Elements v PS7

This might be the wrong forum but no doubt there's someone who uses Elements and Photoshop 7.
I have just "upgraded" to PS7 and not sure this was worth the expense. I do a similar project in Elements 3 regularly and tried the same project in PS7 and discovered a lack of a few tools. Hopefully they are there somewhere but where?
Examples
Cookie Cutter (can't find and alternative other than selection tools)
Custom Shape Tool( ideal for talk bubbles - again no alternative)
Paint Bucket Tool (Not on Tool Bar only through Edit> Fill menu)
Selection Brush (handy little tool)
No Top Icon Tool Bar eg Save - Print - Open - Undo etc
No ' Frame from Video' ideal for AVI capture ( File>Import)
And of course no Red Eye tool
No doubt I'll find a few more as I go on
OK so can get round a lot of this but is this really such a wonderful upgrade. Curves I can get with Shipley's Extras in PSE - I do appreciate the Path Tool and Extract filter but so far that's about it.
It makes me appreciate what an excellent product PSE is value and content.
Am I missing something?
Comments appreciated.
Regards
Glynn

Geff.....
The two versions are aimed at different sectors of the market. Elements is supposed to be more consumer frendly while 7 (which is obsolete and now at version 9) is more for the professional. It takes a lot more driving.
Cookie Cutter is not there
Custom Shapes is on a fly out menu grouped with the Rectangle Tool ( U)
Paint Bucket is on a fly out menu under the Gradient tool (G)
Selection Brush no - but you have Quick Mask (Q) (two icons under the foreground/background selection)
Red-Eye removal - no great loss in my opinion as it seldom works well and just as easy to do other ways
No quick launch Icons - well you can learn the keyboard shortcuts which is just as quick.

  • Will PS7 install on Windows 7 64bit?

Has anyone installed Photoshop 7.0 on Windows 7 64bit with success?
Are there any actions I need to know before attemoting to install it...or any errors I might get and how to remedy them?
I'm not too technical so any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance, I'm about to buy a new PC with Win7 but can't afford to upgrade my ancient PS7 (and it fills my needs so why bother anyway).

It should install and run fine as long as your hard drive is not bigger than 1TB.
Photoshop versions photoshop 7 and earlier can't see a hard drive over 1TB and you'll get a scratch disk full error.
Right now i have photoshop 7 and photoshop elements 2 installed on a 64 bit version of windows 8.
(they are both from the same time period around 2002)
Once you get photoshop 7 installed you should also install the 7.01 update.

  • USING PS ELEMENTS 6 WITH FCS

I'm planning using Elements 6 with FCP 5.1.4 and Leopard as Leopard doesn't work with PS7. Anyone see any objections to the idea ... ? Ta.

We do it fairly often without issue.

  • Integrating a workflow in PS Elements 5, LR1 and Photoshop

Here is a workflow that helps me integrate LR, Elements 5 and Photoshop...
Prior to release of LR1, I used PS Elements 5 to organize my photos, along with RawShooter and PS7.0.
I had hoped to replace both PS Elements and RawShooter by Lightroom - but that is still in the future. My problem in migrating fully to LR is that the tag structure fails to import properly from Elements to LR and I don't have the patience to retag thousands of photos in LR (many others have encountered this issue).
So I have been looking for a way to use the "develop" and other powerful functions of LR + PS while still keeping everything organized in Elements until Adobe fix the Import from Elements function.
First, if you haven't read Kevin K Yong's LR-Photoshop clever idea for workflow, read it first. Kevin's workflow uses two folders ("Develops" and "1A Sortbox") and the autoimport feature to integrate LR and Photoshop:
    www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc34679/15
OK, here's how I build on that:
Set up: I have PS Elements watch "My Pictures"and automatically add new files to the organizer. I have LR set up with Kevin's "Develops" and "1A Sortbox" folders. I have LR "Automatically write changes into XMP". I convert all RAW to DNG.
Now, lets say I want to work on a project:
    1. Find the photos I want to use in Elements and get them into the photo browser (using tags, collections or whatever).
    2. Optionally, select the photos and "Write tag and properties info to photo" (File Menu).
    3. Select all photos and drag and drop from Elements into the LR Grid View. LR imports them in the normal way at their current location. LR will recognise most/some of the tags (not for RAW).
    4. Develop photos as needed in LR.
    5. Export any photos needing work in Photoshop using Kevin's technique, filing the .psd files where desired but somewhere within "My Pictures".
    6. Export finals for printing, web etc.
    7. When finished with the project, go back into Elements, which will automatically add any new Photoshop files into the organizer. Stack with originals if desired.
This takes about 10 minutes to set up, once, and then the flow is straightforward and fairly natural. It makes using LR a pleasure. Try it.
Hope this is helpful to those working with Elements, Regards, Nigel

    Nigel,
I have been searching several forums in order to transfer my Tags and Collections from PSE5 to Lightroom. Your posting seems to work (I have tried one Tag and one Collections) today. I use the PSE5 editor not PS so is there a step I need to take to insure that my changes will appear in PSE5? I am really encouraged with the "workflow" in your message as I have over 30,000 images in PSE5 in various Tags and Collections.
Also I need to see Kevin's technique...where can I find that bit of knowledge? Or do I need it if I do not use PS as my editor.

  • Missing photos and movies in elements 8.0

    Hi all
I just bought element 8.0, convertet my catalog and everything seems to be working fine. I also have auto-analyze on. No crashes.
But I realized that some media is missing (it's not a "linking"-problem. the thumbs dont's even show up - but the file is in the right folder and plays in any other app). when i try to search the folder and add missing content to my catalog nothing is imported. elements tells me all pics and movies are already in my catalog.
I also realized that my catalog is getting smaller and smaller. I started with around 6220 pics. Now (three days in) its only 6190. There seem to be pics/movies being removed over time. I assume this has to do with the auto-analyze option.
    anyone?

Update: The problem seems to be connected to the auto-analyse feature. I suspected that from the beginning since the catalog lost pictures over a period of time. this happened cos the auto analyse was still running going through my whole catalog.
So I reconverted my ps7 catalog, switched off the auto analyse and kept an eye on my picture count. nothing disappeard since I turned the new option off.
This seems to be a bug.

  • "Edit in Photoshop Elements" an Option in Development Module?

In viewing the tutorials for Lightroom (while considering whether to purchase it), I noted that there was integration with PS CS2 (and soon, CS3) and that it works like this: In the "Develop" module select "Photo," then "Edit in Photoshop CS2;" the key here is that once editing in CS2 is complete the saved edits are automatically incorporated back into the Lightroom Library. Because I don't have, and may never need, CS2 (or CS3) along with Lightroom (if I get it) I'd hope that the exact same integration is possible with Photoshop Elements 5. So my question is simple: If PSE 5 is installed along with Lightroom will "Develop" and "Photo" include an option for "Edit in Photoshop Elements 5" and have the same automatic integration with the Lightroom Library? (Or, if PSE 5 is not a listed option but is accessible through the "edit with other" option, will the saved file still be integrated automatically into the Lightroom Library?)
Thanks. (And I did search the forum for this answer; sorry if it was there and I missed it.)

I had a demo copy of elements on my system when I installed the beta version of LR. Along side that I had my old and trusty PS 7.LR found PS7
and I set up Elements as a second option for editing. I bought LR and installed it over the beta version. From then on I was given the option to import from Elements in the file menu.PS7 was greyed outwhen I checked to see if I could still edit under PS7.
The demo of Elements expired so I uninstalled it.LR still offers me the option to import from Elements. I have tried the registry hack and all looks well but it is still grayed out in LR and it still "sees" a program which is no longer on my system. I have had a good look around the system including the registry for remnants of Elements that might still be around but cant see any.
Anyway it seems to me that LR can find Elements if it wants to even if it isnt't there and as I have said elsewhere on this forum, why do we have to hack the registry to get some parts this program to work? Adobe need to sort this and all the other bugs out. They owe it to all of us who have paid good money to them for what seems to be a poorly finished product.

  • How can I efficiently resize photos and add zooms to send to Premiere Elements

    Hi
I am regularly making DVDs in Premiere Elements V3 with about 200 pics from my  V5 Catalogue ,with  some zooms and then adding about a dozen edited video sequences, adding sound, transitions etc in premiere Elements. This is the normal profile of what I do
I now need to find a simple and efficient work flow  to do this.
What I am doing so far ( but it might have to change very soon when I upgrade to V7 depending on how compatible the versions are, and whether they offer better ways to do this) is
         Make Collection in Photoshop
Export to Folder  ( my folder destination for the resized images),  changing the resolution in the dialogue box
Then use that folder as source for Premiere.
    This works EXCEPT
Issue1        The order of the pics was changed ,and was not that in the Collection. This was done during the export phase, so seems to do with PS, rather than the import to PE. It seems random, not date etc
Isuue 2         Now how do I do my zooms, as currently this can only be done in slide show creation , I think,. And I don't think you can the save a slide show to file.
So I am getting a bit confused
At first I used "process multiple images", but it used an extra stage, first "export to file", then  "process Multiple files". This was not as quick but did retain the order.
So if there are suggestions on the best way to do this in general and for PE7and PS7 that would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Chris

update your mac to the latest and greatest lion software.  then you can photo stream wirelessly through wi-fi.  but that is about it.  and beware, lion has had many issues.  make sure you look at the comments people are making on the reviews page and make sure the problmes have been updated.  i have not upgraded yet, for i want to wait to see if they get all the bugs worked out before doing so.  been issues with losing information and firmware issues.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 - extend it's capabilities?

I recently had to purchase elements 8 to replace PS 7 which no longer works on 10.5. Since there is no upgrade path from PS7 to CS4, I bought the lesser application Photoshop elements 8.
I remember reading that there is an expansion type pack to add some additional capabilities to elements available from 3rd parties. is anyone familiar with these and can supply an address for me? Googling has not turned up anything up

As already recommended, post your question on the Adobe forums, as it's their software, and Apple discussions only provide support for Apple products:

  • Premiere Elements 9 Low System Memory

There seems to be a lot of threads on this subject, but no conclusive answers.
I'm getting a "running low on system memory, proceed with caution" error, then it usually hangs (sometimes I can save (or save as which works better)).
    System Info: Dell Studio XPS w/ i7-920 64bit, 6GB memory, 450GB HD w/ 236GB free, ATI Radeon HD3650 w/ 256MB, Windows 7 (64bit), latest drivers.
Virtual memory- custom @ 5000MB min and 15000MB max.
I just installed version 9 after using version 7 w/o problems for several years. Right now, I'm only trying to make a slideshow using jpegs that were massaged using photoshop elements 7 (4.5 x 6 300dpi). File size is generallyaround 2MB but some go as high as 4.
I have shut down everything I can in startup and running files (used enditall2). No additional programs that I can see are open. PE9 just seems to suck up memory until I run out, then I get the error. I have rendered the pictures after every 4 additions (PITA!).
When I first got the message, I un-installed PE7 and PS7, then uninstalled PE9 and PS9. I then re-installed PE/PS9. No help there. I initially had the files on a portable usb HD, but moved everything to the main (C:\) drive in my video folder.  I'm using the PE9 project settings: NTSC-DV-Standard 48KHz.
Appreciate any help I can get on this. I've already wasted way to much time on this.

First, do both a Save_As (increment your Project's name), then do a Save_As_a_Copy. I would Copy that copy to the external, for safe keeping.
Win7 has a better Windows Indexing system, than prior versions, so I do not know how much difference that will make. The 8GB RAM can likely be easily, and inexpensively bumped up to 16GB (make sure to match any RAM 100%). I would also take a look at this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2910195#2910195 and look into removing any unnecessary running programs, while you edit.
Take a look at your Windows Virtual Memory Page File, and see how it's managed, plus the size (if dynamically managed, then Min and Max). Allocating more HDD space to the Page File, if you have the HDD space. For a video-editing rig, I like to statically manage my Page File, and set it up, when I first install the OS, before the HDD's get filled to any level. Again, Win7 is better with the Page File, and with a 64-bit OS, if one has the installed RAM, then the Page File will see less use, than with 32-bit OS's.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Scratch Disk Full error for PS7 installation in Windows 7

Can anyone from Adobe tech support tell me how to install my own copy of PS7 on my new Windows 7 computer without having the Scratch Disk Full error show up?  I am comfortable around my computer but am certainly not a tech wizard and it would be helpful if there was a set of specific steps I could take. I've read forums about partitioning but I don't want to make a wrong step and screw everything else up. Also, is this a problem with the more recent Photoshop CS versions?

Well, I've been able to install my PS-7 on my virtual drive in XP mode somehow (I got the 'disk full' pop-up, but then it seemed to install it anyway- I don't remember if it was the curse I leveled at it or what- and it still seems to run.  I can actually access images from the Windows 7 side C: drive after opening Photoshop and going to 'open/ C:/ My Photos (or whatever)', but images I open in Windows 7 have to be saved on my hard drive before I can access them in Photoshop in XP mode. I'm still not sure where the new images will be stored and if they will be able to be accessed from both XP and Windows 7 mode (my gut says "fat chance"), and I can't have my Windows 7 images open in Photoshop natively.
I have therefore decided to add to the (probably swelling) coffers of Adobe by buying a shiny, brand new, squeaky-clean, and (hopefully) fully functional copy of Photoshop Elements 10 to install on my Windows 7 side, so now I can avoid having some lame 'viewer' program open my images.  Ain't technology grand?

  • Premiere Elements 7 freezes, haults, blows up, etc.

I have recently purchased premiere elements 7.0 and I am not happy with it. I have a Dell XPS system with 2GB Ram, and over 200GB of free space on my hard drive. I am creating a movie with JPG's from my Canon DSLR that have been downsized them to 1024 x 680 before putting them in. My movies have been downloaded from a Sony Handycam HD camera to the wmv format before bringing them into Premiere Elements. I render my pics and movies everytime I put around 10 into the project and then do a save. I have tried to create a 3 1/2 hour movie on DL DVD's but this program seems to blow up all the time and eventually won't even load the project. I have exported small projects to avi format and reloaded them, which seems to work but after converting to wmv then exporting to avi and then bringing them back into premiere elements, the movies seem blurry. I decided to cut my project in half and I still have memory problems. Premiere says I am running low on memory and better save the project. When I check how much memory I have left, I have 760MB left. I have even closed everything on the task bar. I continue to get memory problems when I don't have memory problems, or the program elements.exe blows up with a "software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at location 0x78138aa0). My most recent problem is that I was finaly able to put together a movie about 1 1/2 hours, rendered it, put my theme into it and saved it. Now I am trying to burn, with everything shut down in the system, just elements running and I can watch the memory start at about 1.5GB and it goes to about 650MB and the burn stops, and the program disappears from my screen. I have tried everything adobe says to do on their KB site but nothing seems to help. Anyone have a clue.

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I have found a way to make PE7 work with a system like mine. Read below:
I'm trying to put a movie together using JPG's and WMV movies. I have about 450 JPG's that I made all 720 width by using PS7, I let PS7 pick the hight. The movies came from my Sony Handycam HD camera and I used the Sony software to make them into wmv movies. I put them on my hard drive. Why did I use wmv - for some reason, when I used the Sony software and downloaded the movies to MPG, the sound did not come with them. As I said before, PE7 could not handle all my JPG's and movies (total of about 4 hours worth). I was hoping to put a 4 hr movie on a dual layer DVD. Forget that. I couldn't even put a 2 hr movie together. PE7 sometimes just went away on the screen, or I received a C++ error, or memory getting low when I still had 750MB's of memory left and 100GB left on my hard drive and just either froze or disappeared from my screen. I couldn't even move the movie bar too much without PE7 crashing. I found that as I worked in PE7, trying to put a 2 hr movie together, l would have to load about 10 JPG's, do a save, then render them, do a save, bring in about 5 movies, do a save, render those. I kept doing this for days, but as I got about 1 hr worth of movie, PE7 would crash all the time. I finally got 1 hr and 50 minutes all saved and rendered with all my markers, etc. Ready to go right. Wrong. When I tried to burn, the encoding right before the burn would blow up all the time and I couldn't burn the DVD. Days and days of trying to produce a movie and PE7 would just blow up everytime.
    My system:
Laptop - Not the best for PE7
Dell XPS M1730 Dual core, 2GB Ram, 200 GB HD with 120GB left to work with PE7, 512 Geforce video card. PE7 says this is enough - wrong
    OS -XP with SP3
Everything turned off on the task bar.
About 1600 MB left of RAM to work with
This system exceeds PE7 requirements but it is not enough.
Here is a way to create a 2hr or 4hr movie with the system I have:
Continue to load 5-10 jpgs, save them, render them, load 5-10 short movies, save the project, render the project and save the project. Don't go to long without rendering and saving your project. Continue until you get to about 20-30 minutes worth of movie in your project. Do NOT put any markers in because they will be lost when you do continue to do what I did to create a 4 hr movie. You will do them later. Now go to File and export to a Movie. This will put it in AVI format. Once it is saved, start another new project. Start it where you left off and do the same thing again and again until you have all your AVI movies. I ended up with 5 avi movies. Now start your last new project. Get Media (grab each avi file you saved). Put them in order. Now you can put in your markers, title, etc. and shouldn't have memory problems. You're ready to burn. It worked. I finally have a 4 hr movie through PE7 with the system I have above. I forgot to say, I also run a program called FreeRam XP Pro (free shareware). Before starting my burn, I would use FreeRam XP Pro to free up memory. Many times after a render and save, I would use FreeRam XP Pro to free up memory.
I wish Adobe would let everyone know how PE7 really works. You would think by the ads, that my system would work properly. I hate to see how PE7 will work doing HD type movies from my camcorder. I will have to experiment with that one later. Right now, I am tired of working with PE7 over the last 2 weeks.
Again, thanks everyone for helping out here. I hope this helps some others that are frustrated with PE7.

  • Photoshop vs Elements 6 comparison?

Anyone know if a comparison exists between the two pieces of software? I use an older Photoshop, but want to know which features I would loose if I downgraded to the new Elements.
    Thanks!

PSE v6 is a pretty good product and only US$90. You could buy it and try it. Keep all the packaging intact and if you feel you need full expensive PSCS maybe you can resell it.
    My
    i guess
is that PSCS4 will be out around the end of this year (based on ~18 month product cycle) if that enters into your thinking. A lot would have to do with which PS you own. IF you own PS7, CS or CS2 just buy the PSCS3 upgrade for $200. Most likely PS7 will not qualify for an upgrade to PSCS4 so if you own PS7 you probably should upgrade now to avoid forever losing the ability to do a $200 PSCS upgrade.

  • CS2 vs Elements

Probably a dumb question to most of you but if I have CS2 do I really need to maintain, upgrade or even use Elements.
    Thank you.
    Mike

A million thanks to all for the replies.
I have PS7, CS2, Image Ready, Elements 2 and 4 on my box. I find I use Elements most often for the ease and will use CS2 when I learn it. Considering deleting PS7 since I seldom use it now.
I just put the PSE 4 upgrade on yesterday so not to familiar with it yet. I have been using Thumbs to organize photos. Funny thing is that when I installed the PSE 4 upgrade it created a new directory and left PSE 2 alone so I have both. Nothing in the instal directions about removing ver 2. Guess I can remove ver 2 without messing up 4?????
Looked at PSE 4 enough to know I am going to love it once I figure out how to use more than the basics.
Thank you all again. Mighty glad I joined.

  • Using Adobe Bridge with Photoshop Elements

I have an iMAC with iLife 08.
I take photos in RAW format with a Nikon camera.
I have been editing photos this way:
After uploading photos to iPhoto, export them as jpg to a new folder on the desktop, external HD or wherever. I open Photoshop Elements, edit the exported photo.
Then I'm stuck with my edits outside of iPhoto, unless I then import them back into iPhoto. It works, but it's cumbersome.
Today I thought I'd try a different route. I opened Photoshop Elements, and tried to use Bridge to browse photos. I can find the iPhoto library easy enough, but if I click on it, it opens iPhoto, and I'm stuck - can't open the photos in Photoshop.
I am hoping that if I do it correctly, I can save my edits directly back into iPhoto.
    Any ideas?

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
