backup hangs up.

Elements 12 hangs up during catalog backup to internal drive at 83%.  Had already reconnected lost files, did a repair (nothing broken), and optimized.  Program is new.  Catalog converted from Elements 8.  First backup has this problem. Please help.

Also sometimes project files (e.g. slideshows or other creations) can effect the back-up process.
Try excluding them.
Try making a full back-up rather than incremental back-up?

  • Catalog backup hangs at 8% calculating size (Photoshop elements 10)

I am trying to back up my catalog (+30,000 pics and video's ) to an external drive (full back up). The program starts calculating the size and then hangs at 8%.
The catalog was on another computer before and I moved it by making a backup (successfully) and restoring it on the new computer. After adding new files and tags I want to make a back up at the new location (unsuccesfully so far)
I searched the Internet and came across several similar cases, also with earlier versions of elements and this problem still doesn't seem to be solved by Adobe.
Of course I tried all steps mentioned in: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/troubleshoot-catalog-backup-conversion-elemen ts.html without any results. The only step I didn't try was step 4 (Turn off Sync Agent). I could not find it in the menu (Elements 10, Dutch version).
I learned from several posts that the problem might be caused by damaged or not supported files.
But how can I find out which?
It feels a bit scary not to be able to back up and in the future I must be able to move my files to another computer again.
If anybody could help me? Thanks!

MarwanSati your install log appears to be free of errors.  I would recommend you post your inquiry about accessing this feature within the Photoshop Elements forum.

  • Adobe Elements catalog backup fails after 3 discs.  Message says something wrong with dvd writer.  I bought an external dvd burner and changed disc brands, still the same results.

Full backup of catalog stops after three discs.  I have changed disc brand and added a new external dvd burner but still get the same results.  What is wrong?

If you have the hard drive space, see if you can complete a back up to the hard drive instead. If that works successfully, it could be a buffer or caching issue with the burner. It could be running out of space because it is not clearing after each disk burn.

  • Trouble restoring catalog backup

    Hello
Last week my hard drive died on me so I had to replace it and reinstall my operating system (Windows 7) and my programs.  I had
trouble finding my old Elements 6 install files so I decided to upgrade to Elements 9.  Before the HDD died I did do a catalog
backup of my Elements 6 pictures to an external hard drive.  After upgrading to Elements 9 I went to restore my Elements 6 catalog
only to find out I apparently had an original and an incremental catalog.  So after restoring the incremental part, Elements 9
asked for the location of the original .tly file.  Unfortunately I couldn't locate it so the restore operation was aborted.  I have
approximately 4500 pictures that I backed up on the external hard drive and as I had also stored them separate from the Elements
catalog backup I can get them back into Elements 9.  However, that means recreating all my tags, categories, subcategories etc all
over again for about 4500 pictures which is something I'd rather avoid.
So does anybody out there have a way I can just restore the incremental catalog backup or use the files created to at least get my tags, categories etc back?
Interestingly enough, there seems to be a lot of duplicate pictures with different file numbers in the Elements backup.  The pictures I have stored
independently is the the 4500 number, while the pictures on the external hard drive in the Elements 6 catalog folder amounts to
about 7300.  Why would that be?  In theory shouldn't they be very close to the same number?
While on the topic of Elements catalog backup, is there really any reason to do an incremental backup?  I tried a couple of
experimental Elements catalog backups:  the first was an original and the second I added a dozen pictures or so to the catalog and
tried an incremental backup.  I chose the same folder for the incremental as I used for the original.  I was asked if I would like
to overwrite and I responded yes.  I then found the .tly file in the next stage of the process and was then informed that I
couldn't use the same folder for the incremental as the original.  Why on earth not?  Although I initially I thought Elements 6 was
quite good, I have to admit this whole process has put me off the Elements program quite abit.  So if any of you know of a similar
product that does essentially the same thing as Elements I would be very interested to hear about it.
    Many thanks in advance

    Hi,
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The pictures I have stored independently is the the 4500 number, while the pictures on the external hard drive in the Elements 6 catalog folder amounts to
about 7300.  Why would that be
Some of the extra files should most probably be the breeze.xml files. These are created due to preprocessing of face data. I didn't quite get "duplicate pictures with different file numbers in the Elements backup" ?? . Do you mean they have numbers like -1 , -2 etc attached. If yes, then they exist mostly when you had ediited files present in Organizer. Since these are part of version sets in Organizer so theie count is not shown in Organizer but you see it in your backup.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
So does anybody out there have a way I can just restore the incremental catalog backup or use the files created to at least get my tags, categories etc back?
To restore the catlog, you will need to go to File>Restore catalog from ... , browse for the .tly file and hit restore.
Incremental backup comes into picture when you had taken the backup of catalog before. So next time, you make changes to catalog and wish to take a backup , you have the option for an incremental backup which backs up only the changes done in Organizer since the original backup was taken. Incremental backup builds on the original backup and hence its not allowed to overwrite the original.
    Hope this helps. Thanks

Do you really mean MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) ?
Even if its GB, the free space may be enough, depending on your files size, especially with videos or raw files.
When you start the backup process, it first shows you the total size of the catalog.

The process to make a first time complete backup hangs.
It works up the step where i  can choose complete or incremental backup.

But there is no Progress. Started this even over night. No Progress till next morning. IT stops at 2%.
Actually my catlog contains 14505 Pictures. Is this to much ?
If not what can be the reason for this.... ?

I identified the problem as to why PSE 12 Organizer was freezing during backup procedures.  The problem of freezing during backup calculation of the file size is caused by the existence of *.MOV file types.  Both my Nikon camera and my Kodak digital cameras save video recordings in *.MOV file formats.  This is likely a rare case, as only users who have Kodak or Nikon Cameras would be affected.
I had to select, filter, all files with *.MOV formats and delete them from my catalog.  After the catalog was backed up successfully on my hard drive, same drive, different folder, I had to drag and drop the videos to get them back into the catalog.  All tags and locations and people were lost.  I could not search them and import from folder.  So the catalog is backed up successfully.  This is likely a rare case, as only users who have Kodak or Nikon Cameras would be affected.
    Case Solved.

  • How can I access a Photoshop Elements catalog on an external hard disc from both: Mac and Windows PC

How can the directories and path be named, that catalog can access the same picture files.

    TZachmann wrote:

That means you should have both your files and your catalog on the external drive, and you plug in your external drive alternatively to one or the other computer.
Are your picture files already on the external drive ? If they are, you only need to copy the catalog folder to the external drive, as explained later,
otherwise, simply do a backup/restore to the external drive, with the choice to restore on custom location.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
(moving to the external drive is similar to moving to another computer)
    Moving the catalog :
First locate where your catalog folder is situated : menu help / system info.
Copy the whole folder to the external drive.
In the copied catalog, double click the catalog.pse12db file, that will open the organizer and the new catalog. It will appear in the 'custom location' section in the catalog manager.
Backup and restore solution : restore on 'custom location', that is to a new master folder created on the external drive.
The first time you are using the catalog on either computer, you'll have to use the catalog manager (file / catalog...) to browse to the external drive location of the catalog. After that, the location will be remembered in each computer.

  • Can I restore a Windows Elements 10 backup to an iMac running Elements 10 or 11? and how?

I have a 500GB backup of Elements 10 in one library.  I'd like to switch from my Windows 8 PC to one of the new iMacs.  Is there a process to do a restore on the Mac?  Thanks for any guidance or link.

Install PSE on the mac, then restore your windows backup to the mac. (It must be a backup you made to a removable hard drive, incidentally.) Point the restore to the .tly file in the backup folder, not the whole folder.

    John,
I tried running this. Here are the results:
    psedbtool version 1.03
    Opening catalog C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\Main\catalog.psedb
    Photoshop Elements version: 6

    A: removable_drive 0000-0000
    C: builtin_drive 3CFF-D4D2
    D: readonly_drive 0000-0000
Unfortunately, doesn't seem to shed any light. Main issue is that PSE only sees 560 jpg files, but I have many more that it won't import.
BTW, here's the error message that I get (most recently when trying to import a single jpg file that I know is not in the Catalog):
"Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types, or the files are already in this Catalog"

  • Keeping directory structure with Catalog backup.

So I have all my pictures in seperate directories on my computer. When using my catalog backup it just copies every file into a root directory, is there a way to preserve the directory structure that its making the backup from?

Which verson of Photoshop Elementa are you running?
In general, the way that the Photoshop Elements Catalog
    b Backup
command works is that it renames the files during the backup process and it creates a Control File. Then when you use the Elements
    b Restore
command, it can rebuild the folder structure as it was and place the photo (or video, audio) files in the same folder as it was at the time of the backup.

  • Elements 10 backup from XP - restore to W7 - restore does not include any duplicated pics

    Hi,  hope someone can help?
I am a new user to Elements10 and originally installed it onto an XP desktop.    I have since upgraded the desktop to Windows7 and want to transfer my images and elements catalog.  I have performed a full backup of my catalog from the XP os, via the backup process in Elements (which says successful) and performed a restore onto the W7 desktop retaining the original folder structure (also via Elements).
Despite doing this several times, I always get error messages saying the restore cannot restore a selection of .xml files, but if I continue with the backup it finally says "successful".
However when I compare the number of restored images, with the originals, it appears I am over 700 files short!       A bit of investigation indicates that the restore is not restoring any duplicate images (those with identical file names but in different folders), but only restores one copy of the image.    I can't check all 700 files individually, but can someone confirm if this expected behaviour, so that I can stop worrying that I have lost 700+ images?
    Thanks
    Steve

Ah... as per my 1st post, I am a new user to Elements.    Apologies,  I have been approaching this from the wrong direction!   I have checked back on my original XP disk and Elements catalog, and it appears that when I set up the original catalog against my existing pics it did not include any duplicate files, therefore the Backup\Restore is correct, it is the original cataloging of my pictures that did not work as expected.     Do I have to do anything specific to get the catalog to include duplicate file names?
    Sorry for the misdirection
    Steve
    Steve,
The basic rule of database management is to forbid duplicates.
In the case of the Organizer, that would mean changing one of the two above criteria (date daken or file size in kB). That would be possible outside of the Organizer by using external tools, but the problem is that you don't know which files are concerned...
Now that you have restored your catalog in your new catalog, a theoretical solution would be to get back to the old catalog, and use the organizer to delete all the files in the catalog. The remaining ones would be the duplicates. Creating a new empy catalog and importing the remaining files would recover all duplicates. You could then restore on the new PC.
    There are still two problems:
    - You can't delete a big number of files at the same time? You'd have to delete by small batches
    - You'll have all your duplicates in your new PC, but you still won't be able to include them in the main catalog even you have now a special catalog with only the duplicates.
So, the final question may be : why do you want to keep duplicates? You can examine the duplicates catalog and see if they are really necessary. Maybe you can live with two different catalogs.

  • Import multiple Photoshop Elements catalogs

    Hello folks,
I just imported one Photoshop Elements catalog from PSE6.0 into LR4 using "File:Update PSE catalog ...". That worked well.
As I'm using multiple PSE catalogs I then wanted to import the next one into LR4.
So I switched to the 2nd catalog in PSE to make it the current catalog in PSE and tried to follow the same procedure in LR4.
Alas, the menu entry "File:Update PSE catalog ..." in LR4 is now grayed out, so that I can't import the 2nd PSE catalog.
That would make it pointless to move from PSE to LR4.
Can it be that LR4 assumes, having imported one PSE catalog is enough? If yes, is there any way to overcome that?
My platform: W'7 64bit, PSE6.0, LR4.0, installs in German language, PSE catalogs located in a user selected folder
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    OMB
EDIT: I finally found out how to overcome that limitation myself:
    1. Close LR4
    2. Open LR preferences file "C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences\Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs" in a text editor
2.a You'd better make a backup copy of that file before playing with it
    3. Locate the "Adobe_successfulUpgrades******" entry - in my case it started in line 5
    4. Delete that entry; important: make sure to delete all lines of this entry: the ones ending on a backslash and the closing ",
    5. Save and reopen LR4 -> the disabled menu entry is now available again

The CSH file simply stores a Custom Shape for Photoshop to re-use.
By its nature you can only have one active at any one time but you can view them all together in the drop-down from the Options Bar or in the Preset Manager.

  • Catalog backup (only catalog) question

I have been using PSE 9 on Win7 64-bit for more than a year, but just recently I have started using Organizer.  Actually, I haven't started using it, but I have been experimenting with it using a test catalog that only has about 25 photos in it.  Before I start really using Organizer for all my photos and spend lots of time adding keywords and assigning star ratings to my photos going back years I want to make sure that I will be able to keep all of this work in the future when I change computers or buy a newer version of PSE/Organizer.
Organizer has a catalog backup/restore function, but it also backs up all the photos, not just the catalog so I won't use it.  I currently have about 500gb of photos (raw from various cameras, jpegs from various cameras, and film scans).  I have 3 complete copies of the photos on 3 1tb external hard disks.  Of course, when I back up the catalog I do not want to also back up all my photos since I carefully back those up already and have 3 copies so I want to only backup the catalog.  The Organizer catalog is stored here:
    All Users: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\Catalog Name
    Current User: C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\Catalog Name
If I back up the Organizer catalog (the above folder) myself (without using the Organizer backup function) is that all that needs to be done?  For example, I have my photos on an external hard disk and those photos have been imported into Organizer, I add keywords/star ratings, and then I copy the Organizer catalog to a folder on the external hard disk to back it up.  I then replace my computer with a new one.  I install PSE 9/Organizer on the new computer.  I connect the external hard disk and copy the catalog from there to the proper folder on my new conputer.  When I start Organizer on the new computer will it use the catalog and everything will be as it was on the old computer?  I just want to make sure that copying that catalog is all that is required (along with having the photos in the same place on the same external hard disk -- same drive letter as when photos were imported).
By the way, if I had an extra computer I would try this myself, but I only have the one I am using right now.  I hope someone knows the answer.  Thanks!

Yes that should work provided you get the files all back in the same structure. People trying that method have had problems with differing file structures e.g. moving from XP (Documents & Settings/My Picture/Folder) compared with Windows 7 (User/Pictures/Folder) but if you are always using an external hard drive, you simply have to make sure the port on the new computer uses the exact same file path.
If you right click on any thumbnail in organizer and choose show properties you can see the file path for each individual file.
It could be something like F:\Vacation Photos\IMG_1234.jpg
So you need to maintain consistency and always keep the external hard drive connected to the same port that corresponds with the drive letter F. Never swap the USB or connector around.
The file you need to back up is catalog.pse9db
If you buy a new version of PSE at the same time as a new computer you would need to install PSE9 first, then install the new version and upgrade the catalog.
P.S. if you are gradually building your organizer catalog it will help in the future if you embed metadata as you go along. I suggest when you import a batch of photos that you tag them and create your albums etc. Then press Ctrl+A to select all and on the top menu click File à Write Keyword & Photo information to files. If for any reason your backup fails you can still import again with all your tags etc intact. it’s a good housekeeping habit to get into.

    Thanks Michel,
When I made the copy of the catalog there was a file that could not be found and copied across, when I looked for it in the original catalog I found it was called b2eeza-18684.xml . So I thought I would try and convert the copy without removing the breeze data folder because this file (which may be corrupt) does not exist in the copy of the catalog. It worked.
One note, in order for the copy of the catalog to work with Find More Catalogs the original catalog needed to be removed from the default location that I had it in. Elements seemed to detect that it and the copy were the same catalog and would not add the copy to the list of catalogs that could be converted. Once I had moved the original catalog to another folder I was able to add the copy.
