Elements 12 - how to save camera raw edits as .jpeg and not .DNG

Just bought Elements 12, previously used CS5. I only use Camera Raw to edit pics. In CS5, I can save my edited photo as a JPEG. In this new Elements 12, the only option is to save it as a .DNG file. I figured out that if I open the file in Elements, I can save it as a .JPEG. Is there a way to skip this step? FIrst, it takes longer, and second, it creates another 10MB file that I dont need. Thanks for your help!

No, you can't skip this step. It does not take longer, really, and it does not create another file on your drive, only in memory.
For a very efficient workflow, you can open your file (or a series of files) in the ACR dialog, edit them and save the raw edits by clicking 'Done'. You can afterwards batch convert to jpeg in two ways : the 'process multiple files' command in the editor, or the 'export' function in the organizer.

You have to open it into the Elements Editor and save from there. The Adobe Camera Raw plug-in for regular Photoshop, not Elements, will allow saving from within the plug-in but not the Elements version of ACR.

How to Save Camera Raw Changes?

Hi all,
First time poster here so please forgive my likely ignorance of Bridge's brilliant features. I have just started to use Bridge as my primary tool in my post-processing workflow. As I started going through a job I completed recently I started to open some under-exposed JPG in Camera Raw (I find it faster to adjust basic things like exposure than Photoshop). Anyway, once I had made my desired changes I then clicked Done which returned me to Bridge and the thumbnail showed the changes I had just made.
My problem is this. Owing to the fact that Bridge does not contain a Histogram I am using another piece of software to quickly view the histogram. Anyway after making a few changes without switching programs I then switched back to discover that the half a dozen or so Camera Raw adjustments were not visible in the alternative program, owing to the use of sidecar xmp files to store the Camera Raw mods.
So my question is this. Say I have 10 images that have all had modifications made to them in Camera Raw (but I haven't opened the image and saved it), how can I bulk export those changes to new JPG images without having to go into each image one by one? It's gotta be there somewhere, I just can't find it.
Can anyone help, please?

the .xmp files are only generated if the file you are working on doesn't support metadata but JPG files support it so the information is written inside them. If you want to "flatten" the file so that the pixel information gets changed then you will have to resave the files which isn't something that you should do very often with JPG files (preferably only once).
To mass save files you can either select them and go to Tools->Photoshop->Image Processor (but this will launch Photoshop) or open them up in Camera Raw, select all of them in the film strip and select Save Images

Why can't I save camera raw defaults?

I am currently unable to reset my camera raw defaults in CS5 (Camera raw 6.5). When I click on "Save Camera Raw Defaults", the changes do not show up when I open up a new image using Adobe Bridge. I seem to be stuck with the changes I made some time ago. What could be happening?

Camera Raw uses the same settings you used last time to open a file. That's just the way it works. The defaults you set will be used on any image you haven't opened before.
In order to revert an image that's been opened before to the new defaults, you need to do one of the following:
1. Choose Camera Raw Defaults from the menu:
2. Depending on how you have configured Camera Raw to remember your past settings, either delete the sidecar XMP files or go into Edit - Preferences - Camera Raw... and purge your Camera Raw cache if you'd like to throw away all previous settings and have future opens use your new defaults.

Camera Raw editing is not enabled - ACR5.4 Vista 64bit

When I use Bridge, and right click and select to open a raw file in Camera Raw, I get this message:
"Camera Raw editing is not enabled. Camera Raw editing requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature".
There is no problem in Bridge when opening a raw file in Camera Raw when just Open With (PS) or double-clicking
I have seen many have the same problem, and I have tried most of the hints found in forums, but no luck.
I running Windows Vista 64bit. Installed and activated Photoshop CS4 in the standard directories and installed ACR 5.4 manually as described by Adobe by copy the plugin files to folders:
Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats\
Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats\
There are no other files in this 2 directories.
I have tried purging cache, and have closed both Brigde and Photoshop and startet Bridge from Photoshop by using -file, -browse in Bridge. And still the same problem.
There are no errors in the files alm.log and amt.log in %temp% directory.

I have just upgraded to Win 7 64bit and have had a similar problem with getting "Camera Raw editing is not enabled" in Bridge
I had installed CS4 as a trial whilst I tested that my install of Win 7 was OK
When I activated CS4 I was using CS4 64 bit and never got the "I have deactivated the software from another machine" question
I tried lost of things to get Camera Raw editing in Bridge and all failed.
When I tried CS4 32 bit it wanted to activate the software - it asked the "I have deactivated the software from another machine" question and then rejected the activation as two PC were using the key.
I deactivated CS4 from the 64bit side and removed the key
Then I activated using CS4 32bit - all seems OK now

PSE 9 cannot export camera raw edited files to a jpeg format. Only available save as formats are photoshop and tiff.

In PSE 9 I am currently unable to save files that have been edited in camera raw as jpeg files. When I try to export the file using 'save as' the only listed options are versions of photoshop file formats and tiff - jpeg is not listed. I did not have this problem previously when using Nikon D3000 camera. I now use a Nikon D7100. I have installed the 6.5 Camera Raw update but this has not solved the problem. I would appreciate any suggestions for resolving this.

You have a 16-bit image and jpeg is an 8 bit format. You can set the raw converter to export as 8 bit by using the pulldown menu below the preview area, or you can just go to Image>Mode>8 bits/channel in the editor.

Camera Raw edits are permanent in layered file, therefore "destructive"

I use scanned 35mm TIFF files and DNG digital files, converted from Nikon NEF files. I edit in Photoshop CS3. I use adjustment layers in Photoshop to retain the ability to revise as needed (the "nondestructive" route). To date I have used Camera Raw sparingly due to the fact that I cannot effectively change those edits once the file is converted to a layered PSD file. I say "effectively" because I guess it would be possible to reconstruct the file by editing the original DNG file containing the Camera Raw edits and add the layers added in Photoshop (some of the layers would probably not transfer effectively, e.g. spotting layers). However I do not think that that is a viable procedure.
Much is made of the nondestructive nature of Camera Raw edits. However, this appears to me to be illusory since one cannot open the layered file in Camera Raw. Among other books I have read the Fraser/Schewe books on Camera Raw and sharpening. The advice contained in those books are, in part, directly contradictory, i.e. they advise (1) to make all possible edits in Camera Raw since the edits are "nondestructive" and essential to obtaining the best quality file; and (2) always doing sharpening, except for any capture sharpening done in Camera Raw, on a sharpening layer. Well, one cannot accomplish both of these objectives. Once the file is converted to the layered PSD file say goodbye to the opportunity to change the Camera Raw edits.
So my questions are: 1. Have I missed something? Am I wrong about the inability to change the Camera Raw edits after the file is made into a layered PSD? If there is an effective way to do this, how do I do it? 2. What is your workflow for preserving the ability to undo your edits and how do you balance the workflow between Camera Raw and Photoshop? I find it a bit frustrating that the experts write these books, advocating the glory of nondestructive edits but fail to even comment on the fact that that ability disappears the moment a layer is added in Photoshop (an editing step they also insist is absolutely essential).
I will appreciate any assistance you are able to offer.

Please read carefully:
1. NOTHING is "destructive" if you do not save over your original file.
2. Bearing in mind #1 above, there is no evil in developing input data into an image in which pixel values are set per the controls in Camera Raw. That's what Camera Raw does best!
Learning from others is great, but keep in mind sometimes people have an agenda in what they teach and "rules of thumb" like "avoid destructive edits like the plague" are developed to start you off in the right direction. I'm just saying use your common sense as well.

Camera Raw Edits Not used in Batch

Hey Everyone,
I hope that someone can help me. I made alot of edits to about 100 images in Camera Raw ( ie (de)saturation, exposure adjustments, color adjustments,etc).
I wanted to finish up the images ( sharpening, saving) with an action that i created in Photoshop CS6.
However, when i run the action in photoshop, none of the adjustments that I made in camera raw are visible. In other words, the saved images that were output of photoshop batch were essentially the images right out of the camera. What am I doing wrong?

The Action is very simple and does not make much sense to me. The open step is not expanded so I can only guess that its and interactive open step inserted into the action using insert menu item and you selected file>open. Other Since your original question is about RAW files I assume your opening a RAW file that has ACR settings previously set. So ACR should open the RAW file you select with its previously set ACR settings. If this is and interactive ACR step you can use Open as Object or Open Image. Since later on in the action I see select layer "Background" you must be using open image for open object would create a smart object layer not a background layer. You action then dupe the background layer and sharpens the duped layer select the background flattens and save as jpeg. The result would be the same without the dupe and flatten. These are needless steps.
I also don't fully understand your original title "Camera Raw Edits Not used in Batch". Batch actions would normally not have and open step. Photoshop Automate Batch or a Photoshop script like the Image Processor would normally process open document or open files select in the bridge or pointed to in the batch process dialog. If the action has an open step the Batch Dialog has an option that can be used to override open steps. You did not show your bath dialog setting. I have never user that option and don't know exactly that option works. Particularly in this case where you failed to expand the open step. If it is and Open As Camera RAW all image files in the source location will be open through ACR however JPEG and Tiff files may not have ACR settings and other image file formats other the raw may cause errors. I do not know how the open step was recorded or how a open as camera raw steps are overridden. I'm sure Open recent and open file would open raw file through ACR and other image files formats would be open Photoshop where JPEG and Tiff file may be set to open through ACR. Do all image file in you source image location have ACR setting and the file type set to be open via ACR?

Hi folks - My problem is Photoshop's Batch (via Bridge), nor Image Processor nor a Droplet will preserve my Camera Raw edits. It's as if the .XMP files don't exist, though I store them in the same directory as the .CR2 files.
Here's my workflow:
Copy images via Bridge to a new directory on HDD (.cr2 files)
Make selects, label, move / delete rejects
Run Global Camera Raw edits
Run any Local Camera Raw edits
Convert .cr2 to .psd
The easiest way to convert a bunch of files is to run a Batch command (or Image Processor or a Droplet) but every time I've tried all the Camera Raw edits disappear. I've read the other posts about this issue but the most recent was a year ago and there was no solution in the thread. Maybe someone has figured it out and can help me.

I don't understand how both underlined sections can be true. If the first bullet point is correct there'd be no problem, unless I'm misreading it. It says quite clearly the edits will be honored provided you choose "Image Settings" from the (teeny-tiny) drop-down menu. When I do that the resulting action (as seen in the steps) is always recorded as if I chose "Custom Settings." But that should work too; either way, "Image Settings" or "Custom Settings," I'm telling the script to read the .XMP files, which are in the same directory as the raw files.
But then the 3rd bullet point suggests we create different actions for every Camera Raw edit. I can't believe that's the case - a different action for every edit? That would kinda kill the idea of automation wouldn't it? Well hopefully it's my fault - user error - and someone can set me straight.

You have a fair point about the help document, both lines are very contradicting. And indeed, it is kind of ridicule to create an action for each different setting, not helpful for speeding up workflows at all...
Personally I almost never use the Image Processor but it has a setting to 'open first image to apply settings'. When you select this option the first image opens the ACR window and you only have to hit enter or 'open image' this one time to let the processor do its work automatically on the next files to get the results showing the correct settings made in ACR.

No, not for me. The easiest way for converting my DNG with settings to a PSD (but also as Tiff and jpeg) is to use the save image button bottom left in the ACR window ( ACR CC has a lot of extra options and ability to create presets with amount of pixels, color profile and bit depth). You can select multiple files in Bridge to open in ACR filmstrip mode and cycle through them with tab, shift and arrow keys to apply settings very quickly. When satisfied with the result select all files in the ACR filmstrip and use the save image button to have them all saved as PSD in one go
I also have a lot of custom created actions and never have been able to create an action for open Raw files (in my case DNG) bypassing the ACR window and have the settings applied. My solutions for this is to use the save as command in ACR and save them as PSD to a dedicated folder. Then I have no problem to run the action in PS itself. Or a droplet for that matter.

How to access Camera Raw when invoking CS5 from Lightroom 3?

When I invoke CS5 from Lightroom, my NEF files seem to load directly without giving me an opportunity to make adjustments in Camera Raw. If I open the same NEF file from windows Explorer, CS5 presents the Camera Raw adjustment page and I can make adjustments before proceeding.
How can I work around this?
BTW I know I can make camera raw adjustments in Lightroom and then open in CS5, however for an image that I know I will be using CS5 on anyway, I don't want to do anything at all in LR just go direct to CS5 but I can't do this if this bypasses my ability to make adjustments in camera raw!
I must be missing something here, can anyone point me in the right direction?

You need to look at all programs in your uninstall list, and see if you spot any old trials that are no longer active.
Camera Raw in Bridge and PS are the same program, so its not the program but access. Would have been nice it you had stated OS, but here are locatons of camera raw for both OS.

Camera Raw Editing is not enabled strikes again

Hello everyone, I've always open raw files from bridge in ACR, since last evening, suddenly, while I am trying to open an image in camera raw I keep getting an error message that reads " Camera Raw editing is not enabled. Camera Raw editing required that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature." At last I cannot open files in ACR from Bridge at all. After a search in the net I've seen that it seems to be a rather common trouble but none of the solutions I've found (I've read of all in this forum) works for me. Did someone found a final solution to it? Im going crazy traying to understand what is that qualifying product in the message.

FWIW, this has happened to me twice as a result of a nightmare computer upgrade. I had to change my motherboard and CPU several times and twice, these different combinations caused Adobe activation to become confused. I got an error about number of activations exceeded and also this error about Camera Raw editing is not enabled. How I solved it:
a) Called Adobe Support who were able to reset the number of activations, activated Creative Suite.
b) Exit all open Adobe applications and restart them, it worked.
This is a minor varation on the previous user's comment, where deactivation/activation worked. I believe that Adobe Support did the deactivation.
It would be nice if Adobe activation were smarter; I've only ever had one computer, never two and certainly never three.

No, because I know nothing about your setup.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand, such as your platform (Mac or Win), exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop and of Bridge, machine specs, what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far, what error message(s) you receive, if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc., someone may be able to help you.
