Elements and .psd files
Hi all....I recently paid a graphic design firm to create a product brochure for me. It was supplied to me in .psd format.
I would like to add some text, and a small logo to the file, then save the file as a .pdf type file.
Will photoshop Elements give me this ability? or do I need to purchase the full Photoshop program.
This brochure will be customized and edited over and over again by me, so I need the ability to edit it in house rather than just paying him to miodify it for me every time.
thanx in advance
shane
Great - i will confirm with the deiginer whether or not the file contains CMYK / composite laters.
Also....I can't seem to download the trial version....in the past, I had downloaded a trial version of Photoshop....now when I try to download the Element trial, it doesn't work...it keeps sending me to a "Purchase now" page for the full Photoshop program...frustrating actually. That's why I resorted to posting the question here.
Thanx for your help by the way,
shane

Problem with Preview and PSD files - random gray square
Hi guys, hope you can help...
I've got a problem with Preview and PSD files.
If I open in Preview both an original jpg straight from my reflex and the photoshop version of the same picture, the psd file presents a gray square (of what it seems unrendered image) in a random area of the photo (sometimes in the center.). The square is quite big...
If I zoom in or zoom out it disappears...if I scroll to another photo and then back to the psd, the square it's there again...sometimes in a different position.
I've tried the same psd on my older iMac with leopard...and got no problem at all.
I suspect it got something to do with my Ati...
(this is the second iMac 27...the first went back for gray banding on the lcd screen and flickering and yellow tinge........)
Thanks for your help.
DAve.maybe I'm onto something...
I've just found out that opening Preview in 32bit mode (instead of default 64bit) works flawlessly with any psd files. If I switch back to 64bit mode, Preview is much faster but the gray square comes back...
It seems like the i7 is much faster than the Ati....
Any more realistic ideas? -
In the Catalog Settings under the Metadata tab, I have unchecked the option 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files'.
I then selected a JPEG photograph in the Library module and chose Metadata/Save Metatdata to File. I wanted to save the metadata that I had added (keywords, IPTC, rating, etc), but not the develop settings.
I then imported the jpeg back into another catalog. The metadata I had added was there as expected, but so are the develop settings. This I did not expect or want.
Have I got something wrong here? My understanding is that turning off the 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files' option means that develop settings are not written to the xmp area in non raw files such as jpegs.
Looks like a bug to me.
TonyHello all,
I have investigated this problem further and now have the answer. It is not that the option "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files" is ignored, but it appears that the LR catalog is not properly updated when this option is turned off.
Here are steps to test and illustrate the problem:
1. Create a new folder and place a copy of an original jpeg image (original from camera) in the new folder. Make sure you keep the original safe and only work on copies.
2. Create a new catalog in Lightroom 2.3.
3. Import the jpeg image from the new folder.
4. Add some metadata (keywords, ratings, title, caption, IPTC data, etc).
5. Make some Develop adjustments to the image.
6. Open "Catalogue Settings" from the Edit menu and check (enable) the option "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files". Uncheck (disable) the "Automatically write changes into XMP" option.
7. Select "Save Metadata to File".
8. Delete the jpeg image from the Library module, then re-import it.
9. Copy the original image back to the new folder, replacing the updated jpeg (once again, the jpeg image now contains no metadata from Lightroom). At this stage, Lightroom fails to recognize that the metadata in the LR catalog doesn’t match the metadata content in the jpeg file. I would have though that it should.
10. Open "Catalogue Settings" from the Edit menu and uncheck (turn off) the option "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files".
11. Reset the Develop settings.
12. You now need to make a change to the metadata like increase or decrease the rating (otherwise LR won’t save any metadata to the jpeg file - LR is being too smart and thinks it’s already up to date, so does nothing when you do the next step).
12. Select "Save Metadata to File".
13. Delete the jpeg image from the Library module again, then re-import it again.
14. Look at the develop settings (that you specifically did not want saved within the jpeg file in step 10).
Although the Develop settings were Reset in step 11, you have ended up with the original Develop settings from step 5. It is true that LR has not saved the reset develop settings, but it also hasn’t removed the old develop settings that are still stored in the catalog. This must be considered a bug (oversight). Note that it has also saved an Import snapshot as well.
For the more technically minded (and the LR developers if you are listening), the field "xmp" in the table "Adobe_AdditionalMetadata" is not updated (old camera raw settings and snapshot settings are left behind) when the "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files" option is unchecked (disabled) and it seems that this is the data that is written to the jpeg file when you select "Save Metadata to File". Note that the state of "Automatically write changes into XMP" has not effect on this process - I tried it on and off.
Hope that this might be of some help to others one day.

What does "Include develop settings metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files" do?
I am wondering what the option "Include develop settings metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files" found in catalog settings/metadata does? what happens if you uncheck it?
Bob12312321 wrote:
also when this is unchecked will lightroom still save keyword changes to raw(nef) files? thank you!
Metadata ("real" metadata like keyowords nor develop adjustments) are never saved into non-DNG Raw files (like .nef, .cr2) directly. With these files, there is always a so called sidecar file (with the extension .xmp) created to hold the XMP information.
And yes, if the option is unchecked, LR will save the keywords to the XMP sidecars, when you perform "Write Metadata to File" or have the autowrite option active.

PSE 7: Texture folder has JPG and PSD files?
I noticed there are both file types in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7\Presets\Textures\
Blue Pastels.jpg
Burnt Red Pastel Paper.jpg
Charcoal on Paper.jpg
Dirt.jpg
Feathers.psd
Footprints.psd
Frosted Glass.psd
Granite.jpg
Grass.jpg
Lambswool.jpg
Leafy Bush.jpg
Linen.jpg
Lines.psd
Mountains 1.psd
Purple Daisies.jpg
Purple Pastels.jpg
Puzzle.psd
Rust Flakes.psd
Sepia Marble Paper.jpg
Snake Skin.psd
Spiky Bush.jpg
Strands 1.psd
Stucco 2.psd
Stucco Color.jpg
v4 Old Paper.psd
v4 Parchment.psd
v4 PLASTERG.psd
Wild Red Flowers.jpg
Wrinkle Wood Paper.jpg
Yellow Green Chalk.jpg
Yellow Tan Dry Brush.jpg
When I go to texture > texturizer and choose load, only PSD files are setup to load. Why are some of these in jpg format and PSD? Is there a feature that uses these jpgs, if so, where is it? For example, what feature uses the textures Blue Pastels.jpg and Burnt Red Pastel Paper.jpg?
Thanks, TonyNo, filter uses the jpgs AFAIK. They are in Photoshop too. They are seamless so you could use them as is and define them as patterns; then again you can also use the PSD files to make patterns. The grass jpg is a good one to turn into a pattern.
If you want to use them with the filters that require PSD files just save a copy of each in PSD file format. You might also think about making them black and white so you can tinker with how they will apply the texture. (White is high; black is low; 50% gray is neutral. Colors act as shades of gray so black and white might help you better predict what the result will be.) -
Can't import RAW and psd file with same name different extension
Trying to import a folder of images from desktop that I have been working with in Bridge CS3.
LR won't import a RAW file that has a PSD file by the same name. Tried renaming the PSD and deleting the one with the same name, but says it is still there and won't import the RAW file - What is the correct workaround on this? Why can't it import same name files with different extensions?A forum search for 'RAW + JPEG' will give you more posts on this than you care to read. This will change. For now, import the RAW and PSD's from separate folders and then move them together for within LR.
LR is seeing the RAW as a sidecar to the PSD. It is an unforseen effect of the RAW + JPEG thing where they decided to not import the JPEG, seeing it as basically a preview image for the RAW.

Metadata and .psd files
Im having problems with psd files that appear to 1. Lose visibility of metadata inside bridge, 2 are unable to have metadata updated and or added.
These are psd files that were originated as .NEF files (Nikon Raw) - only touched by Adobe applications ( I dont use Capture) - opened in ACR, saved in a different folder as .psd and subsequently edited.
The metadata is visible in photoshop when I go to files info, but it is not visible in bridge. I am trying to sort through images to tag them for a deadline, and I want to use images that I have already done the post production on, but I cannot either see or update the metadata in bridge!
I tried appending a metadata template - but that doesnt work either, the option is greyed out
any suggestions????
I am using CS3 and just updated to Bridge 2.1.0.100Chris,
How large are the PSD files? If they are over 400MB, I think I know what's wrong.
Bridge has a file-size preference, and won't process files that are larger than your setting. You'll find this preference on the Thumbnails panel in the Bridge Preferences dialog. The default is 400MB--try bumping it up to a size larger than your largest PSD and then purge the cache for the folder containing those PSDs.
If that does not work, I'd like to have a copy of one of the PSDs that is not working for you.

I have PS Elements 7. I cant open raw files from a memory card shot in a Canon 6D. I went to help in Elements, and under camera raw plug-in, it says my version is 4.5.0.175. Do I upgrade this, and how? Am I also going to need a DNG converter?
You need ACR 7.3 according to this list
http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
So I don't think you are going to be able access the CR2 files directly from Elements. (This is actually the Photoshop forum, and we don't know much at all about Elements. You can find the right forum at Photoshop Elements)
So you are going to need to install the free DNG converter, but it is no real hassle. -

hello
I wanted to change the psd file wich is connected with encore
in my project there is a file called "first.psd"
now - it is an old file so I want to substitute this file with "second.psd"
so if I open my encore-project there is a new connection to "second.psd" and not to "first.psd"

I in stalled PS Elementsd 2.0 on Windows 7 2013 and gif. files stopped working. What can be done?
As far as i know, windows 7 won't play animated gifs in the stock windows photo viewer like windows xp would.
Did you install some kind of add on to make windows photo viewer play animated gifs?
Are you sure windows photo viewer was the program opening and playing the animated gifs?
XnView is a nice program that will play animated gifs and do a whole lot more.

Adobe Premiere Elements and .MOD files - can I make them compatible?
Any advice gratefully received!.. I have a laptop running on Windows 7, I've just installed PE10 and although I can import the footage from the hard drive into the time line, it's looking de-interlaced. There is audio and picture, just not a decent picture! Does anyone know how I can work around this?? any tips would be a help. (The footage is from a Canon Legria FS200)
Thank you both - I found it, and changed the file extension to .mpg
Unfortunately the footage looks awful in the timeline. I'm trying to get Adobe to help me and they keep promising me a call back 'within an hour and half!' It's now been a week of these false promises and no-one will get back to me. I've had 2 online chats where they say they can't help with any technical issue and that I need to call the helpline, which is what I'm doing anyway!...
Might have to just send it back soon and start with some other editing software! -
Photoshop Elements and RW2 Files
I have a panasonic FZ28 that shoots RW2 RAW files. I see PE7 has Camera Raw but when I try and open the file it says it can't be parsed?
Thanks
BrianBrian, I searched for the same... had the same issue... and was tickled to find your post that said you have the same camera as me. I'm just curious, are you as happy with the camera as I am? I bought one for me and one for my husband, and it's so good that i'm tempted to buy one more & just put it in the closet for the day this one dies. OMG... how did I ever find a camera with every feature I ever wanted... easy to use interface and the lightest weight I could have ever imagined. I'm just thinking it's the best kept secret out there. Or is it?
Thanks for the post here. I am off to get the download.
