Elgato Eye TV for DTT

I am thinking about buying the eye tv for dtt for my imac g5. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information about exactly what channels you can watch and if you need to plug into a freeview box to receive channels - will it be the same as the other eye tv products and if so, will i be able to watch all of the same freeview digital channels that i receive on my freeview box on normal tv set? Just wondered if anyone out there can help a bit before I buy one - any ideas what high street shops sell them and how much they are?

NikR, I bought a new iMac in December and soon followed it with an Eye TV device which I bought from the Apple Store in Sheffield. The Apple Genius there was really helpful and said that the Miglia (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/61114042/wo/ij4RhNFXhqg12VsV kMJ20RccOyM/1.0.21.1.0.8.25.7.11.3.3)
was cheaper and uses the same software as the Eye TV I was looking at (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/61114042/wo/ij4RhNFXhqg12VsV kMJ20RccOyM/3.0.21.1.0.8.25.7.11.2.3).
The main difference apart from the cost is that the Eye TV comes with a small aerial, whereas you will need to plug your house aerial into the Miglia.
Actually I have the Eye TV set up with my house aerial as I am in a weak signal area and need a higher aerial to get a good picture. You can get all Freeview radio and TV channels and the software is very easy to use. The images when produced onto DVD are excellent. I use Roxio Toast.
Hope that helps.

  • Elgato Eye TV for recording TV to iPod

I'm considering buying Elgato's Eye TV in order to record TV shows to then transfer to my computer and iPod. I see that they now have Eye TV2, which has the ability to transfer to iPod, however, I can't really tell if this is just the software to go with the Eye TV unit, or what. Since I'm not interested in doing a whole lot of this, I don't want to invest a great deal of money. Also, does anyone currently use Eye TV, and if so, which model is best suited to use with DirecTV?
I'd also be curious to know how long it takes to convert the files so they can be used in iTunes?
Any thoughts or experience will be greatly appreciated.

  • Can I run 2 monitor with one of the monitor having Full Screen for Elgato Eye TV?

My mac mini has Elgato 'Eye TV' software that runs in 'Full Screen'.  I want to keep this setting & also connect another monitor to the macmini & use other Appilications on the other monitor?  Can I run 2 monitor with one of the monitor having Full Screen for Elgato Eye TV?
    My early 2009 macmini can run Mac OS 10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8

Yes, run one from HDMI and the other from Thunderbolt/minidisplayport sockets. In EyeTV Preferences check the screen you want for full screen use and make sure your Dock is on the other one.

  • Elgato Eye TV 250 makes iMac "pop"?!

Just hooked up Elgato Eye TV 250 a few days ago to my new (Christmas) 24" iMac which has worked flawlessly from day one. I now notice that whenever the Eye TV application is open, every so often I hear a single pop come through my iMac. I haven't timed it, but I'm guessing it happens maybe twice every half hour (?). I am using a pair of external speakers (Altec Lansing) that work without any problems. I can't really tell if the pop comes from the speakers or from the computer itself. It's not a huge deal--a little annoying perhaps--but just thought I'd see if anyone knew what this was or, more importantly, if it could be doing any kind of damage?
    Thanks!

I've been using my eyeTV with my iMac 24" for just about a year with Comcast digital cable. I am able to view HD (16:9) content on those channels that are not scrambled. Today, I added a Direct TV STB (not HD) and I'm able to view razor sharp digital 4:3 as my STB is not HD capable. I don't have a HD box handy, but I would suspect that if you have one, you should be able to view the D*TV HD programming including movies. I know someone who also has the D*TV HD bundle and he routes his composite video out to a Samsung DVD Player/Burner. He can create movie DVDs in 16:9 "HD" using this setup. His TV is connected via HDMI from the DVD player so he can watch those movies in real time as well.
My only question right now is that while I can see the D*TV Guide on my mac's screen... when I switch channels with the mouse, it shows the change... but remains on the previous channel. So I have to use the D*TV remote to switch channels... a real PITA.

  • Etv for DTT - No Signal on Startup

Bought the EyeTv for DTT and have been pretty impressed.
One major problem is that every time I startup my Mac the unit seems to wake (the blue light comes on) and the software loads but there is a black screen with 'No Signal". I have to unplug the device and then plug back in to get a sginal.
Gone through a number of email exchanges with Elgato and tried numerous possible solutions without any success.
Hoping someone here may have some advice while I await my next instalment from Elgato (currently waiting for my fifth response - thank goodness they're pretty quick).
    Any thoughts?

Using EyeTV 2.1 after advice from Elgato to update. That didn't help but since my post I tried passing the T2 through a powered USB hub and it seems to have solved the problem. It's also improved the picture quality. I've written to Elgato with my findings as this seems to suggest a potential design fault with the T2 which relies on USB for its power. Fortunately I'm using this on an iMac so using a USB hub isn't too much of a problem.
    Thanks for your interest.

  • Late 2009 iMac running Yosemite freezing and won't wake up when Elgato Eye TV starts to record?

As above really, not much more to add.
My husbands late 2009 iMac recently upgraded to Yosemite (latest update installed yesterday) freezes while in sleep mode and has to be 'force shutdown' by holding power button down and then restarted to get it going again.  Recording is stopped.
The Elgato Eye TV is a dual tuner with latest update.
Sometimes it wakes the computer up and begins recording, sometimes not.
No key taps or mouse jiggles get it to wake nor a quick press of the power button, I can hear the computer running and have to hold the power button down until all is quiet then fire it back up.
Other times it just doesn't wake the computer at all and start recording.  I am all out of things to try, I think he had this problem before but not as badly when the iMac was running Snow Leopard.

    Hi Boaz,
I´m facing exactly the same with my Mini which is remotely controlled by a MacBook via Screensharing. Everything works fine unless the Mini goes to sleep. After that I´m not able to wake it up by the MacBook and Wake on LAN (Wol). Even the share is not listed in Finder´s sidebar anymore. It simply doesn´t show up in the share sections anymore. When I log on to my router I can see, that MacMini is not active and I can send WoL package from the router. That brings the Mini back alive, although it still doesn´t show up in the Finder sidebar. When I connect to the Mini via Finder "Connect to share" and type in: vnc://ip-MacMini I can use screensharing again.......
Also I faced the problem with indexed network phantoms....means my Mini was listed in network shares with several different indices e.g. MacMini(2) and (4) and so on..... I wasn´t able to connect and curiously these phantoms show up even when my Mini was shut off! Looks like bonjour or something else is not working properly....
I fixed phantoms by reseting my router (AVM firtzbox), which worked out perfect since yesterday and no indexed phantom is showing up anymore.....
Haven´t fixed the screensharing or waking up thing yet....
I was also taking part in beta testing program and reported these problems to Apple. In Mavericks everything worked really perfect!

  • Elgato TV Tuner for G4 Powerbook 17"

I have a G4 Powerbook [1.67GHz/1GB RAM running 10.3.9]. Does anyone have first hand experience with the Elgato TV tuner for Mac? Can you get a near, full screen image or is it some mean little window floating on the screen? Thanks for whatever you can contribute.
    PowerBook 17" & G4 Quicksilver desktop   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I've had my ElGato TV tuner for several years. I really like it. It works like a charm on my pb G4. You get three choices of picture size, smalll, medium and full screen.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to connect the pb to the TV. Somehow, I just can't figure out how to connect the S-video and the audio. Or, is it all contained in the S-video? Can anyone explain and/or tell me what kind of cable and connections I need?

  • Elgato Eye TV Hybrid S-Video signal shows no colors

    Hi,
I have an Elgato Hybrid for my MBP. When I connect my Sony dvd-recorder to it (thru S-Video) I get a sharp picture but it only shows in black and white. No colors.
I have a professional scart to S-Video cable. Someone suggested me to change the settings of my MBP but I don't know where or how this can be done.
Perhaps I have to alter the settings of Eye TV as well? I don' really know.
Settings are correct; Eye TV input is set to S-Video

Seems the settings of my dvd-recorder were not correct: when I changed them to S-Viseo out all was working well.

  • Elgato EYE TV EZ Experience

I have been thinking about Elgato product for my iMac G5 but i am not sure about the efficiency/quality of TV adaptor for Desktops
Has anyone experience the eye TV EZ? I am quite interested about this one to use TV and most of it plug in a Nintendo, but not got the best feedback.
Is it really nice and fast stuff like elgato pretends?
If you have any feedback, you are welcome...

I currntly own a EyeTV USB, an older model, while I'm not going to tell you that I have HD quality, it is a clearer picture than what you'd get on you run of the mill TV connected to a cable box.
on an iMac, you'll notice the fans rev up a little higher than normal.. the EyeTV is software driven not hardware driven, so it'll tend to get the system quite hot if running for hours on end. Though, it'll be fine to watch an evening of prime time TV, just don't leave it running all night as you may eventually fry something. (like a G5 CPU)
If you do get this Elgato product and you do accidently leave it on over night and wind up with unusually fast running fans, shutt off the iMac and manually restart the system holding the power button until it makes a funny beep noise. This will reset the section of the mother board that controls the system fans.
    I hope this helps!

I can't answer you specifically on the EyeTV EZ but for what it is worth, I have an EyeTV 200 and am impressed with the quality of the hardware and software, ease of use of the software and the quality of the picture I get when I watch a show or record it on my hard drive. I believe the software you would get with the EyeTV EZ would be the same so that part directly applies. But hopefully someone else will jump in with their impressions of the EZ hardware and its picture quality.

  • Red Eye removal for pets

    Hi,
I'm using PE 4.0 and have been unable to get the red-eye removal tool to work with pet eye. I suspect it doesn't work because pets reflect yellow, green and even blue light instead of red. Is this a known limitation? Is there an alternative method in PE for removing pet eye?
    Thanks,
    Tom S.

Thanks for the tips. I searched for Wendy Williams' suggestions in the forum but haven't found them.
I've been experimenting with both of Mark's procedures in the meantime. Method 2 gave the best results when I modified it to preserve the glint in my pet's eyes. The modified Method 2 (using PE 4.0) is as follows.
    1) Use Layer 1 to preserve the glint:
    a) Select the background layer and use the magic wand tool to select the saturated white glint of each eye. I like the "add to the selection" option here - saves time. Copy the pixels selected and then turn off the selections (Select|Deselect).
    b) Create a new layer (Layer 1, w/ defaults of normal blending and 100% opacity), select it and paste.
    2) Use the brush tool as in your Method 2 to black out the pupils:
    a) Create a new layer (Layer 2, w/ defaults of normal blending and 100% opacity) as the middle layer and select it.
    b) Set foreground color to default black (or use the eyedropper tool to pickup a natural dark shade near the pupil from the Background Layer).
    c) Paint over the pupil in Layer 2. Layer 1 should be over Layer 2 so that the glint is preserved despite the painting of Layer 2.
I did find a bug in PE 4.0 when doing this. In panning a zoomed picture from within the editor, I somehow got the layers to be out of sync with each other. When this happened I needed to start over.
A trick that doesn't work is to use Enhance|Adjust Color to change the pupils to red and then use the Auto Red Eye fix. What happens is that the tool does not recognize the color of animal eye irises and the tool changes them into pupils with disturbing results.

  • "Red-eye" removal for dogs

The red-eye removal tool works great in people, but not in dogs or other animals, mostly because their eyes don't reflect red.
What is the best way to do this? Is there another program that will do this automatically?

Basically humans have one reflective layer and animals have two. Here is an explanation I found with a Google search:
"The consistently red color of the human reflex derives from the red blood pigment hemoglobin. Light from the flash picks up the red from blood vessels encountered during its bounce off the retina, just as reflected sunlight picks up the color of a red sweater.
Why, then, do animal reflexes come in so many other colors and seldom in red? The answer lies in the tapetum lucidum, a highly reflective, variably pigmented membrane backing the retina in animals with good night vision (including dogs, cats and most domestic animals) but entirely absent in humans. The tapetum lies directly behind the retinal photoreceptors. (Nova's The Nocturnal Eye nicely illustrates the anatomy).
The tapetum enhances low-light vision by giving retinal photoreceptors a 2nd crack at any incoming light that manages to escape absorption (detection) on the first pass. In dogs, at least, an additional boost may come from tapetal fluorescence, which shifts incoming wavelengths into better alignment with the peak spectral sensitivities of the photoreceptors. Tapetal pigments surely come into play here.
When tapetal pigment is present, its color dominates the color of a given animal's reflex. Tapetal color loosely follows coat color. For example, black coats and green reflexes tend to go together. Most dogs and cats show a blue reflex as their eyes mature in the first 6-8 months of life. Pigment-poor animals like blue point Siamese cats with no tapetal pigmentation show a red reflex for the same reason humans do."
    Hope this is useful/helpful/just interesting!
