Elements 9 organizer, folder location view & copying images

I am using photoshop elements 9.0.3 under windows 7.
In the "folder location" view, when I click on a folder I see pictures that belong to a completely different folder.
How can I solve this problem?
Also, is it possible to copy an image from one folder to another from within the organizer?

If you always move images within Organizer you will have no problems.
Problems only arise when users move images behind Organizers back e.g. using Explorer or Finder.
Remember to select the Display button and thumbnail view to search the entire catalog otherwise your search will be limited to a single folder which matches the folder on your OS.

  • No files or folders shown in Organizer Folder Location view

    Hi!
I'm using Elements Organizer 8.0. If I select the Folder Location option from the Display menu, then I get a tree pane to left with a few folders in it: "Public", my user name, Computer, Network and Offline Media. The Computer folder in turn contains my drives. However, none of the folders can be expanded (no [+] icon) except for the mentioned Computer folder. So I can't reach any sub-folders. Furthermore, no files are ever displayed in the center pane, regardless of what folder is selected.
I have no filters set, I have tried enabling display of hidden files (not that this should matter) and can see no further options to change.
I did discover a sort-of partial workaround. If i right-click on a folder in the tree pane and select New Folder, then a new folder will be created in the file system, and the parent folder with suddenly be endowed with a [-] icon. If i click this to collapse the parent folder, and then click the [+] icon to expand it again, the I can suddenly see all other sub-folders in this folder. Of course, this is still worthless, since I still can't see any files.
Probably related to this is the fact that the Watch Folders feature is broken for me. I can select any folder (this is done through a standard Windows file selection box, so navigating through the file system to select the desired folder works fine) but it seems that the organizer never finds any files regardless of what folder I choose to watch.
    Any ideas?
    /Björn Stenborg

Display > Folder Location view will only show files (and their containing folders) if you've previously imported them into the Organizer, e.g. with File > Get Photos And Videos > From Files And Folders.  Have you imported any photos yet into your catalog?
Note also that Folder Location view is buggy and often shows the wrong contents of folders, and with large catalogs (tens of thousands of photos), it is intolerably slow.
Regarding File > Watch Folders, it only imports photos that are added, deleted, or modified after you've started watching a folder.

  • PSE 7 Organizer Folder Location View Unacceptably Slow

I see there are a lot of intelligent people posting here, so I thought I'd take a stab at explaining my problem.  I recently upgraded to PSE 7 from PSE 6 because of the well documented PSE 6 bug that causes raw files to appear as broken thumbnails.  Now that I am working on PSE 7 I have run into the problem referenced above: trying to operate in Folder Location View in organizer is painfully slow.  Any attempt to switch to Folder Location View from Thumbnail view or attempting to filter anything (by star rating, for example) triggers a long wait - I would say 5-7 minutes - before the action is completed.  I don't have the problem in Thumbnail View, but the problem is I rely on the folder hierarchy for my workflow and having 20,000 plus thumbnails not organized by folder does not help me at all.  I am extremely frustrated!
I have already repaired and optimized.  From what I've read, rebuilding the thumbnail cache doesn't appear to help either.  Does anyone have any ideas for me?  I really need to be able to use the Folder Location View.  It's bad enough that I may have to go back to PSE 6 and live with the broken raw thumbnails.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

A number of people have reported tha Folder Location view is very slow, in both PSE 6 and PSE 7.  (You're lucky it is fast for you in in PSE6.) In my catalog (13,000 files), PSE 7 takes 30 seconds to switch from Thumbnail view to Folder Location view; but once it's open, it's reasonably zippy.   No one has posted any workarounds here.
Beware that many people have reported problems with Folder Location view in PSE 6 and 7 showing the wrong contents of folders.   This often happens when you try to search by keyword tags, but some have reported it happening even with no searches applied.
In general, Adobe seems to treat Folder Location view as the stupid stepchild of the Organizer -- it's buggy, it's slow, and it isn't documented very well. The Organizer's sweet spot is organizing with keywords, albums, stacks, versions sets, dates, captions and other metadata.

  • Video Scenes cannot be seen in Folder Location View

I recently purchased Adobe Premier Elements 10 and downloaded approximately 80 video clips from my HD camcorder into the Elements Organizer 10.  I wanted to customize the organization of the video files by creating new folders, which I was able to do successfully via the Folder Location view (in the Display options).  Additionally, unknown to me at the time the Auto Analyzer was run and it created "Video Scenes" (i.e., it splits the master file into multiple "scenes" based upon noted shooting information, etc.) from several of my video clips prior to moving the video files to the new file folders that I created.  I have confirmed via the Windows File Manager that all of the video files were moved as I intended.  However, in the Display - Folder Location View, none of the Video Scenes show up, and all of the Video clips (i.e., the ones that the Auto Analyzer didn't split up) are viewable.  (In the Thumbnail view, all files are still viewable.)  Is there a way to correct this?
Also, I've noted in the help manuals, etc. that the Auto Analyzer functions can be customized, but I did not see an option that would turn off the creation of Video Scenes.  Is there a way to do this without disabling the Auto Analyzer all together?
    Thanks for any help offered.

    Steve,
Thanks for your suggestion.  I had checked the Edit/Preferences/Media-Analysis options previously.  As I see them in Elements Organizer 10 they are: (1) analyze photos for people automatically, (2) analyze media for visual search automatically, (3) analyze media for smart tags automatically, (4) all filters, which includes face, audio, blur, brightness and contrast, motion, object motion, and shake, (5) run analyzer on system start up and (6) run analyzer only when system is in idle.  None of these items seem on point in order to stop the creation of Video Scenes.  Am I missing something, or are the options in Elements Organizer 10 different than prior versions.
    Thanks,

  • PSE7 Problem with Organizer - Folder Location Display

I keep encountering a wierd error and don't know why or how it is happening.  I like to use this view I file pictures on my hard this way and this matches those files and then I can tag, make an album, etc.  Sometimes the pictures that are in a file (on my hard drive) will for some reason (or after some event) not show up in the Folder Locations display with the same file name.  Make sense?   They will show in the file name below the folder they should be in and so on.  For example I have 400 pictures from a recent trip to Trinidad in a Trinidad 2009 folder on my hard drive.  When I had put these in to PSE7, they showed up in the catalog view in Trinidad 2009 because I made it a watch folder.  Now they show up in another folder, the one below it.  It is like every folder shifted down.  I understand they are still in the same location on my hard drive.  There seems to be some bug or error in PSE7 organizer.  Can anyone help with this?

Folder Location view is quite buggy; see this FAQ:

  • Elements organizer wont load editor with image...

Hi All, I think this is a common problem from what I have researched. If I am in the organizer mode looking at an image I want to edit in the full editor mode, the editor program will launch but no image will appear in the editor mode. It is like the organizer is not linked to the editor.  I can open the image while in the editor program and save it and it will appear in my organizer. Now I have 2 NIK software plugins. If I open an image in the editor mode and then open a plugin, do my edits with my plugin and then try and save it, the entire editor crashes. It looks like it is saving my edit (plugin) but then the entire editor program disappears.
I tried the preferences and the reset trick as recommended from other posts I found on the internet.  Any ideas?
    thanks

You normally need to install Nik Software from the original disk as it automatically recognizer Photoshop Elements and optimizes the set-up. If you installed manually to the plug-ins folder, try again from the original installation disk or download.

  • HTML Viewer: Copying images+text to another component

    Hi folks,
I'm working on a Java app for a research project where I'd like to be able to view a webpage in one panel (with some HTML viewer) and then be able to select pictures AND text from it (web browser-style), click a button, and have it copy the images and text (even the HTML code behind it would be sufficient) to some JTextArea or whatever.
In other words, I'm trying to find an HTML viewer or browser which will be able to select both text and images and be able to copy the selection (as the real objects or even as HTML code, either way) so that it could be sent to some other component.
I believe that JEditorPane supports viewing HTML, but you can only copy text from it. So, can anyone recommend an API class or even some 3rd party software (no funds since it's academic research, so free is preferable) that can do anything close to this? Alternatively, does anyone know of some other work around -- for example, selecting in IE or another browser, then dragging it onto some component into the Java app?
Thanks a ton for any help!

  • Fix "Folder Location" in Display

I have a 2011 iMac that I transfered all my files to from a PC.  I had to buy Photoshop Elements 8.0 in order to transfer my catalogue of 10,000 images with all the tags and albums etc into the Organizer for the mac.  I understand that once images are imported into Organizer, all file management (moving images or folders that contain images) has to occur through Organizer (unlike Picasa) otherwise the catalogue can't locate the images.
If you move images in the Finder you must then search in Organizer to Relocate the image and Reconnect them with the catalogue.  I found this out the hard way. I think that Photoshop ought to correct this to be able to move and have the catalogue find the images regardless how they are moved as file management should be able to occur either way.  However, I know that you can do file management of images within Organizer and the Catalogue by chosing Folder Location view in the Display pull down on the upper right corner.  However, there is a glitch.  After I move images from one file or Folder Location to another in the Display, the Display does not accurately show where the new images are located.  I find that some images are shown where I moved them and some in the adjacent folder.  Yet, if I check the actual location in Finder they ARE moved to the designated folder.  IE the Folder Location view does not reflect where the images actually are after you move them.  This is a big problem if you have to do file management through Organizer because Folder location doesn't accurately show where images are.
Finally, I've played with Picasa and while I like the option for viewing ALL images chronologically like Photoshop, I also like the idea of being able to view images by the folder location.  Folder Location in Photoshop could do this, but it only displays the lowest folder of image, rather than being able to click on a folder in Folder Location and show all the images in that folder by sub folders.
Any body else have this problem with images not correctly shown where they are in Folder Location under Display or want the option how to view images?

You'll get much faster and better responses in the Photoshop Elements forum.  I had trouble even grasping what you're talking about.

  • Tagging in elements organizer 12

In Elements 8 organizer there were choices of the way to display the tags that were available for use.  One of these methods was the "cloud" view.  It was an alphabetical listing of the tags with multiple tags on a line and  with the font size of the tag name being related to the number of photos tagged with that particular tag.  I found it to be useful, as I use a large number of tags to facilitate locating particular photos.  (cloud does not reference storage on the internet in this question.)
I can not find that view in elements 12 Organizer.  Is there a way to turn that view on?

Yes I used to like the tag cloud in PSE8 but changes started happening in PSE9 including big changes to Folder Location view. I think PSE8 was the last version that I really liked.
In PSE11 & 12 Adobe had to make room for the people and places icons.
Sorry the tag cloud is no longer available.

  • PSE 7 confusion about folder location, help needed

Here's some background: I'm using PhotoShop Elements 7 on Win XP.  I have an external firewire hard drive I use for overflow/backups.  Originally, this showed up as a K: drive on my system.
I added a RAID controller and two more drives to stripe as a single drive for temp space rendering movies.  This ended up as a K: drive and the external moved to L:  However, when I did this there were some pictures from my catalog that I had on the external drive.  I have used File > reconnect missing files to handle the moves, but PSE is still confused (very).
PSE has started to mix up the RAID (K:) and external (L:) content.  If I move a set of pictures (e.g. a folder of them) onto the external drive (L:) via drag and drop in the folder location view, the folder will show up empty on the L: heirarchy, but will show up as a gray folder icon in the K: RAID drive hierarchy.  If I open up windows explorer, the RAID drive will appear empty.  In other cases (I'm not sure when/how yet), pictures physically end up on the RAID drive itself instead of the external.  I have uninstalled both the external drive and the RAID drive and reinstalled them both, but they are still getting confused in the folder view by PSE.  I've also tried moving content outside of PSE and just reconnecting missing files, but it still wants to put things under the K: RAID drive instead of the external L:.
I've searched everywhere I can think of for a description of what gray folder icons in the folder location view means and can find none.  I'm not sure how to convince PSE that there's nothing on the RAID K: drive and it shouldn't try to connect the two.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Thank you!  I ran psedbtool and the output shows the catalog has the wrong drive letter for the L: drive.
Is there a way to make PSE forget about the K: and L: drives that it is so confused about so that it can relearn of their existence?  If I use the drive letter reassignment to fix PSE, it will break other apps that are now dependent on the current drive letter assignments.  I've tried removing all files from the L: drive, but it's still remembered as part of the catalog.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Elements Organizer Q?

In the forlder view, how would I get pictures from two different folders in the Organizer work space.
    Thanks for your help

    SFphotog wrote:
Yes, you are correct they are in the organizer.  What I am trying to do is
view the pictures in two folders at the same time.
I presume that you mean the photos/folders are far enough apart in Folder Location View that you can only see one, and then you need to scroll up or down to see another. If that's what you mean, you could try to reduce the size of the thumbnails. If that won't work, I don't believe that displaying the two photos is a capability of Folder Location View.
I can think of two possible ways aroudn this. 1) Click one photo, scroll and ctrl-click the other photo, and then press F12. 2) Use tags, assign the two photos of interest a specific tag, and then select that tag.

  • Why do files disappear from Display Folder Location?

I have various folders with about 20 to 100 files in each one. I click on one of the pictures then choose Editor, Full Edit. I make a simple edit and save the file back to the same folder and name and close the file in the Editor. I return to the Organizer and display Folder Location. All the files that were in that folder are not displayed, just the one I edited. I tried various combinations of Show All Files, Add Unmanaged Files to Catalog, and Get Photos and Videos and none of them bring back the missing files. This happens repeatedly in any folder. The only thing that worked the first time this happened was to delete the entire catalog and recreate it. This however, is a lot of work. If I look at the folder from the OS point of view (XP Pro SP3) the files are in fact there and all pictures are fine. But they are not visible to the Oraganizer.
Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • FAQ: My files are missing from Elements Organizer, or How to reconnect your images?

    What is Elements Organizer?
The Elements Organizer can be used to arrange, codify, systemize, group, and classify your media. When you import your images and video into the Orgnizer, you are adding information about your files to a catalog. Your files remain on your hard drive where they were, unless you are importing them from a camera, in which case the files are copied to your hard drive to a location of your choosing.
What is an Elements Organizer catalog?
The catalog is a database that stores information about the files you've imported into Elements Organizer. When importing a file, the first thing Organizer does is collect the file's name and location on the hard drive. If the file has any attached compatible metadata, such as keyword tags, these are imported as well. You can use multiple catalogs and yourr catalogs can be carried forward from version to version.
Why does Elements Organizer say my files are missing?
Since the catalog database only stores information about your file, and not the file itself, if any of that information is changed outside of Elements Organizer, the connection to the file is lost. There are three ways this can happen: the file name is changed, the file location is changed, or the file has been deleted. If you need to rename, move, or delete a file, you can do so within the Elements Organizer, and then the connection is not lost.
    What is Reconnecting?
When a file has been renamed, moved, or deleted, the catalog database needs to be updated with that new information. The Reconnection process allows you to point out a file's new name, it's new location, or to delete the database entry on your file if the file no longer exists on your hard drive.

Anything besides reconnecting all the files, such as switching the drive letter  (if that is even possible)?
The easiest way to fix this is to change the drive letter. Here are instructions for Windows 7: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/change-drive-letters-windows-7.htm
To prevent this from happening again, you can change the drive to some very high letter, like X:, and then it should remain constant. In Lightroom, right-click on the top level folder ,and select Find Missing Folder, and then point it to your X: drive.
I know I can "Import---Add to catalog"  all the photos from my external hard drive back into the catalog but I do have a question:
I won't address your question specifically, since re-importing is a very bad idea. A very bad idea. You will lose information that is not in the sidecar files, such as collection members, edit history, flags, virtual copies, stacks and a few other things. Just don't go there. Change the drive letters, as I explained.

  • PSE8 Organize Folder View Missing Files

I have some JPG files in my catalog and hard drive that don't show up in the Organizer when I'm viewing by Folder Location and have the folder where they are located selected in the folder tree. If I change Preferences to view all files grouped by folder then the JPG files show up under the correct folder. If I switch to thumbnail view and then search for the files by their name they are found and the path indicated by their properties is correct. I tried to re-add the JPG files to the catalog but it knows they already are there so they weren't added.
The last thing to try would be to delete them from the catalog and add them in again. I thought I'd raise the question first in case there is some other process to use. I'm not sure how many other JPG files have this same issue since I just stumbled on this in the first place.
    Thanks,  -phil

Folder Location view in PSE 6, 7, and 8 is buggy and often shows the wrong contents of folders:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Folder_Location_view
Deleting and reimporting the "missing" photos won't help.   Adobe doesn't care enough about this bug to fix it.

  • Elements 8 when in file location view the thumbnail is not the right photo

When I click on a file folder location the thumbnail that opens in not the right photos for that file folder.  I have run catalog repair and optomized the catalog.  I don't know much about the database but think it must be messedup.  I need to move my photo's to a external hard drive as my laptop hard drive is full.  This is when I first saw this problem. I have moved only 8 photos.  I have a about 4500 photos and did not want to have to move them one at a time.  Also I store everything by date.  I have elements 8 and primiere 8 with windows 7

If so what does that do to my internal hard drive that has the program files orginal installed on them.  Guess what I need is a step by step instructions as I have not done this before and don't want to loss everything but could reinsall if I have to.  If it come to that would like to have my photos on the EHD and upgrade my program to PSE 10. or maybe move to lightroom if that is a better program.  I am at a stand still as my internal hard drive can't hold any more.
First step is to create a backup on one of your external hard disks. This will be useful anyway, should you upgrade computer or PSE version later.
    - create a new folder in the external disk.
    - start the backup from the organizer file menu, choose a backup name and select the destination drive and the folder you created. Note the size of the backup to be sure you have enough space on the external disk. It's good to have twice the necessary space.
Wait for the message telling the backup is finished ; don't close the organizer too soon, this message does not appear immediately.
You can check if the backup is complete by looking into the destination folder. It should contain a backup.tly file.
This backup can be used to restore your catalog and image files either to the original location or any location on any disk.
Now, you are ready to restore your backup to another external drive.
Same as before, create a new folder with the name you want to give to the new catalog.
Run the menu restore and choose 'custom location'
The restore will create a new catalog of the name of the folder, and put both the files constituting the catalog and the folder structure of your image files in the folder you created.
As a result, you'll have a new catalog to be found in the catalog manager under 'custom location', which means it is situated on your second external hard drive.
If you want to move the catalog to the default location on your old drive, that's possible from the file menu of the organizer. This will move your catalog, not your image files. It's not necessary, but you can do it.
Nothing will be changed to your old computer, so you'll be able to compare the old and new catalogs and the original and the copies of your images.
