Elements 6 - Recovering catalog and tags

I needed to redo my machine so I lost everything locally.  Luckily, I was able to make a ghost image of my machine before wiping it clean.
My question is, since reloading elements 6, I have to tags and no catalog.  I would prefer to somehow recover the data from the backup but I'm not sure what files to bring over.
Any suggestions on the best way to do this?
Thanks

Thanks for the tip!!!
I was able to do it (mostly) but it didn't go as smoothly as possible.  But I figured I would just document what I did.
Prior to me resetting my computer to the factory settings I was able to get a ghost image.
After the 'refresh' I installed elements 6, restored the photo's and imported them into elements only to find that the catalog wasn't the 'old' catalog.
Sooooo,
I deleted ALL of the photos from the catalog.  I was able to find the catalog file you mentioned and restored it from the ghost image.
Now, the catalog had all of my  tags, albums, etc, but it displayed no images.  (Just the blank boxes...over 3,000 of them.)
So, thinking I was being clever I deleted all of these from the catalog.
Now, all I needed to do was find all the pictures again and load them into the catalog.  The pictures had the tags connected to them so everything seemed to import fine.
I guess a round about way to do it (backing up the catalog prior would have been ideal) but finally got this thing back to the way it was prior to me having system problems.
Thanks for all of the help.

  • Save Catalog and Tags etc,as I want to uninstall PSE6, then re-install

I have just used the "Backup and Restore" in Pse 6 and backedup to an external F drive. But I didn;t put it into a special folder. Will I have trouble Restoring it, when I re-install pse6 back on the computer. Will it restore the catalog etc as it was before, tagged and catagorized? I have about 10.000 photos in the catalog..    Or do you suggest I use the "Backup and Restore" function again, only this time creating a folder for it..before sending it to the external F drive.   I have plenty of room on the external drive.   I look forward to a response
                                                                                      Thanks Pattie.
If the 2nd option is the way to go, I will then have to delete the first backup from Ex F drive, how will I know what to delete. How will I recognize it, as the EX F drive is structured to backup  other files outside of PSE6.

    Thanks di,
but do you mean I can uninstall pse than reinstall pse, and all my catagorized and tagged photos will remain the same.
Also the reason I want to uninstall both pse and premier elements, and a few other things is, as recently I tried to delete a few files I thought were not needed, I think I deleted something important, because I could not get just the organizer to open.  I have since been able to open it by renaming it from thumb.5.cache to old.5.cache.  But since then a few more problems have arisen. Like when using Premier el 4 to make a movie, it's very slow. and not recognizing myDVD burner .  It has more in it's name now. Like HL-DT-ST  DVDRAM  GH20NS10  ATA Device.  I'm sure it didn't have the DVDRAM written there before.  When I go to Burn to Disk it won't recognize either the DVD drive or the Inserted DVD.    Everything has changed so I though I would remove both programs completly from computer then re-install them to see if that may help

My catalogues and tags are missing from my Organizer in Elements 10. What is going on?

Thank you for the advice. I have a PC and the catalogs were for the most part where you said they would be, on the C drive under Program Data\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs. The last six months folder as well as a cruise I took in 2012 is missing but the rest seems to be there. Now I seem to have two Organizers-the one I just found and the one I created with my March 2013 trip pictures. How do I put them together and find them when I click on the Photoshop elements Organizer icon? You mentioned “pointing “ PSE to it in the default mode? How do I do that?

  • Have new PC with windows 8. I own photoshop elements 9 and I have lost all my pictures, albums and tagging, how do I retrieve them?

I own elements 9.  All files were backed up to a external hard drive and then downloaded to a new PC, with windows 8.  I have lost all my pictures, albums and tagging.  How do I retrieve all of this back into Elements 9?

It appears that you have made a backup via Windows and not via the integrated backup/restore process in the organizer. Since the albums and tagging are stored in catalogs, they are lost unless you also made a backup of the catalogs themselves.

  • Lost tags, etc. when upgraded from Elements 2 to 6, and XP to Vista on new computer.

I was using Photoshop Album 2 on old XP computer. About a year ago, I got new computer with Vista and I installed Photoshop Elements 6 on it. I had copied files from old computer onto a flash drive, then from the flash drive to the new computer. The pictures came over fine, but I lost all of the tagging. Any way to get that back?

You need to find the PSA2 catalog file, and copy that as well. I believe the default name of the file is My Catalog.psa, but I don't know where it would have been stored. You could search your hard disk for *.psa (turning on the feature to search in hidden fodlers). Then, you will have to convert the catalog to PSE6 (File->Catalog->Convert).
Or, in PSA2, File->Backup Catalog and then in PSE6 File->Restore Catalog

  • PSE user since the old Album `1.  Accumulated a 20K or more photo catalog.  Stopped upgrading at PSE 10.  How do I translate all the categories, sub categories and tags in PSE 10 to the new versions that look alot like the system in Lightroom??

The new organizer looks a lot like Lightroom with the computers filing system, not the organizer I have been using for about 10 years.

  • Import photo and Tags

I Moved my photos from old to new computer using  Elements Export/Import. All photos and respective Tags moved OK. However, only a. Few Tags showed up in the list of Tags. Is there a way to recover.  Thanks

The tags are normally only held in the catalog so may not be written to the images. If the images are then imported into a new catalog then all the tags may not come in. The ones that do come in may end up under Imported tags.
When moving from one computer to another, it is best to use catalog backup/restore so that the catalog gets transferred over.
    See the following
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later
It would be helpful if you told us which operating system you are running on and which version of Photoshop elements you are using.

  • Are captions and tags in backup when reloading after a computer crash?

I have Adobe photoshop 11. I have backed up my photos in an external hard drive and also on carbonite. If my computer crashes and I need to reload my photos back onto my computer will the captions and tags still be there? I was wondering because when I just look at my photos on the hard drive it does not look the captions are there. Is there a special way to save them so they are there?

If you use the backup command in the organizer file menu, all your media files will be saved, as well as the catalog which contains all the information about your media files : their location (path), exif camera data, your tags, captions etc. The restore command in the organizer will let you recover everything where you want to (same computer or not).
If you are using any other external backup solution, only your media files will be saved, not the catalog and its data, unless you also backup the catalog; it's a folder containing the database and associated files. You find its location in the Help, System Info menu.
You could also use the file menu of the organizer to 'save metadata to files', which would write the tags and captions in the header of the files themselves. If you reimport those files in the organizer, tags and captions will be recovered.

  • PC - Moving catalog and directory structure to a new HD

Having filled my internal HD with images, I went out and purchased a new and bigger external hard drive. I want to move my images to the new drive while preserving both my directory structure and catalog information. From what I can see of the "move" command in PS Elements, it moves selected images to a new directory, but that's not what I want to do. I probably have a hundred named folders and I would like to keep the images in folders of the same name on the new drive. I don't want to have to move one directory at a time. Copying through the file manager can obviously do this, but I don't know if it will preserve my tags, etc.
Is there a straightforward way to move files from one drive to another that preserves both directory structure and catalog information?
    Thanks in advance.
    Artie

Humm, this is strange-Version 4 is supposed to move entire folders; Version 3 did not do this.
    Okay, Plan B.
Open Elements and do a Full Backup and point to your external hard drive.
When this has finished running, do a Restore. You should get a pop up asking if you want to use the existing folder structure. Answer Yes and point to your External HardDrive (EHD). This should copy your photos and the Organizer file over to your (EHD).
Now look in Preferences under Files (I think, don't have program open) and you will see one value for where to store photos and one for Organizer location. Change these to your EHD so future photos and tags/collections are written to the EHD.
Verify all your tags and collections came over correctly.
If you are satisfied the transfer went correctly, you can erase your photos from your hard drive to free up space. You can also delete the Organizer file if you want.
Option 2-Use Windows Explorer and move all the files from your hard drive to your EHD. This will keep your folder structure, but will cause havoc with Organizer.
Open Organizer and do File>Reconnect All Missing. It will be all of them. You should have an option to change the drive to your EHD. It may take quite a while to reconnect all of them, but since all the folders/files are the same name it should find them all.
If you wish, you can change the drive location manually. However, I've found many users 1) do not have MS Access on their machine and 2) are not experienced in using the program. If you are comfortable with the program, let me know and we'll get some directions.
Finally, I see a copy of the post in the Technical side. Since most forum users read both sides of this forum, I'm going to reference this thread in that post so anyone can see what we have tried so far.

  • How do you convert a Photoshop Album 2.0 catalog to Photoshop Elements 13.0 catalog?

I have a lot of photographs with metadata and tags in Photoshop Album version 2.0 and I want to pull thee images, metadata, and tags into Photoshop Elements version 13.0 on a Windows 7 computer. Searching the web I found that this has to be done with the convert feature.  I tried File, Manage Catalogs, Convert and point to the folder holding my Photo Project Catalog.psa file, but nothing happens. It does not apparently see the .psa file.  How do I get my .psa catalog migrated into Elements 13?

  • What is the best option to store catalogs and photos not located on the desktop CPU for easy access by PSE?  My 2TB HD is almost full.

I currently use PSE 11 & have purchased PSE 13,  I use a Dell XPS8300 that is was purchased in 2011 and has a 2TB HD, however, it is 75%full.  I have several large catalogs, all located on drive C (My Catalog, Scrapbooking Supplies, Etc), I would like to move these catalogs to another larger  external device, along with the tagged jpgs, pngs, and psd files that go with them, while maintaining the ability to access them quickly from my desktop, using PSE.  I have briefly considered My Cloud or My Book, but an uncertain if either of these are the correct choice, or if another option would better suit my needs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Tyna

In a similar situation you are right in your option to move your image libraries to external drives. Your choice is to move only the picture files tree or to move also the catalogs. Keeping the catalogs on your C: drive does not require much disk space and speeds up the operations a little.
There are mainly two ways to move your pictures to a new drive:
    - Using the 'Folders' panel and dragging the master folder of your pictures tree to the external drives. You keep the catalog in its original default location and the paths of the files in the new drive are automatically updated. Be patient, that may take hours. You can move all your files at once, or choose to move folder by folder (moving a folder also moves its subfolders).
    - Or use the backup/restore procedure.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
You specify a master folder on the new external drive for the custom location. That will also move the catalog folder to the new drive, but you can choose to move it back to the default location on your C: drive.
Even if you choose the 'move' solution, do a full backup before for safety.
Keeping the catalogs on the new external drive may slow down the process a little, but the big advantage is that you can access your catalog and library from another computer with Elements.
