Eliminating duplicate images in my catalog

I have duplicate images in my Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 catalog that I want to eliminate.  When I check properties the image is identical except for the text format describing the image e.g.  img 001.jpg, IMG_001.jpg  and IMG_001.JPG.  I am looking for a way to get rid of duplicates without clicking on them individually and deleteing them. Also I want to prevent this happening again.  Any suggestions?

I don't know of any way to automatically eliminate duplicates -- all programs require manually deciding which photo is the duplicate and which is the one to keep.
Two programs I use are:
DupScout, which has a freeware version:

  • How to find, select and delete duplicate images fro LR catalog?

    I'm on a MacPro, Leopard, LR v1.4.1
How do you FIND duplicate files and remove them from the catalog?
I had 12 images outside of a subfolder on a job. When I did a "synchronize folder" action it added those same 12 files to the catalog. I then physically moved the files into the correct folder - replacing the ones of the same name inside. Now I have 2 images of the same name in the catalog. I know I an choose them one at a time & Remove, but I can see this happening on a larger scale where I would want to Find All Dupes, then remove them.
Same thing would happen if you imported from a folder or card that hadn't be formatted & forgot to check the "don't import suspected dupes" box.
    thanks!

"I then physically moved the files into the correct folder"
Precisely how? You didn't use Explorer/Finder, did you? Once images are in Lightroom, use Lightroom for moving files between folders. The best way to remove duplicates is to avoid having them in the first place.
To get rid of existing ones, one way is to select those folders and save the XMP (Metadata > Save....) and then remove those folders from LR. Then import them again. Alternatively sort them by capture time and go through eyeballing them - use the reject flag to identify duplicates and then the delete rejects command.

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Why did the # of images in my catalog double when I 'Moved' them in LR from one ext. drive to a 2nd?

    Hi,
I'm running LR 3.4 64bit on a PC. My external drive starting generating error messages so I went out a purchased a 2nd external drive (3TB Seagate)  to migrate my image Catalog over.  Within LR's Import dialog screen I selected the Source drive (old; error-generating drive) and the Destination as my new drive. I ensured that Move was selected (vs. Copy or New).
I had on the order of 50k images. This morning I checked my catalog and the files appear to have moved over just fine. However, now the image count is >100k!
Any ideas on 1) what I did wrong, 2) what steps I can take to 'de-duplicate' the images in my catalog without manually going through?
    Thanks in advance!
    Machaba

I notice it that users often use the Import feature in LR incorrectly. That creates a lot of problems.
The Import feature is for images that are NOT yet in LR. Only when - for some reasons - you want the same images twice in LR you use the Import and un-check the "Do not import suspected duplicates".
In your case you must have un-checked the "Do not import suspected duplicates" -box in the Import dialog.
As the previous poster already noted the best way to move whole folders or even drives of images is to move them in your OS.
In LR you then get a question mark besides the folder where the photos previously were.
Just right-click the folder with the question mark and point LR to the new location - that's all.
But you imported and now all images show twice.
If your images are all on the new HD (check if they are all there!), right-click the top-most image folder on your "old" HD and select "Remove". This will remove the folder from LR but will not delete your images. LR should then show only 1 set of images on your new HD.

  • How can I view then rotate or crop duplicate images

My wife has a large photo collection (50,000+ images) and has created a copy of a hundred or so pictures to include in a video I'm working on.
The problem is that I can't get Elements Organizer to display these images because they are "duplicate images".
I had to switch to "Display | Folder Location" mode to even find the directory.  When I did I noticed the 10 subdirectories had not been imported, so I tried to import them and got this error:
Nothing was imported.  The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types, or the files are already in this Catalog.
I realize that they are duplicates but I WANT to see them so that I can edit them (crop, rotate, etc).
    (Q) Is there a way to get Elements to "jump" me to the  original photo so that I can rotate or crop the "original".  NOTE: I  would use the Version Set feature or save my edits as a "new image"  altogether.  I think if this worked, I could create an "Album" that has the "duplicate" photo's my wife  has given to me and achieve what I need to do.
I'm brand new to Elements (previously I used ACDSee and it could do this without any hassle).  I've heard and read that Elements 9's Organizer is much improved so I wanted to give it a try.
    (Q) Does Elements have a simple checkbox to allow me to work with duplicate images?
    (Q) Is the solution to create another catalog?    I've done this to work around this problem (for now).
    Also
    (Q) Does Elements 9, have a way to show all of the images in all of the folders underneath a given folder?  I found that if I have a directory that contains 10 sub-directories, when I'm in the top-level directory no images are shown.  In ACDSee, it would show me all of the images under a given directory including all of the sub-directories.  Is this possible to do in Adobe Elements 9?
    Thanks for any help.

The organizer is not a browser, it is a database : even if it can show photos in your folders structure, it only works on the files wich have been 'imported' and registered in the catalog. It can show your registered pictures displayed according to the real folder structure based on the paths registered with each present file, but you'll have problems if some upper level folder is empty.
On the other hand, the items registered in a catalogue can't be duplicates, and the Organizer prevents duplicates to be registered. There is no simple one click way to override this constraint, which would mean a different database 'key', that is to rename the duplicates you want to register.
Practical way : since you have to rename the duplicates before importing them, you could do this directly in Windows or any other freeware like Faststone photoresizer.
Or you could open those pictures directly from the editor, browsing in your folder structure.
Imagine you have duplicates in a folder and want to rename them and import them using only PSE :
    - From the editor, use the 'process multiple files' to export the files from this folder and rename them, for instance 'IMG_0012.jpg' + 'dupl' stating the same destination folder
    - Try again to 'get files and videos' from the organizer.

  • How to identify duplicate images?

After recently upgrading to PSE5 I've noticed that my catalog contains various duplicate images. On closer inspection these are identical images (same file name) stored in different directories, so I'm happy that PSE is working correctly.
Can anyone suggest a method to identify these duplicate images, which will then help me to delete them?

Along the same line as Colin: If you look on Google for "finding duplicate photos" there are lots of software products, both free and shareware, which claim to find duplicates on a PC. I have not used any particular one, so I can not recommend any particular one.
You could find the duplicates, remove one set, open Organizer and do a Reconnect All Missing and then Remove From Organizer. This would clean up the Organizer. The hiccup would be if you had Photo 1 and SamePhoto 1 in Organizer with SamePhoto 1 tagged. When you delete the file and remove the missing link, you lose the tag and you would have to re-tag Photo 1.
Is there any pattern that all the duplicates are in the same folder (would be easy to remove the one folder) or do they seem to be scattered about?

  • Merging duplicate PC and Mac catalogs

I have a duplicate PC-based LR catalog alongside the same on my Mac, about 50k DNG's).  I did most of my labelling, sorting, and development on the Mac, but now work mainly on the PC.  Can I move over the rating, labeling and batching I've done on the Mac to the PC?   Merging instructions usally refer to new images and leave me with screens of blank frames and disassociated (?) previews.        erich

You need to "merge" the two sets of music files into your Mac's iTunes library. Once you do that, you're right, you can use the Restore button to erase and initialize the iPod. That will re-format the iPod to Mac format. Then simply sync the iPod to your iTunes library.

  • I'd like to copy and paste a few Gigs worth of photos residing in iPhoto (ver. 5?) to a flash card - is there a simple way to do this w/o the issue of "duplicate" image numbers (when they are in fact unique images, but the translation is lost)... thx

Tried doing this a few yrs ago and it was maddening, the receiving flashcard (or desktop) kept flagging duplicate image numbers and my only choice to was to delete one or replace, when - because they are unique images - I wanted all of them to be saved on disk (is there a way to auto rename to prevent this)??? Thx.

Just tried to export photos and kept getting messages that a certain photo was corrupt or some such thing and then it stopped and did not continue with export. Frustrating as I spent hours moving ~1200 photos into 2 folders on desktop.  Tried doing a few at a time and one always stopped the entire export. Is there a way around this?  I.e., program so it exports photos that work, does not export those that are damaged?  Would be nice to know before the fact (in moving to folder) that photos have issues.  Thanks for any help - again!

  • How do i find and delete duplicate images in Photos? Help please!!

With all the image sharing me and other half do my Photos library is FULL of duplicate images.. I need a quick and easy way to find and delete them. I've tried a couple of the free apps in the app store, but because the Photos library isn't a regular folder, they won't work! My library is way to
big to manually scan through too.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

    Hi Keith,
Thanks for the advice! However, it's not possible find the really large files this way since file size is not a smart album option. There are too many movies to find them manually.
    Best regards,
    Anders

  • PS Elements Version Sets = Duplicate Images in Revel

I am using Elements 12 and Revel. I have a very large library with many version sets containing my master RAW file and an edited JPG copy. Prior to Revel acepting RAW files, I had no problem. Only my JPEGs were uploaded. Now however, I am seeing hundreds of duplicate photo images in my library, ie both the master RAW and my JPEG of the exact same image. While I love the fact that Revel can accept RAW images I am now frustrated over the fact that I have to scroll through so many duplicate images when viewing my photos on my iPad. Is there any way to hide images in Revel? Any suggestions as to how I can fix this (prevent Revel from uploading both the RAW and JPEG images in a version set) or having an option to hide either the RAW or JPEG image after Revel uploads them?
    Mark

PS Elements creates and uploads the JPEG versions for RAW files. As a workaround for this problem, you can create an album under library  in PS Elements and add all the RAW files to this album. This way all the JPEG versions of RAW files would be present in an album and this change would be propagated to iPad as well. So it would help in filtering out duplicate JPEG versions in your library.

I would suggest you visit an Apple dealer, preferably an Apple Store if there's one in your city, and ask for assistance in determining what you need. The questions and issues you bring up are rather complex to address in a technical support forum and would be better addressed in person where you and the salesperson can ask questions back and forth to arrive at the optimal setup.

  • Duplicate Image object in PDF file with low resolution

    Hi all,
On creating images in bitmap mode using illustrator into eps format and convert the eps file into pdf using acrobat distiller.
On pdf file its showing two objects in the content panel with one object present in low resolution other one same as its original.
It will not happen in direct pdf from illustrator
    Please anyone help on this.
Note: It will not happen in grayscale mode.

Hard to follow what you are experiencing, can you post  screenshots?
You may want to experimnent with your .eps settings, especially preview & inlcude linked files since you have duplicate images.

  • How do you weed through duplicate images?

I love that Aperture allows tasks to be done many different ways. I'd like to hear some ideas on how to do this -
I am going through and finally getting my old photos from 2002 to current managed in Aperture. Many of the images are a mess on CD backup and more recent images are from the pc (I could get these from an EHD or in iPhoto). Long story short, I have LOTS of duplicate images from one disk to another. I mean the same photo two or three times.
My library has a top blue folder for the year. The projects within there are almost all by month year (i.e. Apr 2003). As far as I can tell, all of these images are the same - but one project might have an image that another one doesn't have. Should I worry about this or not? I am very detail oriented and anal about it - so set me straight if I need a slap into reality
Should I just go through my library and view by date and delete the duplicates without regard to which CD they came from? What would you do? How do you weed through duplicate images in this regard?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I almost thought you hit a winner there... even for general use. I started to read it and realized the import window cannot be resized. Why did I think that? Well, in general, have you ever imported from your camera and then took more pictures? Do you always remember what the last downloaded image was? Wouldn't it be great to resize that import window and see the actual library underneath to check??!
Anyway, my imports are done so .... last night I did a few months worth and I was in date view within 2003 (not the smart folder at the top under Library) and went through using the 9 key to reject the images that were duplicate. Some of them I could go to the project and reject in larger groups, but mostly it was one by one. It is a painstaking process, but ensures I have every image. Once I know I have it all, I will delete the rejects.
Keep in mind - my duplicates are not in the same project - they exist in multiple projects, sometimes two or three.
No other tips out there? I was sure there were enough power users that would have some secret tip to make life easier with Aperture.

  • How do I find duplicate images in Aperture?

How do I find duplicate images in Aperture AFTER importing my entire library from iPhoto? There must be a way to do that, right?
Please let me know the secret.
    Thanks!

Léonie,  Thank you for your rapid reply!
I am using Aperture Version 3.4.3 and 9.4.2.  I downloaded the Duplicate Annihilator but it gives me an error message that says this:
I have no idea what that is all about since I am using this library in iPhoto and Aperture. I already sent the company an email asking about the problem.
I am seeing dupes that came from my original photos in iPhoto and from iPhoto PhotoStreams with monthly dates; these are listed in my Apertrure Projects listing. Is there a way to SAFELY dump these dupes?
    Thanks!

  • 'Do not import duplicate images' does not work

For some weird and frustrating reason, the 'Do not import duplicates' checkmark doesnt seem to be functioning. Over the past few weeks, I have ended up importing duplicate and triplicate copies of images even though the checkmark on 'Do not import duplicate images' is checked. I dont know why this is happening.
My import settings are customized, but then this was done long before i started facing this problem.
I usually dont delete images till my card is full, and this results in duplicates before everytime I import images from a new shoot, images from the previous shoot also get imported, unless I manually deselect them.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

    Leonie,
Yes I rename my files while importing. But I have been doing that for a while now, didnt face this issue earlier. Not sure what you mean by 'Signature'?.
I upgraded to ML a few days ago, so my sys config is MacOS 10.8 & Aperture is 3.3.2 (I've been facing this issue even before i upgraded to ML, so I dont think its related to ML).
I always import directly from my camera (i.e. card) and this issue seems to have cropped up somewhere after the release of Aperture 3.3.
Also, I have sent f/b to Apple on this issue (n vow, they seem to be collecting customer profile data thru this f/b. Look at the number of irrelevant questions they have).
    cheers, Bhaven
