Elevating Server 2012 to take over for a SBS machine.

Greetings everyone
Are there any special considerations or steps that need be done when elevating my BDC running Server 2012 from a PDC running SBS 2008? We are wanting to remove the SBS machine entirely as we no longer need it and could possibly be of use to one of our clients
down the road.
Thank You
Additional Info: We have already migrated Exchange to the cloud and is no longer hosted on our SBS server. The only function the SBS server has at the moment is being the PDC.

Hi Jerry,
If we want to migrate SBS 2008 to Windows Server 2012 standard, the following blog can be referred to as reference.

I would like to know if there are any plans for SQL Server 2012 Change Data Capture for Oracle by Attunity to support versions of Oracle 12 and if by when.

I have asked from the author of

I will either ask him to answer here or I would be a messenger.

  • Which version of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 OLE DB Provider for DB2 needed?

    Hello, first time posting.....
I am developing an SSIS package that needs to connect to DB2 tables. My environment does not have the necessary providers installed (SQL Server 2012 OLE DB Provider for DB2).
I am running SSIS on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard server, w/ SQL Server 2012 R2 installed.
I noticed OLEDB Provider for DB2 v4.0 for SQL Server 2012 does not support Windows Server 2008 R2.
Also, there appears to be a version 5 OLEDB Provider for DB2, bundled with SQL Server 2014 Feature Pack, but I am not running SQL 2014.
Could someone please tell me which version I need to install for Windows Server 2012 R2, running SQL Server 2012 R2?
    Thanks!

Also, there appears to be a version 5 OLEDB Provider for DB2, bundled with SQL Server 2014 Feature Pack, but I am not running SQL 2014.
The DB2 OleDB Provider is completly independend of the used SQL Server/SSIS Version; you can use that one.

  • New Server 2012 R2 server to take over for 2008 R2 - confused about alias necessity

    Hello,
Have Server 2008 R2 running in a small environment (35 users).  It was time to get new hardware and it has been setup with Server 2012 R2.  Already promoted to DC and running DNS.  Ready to transfer FSMO roles over to the 2012 R2 server.
    My concern/confusion comes here:
Users have network drives mapped to old server (i.e.
    \\dc1\share)
New servername is for instance "dc2"
Do I demote dc1, remove it from the environment and create an alias named dc1 pointing to dc2, thus, networked drives and network printer shares continue to work, or is there a better way to do this?
    thanks

imho just update mapped drives using gpo and that's all
if you have just one server for all stuff, don't demote old one , keep 2 servers alive (if you can, I don't know, maybe you need give old one away) and you will have redundancy. Then if you got 2 servers do DFS shares (shares will have names not bind
to servers name so you can add, replace server's with no problems and have redundancy of shared folders too)

  • How can i use ONE server 2012 to be DC for a domain on the WAN only.. NO LAN. and NO VPN..

I need to run an active directory that is on a WAN (Utah). a server 2012 standard will be the DC with 60Mbps internet speed both up and downstream.
approximately 100 clients/member systems will be all over the united states. NO VPN. only via internet. I can use SSL certificate for secure ldap.
I need this setup to use GPO for different permissions and policies instead of manually doing those on each windows 7 or 8 professional system.
    Ideas??

    Daniel,
I think since this will be the ONLY system that will be running as a DC providing ADDS and the Direct access server, i should follow this advice from the article you sent:
For users who never connect directly to the Contoso intranet or through a VPN, they must use the DirectAccess
Offline Domain Join process to initially join the appropriate domain and configure DirectAccess. When this process
is complete, the users log on normally and have the same experience as if they were directly connected to the Contoso intranet.
Because remember, no user will ever connect directly to the subnet where the server is. so do an offline join First and then start managing.. Only thing im worried about is: they keep saying that the direct access function has significantly improved in windows
    8. hmmmmm many systems will be using windows 7 Pro 64Bit. Some windows 8.1 Pro 64bit. should i worry?

    Hi biionut,
Did you install SQL Server 2012 Replication Components on the IIS server?  The steps to install replication components are covered in
How to: Install SQL Server Replication Components.
Also, is your IIS server running 64-bit Windows?  If so you will need to allow 32-bit applications to run on the IIS server:
    cscript %SystemDrive%\inetpub\AdminScripts\adsutil.vbs set w3svc/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

  • Can I install Windows Server 2012 r2 essentials over Windows 7 Pro

I have new hardware that came with windows 7 pre-installed. It meets and exceeds hardware requirements. Can i install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials on this machine. What is the procedure? Any help would be grateful.
    Thanks
    Woodrow

    Hi.
I agree with Milos on this; if you want to install Windows Server 2012 Essentials on a machine which suppose to use Windows 7, I would use it solely for test purposes.
Could you tell us what the computer specifications are???
For anything more serious (and I can see that you want to use this machine for accounting software), I would suggest purchasing a server machine.
However, if you really really want this machine to be Windows Server 2012 Essentials, check this article on technet:

  • SQL EXpress Server 2012 Installed in VM for RD Connection Broker

    All,
    I have big trouble now...
I have 2 cluster machine and created one Virtual Machine in the cluster and installed SQL Server Express 2012 in VM.
In both cluster machine installed SQL Client 11.0.  and RD Connection Broker installed one of the Cluster machine, while configure RD HA it throws error Please refer screen shot.
Is it right to install SQL server on Virtual Machine ?
Is it possible SQL Server 2014 Standard installed one of the cluster machine and RD Connection Broker enable both cluster machine and make HA of RD Connection Broker HA ?
What is the best way to achieve to enable RD Connection broker with in Cluster machine(2 Node) ?
Please any one guide to us.
    Regards
    Venki

    Hi Venki,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Generally the error which you are facing occurs due to permission and security issue on SQL server. we need to specify the permission during RDCB setting.  Here suggest to create the database manually and check the result.
    CREATE DATABASE 'rds_db'
Where rds_db is the database specified in your connection string
    DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=<SQL Server Name>;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;DATABASE=<DB Name>
Grant DBO permissions to the service account on the RDS server and try to run your wizard again.
Also when configuring RDCB HA, we need to create a local folder to store database which is “Remote SQL file systems”. And if local path is used create a folder on the root directory of the SQL Server (C:\RDCB).
Please check below article for more information.

  • SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB parm for keeping unicode char

in developer's windows 8.1 pc, the SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB does not seem to keep Unicode like \U2221. it get translated to the plain - instead of keeping as
    −.
what  parameter od I need to setup to make sure it keep such character as is

    Hi fs - ab,
You know that this forum is to discuss the VS IDE, to make this issue clearly, could you share us a screen shot for this issue? Where did you change your localDB with Unicode?
I did some research about it.
LocalDB supports two kinds of instances: Automatic instances and named instances.
•Automatic instances of LocalDB are public. They are created and managed automatically for the user and can be used by any application. One automatic instance of LocalDB exists for every version of LocalDB installed
on the user’s computer. Automatic instances of LocalDB provide seamless instance management. There is no need to create the instance; it just works. This allows for easy application installation and migration to a different computer. If the target machine
has the specified version of LocalDB installed, the automatic instance of LocalDB for that version is available on the target machine as well. Automatic instances of LocalDB have a special pattern for the instance name that belongs to a reserved namespace.
This prevents name conflicts with named instances of LocalDB. The name for the automatic instance is a single v character followed by the LocalDB release version number in the format xx.x. For example, v11.0 represents SQL Server 2012.
•Named instances of LocalDB are private. They are owned by a single application that is responsible for creating and managing the instance. Named instances provide isolation from other instances and can improve performance
by reducing resource contention with other database users. Named instances must be created explicitly by the user through the LocalDB management API or implicitly via the app.config file for a managed application (although managed application may also use
the API, if desired). Each named instance of LocalDB has an associated LocalDB version that points to the respective set of LocalDB binaries. The instance name of a LocalDB is sysname data type and can have up to 128 characters. (This differs from regular
named instances of SQL Server, which limits names to regular NetBIOS names of 16 ASCII chars.) The name of an instance of LocalDB can contain any Unicode characters that are legal within a filename.
A named instance that uses an automatic instance name becomes an automatic instance.
    Reference:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh510202(v=sql.110).aspx
It seems that it is related to the SQL Server, am I right? If so, maybe the SQL Server forum would be better for this issue.
If I have misunderstood this issue, please feel free to let me know.
    Best Regards,
    Jack

    Hello,
In this case, we could convert the text value to varbinary type before storing them to sql, and we could convert it back to the encoded one, you could change UTF-8 to the one you are dealing with.
You could refer to the suggestions shared by Filip Ekberg in the following thread.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11859926/load-or-convert-varbinary-from-sql-to-textbox-text
Here's an example on how you convert a text to bytes and then back again:
    var bytes = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes("test");
This will give you a byte array that looks like this:
    { 116, 101, 115, 116 }
Now to get the text again, you can use Encoding.UTF8.GetString() like this:
    Encoding.UTF8.GetString(bytes);
This means that you could simple do this when saving the value:
    cmdb.Parameters.AddWithValue("@text", Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(textreview.Text));
And then when loading it back you simply do this:
    textreview.Text = Encoding.GetString((byte[])dr["text"]);
    Regards.

  • Windows Server 2012 The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured

    Hi
I have a standard Windows Server 2012 that is hosted in the cloud by a hosting provider -
This server has been up and running fir 6 months - recently we have been getting a warning
"The licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured" - The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server.
Yet, we only use this with 2 connections as part of the standard licence agreement and this server is not used as a user's desktop only an ftp and web server- do therefore we do not need to purchase any cal licences (we have another server with the same
hosting company that does not have this issue and has been up for 18months)
Please can someone advise how I resolve this issue, the hosting company states that I must resolve it as they only host and resell the server licence
    Thank-you
    Richard Steele

    Hi Richard,
You need to uninstall Remote desktop session host feature. After removing it, you will default two connections which does not need to purchase RD CALs'.

  • Where do I download a Windows Server 2012 R2 .iso from, for use with Hyper-v?

    Hello,
Where do I download a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard .iso from, for use with Hyper-v?
The only official download I can find is the evaluation version from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-r2
Is it recommended to use the evaluation version and then license it to make it a full version, or is there a better official download?
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi Brian,
I don't personally have an MSDN subscription.
So using the evaluation versions is ok?
With a Windows Server 2012 R2 license, you can have two
    Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual
machines, so I assume I can turn evaluation version VMs into full fledged servers?
    Thanks
    Paul
How did you acquire a Server 2012 R2 license without any installation media? Can you get the installation media from the same source? How did you install 2012 R2 on the host?

  • Running Prime Infrastructure in HA mode but the primary server won't take over from the secondary

We're running Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.3 in High Availability mode, or atleast we're supposed to.
At first everything seemed fine. We were using the primary server and the failover worked without a hitch when we tried it.
Then the problems started. I think it was at the same time as we increased the disk-size and therefore had to fail over.
When looking into the primary server using CLI everything seems fine but the service doesn't fail back to it. We've even tried to restart the secondary server in order to force the primary server to take over but it didn't work.
In about 2 weeks we need to upgrade Prime and while doing that we would prefer to have our HA working so that we can continue monitoring our network.

    Hi,
With Windows Server 2012 Standard, I can install the OS on up to two virtual machines.
For physical machines, how many physical servers can I install the OS on if I don't use any VMs?

    Hi,
Just to add, each license covers up to two physical processors. If you have more than two physical processors in a server, you need to assign additional licenses for it.
