Elgato Game Capture HD Footage takes Hours to Import

First off, I use a late 2009 21.5 inch iMac with an Intel 3.06 Ghz core 2 Duo, 12 Gigs Ram, and an Nvidia Geforce, 9400 265 mb with Mountain Lion . And all drivers up to date.
I've been having this issue for a while and with the increased work load I have been taking on, its now becoming unbearable. Every time I import Elgato Hd Footage (720p 60 FPS at high to even lowest quality) The import can take hours, Almost as long and often longer than the video even is. I thought it was a codec problem, but I have a friends footage I'm also editing that I have to convert and it gets converted to mp4 with a h264 codec as well. (Image being added below) And his imports just in a few short minutes. I have tried converting my footage as well but this does not seem to help and the only other file format I can do is MKV which adobe doesn't seem to take.
My friend footage is in the properties to the left, and Mine are on thee right. I understand there is a difference in file size and duration, but it doesn't seem like it should be making this big of a difference, where his imports in about 2 minutes when mine is in hours. This even happens if I open up the project after saving, it takes hours for it to simply load up the video. I have also tried this with videos in smaller sizes and the results seem scaled almost the same.
Please i could really use some advice on what to try out here, cause I'm out of ideas.

You're going to notice a huge difference going from what you have to 12gb, I don't know how big a difference you'll notice from 12 to 16. The reason Apple doesn't "support" 32gb in iMacs is that they write the specs at the time the machine is released taking into account the available technology at that time. Apple doesn't update it's specs for existing machines when new tecnology becomes available. If Crucial and OWC say 32 will work you'll have no trouble by using it. You won't go wrong with Crucial, I've used them foerver. Enjoy your new ram whatever you end up getting. Run Activity Monitor now and check out the page outs you're getting and run it again after you upgrade and you'll really get a visual of the difference.

I am recording my computer screen with an elgato game capture card.  When I play the unedited footage on my own computer, it is clear and crisp.  When I import the footage into premiere elements, it becomes blurry.  It becomes even blurrier when I save the edited video.  How do I keep the video clear?  How do I fix it?

    Thanks for the reply.
Please check out John T. Smith's information.
At this point, if you could tell us the file extension of the file involved, that would give us a start while you are
gathering the rest of the details.
You can easily get some information for us from Properties for your imported video that is blurry in the Editor.
    1. Click on Expert to get into the Expert workspace of Premiere Elements 13
    2. If you have not already, import your file into the program using Add Media/Files & Folder/Project Assets.
    3. Open Project Assets to see a thumbnail for the video that you just imported. Right click that thumbnail,
and select and click on Properties from the menu that opens.
    4. Tell us what is listed there is Properties - it should look something like this one which is specific for one of my wmv files.
Your information will be specific to the file that you right clicked in your Project Assets.
From what you have written so far, yours should show
    Image Size 1920 x 1080
Frame Rate either 59.94 or 60
Also, please go to Edit Menu/Project Settings/General, and tell us what you see for
    Editing Mode
    Timebase
    Frame Size
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
even if the fields look grayed out.
Your project settings may be contributing your Edit area previewing problems.
All of the above will keep us moving forward in the troubleshooting.

  • Elgato video capture versus digital 8 camcorder to import hi 8 movies

    Hi!
I have hi 8 video tapes which i want to import into my MacBook.
I would like to work on them with iMovie 09, cut them, set titles etc. put music on and so on.
Earlier I plugged my hi 8 camcorder into my panasonic DMR E85H dvd recorder with built in hdd.
Then i importet them via handbrake into my MacBook.
Then i importet them into iMovie 08 an did some cutting and so on.
Then i recognized, that there where horizontal interferences in the movie.
On the dvds the video is ok!
It doesn´t matter if i play the videos in Quicktime or in iTunes or iMovie.
If i would use a Elgato Video Capture to import or a digital 8 camcorder to import the videos to my MacBook would i be able to get a better result?
Which one should i prefer - i have to buy each of them!
Would the size of the camcorder-imported videos be bigger then with the Elgato device?
    Now i´m using iMovie 09.
Thanks a lot for helping me out!

Based on your comments about horizontal interferences, it may be that you are seeing interlace artifacts. The solution may be to deinterlace the clips.
You might try checking the settings in handbrake to deinterlace.
You might also take the clip you have produced in HB and deinterlacing using a free tool like MPEG Streamclip or JES Deinterlacer.
Your MPEG2 on DVD is already compressed from the original on tape. Then HandBrake decompresses and recompresses it to h.264. You generally want to cut out compression steps in your workflow whenever possible, because each generation of compression will introduce noise and loss.
You could also reimport from DVD using MPEG Streamclip (and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component). You could deinterlace at this step if needed.
You could certainly import through a camcorder with passthru capability. It will be DV which will be a very high data rate and potentially high quality, but it will never be higher quality than the underlying analog material. But you will have eliminated a compression step so you will be closer to the original.
ElGato products will certainly work as well. I use the ElGato EyeTV hybrid to capture from a VHS Deck, as well as to record high definition TV shows. My ElGato will capture to MPEG2, although the newer models may capture directly to MPEG4 (not sure). You would then use the ElGato software to export to iMovie in an editable format such as h.264 or Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • Why does it take hours to import mp4 files into iMovie

I have some home movies I imported from VHS-C and compressed to mp4 files and now I want to start going through them in iMovie but it takes hours just to import a single clip (~575 meg).
What can I do to speed this up? Would getting a Mac Pro with loads of RAM and CPU's help? Would converting to a different video format before I import work?
Right now I have all this video I converted to digital and thus far spent days just importing and haven't been able to do anything with it yet!
I'm using an iMac core duo with 2 gig RAM and the upgraded video card (best one they had at the time).
    Any help is appreciated!

This worked fine for me, was exactly what I wanted.
1 - Create the project in iMovie HD and then save and close.
2 - Locate the file on your computer. Ctrl-click on the file and it will say "show package contents". Click on that.
3 - You will then see some folder items inside that. Open up "Media" and then drag and drop your mpeg file into it.
4 - When you reopen the project, you will be notified that there are files in your trash. You want to view them to find the file you just moved there.
5 - Take that file and drag it back onto the project and you're in.
    A major blessing!

    Hello DopeMatt5-
Generally, most of our displays are provided by the manufacturer. From what I can see about this product online, it appears to be a Marketplace item, which means that we don't normally carry it in stores and it's only available through these third party sellers.
    I hope that this helps!

  • ITunes takes hours to import CDs and doesn't playback properly

I recently bought four CDs (all by the same artist) and only one of the four will import to iTunes.  The first CD imported in about five minutes, and there were no problems.
Despite iTunes still recognising the track titles and other info, the other three CDs took literally hours each to import just the first track, and when I tried to play them back, the music was practically inaudible because there was some kind of strange white noise over the top.
I have checked the discs and they're all clean, and none of them are pirated either, so I'm really confused as to what could be causing the problem. I couldn't see anybody else having this exact problem so I'm not entirely sure what to do about it! Any help would be really appreciated!

First of all - songs do go to the Music app for playing on the iPad - not iTunes. Look in the Music app. If it's not there - this may help ....
When you sync the iPad with iTunes - you have to select the music to sync within the Music Tab of iTunes. the Sync Music Heading must be checked and the albums, artists, playlists, etc must be selected as well in order to sync.
These kb articles should be of some help. It works the same way on the iPad.

  • Capturing HDV footage with incorrect timecode

Rookie mistake. I started shooting a new project on my brand new canon xh-a1s, and in the excitement I forgot to stripe my first few tapes. And it being a film project I've been constantly using the playback to look at the takes I just did. So what's happened is I don't have a nice clean 0;00;00 to 1;04;00 timecode on all the tapes, rather there are frequent spots on the tapes when it's started a new timecode at 0;00;00. So when I capture my footage into premiere pro cs3, it gets confused and either drastically unsyncs the audio or repeats the same 4 seconds of sound through the whole clip.
Oddly enough when you play the captured footage outside of premiere, in windows media player say, it looks and sounds fine. But premiere chokes on it everytime I import it or capture it.
Right now I've managed to capture successfuly going clip at a time with the capture now function, and staring at the timecode waiting to hit stop just when it gets to a new timecode. Sometimes I hit stop on time and it captures cleanly, sometimes I don't and it doesn't sync or skips the audio. But obviously trying to go through 8 hours of footage this way is an arguous, unreliable, and incredibly time consuming process. Logging clips doesn't work either because it never seems to stop the capture on time to save the clip.
Does anyone have any suggestions as how I can get the audio into premiere properly without doing what I'm doing now?

...or, always look at the timecode display in the viewfinder or the LCD before you press REC.  The nice display will ALWAYS indicate when you've reset the timecode. If the display is 00:00:00.00 or similar and you are NOT the very beginning of the tape, pressing record will start a new time code sequence everytime.
If you have END SEARCH, use it.  this will usually work as long as you haven't removed the tape.  Either way, rewinding the tape until a non-zero timecode appears and then pressing REC works.  The camera will increment the timecode from that value..
I'm not at my editting station, but I seem to remember that PPPro has a capture setting that will cause it to ignore timecode breaks--you then edit out the rough section at each break when editing.  Unless you're going to do something clever like recapturing HDV after capturing SD, you're not going to use the timecode anyway.
Then in the future, always look at the timecode display before you press REC.  There is really no reason to stripe if you always remember this.

  • Captured 24A footage wildly out of sync in FCP, but fine in QT

I just captured a bunch of 24A footage I shot on my Panasonic DVX100A and was dismayed to find that the clips were all wildly out of sync when I opened them in FCP--even though they are fine when I open the captured files directly in QT on my desktop. But when I play these same clips in FCP, the audio slips so steadily out of sync that on one 47 minute take, the video ended seven minutes before the audio, so the clip ends with seven minutes of sound against a black screen!
I actually found a workaround for this problem in a thread started by another poster with a similar sync problem. On that thread someone suggested that if I simply opened the underlying file as a QT movie on my desktop and then edited a second or two from the beginning, and saved it as a new Self Contained QT movie, I could import that one into FCP and it would have no sync issues. For reasons I still don't quite understand, that workaround solved the problem almost every time.
Until now, when not even that convoluted solution seems to help with this latest clip. Even after shaving the ends and saving it with a new name, the resultant QT file still imports into FCP with the same off sync problem.
Obviously, the best solution would be to figure out why clips are capturing with bad sync in the first place. For the record, I've shot and captured many, many hours of 24A footage from this camera in the past without experiencing any syn issues. As far as I can tell, the audio was shot and captured at 48.0 KHZ, just like always. (And the out of sync clip shows up as having 48.0 KHZ audio in the FCP browser.)
Since it was shot at 24A, I captured it using Advanced Pulldown removal as always. (Oddly, I notice in the browser info window that the clip shows up as 29.97 fps and not 23.98--if that's a clue to anyone.)
Thanks for your guidance on a sticky issue that has me stopped in my tracks.

    Hello GeeFor,
I was browsing for a different audio sync issue and came across your post. It caught my attention because I believe that I've ran into the same problem before and figured out what causes it, so I thought I'd share my experience.
You said that you've noticed that FCP initially recognizes the problem clips as 29.97, even though you've captured the 24PA footage with Advanced Pulldown. I've found that if, while you are capturing 24PA footage, you allow the capture to go beyond the recorded footage and into blank tape, that FCP recognizes the entire clip as 29.97. This causes audio sync problems, and if you end up trying to do a final export, will cause video problems as well.
I've successfully duplicated this problem and the solution is to make sure to stop your capture before your 24PA footage ends and blank tape begins. One way to avoid the problem is to record black to the entire tape while on the 24PA setting prior to filming. I normally just record an extra minute or two while on location at the end of the footage.
I think your work around in Quicktime works because you are effectively removing the break in timecode at the end of the clip, therefore FCP sees a start and end timecode that matches the 24PA settings.
I hope this fixes your issue, I'd be curious to know if it does. I did a lot of trial and error to figure out what my problem/solution was and I couldn't find anything in the forums that helped with my particular issue.

  • Exporting 48 minute film takes hours. Could you check my workflow?

    Greetings.
I have just finished editing a project and am trying to export a QT file to be used in IDVD or toast and am wondering if I am going about this in the right way.
First, a bit of background about my project, settings, and system. G5 1.8 4GB ram. External Lacie 1TB FW 800 drive connected to FW 800 port on G5. The Lacie is where my project file, media,, etc. are on. I have 700GB available space on that drive. My internal drive has 16GB space left, that has the OS, FC, apps, and so on.
My project was captured from a Canon HV30 via FW using AIC 1080/60. No weird files imported, everything rendered prior to export. The footage was shot HDV30P. The final length of the video is about 48 minutes.
I added four chapters markers, but none at begining or end as I've learned. I did add an "In" at very beginning of timeline and an "Out" at the very end of project. ( honestly, I'm not sure whether I even need to do this) I rendered everything before export.
I then went to File>Export QT and un-checked make self contain file. Clicked Ok and a few minutes later I had the file that has the FC logo on my desktop (internal drive)
Next I opened that file in QT, went to file>export settings were H.264, good quality, Automatic frame rate and clicked Save and directed QT to save that file on my 1TB Lacie. I did not alter the size, I left that at 1280x 720(?)
My first problem is the time it takes to export this thing.
My first attempt started yesterday at 4:30PM, I left it going all night and the export was still only about 1/3 the way done the next morning. That attempt was to try and save the export to my desktop (internal drive with only 16GB left on it). Thats when I figured maybe I needed more space for the export, so I'm doing the same thing above right now, but I am now exporting the .mov file to the Lacie 1TB drive. I see by the blue blinking front light on the Lacie that some activity is going on.
So I guess my first question does it normally take hours/days to export a HDV project to H.264, good quality for a 48 minute project?
My second question is my goal is to get the project onto DVD using IDVD. I'm assuming I start an IDVD project in widescreen so that my project is viewed on my rather old Sony 4:3 TV, it will appear letterboxed (black bars on top and bottom). This is what I would like.
Is my work flow good? Do I just need to be patient and make **** sure thatr project is exactly the way I want it before export?
Sorry for the LONG post, but I wanted tto give as much info as possible for you to access.

Ok, so you captured the HDV footage as AIC. Can you double check and report back the actual Item Properties for one of these captured clips ... select one in the browser and press Cmd-9 then post back with the settings listed there. Do likewise for you sequence.
Then you edited and exported a reference movie ... thats fine if you need to save disk space and you're not intending to use AIC as your edit master version, but still a self contained export would be more robust and further processing would generally be faster/more reliable than working with a self contained media file.
(A bit off the point, but I also note that you say that +the Lacie is where my project file, media, etc. are on"+ ... Danger, Will Robinson! Or at least, potentially so. Don't throw all your Easter Eggs in one basket. Make sure your project file is not stored in the same physical location as your Autosave Vault directory, else if the drive fails you'll have no means of recovering all your hard work.)
Next you opened that reference movie in QT Player and used it to create an H264 movie ... is that an intended target? Other than creating a SD DVD copy you don't note the intended audience / delivery for this piece. Creating an H264 version would not be a suggested part of the workflow for SD DVD delivery. You also note that you left the file size at its default, guessing that was 1280x720 ... can you double check that? As noted above already, 1280x720 denotes a HD 720 frame size, not an HD 1080 frame size. Unless you are doing this with specific intent then you'll probably want to leave it unscaled for your edit master.
Anyhoo, if you're looking for a good workflow for creating an SD DVD from an HD edit then you'll find a lot of good advice here:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hdv_timeline_to_sddvd.html
This one may be interesting t you also:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hdv_to_prores_with_chapter_markersstone.html
Both of the above are ProRes based workflows but should work equally well if you substitute AIC if thats your preference.
    Best
    Andy

  • Elgato Video Capture crashes.

Has anyone had any success with the Elgato Video Capture and the issue of conflicting USB ports? 3.0 vd 2.0.

If you use iMovie to do the digitizing (and you could use other apps, it's the iMovie Discussion Group, so I'm using that as an example) you open the Import from camera. The Video digitizing device you use will be considered a 'camera' in this context. When you capture video it will ask you 'where do you want to save this stuff'. At that point if you have already have the hard drive attached and have recognized it in iMovie and also gone to the View Menu > Group Events by Disk, then your external hd (whatever it is) will be recognized as a legitimate place to store Events AS THEY ARE DIGITIZED. This is a function of iMovie, not the Mac OS or the digitizing hardware you decide to purchase. So take what the Apple sales folks and Best Buy sales folks have told you and also consider they aren't using iMovie as regularly as participants in this Discussion Group.
Also know this, your Video Tape will playback from your VCR in Real Time (meaning 2 hours of tape material will take 2 hours to playback and subsequently 2 hours to digitize as it playsback). That is the limiting factor in ALL of this. You can digitize faster than the tapes will play back. So hard drive speed only comes into play when your moving stuff AROUND (internal <-> external). If you are digitizing straight to External HD you don't have to move anything at all. So maybe neither the hard drive nor the Mac processor speed will make any difference in this case. Save some more money, and buy more medium quality, medium speed hard drives as opposed to a Thunderbolt SSD?! Some more things to consider I guess.
