Elements 9 saved file "cannot open because it is the wrong type of file"

I have Windows XP. I just purchased Photoshop Elements 9.
I open a raw, tiff or jpg image in Elements 9, make changes to it and then save it as a tiff or jpg.
About a third of the time the icon for the saved image appears as a file and not a thumbnail of the image in my saved folder.
When I try to re-open it in Elements 9 I get the message "Cannot open because it is the wrong type of file"
I never had this problem with Elements 7.

Every camera model has its own raw format, and Adobe can't update the camera raw plug-in until it gets the information from the manufacturer, and the process takes a while. You shouldn't have to wait more than a couple of months for this. In the meantime you can use the manufacturer's software, or try downloading the latest DNG converter to see if it can make DNG files from your camera that will work in ACR.
Incidentally, you're not talking to adobe here, just to other users like yourself.

Just pick the DNG Converter for your platform from the pulldown menu.

I just got the new Panesonic Lumix DMC-G3 and took some pictures with it today and found that Photoshop Elements couldn't open the pictures because they were the "wrong type of file". Now the file format is a Raw .RW2 and I have opened many of them before in the past and they have been just fine! I think it may be that Photoshop isn't updated yet, because I checked and I had no new updates but do any of you have any ideas as to how I could fix this?! (Besides switching to JPEG)

I worked on a Photshop file yesterday, but today, I received a notification that the file cannot open because it is incompatible. Please help!

The notification simply states that the file is incompatible with my current version of Photoshop, which is crazy because it was working fine until now and I need to work on this and multiple other files.

Photoshop 13 wont open. It appears to be installed but I get an error message.

what's your os?
what file (name and extension) did you download?
hint: if win os, download both an exe and 7z. put both in the same directory and double click the exe.

Trying to upload elements 13. getting error message "wrong type of file"

After downloading the new Elements 13, I try to run it and it tries to open in Elements 11. I get an error message that it can't open because it is the wrong type of file. I using window 8.1 (64-bit). Has anyone had a similar problem? How can I resolve the issue?

When I purchased my Dell laptop a year ago it came loaded with Adobe Photoshop Premiere Elements 11 with photo editor and video editor. Since I really have only begun to learn to use the programs, and since I kept getting a message to upgrade now!, I decided to upgrade and learn to use edition 13 from the get-go. What I ordered was Photoshop Elements 13..order nbr AD014688152.
What is happening is that it downloads okay but when it tries to open in Elements 11 I get the error message that it can't load, wrong type of file.
My computer op system is Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit). I know I downloaded the 64-bit and not 32-bit.
Perhaps I ordered the wrong upgrade?
I appreciate your help . Let me know if you need additional info.

Trying to open Camera Raw results in 'wrong type of document' error

I had to do a recovery yesterday, and luckily had everything backed up. So....All seems well now, but when I loaded some photos from my camera and tried to open the CR image, I got that message. Cannot open because it is the wrong type of document. Grrrrrrrr..... I'm running windows xp and cs3.

Open Photoshop/help/about plug-in/camera raw. You should have one and only one copy listed.
It is really not in the plug-in folder for other functions. It should be in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats. It there it should be a plug-in icon that says camera raw.8bi.
What does your system say?

Erro when opening a file wrong type of file.

I cannot open an EPS file in Elements 11 it has an .eps file extension and I get an error that it is the wrong type of file.

I made a dumb mistake when I first started using LR and I thought files once downloaded into the catalogue were saved and accessible. I removed the files from bridge and now I cannot open them in my catalogue. My photos will show up in LR, but the message says "cannot open because cannot locate original file"
I can SEE them, I just can't do anything with them. Is there anyway to recover these files?

What you are seeing in LR is simply a thumbnail of what was in your LR catalogue. I guess though there is no harm in trying to export what you see in LIghtroom, as a jpg but I can't thjink that would work.
So you imported all into Lightroom and then went into Bridge and deleted them from Bridge and therefore off your drive as well. And no backup? Just trying to understand where things went sideways.

I have since uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but get the same error message.

Which version of OS X do you have? It's not clear from your post whether "installed an upgrade" means you just installed PSE 13 as an upgrade or you installed an update to PSE 13, like ACR 9 or 13.1. Please clarify.

With that one, I think we should try getting the malware possibilities off the table first.
Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hour on my Lenovo.)

If anyone is running 10.8. or later, then they might have to right or control click on the installer or app to "Open" to bypass Gatekeeper controls at least once, then it learns it's a ok to be trusted program.

Assuming you registered your older version, you can retrieve the serial number by going to Adobe's site and go into your account. On this page, click the My products link in the right hand column of the first three. You'll be asked to enter your user account name and password. Once in, a list of all software you've purchased will be shown, along with their serial numbers.
That said, it really won't help you much. A PowerPC only version of InDesign means it's no newer than the original CS version, and won't be worth a cent towards an upgrade discount. To get CS6, you'd have to pay full price again.

Scanned picture: "Can not open" "wrong type of file" - elements 6

I have scanned lots of pictures and saved them as jpegs or tiffs, etc in Elements 6 and had no problems, but the last few pictures I've scanned (Epson V500 photo scanner) and have saved in "my pictures" using Elements 6, are not visable. When I try to open the image (that has no picture), it says "can not open - wrong type of file." As far as I know, I haven't changed any buttons and I've been scanning as I usually do. Has anyone encountered this message and if so, what is the answer?

A possibility is that you have used an illegal name. The file name cannot have more than one period in it, and that must precede the letters JPG (or TIF) at the end of the file name. Or, the last three letters after the period are NOT correct ... the last three letters after the period must be JPG (or TIF).
