Elements 9 won't open Nikon D7100 NEF files

I recently upgraded from a Nikon 7000 to a Nikon D7100 DSLR camera.  Historically I was able to open and process NEF files in Photoshop Elements 9 from my D7000.  But now it will not open those files.  I clicked on the Help/Update link and it says my version is fully updated.  What do I have to do to be able to open these NEF files as I did before with those files from my D7000?
Thanks...RDK

Support for the D7100 was added to ACR 7.4 so you'll need PSE11 or later to open them directly. You can either use the Nikon software to convert them or the free Adobe DNG converter to convert them to DNG files that PSE9 can open.

The Nikon Transfer that came with your camera should be ok, but if you’re using an older one, then it can change things in the raw files’ metadata that makes them unrecognizable to Adobe software.
There is a utility for fixing any NEFs corrupted by Nikon Transfer:

  • How do i open nikon D7100 nef files in pse10

I cant open my NEF/RAW files for the Nikon D7100 on Photoshop Elements 10 is there a way to do this

Your version of Photoshop Elements will not open D7100 images directly. Support wasn't added until Photoshop Elements 11 in Camera Raw 7.4.
Adobe stopped updating older versions to be able to read raw files from newer cameras whenever they released a new major version of Photoshop Elements. Thus, the version you have is no longer receiving raw file compatibility updates and will never directly be able to open your raw files.
    You can check this yourself:
First you need to determine when Adobe released support for your new camera in Photoshop Elements.  To do that, look at these two pages. You'll want to find out the earliest version of Camera Raw that can support your camera, then what version of Photoshop Elements can run that version of Camera Raw.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Since your version of Photoshop Elements cannot support your camera directly, you can download and install the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, which can take your raw files as input and put out DNG format files, which your version of Photoshop can open.
Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG)
The DNG converter DOES work, and you will be able to open the converted DNG files with your version of Photoshop Elements, but if you want maximal quality from your raw files (not to mention the convenience and ease of use of directly opening your raw files) you'll want the latest version of Photoshop Elements.  Adobe has made substantial improvements in raw conversion quality in recent years.

  • CS6 - Camera Raw 7.1 won't open Nikon D7100 RAW files anymore

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 installed on it.
I use CS6 and a few days ago, I started having trouble when loading files (JPEG & RAW files via Camera Raw). If I loaded more than two or three files, it would crash Photoshop. I tried loading JPEG directly into Photoshop, and it would still crash after 2 minutes. I tried restarting PS, reset my settings to default, restart my PC, and still the problem persisted. I checked the RAM and scratch disks, etc, there was no change with it. I decided I would reinstalled CS6. I did and now Photoshop works perfectly. I can even load JPEG via Camera Raw and it works without crashing. But then, my RAW files won't load via Camera Raw. I have the latest one from what I saw on Adobe's website  - Version 7.1.0.354. Others listed are DNG converter but I don't need that.
The RAW files I am trying to open are from a Nikon D7100 camera and before, those same files would open with Camera Raw 7.1.
Can someone please help me out on this. I am a bit desesperate cause I urgently need to edit files on Camera Raw because all my settings are saved on this.
When I open a raw file, this is the message I get:

In any event, Kathleen, you should NOT be using that obsolete ACR 7.1 version.  Besides, the Nikon D7100 is not supported by that version, as you have already been correctly told.
Update to ACR 8.6 for CS6 ASAP.
Going through the Help menu in Photoshop CS6 (Help > Updates) will/should update you automatically.  If for some reason, the auto updater fails, here's the link to the ACR 8.6 manual install:
    Windows
    CameraRaw_8_6_Installer.zip
One should never be using anything but the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).
Even if you were using a camera supported by your obsolete version, you are leaving a lot of image quality on the table now.  The rendering of the more recent versions of ACR is demonstrably superior, starting with 7.4.
It is a shame to be using a decent camera—even if it's not a top of the line Nikon—and be in effect trashing some of its image quality.  Really.

  • Raw plugin 8.2 doesn't open nikon d800 nef files in photoshop cc and bridge

raw plugin 8.2 doesn't open nikon d800 nef files in photoshop cc and bridge

How did you install the plugin?  You may want to try reinstalling it or installing the dng converter, as that is what has the camera formats.  ACR 8.2 is just the plugin for the mechanics of Camera raw.  Normally they should both install, but sometime the converter doesn't.

  • Cannot open Nikon D4 NEF files

Cannot open Nikon D4 NEF files in Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw 6.6 … any suggestions?

I am now officially perplexed. Tried all of the following
    a) Cleaned up appdata/Adobe/Camera RAW => tried opening the RAW file, (each time a different one so I don't use the same XMP)
    b) Removed the Photoshop preferences file   =>  ""
    c) Removed Registry entry for Camera RAW =>  ""
    d) Uninstalled CS5.5 and re-installed (as suggested by Adobe Customer service folks) => ""
DIDNT WORK. YES, I USED UPDATE FEATURE IN PHOTOSHOP TO GET LATEST CAMERA RAW, NOT RC
    e) Installed CS6, went straight for updates and it did install Camera RAW 7.1.
Tried to open the file, same old message.
And, I also downloaded Lightroom 4.1. Couldn't import the files. Went straight for the update, nope, it said I don't need any.
It's now been 48 hours into this problem and never been more frustrated.

Cannot open Nikon D4 NEF files in Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw 6.6 … any suggestions?

    Thanks for your reply
.... strange? in the document you mention above the Nikon D4 is not mentioned as being newly supported and yet when I went to get info about this:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.html
It says that the D4 should be OK in Camera Raw 6.6.
I confess to being slightly confused.

  • CS4 will not open Nikon D7000 NEF files; Is there a DNC that will open them?

    I have CS4 and Light Room 2
Apparently there is no Camera Raw update for the new Nikon D7000 NEF files for CS4.
I therefore down loaded the Adobe Digital Negative Converter Verson 6.3.0.79 which is compatible with Camera Raw 5.4 or later.
Using that DNC, when I do step 1, "Select the images to convert" I get the message "No items match your search".  It apparently is not recongnizing the D7000 NEF files.
Is there another DNC that will open and convert the D7000 NEF files?

I just bought the d7000 yesterday and was experiencing the same issue with cs4. I downloaded the DNG converter from adobe and selected the whole folder where the raw files were located (I was unable to select individual images) and it worked fine. It processed the files one by one with new name (without the $500 CS5 pricetag for now). The DNG files open in bridge and psd. Perhaps try selecting the folder?  Good luck.

  • My PS CS6 with camera raw 8.4 will not open Nikon D4s NEF files-

I have just upgraded from CS 5.1 to CS6.  The initial installation went smoothly and everything seems to work as it should.  The CR was version 7.  I then installed all of the updates using the Check Updates option from the menu.  That went fine also and the CR was updated to version 8.4.0.199 as reported under the About Plug ins.  It will still open my old nef files (Nikon D700) but it will not open files from the D4s, suggesting that I upgrade camera raw.  Now I have also downloaded and installed the latest DNG converter version 8.4.  That will show and convert the older D700 files but will not even show the D4s files In the same folder.  I uninstalled CS6 according to the uninstall instructions and then deleted the folder (Plug ins?) from the Common/Adobe location as instructed, and then reinstalled.  No improvement resulted. This is on windows 7 64 bit system with all updates.

Glad to be of help. But I'm curious (not critical of what you are doing) to know why so many people like to use Nikon Transfer to transfer their files to the computer. It is still necessary to import them into Lightroom. And, from my perspective, it seems simpler and maybe even a little quicker to use the Lightroom import dialog. I have Nikon cameras, and have never even installed the Nikon Transfer utility. What is so unique about it?

  • Opening Nikon D600 NEF files using PhotoShop CS4 11.0.2 and ACR 5.7.0.213

    Hello,
    I've just bought a Nikon D600.
    I have Photoshop CS4 11.0.2 and ACR 5.7.0.213.
With these versions, I'm unable to open the D600 NEF files.  I get the following message:
"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"
Yet I can view the NEFs in other software that pre-dates the D600, e.g. FastStone Image Viewer 4.6.
Does anybody know if I can get a plug-in from Adobe for PS CS4 that allows me to edit D600 NEFs?
    Many thanks for any help.
    Regards,
    Aisling

Either upgrade to Photoshop CS6 or download the free DNG Converter and covert your NEFs to DNG.

  • Unable to open Nikon 750 NEF files in Photoshop Elements 13

I just got a Nikon D750 and I cannot open NEF files in Photoshop Elements 13 even when I download Camera Raw 9.0 and DNG Converter 9.0.  What can I do?

  • Opening Nikon D80 NEF files in Elements 5

I cannot open NEF files from my Nikon D80 camera. Also, Nikon D80 camera isn't listed in the RAW files section for 4.1 new download. How will I be able to open files from the Nikon D80, if the 4.1 new download doesn't support this?

Camera Raw is updated about four times each year. In most cases, the update is primarily to add compatibility for new cameras. Each new camera that takes raw images must have support added for it, not just the brand but the specific model. Support for your camera was added after the release of Photoshop Elements 5. Adobe does not create new installation disks every time Camera Raw is updated. It is your responsibility to download the updated Camera Raw when it becomes available and install it correctly on your computer.
The message you are receiving is the message that is displayed when there isn't support for a specific camera. So you need to go to the download section and download ACR 4.1 and replace the version that you have installed right now. There is a link to the download at the very top of this forum. Be sure to follow the installation instructions precisely.

  • Can not get Elements to open Nikon D3s nef files.

I have Elements 8 running on a Imac and a MacBook Pro. All updates have been installed. Neither will open D3s 'nef' files. What am I doing wrong? These files will open on a Mac Pro using CS4.
    Thanks

You need to make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw as the D3s is a recent model supported by ACR 5.6.
To check for the plug-in open Full Edit and go to Help > About Plug-in > Camera Raw and you should see the version installed.
If you don’t see it, or you have an earlier version than 5.6.0.148 use one of the following links to download the update.

Free option: Download the free Adobe DNG Converter, convert all D7100 Raw files to DNGs then open the DNGs in CS5
