Elements file saved as PDF --is it PDF/x-1a vector? or is it a raster file?

Hi,
Have a magazine requiring vector rather than raster*. How do I tell which my Photoshop Elements saves it as? And if I find out it is a raster, how do I change it to vector?
As well, since I have no idea how their printer is color profiled, I'm wondering if I should send them a PDF at all. Can a magazine color correct a pdf?

PSE doesn't create the kind of file you need. That's the long and the short of it. PDF creation from PSE is extremely basic and doesn't include much of the information needed by commercial print shops. PSE is meant for home use, not for commercial work, and adobe makes sure that it's very hard to avoid buying pro-level software for pro-level work by keeping those features out of Elements. There is no way to create vector output from PSE.
The best thing to do is to talk to your printer and explain the situation. They may be able to work with something you can output in a regular image format, but it will undoubtedly cost you, because they will have to do much extra work.

Please feel free to rant about the other one hundred previous posts about this problem, if there are any; I certainly did not have time to look through every page of discussions just yet and typing in the searchbox did not give results.
Since every problem here seems to be slightly different and I am not a part of the annoyed Snow Leopard-users mob, I humbly but DESPERATELY ask for help on my own.
I have recently switched from Photoshop CS3 to CS4 because of a simple reason — I thought it would fix this problem somehow.
When it was time for me to save my first, extremely large file (a poster), A3-sized, with approximately 14 layers, I was told by my company to save in .pdf. Now, every single time I tried the app crashed. And surprise, surprise – nothing changed when I flattened the image, saved in .png and then tried .pdf.
Nothing changed either as I tried the same in Photoshop CS4.
I'm running a white MacBook, with OSX 10.5.7.
My processor goes up to 2.2 GHz, with Intel Core2 Duo
And I have 4 GB RAM.
This is so far the only problem I've ever had with Photoshop, but at this point such problems are very unwanted since it interrupts my work.

There are a handful things you can do to resolve this:
Save as JPG. Open Acrobat Professional, File > Create > PDF from file. See if this works best for you
In your image size option within PS, the last option - Resample Image - Change to Bicubic Auto
Include a screenshot of your PDF print setting in the 'Save Adobe PDF' dialog box that pops up when you try to save your file as PDF. Look under 'Compression' options in the left side for Downsampling. Check if the value of Downsampling is less than your PS file resolution. If it is, adjust accordingly. Refer screenshot below
Try changing Compression from JPEG to 'None'. Yes, filesize will dramatically increase. But doesn't hurt to try it out to see if your image quality is as per your desire

When creating a DVD face in Photoshop 13 my save options are limited to .PSE and .PDF. Why can I not save as a jpeg or other file format? This was never an issues in Elements 10 (my previous version).

I just recently purchased Elements 13. I am in the process of creating a DVD face for a video. The design is complete and I would like to be able to save it as a JPEG so I can use it in another program that prints my DVD's. The problem is that it only allows me to save the file as at PSE or a PDF. No other options are available. Why is this? I upgraded from Elements 10. In Elements 10 I have never had a problem saving this type of project as a JPEG. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ANSWER FOUND!
Once I finished composing my question I went back and spent some time to figure out the problem. Rather than choosing the "save as" option, which doesn't work, or attempting to choose "export" (grayed out), the correct option is to choose "export creation", which is near the very bottom of the initial drop down options. That works! I still think it would make sense to have it as an option in the "save as" area.

If you are using Mac, press Apple + I to get the information. It show a table. There is a section call Open with. Change the file with pdf icon to open with indesign. If using PC, just click on the second button on the mouse and open with Indesign.

Saving art boards to a PDF - huge file size

I have a file with multiple art boards with a lot of high res imagery on each one. I need to save these files to PDF individually (or two, three at a time) for my purposes, but when I do, the PDF size seems to encompass the entire file, rather than just the art boards I've chosen to export. For instance, I have 10 Art Boards, but I only export Artboard 1 and 5 to a PDF - my resulting PDF is huge. But, if I were to create a new, separate file with just the two art boards and saved as a PDF from there, my PDF size is about 20% the size. Obviously, I don't want to have to recreate these files every time I want to save as a PDF, which is why I wanted them all in one file to begin with.
Any ideas on how to manage this?

Just export those pages as PDF and make sure you don't check "Preserve Illustrator editing capabilities" in PDF options

Did you try using Preview. If you control click on the PDF on your desktop you can use the "open with" option.

No the pages will open as separate documents in Expert Mode. You really need Acrobat or possibly you could copy and paste the contents into MS word. Then re-save as PDF.

Sounds as if you used Microsoft software to make a PDF. If so, and you didn't use Adobe Acrobat ($$), then you need to get help with Publisher -- Adobe Reader only shows what you make.

Converting a pdf file saved as web or HTML to a doc

I am having problems with open some files i downloaded from web, i had to save and open them in a PDF and choose between web archive or HTML. I tried both and when i then go back to my documents to open this file, the webpage i downloaded it from opens without any of the document text. How can i change this to be a documents.
The files i want to download are lecture notes from the student web and automatically opens as a PDF file.

Safari automatically opens pdf files for faster web experience ..To get them down to your computer as .pdf file instead of clicking on a link you should RIGHT-CLICK that link and choose to save the linked file ..This way safari will not display them and they will be saved on your hdd as .pdf files

Is it possible that the creator of the files set a password? That's usually the only time PSE asks for one, although you may be able to open the file just fine in a pdf program that isn't password-aware.
