Elements 12 - Scene Detect

Maybe a dumb question but, where is the Scene Detect option in the capture panel. Is it supposed to be here in the grey area under the Save To option?

Hello again.
I was able to get the "Split Scenes" options to work- but only once. I tried the suggestions and left the DV camera turned off before launching PrE 12 and "add media". The split scenes options did show up. At this point I turned the DV camera on, and the program hung. I waited a bit then eventually forced Windows to close it. I re-launched PrE and the split scene option was still present so I went forward and began to capture 50 min of tape. Somewhere around 45 min. I received an error message and the capture stopped. I believe the error message was, "interruption in recording..." Strange, since Windows photo gallery was able to capture without issue.
I opened the folder where the capture was recorded and there was only one file so the scene detect did not really work. I don't know if this was a result of the interruption in the capture or not. I decided to try again from the beginning. 1. Closed PrE, 2. turned the camera OFF, 3. Re-launched PrE, 4.Selected New Project. This time the "scene detect" option did not show up. I rebooted the machine, tried again and it appeared. Turned the camera on and the program hung. I repeated my steps above but was not successful getting the options to appear again. At this point I gave up for the night.
I do like to editing capabilities but it seems that PRE does not handle media capture well. In the past I would capture with Windows Photo gallery then import the files into PrE.
I'm evaluating Elements 12 via the 30 day trial at the moment and I'm starting to have reservations about dropping $100 for it. I do wish I could get it to work because I beleieve it does have it's advantages over the simpler Windows Live Movie Maker.

When you open Premiere Elements 4 and the Welcome Screen appears, click on "Capture Video". The Capture Window will appears. Look up to the top right of that Window (those tiny black arrows next to the X/close).
Clicking on those tiny black arrows results in a drop down list which should include the options:
Scene Detect by Timecode
Scene Detect by Content
I suspect that you are clicking on that camcorder icon just below those tiny black arrow.
If I am wrong, please let us know.

Using Auto- Analyzer for Scene detection only (and save time)

As a completely new user of Premier Elements 8 (running on a AMD phenom 3 core, 4g Ram, 500G Sata HD, Win Xp prof) I brought into Organise in the PE8 workspace clips imported in through Windows Movie Maker from my old DV video camera. I wanted to dectect the scene boundaries so I ran Auto-Analyse from the PE8 workspace. This took upto 4 hrs to analyse a 1hr clip which puzzled me as Movie maker only took about 20mins to detect the scenes on a much slower and lower spec laptop.
Tip
If you just want to Scene Detect don'r run Auto-Analyze from Premier workspace instead start with your first clip via the Organiser.   Reason - In the PE8 workspace "Edit" "preferences" Auto-Analyze does not appear so it will run with the defaults which is all tag options selected e.g "focus" "face recognition".
Instead go into Organise from the front page launcher, in "Edit" "preferences" Autoanalyse does appear with all the tag options selected as default   If you deselect all options and then run Autoanalyse on the video clip only scene detection runs on the video (the 1 hour clip was analysed with just the scene boundaries in less than 15mins!) The change from the default seems to apply when you run from the PE8 workspace after this so subsequent scene detection on other clips runs quickly.

Old hands may know this trick but so far I had not picked anything up from the web based docs and information - so this is for novices such as myself. There may be other ways of scene detection but in my limited experience have not come across any yet.

Scene Detection off by two frames

I'm using CS5.5 on a Mac. I'm capturing DV footage from a digital 8 tape. I captured the whole tape and selected scene detection. I noticed that the last two frames of each clip were actually suppose to be the first two frames of the next clip. So in other words what should be the first two frames of clip 2 end up being the last two frames of clip 1 and clip 2 starts on frame 3. Is this normal? Is this just a programing flaw?

Capture with Scene Detect: Clip Name Keeps Changing

I am editing weddings and my raw footage is usually on 3 tapes. I capture with Scene Detect checked and I name the clip "Clip", so Premiere labels each clip as Clip 01, Clip 02, Clip 03, etc. But when I put in my 2nd tape, Premiere starts labelling them Clip 01 1, Clip 02 1, Clip 03 1, etc. How can I get Premiere to continue from the last number of the previous tape, (the same way that Scenalyzer does automatically)?

You can't. Once you stop capture, PP will always restart the numbering, even if it's from the same tape.
What I do is use Bridge to Batch Rename the clips.

SG Scene Detect is a NOP -- how do the sensitivity controls work?

I have a four minute clip that produces a complete flatline in SG Scene Detect.
My guess is that it may have something to do with the content: it is 8mm film partially digitized to HD (i.e. SG/SD is part of the process) so is letterboxed on L/R... I'm thinking maybe all that black is driving the detector crazy.
In any case, NONE of the documentation I can find gives any hint at all as to what the "sensitivity" controls do. Is there a document anywhere on this?
What I see for controls:
- Large arrow (and digits) that can be moved with mouse or shift-mouse (for speed). Default value 2.0
- If the value is changed, a blank box shows up on lower right. It appears to reset the value.
- A small square below the line appears to signify nothing, at least for now
- Tooltip says "Press ctrl to toggle Gang" -- so there's a set of ganged controls somehow
- The normal slider range is 1.25 to 4.0
- If I go beyond those values high or low (even negative), two extra markers show below the line, and approach from both ends simultaneously toward the small box
- Sliding left increases the number without limit (I dragged up to 35 billion). The two lines appear to touch the box at around +130
- Sliding right decreases the number below zero also without limit. The two lines appear to touch the box at around -130
Pressing 'ctrl' may toggle a Gang but I guess I'm not a Gang Member -- I can't see where the Gang is hiding out
In any case. I'd love to know what these controls do. And I'd love to actually detect a scene in my clip!

Yes it is possible to secure the network so that only your family members should access the internet ......
Open router set up page using http://192.168.1.1 ....you will see username & password screen .... leave username blank & in password use admin.....
Click wireless ...change the network name to any non-linksys network name .... click save settings....
Click on wireless security ..... use either WEP or WPA security level...... have a note of the key ..... click save settings ...
On wireless computers once the wireless utilitied are configured to all computer .....only the configured computer will go online

Scene Detection in Final Cut Pro

It would be really awesome if Apple could develop some sort of scene detection software for Final Cut Pro and Color. A lot of color correction work that we do in the DaVinci comes from edited programs off of tape. It would be nice to speed up the notching process to open up Color to people not using Final Cut Pro.

yes that would be lovely, but it would require realtime playback to make it worthwhile. No, COLOR isn't a daVinci in that department. And besides, daVinci never detected dissolves or other subtle scene changes --and could generate spurious event boundaries with fast-moving objects or wildly varying contrast.
I agree that it would be great especially since correcting a "baked" show is really a serious compromise to begin with. In this scenario, you're always going to be faced with keyframing transitions, the colour non-linearities associated with that, and likely a drop/non-drop issue if you use "Import as Cut List". See the release notes. Otherwise, hand-cut french fries-- and ALWAYS a better idea to do that in FCP before sending to COLOR. Trust me.
Nope, bringing in the layered sequence from FCP, even if it has been translated via AutoDuck from some other edit package, is the method of choice.

Scene Detect not functioning in Premiere Pro CS6

Hello all,
Having an issue with Scene Detect not recognizing individual scenes when I Capture HDV footage from my Canon XH series cameras. Tapes just come in as one long file rather than individual scenes. I am using CS6 on my MAC computers (OS 10.7.5 and 10.6.8).
This is baffling as I've captured many tapes from many weddings and have never experienced this problem to this point.
I did reset my cameras to default settings recently but can't seem to find anything that would indicate that causing the issue. However, it is the only change I have made unless a recent Adobe or OS update could have caused the issue?
Your help and knowledge are greatly appreciated!

Problem solved.
For anyone seeking a possible solution to this simple but incredibly aggravating issue: Make sure your camera's date and time fields are set. Premiere Pro's "Scene Detect" function uses your cameras time signature to differentiate scenes in your captured footage. No time code = no individual scene detection.
When I reset my camera to default settings I erased my time and date fields. I wasn't too worried about it as I typically use these cameras for their HD SDI capability with timecode captured via Tricaster, however this became a frustrating problem when I used the cameras for a recent wedding capture and I now have four long files rather than the intended multiple scenes I need for editing...
Hope this simple discovery makes someone's day a little easier...

Use of AUTOMATIC SCENE DETECTION on already existing huge file

Hello to all for the first time,
I have 6 HUGE already imported video files of my videos diary from Himalaya, so they are each 1 hour long files now and to edit the story I need to brake each of those HUGE imported files into individual clips!!!
Of course I can make new smaller clips manualy but my TIME SAVING question here is how can I make iMovieHD AUTOMATIC SCENE DETECTION work on already imported huge file? So that I just play the HUGE file and it automatically brakes the individual clips and makes different files/clips.
Got it?

So I imported all my video (from Hi8 - remember) trough firewire in using iMovieHD ... and that is how I got here where I have those huge documents, each 20 Gigs, on my external drive.
so thats where I am at and I would like to RETROACTIVLY (I quess) use that automatic scene detection and out of one huge file (clip) get say 15 smaller clips.
Is that clearer

Scene Detection Broken in CS6?

I'm having awful difficulty capturing video in CS6. Specifically, every 60 seconds or so CS6 keeps prompting me to save the scene it thinks it's captured, even though scene detection is *not* checked (it is off) and abort on dropped frames is also off.
I'd be happy to just have it capture the tape as a single scene, but it refuses to cooperate.
I am unable to disable scene detect, it seems.
The only other reports I was able to find relate to CS5 and the suggestions there do not seem to make any difference.

I ended up enabling scene detect and babysitting this particular tape. That was extremely painful and not what I expected from a professional product like Premiere.
As a side note, it seems like scene detect works and that this is perhaps a problem with a separate mechanism that tries to detect the end of tape or something.

Premiere Pro CS4: Timecode issues (Scene Detect, Free Run)

Hi folks,
I am most familiar with Premiere Pro CS3. In the past, I have created multi-camera sequences that are synchronised by timecode. I have been shooting using the Free Run timecode feature across all cameras, as to maintain a sync'd timecode.
Now that I am using Premiere Pro CS4 at work, I am running into a few issues in preserving my timecode values during capture. I have recorded HDV footage using two Sony Z7's. I downconvert the HDV footage into DV upon capturing - this is so that I can use the scene-detect feature, and still supposedly preserve the timecode for each media file. I captured all of the tapes using scene-detect, and the timecode values were correct for each media file captured.
Having saved, closed, and reopened my Premiere Project the next day, the timecode values for the majority of the media files have been reset (ie, they all start at "0:00:00:00". This is very odd! Only a few of the media files have retained their correct timecode values.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could they please shed some light on this problem or quirk? Am I taking the wrong approach in capturing/organising media? I am following the same procedure as I had done in PPro CS3.
I have since deleted the Media Cache/Preview Files, requiring Premiere to re-index, and re-conform the media files. The timecode values are still incorrect. When I select all of my media files and tell them to go 'offline', the correct timecode values re-appear.

forum, but basically what I tried to do was filming a multi-camera event in free run timecode, then
captured in HDV split, and assumed I could get Premiere to align the clips accordingly. Anyone have any idea how to do this????

No Scene Detect option in HDV project only SD

When capturing my HD footages, I've noticed that the scene detect option is grayed out but when I downconvert the HD footage and capture into a SD project, the option then becomes avail.
Does this feature only work in SD projects?

If you use HDVSplit, a free program, you will have scene detect.
Personally, I prefer using Cineform Aspect HD for other reasons besides the fact it has scene detect, but it is only fair to mention HDVSplit.

Speedgrade crashes every time I use split into clips function as part of scene detection.

I can use the keyframe function fine, but if i split it into clips it crashes 9 out of 10 times... so to get the job done i simply keep reopening the project, cliping and praying it works, then it crashes.... and i repeat this until it doesnt crash!
File format im using is a 22min long Prores422 HQ 1080 25P file.
Any ideas?.... im guessing im going to get the old "reinstall the software" one first... anything else?
also have issues with Speedgrade just crashing for no good reason at random times while im grading too but ive come to expect that from the buggy software.

I've got several 1080p mov's that have multiple sequences with 20 to 40 minutes a sequence I've regularly run over to Sg from PrPro. Granted, they're pretty straight forward, mostly simple cuts with a few transitions/wipes, no more than 3 video layers a sequence. Only one has any Ae stuff on it, and again, pretty simple.
But as noted, there are those who do programs for broadcast with it ... I'm wishing one would chime in. Maybe shooternz ... I think he does b-cast work. Vastly more experienced than I am, PrPro, Ae, Sg, Audition ... the "suite". There's several others around here, though they tend to 'hang' in the PrPro forum more than here.

My scene detect in Premiere cs3 on WIN 7, 64 bit is ghosted and can't turn on

I have my premiere cs3 on two computers one with xp pro and the other with win 7 64bit and I can't activate my scene detect on either operating system, I read manual and did some on line searches but it assumes in the tutorials it is already active. Am I doing something stupid or is there a way to turn it on

Yeah, sorry I should have been more specific. There is no way in Premiere to split it, which still amazes me. HDV split works great though. I just noticed the name of the OP, you would think that they would know that....

Automatic scene detection: Pros and cons

I am new to Premiere Pro. I have used Pinnacle Studio, where scene detection involves the storing of the scene information in a separate file from the captured video, which is stored in a single AVI file. I run Premiere on Windows, so as I understand it, the options I have are to capture my video to a single file, or to use scene detection, which creates one file per detected scene.
On the one hand, having a single file per DV tape is convenient. On the other hand, such a file is rather large.
On the one hand, using the scene detection feature will result in a large number of files. On the other hand, any files for scenes that will never be used can be deleted, saving disk space.
What I'm looking for is how others prefer to capture video -- either in one file or in multiple scene files -- and why you prefer to do it that way.

Scene detect.
I discovered the hard way long ago that each of my camera ops needs to set date/time on their camcorder or else it doesn't work (why they never set it, who knows...).
Add to that, if the little battery dies in the camcorder, it'll toss out the date and all saved functions - including white balance - each time the camera is turned off. Little things you learn....but anyway....
Yeah, scene detect, for all the previously mentioned reasons. I do multiple attempts at some shots, even in event work. By having individual files, I can toss the unused clips once I'm done selecting my shots (or at least set them as offline).
