Elements Organizer 10 - no audio AND no thumbnails on AVCHD files

Hi All,
I'm running Elements Organizer 10, and am seeing some strange behavior in that, since upgrading to 10 (from 9)
- none of my .mts files will play any sound in the Media Browser viewer and
- new .mts files that I import into the catalog have no thumbnails
The files do have thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
I can play the files, with sound, using both VLC and Windows Media Player.
Importing the files in Organizer 9 did generate thumbnails and playback with audio.
Premiere Elements 10 does generate clip thumbnails and successfully plays audio, too.
So - it seems to be somthing very specific to version 10 and the Organizer - not machine-wide.
I noticed that playback in the Media Browser viewer invoked the Haali Media Splitter I have installed on my machine.  Thinking that might be the wrong codec, I uninstalled it.
I could still play in VLC and WMP, but double-clicking in Organizer gave an error message that no appropriate codec was installed.
So, I installed ffdshow to see if that avc codec could be used, still no luck.
Reinstalled latest version of Haali, back to same behavior (no audio, no thumbnails) in Organizer - everything else working.
So, I can work by dragging the clips from Organizer onto VLC so I can play the video with sound while tagging, but I'm concerned that it's not working and that whatever the base problem will manifest itself more seriously later.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!!

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the input...
I did go back and confirm that I'm running the latest QT for my machine 7.7 (1680.34) according to the QT Player.
Just in case, I re-downloaded the QT Installer and Repaired the installation. No change in behavior in Organizer.
I don't think it's QT that is used for AVCHD files, tho, is it? I tried to play my video in the QT player, and it won't play .mts...
Also, as others suggested, I did attempt to 'activate' the AVCHD plugin - but, didn't get any new popups or dialogs (it might have happened when I originally installed and I didn't pay attention to it)...
I had previously right-clicked on a clip in organizer and selected "Edit in Premiere Elements...", put the clip on the timeline, played and scanned thru the clip, saved the Project.  But, based on yours and the other suggestions, (I did this a few times with different clips) I created a new project, Get Media from Files and Folders, loaded a clip, dragged to timeline, played/scanned, double-clicked to bring up the previewer in Element - everything works as expected.
Back to Organizer - same behavior as before.
Uninstalled Haali again, and tried all of the 'plugin activation' steps again.  No change except Organizer still complains of not having the required codec.
So - for some reason, the organizer thinks it should use the Haali Media splitter as the codec for avchd - everything else on my machine seems to be able to find a more suitable codec - vlc, wmp, pre all work fine.
Did some more surfing on the forums, and found some references to Premiere Pro using the Haali media splitter (?).
So, one other piece of info - Prior to Elements 9, I did have Premiere Pro installed on this machine.  Very nice, but overkill for what I want to do.  So, I uninstalled it prior to installing Premiere Elements 9.  Everything worked fine w/ 9, but not with 10.
So - is there some way to determine which codec Organizer is using and/or force it to use a specific one?
Is it possible (seems likely with the symptoms) that there was some configuration file or registry entry left over from Pr that is now directing Organizer to use the same codec that it previously used (instead of the default)?
Thanks all!!  Normally I'd be able to figure this out, but am pretty new to 'the inner workings' of Pre.
Thanks,
      Scott

  • Elements Organizer 12 doesn't generate thumbnails for .mpg videos produced by Premiere Elements

    I just upgraded from Elements+Premiere 11 to version 12, on Windows 8.1 x64.
I produced a 1st .mpg file (HDTV 1080p 25 img/s), and imported it in Elements Organizer.
Unfortunately, the Organizer doesn't generate any thumbnail for the file.
This is a new "behavior" of the Organizer 12, because the Organizer 11 use to generate thumbnails properly.
I tried to manually update the thumbnail (right click), but after waiting several seconds, there is still no thumbnail appearing.

Here are the results from my test of your situation where you tried to import 3 Premiere Elements 12 created files into the Elements Organizer 12 after their creation and save to the hard drive.
The 3 files from Premiere Elements 12 were
Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with Presets = HDTV 1080p25 High Quality
Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with Presets = HDTV 720p25 High Quality
    Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with Presets = HD 720p25
The same scheme was used for each, and the results were the same for each...
Imported into Elements Organizer 12, File Menu/Photos and Videos/Files and Folders.
In the Elements Organizer 12, each imported with a thumbnail displaying only a filmstrip icon.
Next I double click the thumbnail and got playback of the video in the Elements Organizer 12 without issue.
Next I right clicked the thumbnail and selected Update Thumbnail. It did within a few seconds. The thumbnail then displayed the first frame of the video.
I ran this test on a laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bit computer operating system. Installed on this computer along with Premiere Elements 12...QuickTime latest version, iTunes latest version, a PowerDVD player. Windows Media Player 12 appeared to be there but not yet activated. No VLC player or other.
For the moment I am assuming that codec were essentially from QuickTime and from what Premiere Elements 12 brought along.
    More later.

  • How do I synchronise audio and video with an mpg file created in elements 11 ?

How do I synchronise audio and video with an mpg file created in Premier Elements 11 ?
The source files are VOB files, and there is no problem with those source files.  But after creating the mpg file, the audio can be out of sync by 1 second or even 10 seconds, and sometimes zero seconds (ie perfectly OK).  That varies.  The variation might be linked to some of the VOB files.  ie. some are OK, and some are not.
Can I fix this automatically in Elements 11, or am I doing something wrong ?

    Hartwood,
First, Premiere (both Pro and Elements) do not handle MPEG Audio perfectly - they like some files, but not all files with MPEG Audio. That makes a VOB a less-than-perfect source file. Still, with a bit of work, one should be able to edit it just fine. One of the factors is that there is a very slight block-size difference between the Encoded Video Stream and the Encode Audio Stream in a muxed MPEG-2 file. That often does not play into things, but can cause slight OOS (Out of Sync) issues. Also, both Premieres need to create all I-Frame files for the Video Stream, which is in GOP (Group of Pictures) structure, so what one sees on the Timeline is really a proxy of the MPEG-2 file's Video Stream. The Audio Stream must also be Conformed to PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 32-bit floating point, to be edited. That Conforming is perfect when one has PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit for the Audio Stream, but requires more work, when the Audio Stream is MPEG (one reason that some MP3's do not work well in Premiere). Several factors involved here, and a fair amount of work for the program. That is why DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio works so perfectly.
Now, fixing OOS might be easy, or might require a bit more work. This article goes into some workflows, that might be helpful: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/436751?tstart=0
I can feel your pain, as I almost went crazy trying to fix OOS in a client's Project. They ONLY had the finished DVD, from which to work. The disc met the DVD-standards, so everything ripped/Imported fine, and when the simple edits were done (IIRC, there were four scenes, that had to be shortened, and then several Titles added), everything played fine in the Timeline. However, when I Transcoded that Timeline to be authored in Adobe Encore, two scenes went OOS. I went back to Premiere, and checked - all perfect there. I tried to judge the number of Frames that the Audio was out, in those scenes, and nudged them, tested, nudged, tested, and no matter what I did, I could never get the output files perfect, when Imported into Encore for authoring to DVD-Video. I tried DV-AVI, and letting Encore set the Transcoding automatically (usually a great way to work), I tried manually setting the Transcoding in Encore. I tried outputting to MPEG-2 from Premiere, and Importing that. No matter what I did, those two scenes were just OOS, and I could not even seem to improve them - it was like they were just locked OOS. I finally did some more editing, to break things up a bit, added a cut-away shot here, and there, and minimized the perceived OOS, but could never get it perfect. It was like trying to pick up quicksilver with a pair of tweezers!
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Running elements organizer 12 on mavericks can't import iphoto files since the option doesn't show up

Running Mavericks 10.9.3 with iphoto 9 loaded Elements 12 and went to import iphoto files - but the import option doesn't some "from iphoto" and the file/getphotos and videos/from iphoto doesn't show - what is the issue

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying, but you probably don't want to use "from iphoto" anyway. That's only for when you want to import your entire iphoto library (like when you decide you want to use organizer instead).
The first question is what  are you trying to do? Do you just want to open photos from iphoto into the PSE editor or do you want to import them into the organizer for something?

  • Missing Thumbnails with AVCHD files (.MTS, .MT2S)  Elements V8

I have a Canon HD camcorder so this was a major issue for me.
I use Windows 7 and It works fine in windows explorer : AVCHD files display their thumbnail...
I downloaded a codec pack like k-lite but the result is no more Thumbnails in PSE8.
How can I get the thumbnail feature to work properly in photoshop elements 8 ?

Just received the following email in response to a question I had posted to Adobe...according to this thumbnail issue is supposed to work with v9.  Have you still not seen it fixed?
Thanks for reporting the problem related to MTS file handling in Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0. This problem has been taken care in 9th version, please try out in trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0 and it should work fine.

  • Looking for a way to combine audio and images together into movie file

I am using JMF to make a tiny movie.
The thing is that I've done making sequential images (.jpeg) into a .mov(quicktime) video file, but I am not sure how to add audio (in this case in a .wav file) into this .mov . Does anybody has any idea?
    Thanks.
P.S. this is the file that I am using to generate .mov, which is an example from SUN.

  • Slow file access-Elements 12:  I store all my photo files (".nef" RAW files) in a RAID 1 external hard drive, which the Elements Organizer links to the reference thumbnails.  Over some time - say, the past year, and especially recently, the time to bring

One further bit of information:  I did recently run a "disc scan", in case there were file system errors, then ran defragmentation -- on the external drive.  This did not solve the problem.

I think I'll deal with your different questions in several posts, it'll be easier for me.
    josephunit2n a écrit:
A few comments:  recently, for the first time, I did a full "backup catalog" routine (with external RAID storage connected) to a second external usb drive, which ran successfully (done, at the time, over longstanding concern that even the RAID 1 storage was not enough data security - as you have mentioned).
Good thing, and it's not really a surprise for me, I would have expected no slow down in a process which only reads your RAID drive data.
One big concern:  in all transactions (backup catalog; move to external storage) I always ignore the "reconnect missing files" dialogue.  This is due to past experience.  Long ago, when I ran it routinely, it was a disaster.  At first, I thought I might reconnect a few randomly missing files.  While this was so long ago I cannot recall all details, everything went to hell.  Even after manually locating a "missing" file,  the "reconnect" never worked.  The number of "missing" files skyrocketed, far out of any realistic number.  Even with Adobe phone support (which is critical for such an application - and must be made available again, I have no problem paying for it), the catalog was hopelessly corrupt, and I manually built a new catalog, file-by-file.  Adobe advice then:  NEVER USE "RECONNECT MISSING FILES", which I have followed religiously (while also trying to be meticulous in my transactions, not to ever create any "missing" files).
I have never read Adobe advising to never reconnect missing files. Maybe it's not the best course in all circumstances, but I don't see a possible problem there. What is recommended by Adobe is to always reconnect files before doing a backup... Now, my own experience is that if you don't reconnect before a backup you get a restoration where the catalog still points to missing files and where those missing files have not been backed up, totally logical. I would not consider this question as a BIG concern.
.  Finally, "just for fun", moments ago I connected the RAID storage drive, opened the organizer, and randomly opened a few images in "full screen" view - then opened a scattered group of 4 or 5 images -- and, they all came up promptly!!!!!  So, this "slow access" problem isn't consistent, all the time.  Also, I must comment, your advice to avoid the RAID 1 external usb drive, for future catalog storage, seems "tech superstition", which I will not harshly criticize, as I also have my own technology irrational superstitions.  I believe the computer "sees" this drive no differently than any other external, usb, drive.
There's a difference between 'technology irrational superstition' and 'reasonable doubt due to ignorance' ... Understanding the problems which may arise when using a RAID drive array supposes understanding of:
    - how the organizer catalog recognizes any drive in its database. That's ok for me, but I have no personal experience of such systems. What I can tell you is that most of the problems I have seen with RAID systems were of that kind.
    - How efficiently the organizer deals with the OS when using a catalog stored on the main drive, with adequate RAM and scratch disk space while the files themselves are on the external RAID drive. Some organizing tasks imply writing to the files themselves. The xmp sidecar files (very small) are stored together with their raw parent. The thumbnails are stored in a database in the catalog folder...
    - How the organizer works with the OS (the APIs) and the particular disk driver. (I am totally ignorant, but I have seen similar problems for other Adobe applications in the feedback forum).
... As I said, I have to leave for a moment...
    To be continued!

  • Photoshop Elements Organizer 11 - Drag and Drop to Marked Faces

    Hello,
I have recently upgraded from PSE 10 to 11.  In 10 I used to drag People tags onto autodetected faces which would server to add the tag as well label the mark of the  face (2 birds with one stone).  In 11 when I attempt to drag and drop a People tag onto a marked face, the square and the "Who is this" disapears.  The only way I can find to actually mark the face is by actually typing the name for each person.  Definitely a more painful way of doing it versus drag and drop.  Did Adobe drop this feature or is this a bug I can expect to be fixed in an upcoming update?  Or is this problem that is just local to my machine?
    Thanks!  Rob

That is pretty disappointing!  Regardless of a revamp or not, marching into a NEW version should NOT mean reduced functionality!  I didn’t use the facial recognition in 10 because most of the time it got it wrong!  Also, for my people tags I like to tag (mark faces) with tags of “Family” and “Friends”.  More often than not this represents the bulk of my people tagging.  So now I actually have to type it in or I have to try to use Add People and hope it gets it right more than in version 10.  That is definitely a slower workflow!
Sigh.  OK.   My next question is that it looks like Add people facial recognition is not working at all. It is finding faces but it is not suggesting names at all, even after doing a number to try to teach it.  I will start up a second thread to ask that question.
Beyond this does anyone have any ideas on how to save a time on People tagging?  This represents the bulk of the time I spend in Organizer so making this process work faster is really important to me.

  • I have Elements 10, Lightroom 5 and PS6.  My mac is saying its "running at or near capacity".  i suspect the problem is the Elements organizer, 875 MB, and I don't believe I can import it into my LR catalogue which is on an external drive.  Any suggestion

If helpful, here is some additional info:
I am running OSX version 10.9.4, with 8 GB of memory.

I don't remember how big mine was, but I had loads of pictures in Elements so I guess it should work anyway -- so I'd first try to convert the full catalog, even if it takes some time.
If this really is a problem I'd suggest you break up your Elements catalog into two or more smaller ones -- I remember Elements getting a nuisance with big catalogs.
Btw.: I have the LR catalog on the internal drive, pictures and backups on two external drives. As long as I don't have the money for a big external SSD I think I will keep it that way (my machine is an iMac 21.5 8GB)

I need to be able to capture an audio stream delivered via ethernet using UDP protocol and then save to a wav file.
I currently can capture the data stream but do not know how to format the data to save it to a file. Our format is 16KS/s, 16bit, PCM, no compression.

Did you do the thing about searching in the example database. Let us use that as base for discussion. Those who put in some effort will be rewarded. Also check out the AU file format http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Au_file_format As it is big-endian http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big-endian the numbers can be stored as is in Labview. Must players, matlab, etc can use the AU file format.

    My suggestion:
    Read the help file carefully:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/elements-organizer/using/workspaces.html
Now have a look at the the organizer display layout. Just over the main display panel where thumbnails are shown, there is a drop-down menu to choose the sort order. I assume you are on a recent version of Elements? If you are on PSE12 or 13 you can choose the chronological order (ascending or descending), the filename order, or the import batch. Additionally, if you are viewing an album you can have a manual custom sort.
My other advice is that before you use the organizer, you take the time to read this help file carefully:
Elements Organizer Help | Creating and editing catalogs
The organizer is a very power tool if you understand what it can do and if you don't have misconceptions about how it works. It's a powerful toolset  based on catalogs. It can handle and manage folders and files, but that's not its main purpose. Its ability to manage the information included in the exif metadata of your files and the important information you enter with categories, keywords, captions, notes, ratings or the way you include pictures in albums, creations, stacks or version sets is very powerful.
