Elements catalogue restoration

A Happy New Year to all.  I think I've made a fundamental mistake and would appreciate any help in resolving it.
On old PC, ran Elements 6 - had a number of albums set up to organise my photos.  Upgraded my PC.  Foolishly did not run Elements catalogue back-up procedure, as I should have done, but simply copied all the files in the catalogue location on my PC - which I found in the "system info" option under the "Help" menu.  Set up new PC and loaded Lightroom 3.  It found, and imported all the photos in my "Pictures" folder OK.  However, none of the previous Elements album information was captured so that level of organisation disappeared.
To try and fix this, I reloaded Elements 6 on my new PC, but am not able to "restore" the catalogue as I did not back it up.  Tried pointing it to the files I copied from the catalogue location above, but it's searching for a file with an extension which is not there (obviously the back-up file).
Any ideas on how I can resolve the problem and recover my "lost" albums?
Thanks in anticipation,
Harry

Thanks for your reply.  The old PC is now unavailable.  I've now decided that it's a lost cause and have resorted to setting all my old Elements albums up as "collections" on Lightroom.  With 22,000 images, that'll be a good day's work.
Not a mistake I'll be making again.
Thanks,
Harry

  • Structure recognised, element catalogue not populated

Must be doing something wrong, but can't work out what!
    b what I've got:
    * FM 8.0
    * a well-structured, valid xml file with a doctype
    * dtd for the same (obviously)
    * structure-only (no formatting yet) edd generated from the dtd
    * udpated structapps file with an entry identifying the doctype and the dtd
    b what happens
I open FrameMaker and then file > open the xml; no errors, and the structure window is populated ... but everything is red, and there are no entries in the element catalogue
I'll see if I find any tips in the Structure Development guide, but any hints and tips in the meantime would be appreciated and welcome.
    [ps] Ain't those out-of-frame bullets something =8-}

    Hi,
Looks like you haven't import the edd to the template file. Frame does not use the edd directly, in structapps.fm, the application defines the rw-rules, template to be used etc, but the edd must separately be imported to template.
Open the edd, then template and use "Import Element Definitions" to populate the template (don't remember by heart where the command is in fm8, prob. under "Structure Tools")

  • Moving Elements Catalogue

Can anybody advise how I can move
my entire Elements 6.0 catalogue to a different HDD on my PC? I've tried backing up and then restoring
to the new location. everything appears on the new drive but none of it seems to
be linked into the software. I've tried searching the forums but haven't found anything helpful
    so far.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 restore has duplicated all my pictures

I recently upgraded my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7 installing a new hard disk in the process.
Before starting I used PSE 6 to backup the catalogue.
I installed Windows 7 on the new disk and copied all my data files (including pictures) from the old HDD.
I then restored the catalog on the new drive after installing PSE 11.
All seemed fine, so I carried on working on my pictures.
Now some weeks later I notices that the restore created duplicates of ALL my pictures, so for example, as well as _MG_0876.CR2, there is also a copy of it called _MG_0876-1.CR2 which is the one that is actually in the catalogue.
This seems really silly at best.  If I restore the catalog, the restore should ASK what to do about duplicates, not just create thousands of duplicate files willy-nilly.
The ONLY easy solution to this mess I could find was to delete the entire fiolder structure and restore the backup again, which has resulted in my loosing at least two weeks worth of work in the form of image editing.  Going through and manually deleting files in Windows Explorer just wasn't an option.
I am REALLY, REALLY annoyed.  The manual doesn't mention that this will happen at all.
    1. What is the recommended procedure?
    2. Why isn't this described in the manual?
    3. Why doesn't the restore ASK what to do with duplicates?
    Dave P.

The point of the backup feature in PSE is to back up both your catalog and your photos, so that you can restore them all at once without having to manually reconnect all your files. The best way would have been to not restore your photos before restoring PSE. PSE never asks about duplicates.
Alternatively if the entire contents of your hard drive were already copied, you could just use organizer>file>manage catalogs to find your copied catalog and then reconnect all the photos, if necessary.
But restore was just doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

  • Moving Photoshop Elements catalogues from a PC to a Mac

I have created several photo catalogues on my PC using Photoshop Elements 7. I have now moved to a Mac computer. I have imported my photos tom my new computer, and into iPhoto. However I would like to continue organising and editing them with Photoshop Elements. To this end I intend to purchase the Photoshop Elements for Mac software. However if I do this how to I move the catalogue (and stack details) for my photo collection to the Mac? Grateful for some advice.

And presumably once i have checked everything has imported correctly, i can then delete those photos in iPhoto that I now have duplicates of in my new Mac PSE folder? This would then provide a sort of safeguard on the transfer process. Will all the stacks, catalogues etc. in the new Mac PSE file be the same as on my old PC PSE file? As I have a lot of very old family photos from the early part of the last century i have numerous edits of each photo. These all appear separately in iPhoto. Presumably they will appear stacked as one photo in my new Mac PSE file? Apologies for these aggravating little questions but I want to make sure everything will be OK before starting the process.

  • Photoshop Elements catalogues synced with Photoshop express

Help.  I am using Photoshop Elements 10.  We have two catalogues that became combined when we syned with Photoshop express.

    Tom:
Thank you for your response. Couple of questions: When I go to file/new blank file what is the height and width to fit into tv safe mode for fce? I am changing the background color and adding different frames, etc. to the pics & I don't think I'll be doing alot of scanning. Also, I have scanned my photos at 72 dpi and will that not be sufficient if I do any type of pan and scan? I found out how to add the borders, etc. in photoshop - just want to make sure that when I import into fce everything will be smooth. Any "must do's" would be appreciated.

  • Photoshop Elements 13 Restoring Catalog / Files Not Able To Be Restored

I backed up my catalog from an older Photoshop version using the backup to hard drive option.  Then I restored my catalog to Photoshop Elements 13 on a new computer, but had files not able to be restored.  Does this means they are in my catalog but missing links to the actual files or not in the catalog at all? & is there something I can do differently to try the restore again without this happening?  Thanks!

    Hi,
    See if this helps.
Convert Organizer catalogs for 64-bit versions | Photoshop Elements 13 or later

  • Elements 10 restore to iMac from xp backup

I am trying to restore my catalog into a brand new iMac with Mountain Lion  and max memory.
I have created the backup several times, reconnecting all pictures and writing the tag info to the pictures.
After the restore. All the pictures are present and the category info on them seems correct ( properties and icons on the thumbnails ).
The catalog shows all the categories and sub-categories but selecting a category just gets the message that np pictures match the category.
    What am I doing wrong?
If I try reconnect it says it's not required.
I've tried 4 times and I'm assuming it should work.

This is pretty strange and should not happen.
    Just a quick questions:
    1. Are you using File> Backup feature from Organizer to take backup on an external drive?
    2. Do you see the albums if you had any in your restored catalog?

  • Upgrade from CS2 to CS5 will not connect to Elements 5.0 "catalogue" files.

Until now, I have been seamlessly using CS2 as my Photoshop Editor which was accessed through the Photoshop Elements 5.0 Catalogue function.
Within the Elements catalogues, raw or processed photos were acquired to Photoshop CS2 by left clicking the drop down menu "Edit" > and then left clicking to select, "Edit with Photoshop".
This no longer happens for the upgrade CS5.  How do I restore (re-appoint) CS5 as my external editor, still from within the drop down Edit menu in Elements 5.0?  Note: As the CS5 upgrade "glopped on" to the previous CS2 version, I cannot return to CS2 even if I wanted to -- (I don't).
It must be something obvious that completely eludes me.

    Hi Noel,
Went through the sequence in Elements as you suggested -- and was informed by the folllowing box:
"You do not need to choose Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (dropped the suffixes in each case) as the other editor.Photoshop elements already supports using these editors from the Edit menu and Edit toolbar button."
I tried going through Bridge, again as you suggested:  Bridge Label Preferences > File Type Associations .  However, nothing there to be found in the very extensive list.
I think the problem is access through elements.
It may be that I'll need to buy an Elements 9.0 upgrade to continue using the Elements catalog.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

  • Transferring catalogues from Photoshop Elements 5 to Photoshop Elements 9

The process should be an easy one -- BUT, my new copy of Elements 9 does not list under the FILE column, anything that looks like or works like "Catalogue".
Instead of the listing as per the Adobe tutorial as follows: FILE (then) Get Photos & Videos, (or) New, (or) Open recently edited in Editor, (or) Catalogue
My new software lists the following: FILE (then) New, (or) Open, (or) Open As, (or) Open recently Edited File, (or) Duplicate.
[No sign of Catalogue to be found anywhere -- hence impossible to transfer files/catalogues.]
Note: I use elements for its catalogue function with Photoshop CS5 and Bridge CS5.  New camera required updated RAW-read ability from the old Elements 5.

    Thank you Michael.
So strange -- Elements 5 Catalogue was so clear, so obvious.  Elements 9
appears to revel in its obscureness.  Actually, at the time I wrote of my
confusion I was in the Organizer all along.  BUT, I've yet to find a way of
showing a horizontal task bar, as in Elements 5.  There is a (too) clever
virtually hidden chevron in dark gray about 1/4 distance from the top left,
which when clicked on provides a drop down menu with all required options
-- instead of the always obvious horizontal task bar.  What could they
    possibly have been thinking?
Anyway, as I said in my initial plea for help, my only reason for doing all
this was to be able to collect Canon RAW  images from the 5DII -- into the
elements catalogues.  That in fact does work now.  However, no doubt I'll
be deferring to Adobe Bridge CS5 much more for storage and retrieval.
Elements 9 has little to recommend it for me.  What do the great unwashed
say about "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?"
Thank you again -- very, very much Mike.
    All the best,

  • Elements 4.0 catalogue/do I still need My Pictures?

Hi, I'm new to Elements and new to this forum. I have got my catalogue up and running and am busy learning basic imaging techniques. But my major stumbling block is this:
    1. I don't understand whether or not I still need to retain My Pictures aswell. My camera loads directly into Elements 4.0. When I am in Elements Editor and try to open a file I can't navigate to Elements catalogue, there seems to be no way to get to it. So I end up going to My Pictures to get the photo. There must be something I don't know?
    2. Because of this, after downloading into Elements I am currently copying everything into a new folder in My Pictures. It seems laborious and I am sure I don't really need to do this.
Help much appreciated. Greetings from The Cotswolds in England, Ruthie.

    Ruthie....
Everyone finds there own comfortable way of working but here's my thoughts.
Its no big deal switching from the Editor to the Organiser there's even an Icon to take you there.
To some extent you've answered your own question - to find them from Editor you'll need to remember the name or date of the folder and the filename. If you want to give meaning to the filenames and folders its a long winded process and falls down when you have different subjects within a shot and different groups of shots in a single download. If an image contains Aunty Flo on a Barge do I give the image name Aunty Flo or Barges. If some of the download is family and some a vacation do you make the folder Family or Vacations - which vacation etc.
The Organiser does away with all the bother of thinking about names for the image and names for the folder.
Use the Organiser to create Tags and cross reference your images that way - they are much easier to find. You can assign many tags to the same image - Aunty Flo, Barges, Norfolk Broads etc. Just click these tags and the number of images is narrowed down. The Organiser also lets you search for images by a multitude of different criteria, including date/time - just look at the Timeline Bar at the top of the Photo Well.
When you download your images, you'll only see in the Organiser the ones you've just download. Assign the Tags at this point. I've set up a Tag which says Un-processed which is what I give to all the latest downloads. I can then come back to them and process them later because they are easy to find - just click the Un-Processed Tag. If you're really discplined Edit them straight away.
There are more advantages in my opinion.
    Colin
When you download a fresh batch of images they are the only ones to be displayed in the Organiser

  • How do i reinstall lr5 and restore the backup catalogues. Also preset folder, preferences, preview

Recently, i had to do a clean re-install of windows 7hp. And also i saved the needed data. of course i lost all of my downloaded software etc.  Their is a second drive on my computer with lightroom;its backups and a folder entitled all my photos. The same material for lightroom is backed up to an external hard drive.   How do i go about re-installing lr5 ,  and restore the catalogue back ups and the other folders.? I need a step by step set of procedures here as i  am a computer stupie.  Thanks for your help!

Have a few questions before i do the reinstall.  step #1 is to  reinstall from the original disk or to download from adobe"s website with proper serial #,regeistration #?    Step #2 is to restore the catalogues by double clicking on the latest catalogue backup?(or are all backup catalogue"s clicked)   When i do this backup will this transfer all of my parent folders, subfolders to the left panel of the library module in its original order?    Step 3. After the catalogue restore is done, will this leave this cat. folder   in the same disk under lightroom  or will this folder be deleted.  I have all of the lightroom folders backed up on an external hard drive.   Last step is to move all my pictures from the all my photos folder to lightrm. Is this correct?  How is this done?  By an import in the lightroom software using import, move.or copy on the top import toolbar.  I know i sound paranoid on doing these procedures correctly as i do not wish to lose any catalogues etc..   Thanks for your help!!
Not sure where you came up with these steps from
Step 1 ... either should work, but the download is the most recent version
Step 2 ... double-click on the latest catalog backup, yes
Step 3 ... Catalog is whereever you double-clicked on the backup file, you can move it whereever you want thereafter, using your operating system with Lightroom closed
Step 4 ... no moving of photos should be needed, definitely NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING, if the photos are not linked in Lightroom, then follow these instructions http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm and remember NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING and did I mention that you should not import your photos?
For future reference, you stated that you had Lightroom and its backups on the same drive ... do not do this ... backups must go on a different physical drive

  • Be grateful for your help with Photoshop Elements which I have been using for several years.

Be grateful for your help with Photoshop Elements which I have been using for several years.  Does Elements need to have access to ‘My Pictures’ on Windows as when I remove Photos from ‘My Pictures’, Elements later, when backing up, gives a message that it is unable to ‘reconnect’ to the same picture on elements.  On other occasions when removing a photo from Elements catalogue I also get a similar message when backing up saying ‘unable to reconnect’.  1. Is there a relationship between Elements and My Pictures and is Elements dependant on    the Windows ‘My Pictures’? 2. Why does some photos in Elements in some cases cause them to multiply e.g. double; triple; quadruple; and on occasions even more?  Is there something I need to do to stop this or an easy way I can remove the multiples without spending hours doing it manually one by one?  Am I doing something wrong? My O/S is Windows XP SP2 and windows Vista on my Laptop.  I have been using Elements 5 and have just purchased Photoshop Elements 8.0. (Upgrade) and about to install it. Be grateful for any advice as I do enjoy using the program if only I can resolve this issue.  I am not a PC wiz and mainly use Elements to catalogue photos from which I compile collections and from them slide shows with music.  Any advice appreciated Sonny.t PS Have tried to post this previously but without success so hoping to see message appear and a +response

The organizer doesn't care where you send your photos when you download them via the downloader or where they happen to be when you first bring them in if you use the Get Photos command, but once your pics are in the Organizer, you *must* move them from within organizer or it can't find them. You don't have to use My Pictures at all if you don't want to, but regardless of the folder where you put your photos, if you want them someplace else, you use organizer to do it.

  • Add People in Elements 13 (Second Question)

This is probably an issue of software stability - possibly tied in with the first and similar titled question (AdobeFan27 - 28 Sept 2014). Tried Troubleshooting face recognition issues in Organizer which didn't help.
I have a new load of PSE13 and have imported over 6,000 photos in small batches. Using the Add People button with each batch has increasingly become less and less reliable. Each time it's failed to work I have usually found a computer restart has been necessary to make it work again (although sometimes a second restart has been required). Finally today it has completely stopped working and only a reload of the software has enabled it to Add People again. At each of the failures I have tried closing down applications (like Explorer and Chrome, Outlook and other Office applications) and I could not identify any one application that might have been a cause of the problem.
The visual cue to Add People not working is.....   >click on Add People   >windows flash open and close - these have the appearance on "doing its thing" and then instantly closing - too fast to read anything though.
I hope this is a common bug that is coming to light because it would be a pain to have to reload PSE13 each time I cannot get Add People working.
I will add to this post IF I can identify more symptoms. I am also able to respond to Adobe Support staff with additional information if it'll help.

  • Synching iPod with Adobe Photo Elements 4

I've been syncing my 60GB iPod with my PC via Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 since September and it has worked fine. I recently upgraded to Photoshop Elements 4.0, uninstalling Album in the process. iTunes no longer shows Album as a synchronising option in the Preferences dropdown (fair enough) but nor does it show Elements 4.0 as an option which I guess it should (it only shows 'My Pictures' or 'Choose a folder'). Anybody seen this problem before or know how I can get iTunes to recognise my Photoshop Elements catalogue? I've already re-installed iTunes and the Ipod software with no effect.

Ok, well, the solution is given in the thread of jackstone5, dated December 14. However if you are not familiar with regedit I can imagine that you are hesitating to perform this action. Maybe you can find someone in your environment who does. The solution is not too complicated for someone who is familiar with computers.
Of course it would be better that Apple solves this problem.
By the way, glad to hear that my other problem is not only my problem, as I could nowhere found someone having this problem other than people using Iphoto. Let's hope a solution is around ...
