Elitebook 8560p main board failure

Apparently this is a common problem with the main board failing - I bought 2 at the same time for my office and one went out just before warranty ran out.  I'm told only refurbished boards are available and that it may be better to put the money into a new laptop/notebook.  Any useful info would be appreciated.  I still like this notebook even with this apparent inherent problem.  Bought in September 2011 so was hoping to get another 2 years.....

Hi Patricia_s,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums.
Here is a link to the manual page 49 for the system board. You could just google the part number or HP Parts Surfer.

  • MBP 13" unibody main-board failure after 1 year and 10 month. Apple does not care!!!

    Hi Apple Communites!
I have a big problem with my MacbookPro. I bought my MacbookPro in december 2010 in Thailand. 5 days ago My MacbookPro suddenly switched off and never start again.
So I sent it to Apple Dealer in Phuket, Thailand to check. Now they told me it is the main-board failure and i have to change it on my own cost.
And it is 26000 Thai baht (870 US Dollars). How comes that Apple do not take care for my cost.
My MacbookPro is not two years old. For this price i better buy a new PC notebook.
Can some of you please help me for a solution or answer? I use Apple almost 10 years and never have problem like this. Or Apple do not taking care of their customers or quality products anymore?  lertlid trzop

you are right!! but is this the quality product of Apple that lasts for just 1year and 10 months?
If it so then i think about to go back to PC after 10 years using Apple products and no one from Apple cares about customer service and quality.
Sad Story about Apple. What Steve Jobs and Tim Cook gonna think about this.

  • [EliteBook 8570w] General System Board Failure

While trying out a new Linux distro (probably unrelated), I've found my EliteBook 8570w unbootable. When I turn on the computer both the num lock and caps lock lights blink 5 times (General system board failure) while seeing the HP boot logo.
I tried restoring a working BIOS, however I've formatted all drives before which means there's not HP_TOOLS or HP_RECOVERY partitions. I tried restoring the BIOS through a flash drive but with no results: the light of the USB drive flashes for about a half second, the caps lock light starts flashing, the fan goes full throttle and then nothing happens; the computer can only be turned off by unplugging AC.
After trying several configurations of the flash drive (UEFI restore, BIOS update, custom stuff...) with the same result, I'm not sure what to do next.
Is there any other viable options to try (e.g. would flashing BIOS work with a HP_TOOLS partition on the HDD)? Is my motherboard just plain dead?
    Thanks in advance.

  • DesignJet 1050C Delta power supply board failure (DPS-386AP)

Our geek club was given a 1050C designjet plotter which we would like to repair to put in service.
It appears that the standby/sense power (-15vdc) is leaving the psu board to the main board, and the power switch is grounding out to trigger the Delta power supply board to come on.
However, there is no DC voltage from the Delta PSU board. All lines are dead.
I tried bringing it up with the main cable disconnected from the motherboard, checking to see if something was loading down / shorting the power supply, but it still does not come up.
I'm starting to go through the process of figuring out what failed, but was hoping that maybe there is a common problem that I can look for.
Caps look like they are from reputable vendors, and none of them are swollen nor is electrolyte coming out of any of them.
Anyone have any knowledge of failures on this board?

This forum is focused on consumer level products.  For the Designjet you may have better results posting in the HP Designjet forum here.

  • Elitebook 8560p Fingerprint Sensor Headaches

    Hello all,
I am a new forum user and new owner of an HP Elitebook 8560p notebook. I purchased the laptop second-hand from a shop near my house. I had to clean the dust out of the inside and repaste the processor, oil the fan as well, but now my machine is working great. I have the core i5 model.
    Here is my issue:
Bringing the notebook home, I powered it up and during the boot process there were weird checksum validations and things did not go fluidly, but it did boot into Windows 7. The weirdness (specifics not important) led me to believe that the notebook was running an illegally obtained copy of Windows. I proceeded to attempt to 'Restore Factory Defaults', which did not work (various errors, I believe the Recovery partition to be corrupted), and so I clean installed my own legit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
Installation smooth, had already downloaded the Broadcom Wifi driver and installed it via USB. Installed all other drivers successfully, updated the bios, etc. Everything works great, except that in the device manager, there is still an 'Unknown Device'. Okay, no problem.. I right click, go into driver details and attempt to ascertain the Hardware ID (the typical way to find unknown drivers), and under the Hardware Ids tab it also says 'Unknown Device'.
After thinking about it, I realized there was no biometrics tab in the device manager and no way to run the fingerprint sensor (one of the most exciting features of this laptop for me). Now, I know this sounds cliche, but I've tried... everything.
Tried a hard reset, discharging all of the flea power and restoring BIOS defaults. Nothing. I tried a BIOS rollback and then a Scan for new hardware in device manager. Nothing. I have installed and uninstalled SO MANY versions of the Validity driver, to no avail. Have installed HP ProtectTools and uninstalled multiple times with no success. I've tried so many combinations of installs, restarts, uninstalls, device manager scans, etc. Lots of websites, and threads on this forum, have different fixes and procedures that have worked for others with this or similar Elitebook/probook models...none of them work for me.
I thought I was getting closer earlier when I read somewhere that the hardware recognition is dependent on certain windows services being enabled (Cred Manager, RPC, Windows Biometrics), so I enabled them and set them to startup automatically. Next, I enabled all Biometrics related Group Policies. Restarted, uninstalled the 'Unknown Device', reinstalled Validity drivers, tried several scans for hardware, all kinds of stuff. Nothing. Nothing at all. Still no Biometrics tab, just an unknown USB device, and I'm ready to punch myself unconscious.
Am I missing something? Did one of the Windows Updates (there were like 170 to install when I clean installed Ultimate 64 bit) ruin my fingerprint sensor's functionality? How do I get this to work?
Killing me. Can't use one of the coolest components of my machine, and every time I wake from sleep or boot up from cold I get the unknown device popup constantly reminding me of my failure.
Typically, with any tech issue I just google and google until I can get it done myself. I've never joined a forum to ask questions or inquire for help before in my life, but this...... this has me stumped. Any advice/suggestions/known fixes appreciated. MODS- if this is in the wrong forum I apologize, and feel free to move it to the appropriate subforum.
    Thanks in advance!
EDIT: This notebook is 1 year out of warranty, so suggesting HP support is useless.

  • 2011 Macbook Air - Multiple logic board failures - possible causes?

I have a 2011 i7 macbook air - 7 months old.  About a month ago I went to use the computer after allowing it to sleep and it was totally dead.  Apple authorized repair center said the logic board failed and needed to be replaced.  Fast forward a month and I finally get the machine back.  It works fine for 6 hours, I put it to sleep, and soon as the screen went out, I hear a pop, fizzle, then the machine is dead again.  The authorized repair center wants to replace the logic board again, which should get me up and running, but its not likley that that is the root CAUSE of the problem here, since it happened twice now.  I suggested to them that perhaps the power adaptor, battery, or some other component is the issue and they don't think so.  I'm located overseas, and every repair attempt takes 1 month b/c of parts (total joke if you're listening apple!!).  My biggest concern is that they replace the logic board again, I'm out of commission for 2 months now, and it just fails again.  Does anyone have any suggestions on the possible causes of this problem?
As FYI - I'm using the same power outlet and power strip with another laptop and haven't had any similar issues.  Thanks for the help!

I have logic board problems too. I have had a late 2010 mac book air for 2 and half years. Its been a great machine in general - although it did go back within the warranty period for the track pad
Now it has logic board failure - symptons are the sound going and  the battery is dead and it is unable to charge which means every time you put the power lead on the computer thinks it is starting from scratche.
I have been quoted over £400 for the repair!  Like the above post I do not believe that this part should fail - and if it does then it is a major design problem and Apple should be doing something for us. I just dont know where to start.
I have used macs for 14 years and owned eight along the way. Most have them have lasted many years with full functionality  the record was my G3 imac which was still working after 13 years.
I really cant believe the situation I am in and rather think I have bought my last mac!

  • Hard drive and logic board failure

    Hi everyone,
we have been suffering from 4 dead hard drives and one logic board failure in 20-inch intel iMacs (~2007) recently and last month the logic board and hard drive of a 2010 27-inch iMac (just out of warranty) just died.
Are there any known issues with the iMacs that Apple fixes even outside the warranty?

Frank:  I have a 5 month old 27" iMac and the logic board on it just died as well as I was getting all kinds of kerner errors.  I have Apple Care and although the cost to replace the product was $800 I am not going to have to pay anything.  I did talk to someone else who also had a logic board go bad on him but I doubt that you will be able to get it fixed without having to fork over $$$

  • Macbook Air, Logic board failure, what happens to data?

    Hello,
My Macbook Air died today with 90% battery and will no longer turn on. SMC and PRAM reset did nothing, it's completely unresponsive. I think it's a logic board failure. I have a question regarding a repair with Apple; I realise they will replace the logic board inside my computer with a new (or refurbished) board and the faulty one will be shipped to Apple. Considering the Macbook Air has flash memory on the board will this mean my data is now unrecoverable? I have everything backed up, I'm not worried. I have some err personal photo's of me and my partner in iPhoto and I'm wondering what will happen to the sensitive data.
Thanks for dealing with this lets say awkawrd topic

I don't think that your flash memory files are unrecoverable. That's because the logic board of the MacBook Air hasn't got the flash memory soldered. However, I don't know if Apple will replace the logic board, "recycling" your flash memory, or if they will install a whole new logic board replacing the flash memory, although the first option makes more sense and it would be the normal option.
Anyway, as you have a backup on an external drive, you don't have to worry about that

  • After replacing main board how to install OS X

    Hi guys,
I had lots of problem with my late 2011 macbookpro, after Apple's main board replacement program, I gave my computer to the service( not apple store, because I don't have one in my city). Now they changed my without any payment but they didn't install any OS X in to my computer and they want to charge money for installinng OS X. Is it normal? (My first question)
I am trying to install OS Xit but I couldn't manage ( when I gave to my computer to the service I have mavericks by the way.) Now When I enter Os x utilities menu and press reinstall Os x. Os x mavericks screen is appeared. I am connecting wifi and entering my apple id but it says 'This item is temporary unavailable . Try again later'
Can you help me what can be problem?? How can I install OS X my own?

My opinion is that you should have had an OSX installed as part of the replacement process.  But my opinion counts for little.
Try this:  Boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys down.
If successful, you should see a revolving globe.  By following the directions, you will be connected to the Apple servers and should be able to install the original OSX that came with your MBP (Lion was the OSX for late 2011 MBPs).
You will need a solid Internet connection.
    Ciao.

  • I need to get photos off a water damaged iPhone 3GS. Can I take out the component that has the photos (is this the main board?) and put it into another of the same phone to retrieve the photos? Please help

I need to get photos off a water damaged iPhone 3GS. It spent time underwater, saltwater. I let it dry for a week, turned it on, the apple symbol came on, then it died. I need to retrieve my photos off it. Can I take out the component that has the photos (is this the main board?) and put it into another of the same phone to retrieve the photos? Please help

You're talking about the logic board. The two most likely things to get toasted, with water damage, are the battery(it shorts out), & the logic board. The worst water damage would be salt water. I'm afraid your logic board is toast.

  • Logic board failure - the 6th

my ibook is a little over 2 years old and i just had my 6th logic board failure last night. i knew it was going to happen after 5 previous failures... and it will certainly happen again.
even though its rare, i've heard of people getting their ibooks replaced. i know its not apple's policy with this issue (and wasn't the 5th time it happened), and i don't have applecare, but i'm wondering if i'm just screwed here.
i plan to call customer service and tell them that i know sending it in again for the LB repair extension program will just lead to another failure. there is no reason for me not to completely assume this... that my computer simply does not have the reliability needed for me to pursue my class projects. last night i lost my homework and it will not be turned in on time today.
i'm just asking for advice, based on other peoples experience, and given my situation, should i pursue a replacement or just reluctantly purchase a new computer?
    ibook - dual USB

How long will Apple keep covering these logic board repairs?
Is it indefinitely, or only for 3 years?
... because mine is in for its 3rd repair and it will be 3 years old in another 6 months - and I suspect it will only break again.
I was told by the Apple rep [from the division that would cover replacement] that they have only replaced iBooks for people who had the extended warranty.
So I offered to pay to he $200 that an extended warranty would have cost.
The rep argued that the other people's units had the extended waranty in place when their units broke.
So I explained that mine broke TWIICE within it's intial 1 year warranty - and asked why that isn't the same condition as he just asserted was requisite - at which point he diverted the subject of the conversation so as to not answer - I assume because my point was well made and he couldn't provide a reasonable answer.
If it were only that I have to repeastedly send it back for repair [assuming it will continue to be covered] but backing up and wiping the drive of private info and restoring it takes hours.
In my opinion the thing breaks because it's put under some stress when grabbing the case, and the case flexes. The reason I think that is so is because the symptoms can be made to happen or not [when they initially start] by flexing the left side of the case.
The situation leaves me thinking there is an argument that the product failed its original warranty of merchantability. So I'm wondering if I should just go to small claims near a apple facility.
When I even questioned whether a legal issue existed the apple rep threatened to terminate my call and hand me over to legal.
How can he do terminate my call if there is a program that promises to cover the repair? That made me feel even more that I need to seek other recourse now and not wait until it happens again.

  • Fan behaviour of EliteBook 8560p when plugged in and when on battery

    Hi,
I am wondering why the fan (permanent activity disabled in BIOS) of my EliteBook 8560p is more active when it runs on AC power as it is active when it is on battery power  (especially when the notebook is in the docking station, the notebook lid is closed and I use an external monitor)? I would assume that the power consumption would be less...
Is there any way to change the fan behaviour in that sense?
Well, it is fine, that I can deactivate permanent activity of the fan via BIOS, but when it is possible that it is not needed on battery power why not the same for AC power - especially when the power consumption is less...?
    Schlumpf

Hi Huffer, thank you for the quick response.
O.k., the fan consumes quite a lot of power. On the other hand, why using it when it is not really needed (as shown when on battery)?
However, I found under "Power Options > Advanced Settings > Processor power management" some interesting settings.
Well, there also should be settings about "Core Parking", "Allow Throttle States" etc... but it seems that they are hidden. On one website I found tweaks for listing such settings in the BIOS...
    http://www.ryanstevens.co.uk/2011/03/18/tutorial-speed-windows-pc/
    It relates to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg566941.aspx
"Copy its GUID from the document – ‘Allow throttle states’ is ‘ 3b04d4fd-1cc7-4f23-ab1c-d1337819c4bb ‘, for instance – and build a command along the lines of powercfg -attributes SUB_ PROCESSOR 3b04d4fd-1cc7-4f23-ab1c-d1337819c4bb-ATTRIB_HIDE ."
I think that the cpu throttling is enabled only while on battery, isn't it?
Or is it possible to control this "Enhanced Intel SpeedStep® Technology" via the "Minimum/maximum processor state" settings?

  • IMac DV SE 2000 - Screen malfunction, probably analog board failure.

After almost a decade of trouble-free operation, my iMac DV SE is manifesting issues of analog board failure. I can now only start it up properly once in a few tries. By this, I mean that the machine itself starts up, but the screen fails to turn on. What I have noticed is that when the screen does not turn on, the machine does not make the "electrical discharge" sound that all CRT computer monitors make when you turn them on. On the occasion that the screen does turn on, the sound is audible. I am not sure (not being an engineer) whether this is a noise from capacitor discharge or what, but I suspect that some component is failing inside. If that is the case, any recommendations other than "check eBay" as to where to find parts, and what part is most likely responsible?

I'm no fan of eBay either. This outfit is in Eugene Oregon, and one of their techs is a frequent contributor to these hallow halls:
    http://www.synaptech.com/catalog/index.php?mainpage=index&cPath=16_18
PAV boards are not cheap. No one is making new ones and, as the older G3's eat their origianl boards, the supply of workable used boards declines.
Our 400 DV is also suffering. Ours tend to do thermal shutdowns after a few minutes of running.
