Elitebook 8570w hot to the touch, can't find fan data

Hi, I am having issues with a HP Elitebook 8570w and its functioning. When using a lot of the cpu the heat builds up to the point that it can get slightly painful to the touch on the left side. This includes the left most keys of the keyboard. The fan itself is nearly silent and there is barely any airflow through the exhaust. The laptop itself is inclinded and the fan doesn't look blocked when inspected through the service latch.
So I am trying to diagnose the situation. However I have not been able to find any way of monitoring the fan speeds and utilisation. (SpeedFan and its ilk appear to be unable to find a fan) Do I need to go into the bios for this? As I'd rather not send it in just for a software issue.  But with temperatures around 90-120 degrees celcius I'd really like to do something about this.

Hello Riverlim,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure, I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums, since this is a commercial product. You can click here for the link.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

The laptop itself is inclinded and the fan doesn't look blocked when inspected through the service latch. The only physical block I can imagine is with the side exhaust but I can't examine that without taking apart the entire thing. So I am trying to diagnose the situation. MY suggestion would be to send the unit for service if it is under warranty and get it fixed. If the unit is not under warranty then please check the vents and clean it since i belive it should be blocked . I am a HP Employee. If you have all your music on the cmputer then i would connect up my phone uncheck the Sync Music option and apply.
This should take all the music off your phone .Then you can resync the music back on to it.
If this doesn't work maybe a restore to factory settings and start from scratch is the way to go

  • Why is the new iMac so hot to the touch????

Was just at Best Buy checking out the new 27" iMac pentium i5's. Why are they so darn hot to the touch? Is this normal? How can that be a good thing?
I need to know because this is the only thing preventing me from purchasing one.
    Thanks.

    Hi.
If the heat you notice on one machine at Best Buy is the "only" thing preventing you from purchasing, then my best suggestion to you is to let it go.
You know that every computer produces heat. Some dissipate it better than others... some just differently.
Some create more heat than others because the processors demand more energy to perform their intensive tasks properly. The 27" iMac is such a machine. Not only is it required to do all the things any other iMac might do, it's designed to do it faster AND to while driving a big, beautiful 27" display.  Any processor that can do that is gonna get hot.
Relax.  If you like the machine and what it offers, and if you can afford it, buy it.  You know Apple will stand behind it for a year... and if you want the added comfort of 2 extra years of support, you can drop the $ for AppleCare.
Are you happy with the iMac you have?  The new one was designed by the same great team of engineers.

  • Why is the phone so hot to the touch?

I had to reactivate my Iphone 4 yesterday.  Now whether I am charging it or not it seems hot to the touch.  That didn't happen before I took it in.  Any ideas?

You are probably going to have to take a trip to the Apple Store, but you can also make sure that:
Bluetooth is turned off when not in use
Location Services are only turned on for those locations that you want a constant update to
Background App Refresh is turned off
    Automatic Downloads is turned off
Cellular Roaming is turned off when you don't need it
Go through your Settings and take a look at all of the settings to determine if you have any turned on that may be using a lot of battery, and which you really don't need.

  • While playing games computer feels somewhat hot to the touch is it going to burn out?

Hi while playing games I feel like my macbook is going to burn out because the bottom feels somewhat hot to the touch from playing games for about 15 minutes I don't want my computer to get ruined from this unless it can't but is there any way to keep it cool, It's brand new 8 gb of ram and 2.9 ghz processor

You could use a cooling pad - with or without fans. But it's normal for MacBook Pros to heat up when playing games. Your fans should rev up as your MBP heats up. If it gets too hot, you'll experience a thermal shutdown before anything can be ruined - but I doubt that you're even close to that!

  • My phone becomes hot to the touch

My phone becomes hot to the touch-front & back and usually complete battery drain ensues.  Is this a fixable problem or do I need a whole new device?

Take it to the Apple store genius bar and have the techs test if for you...they can tell if it needs to be replaced.

  • Why does my iphone become hot to the touch?

iPhone 4 will occasionally become hot to the touch. This seems to happen randomly, without any rhyme or reason, or warning.

    Hello dhartz61,
When troubleshooting temperature, please refer to the following article:
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (4th generation): Keeping device within acceptable operating temperatures
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2101
When using the device or charging the battery, it is normal for it to get warm. The exterior of the device functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the device to the cooler air outside.
By all means, if you believe the temperature is a concern, you can isolate the issue by restoring your iPhone as new:

  • Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro power brick extremely hot to the touch!  This affected my computer (It was hot as well) - I could smell something burning!  I am unsure the issue!

    Hello,
I purchase the latest 2013 Retina Macbook Pro, which I pluged in my charger and walked away from my computer!  When I arrived, my computer was in sleep mode and I noticed a faint burning smell and felt my computer and it was extremely HOT!  I then felt the power brick and it was even hotter!  10 minutes after I awoke the computer (ESTIMATED), the computer actually cooled down...  It's not hot to the touch but still warm!  On the other hand, the power brick is still extremely HOT!
Please help!  I started the charge at 3% and awoke it around 78% and now it's at 89%
Also, how long does it take to charge from 3% to 100%?  It's been about 2 hours to reach 89%
    Thanks,
    Anthony
NOTE:  Any support would be great!  I could use the advice as this is personally my first MAC!  I am thinking a software update to fix the computer from heating up when sleeping but I am unsure about the power brick!

    AppleSupportNow
I always thought that keeping it plugged in nearly 24/7 can damage the battery too?
No, not at all, the only damage from being plugged in all the time are IF:
A: its not turned off and in sleep mode ALL the time while plugged in
B: you dont unplug it ever couple weeks or so and drain the battery down to about 30 to 40%
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
but really all you would keep in mind is --"consider 15-20% is the same as 0% and recharge it"
Important useful info on your Lithium cells as compiled from battery experts:
Heat increases battery performance but shortens life by a factor of two for every 10°C increase above 25–30°C (18°F above 77–86°F). This is yet another important reason for the cooling of any notebook, not just keeping the processor and GPU cool. Mavericks lower power tasking (app nap) and combined with the cool running Haswell processor both greatly protect battery life on your Macbook now more than ever before.
Good news: *Mavericks not only increases a single charge cycle for longer battery use off a full charge,… but also prolongs the overall long term life of the LiPo battery in a Macbook by reducing the load conditions the battery experiences from heavy peak-use.
Counting cycles is not conclusive because a discharge may vary in depth and there are no clearly defined standards of what constitutes a charge cycle on a Lithium Ion battery empirically. Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count.
The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine.
Frequent HIGH depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
Although better performing when warm, lithium polymer batteries live longer when kept cool.
Lithium cells prefer draining conditions at a steady pace rather than fast pulsed or quick discharges, …this fact is idealized now with the Haswell and Mavericks app-nap low power tasking for battery use.

  • IPhone 5c gets hot to the touch

Why is my iPhone 5c getting hot to the touch?

No, it had been sitting not in use and charging for maybe an hour. I turned it off till it cooled down.

  • My computer shut down on Friday night, and it was quite hot to the touch.

My computer shut down on its own Friday night and was quite hot to the touch.  On Sunday afternoon I booted it up and got an error message that said the cooling fan was not functional.  I am a computer technician, so I disassembled the laptop, and then plugged the ribbon cable back in so I could hit the power button and the fan was turning properly.  The vents are not obstructed at all.
After I reassembled the laptop, I was able to power it up without the error message and it has been running ok, but I have been watching it closely, checking to make sure I hear the fan running every so often.  So far so good.
I also adjusted the HP Cool Sense to maximum cooling.
Aside from perhaps applying some Arctic Silver between the heat sink and the processor, are there any other steps I might want to take before ordering a fan?
If I do need to order a new cooling fan, what part do I need to get?

Here's your Service and Maintenance Guide:
HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide
    Page 90
The main steps to cooling are as you have already surmised - a decent application of thermal paste and a fan that works as it should.
The old 902 cooling fan error doesn't apply to this dv6-6000 series.  Assuming your BIOS is up to date (nothing new since 9/2011), and your drivers are good, there is nothing else that should be related in that department.

  • My iphone is getting hot to the touch and the battery is rapidly losing power.  I reset the phone but it continues doing the same thing.

My phone is rapidly losing battery life - even when it is just sitting idle.  The back of the phone is hot to the touch.  I reset the phone but it is still doing the same thing.  Thanks.

This happens if I upload too many HD photos at once. You are overworking the processor. Just leave your phone off and put it on top of a plastic bag of ice to cool it down. To keep this from happening you have to remove apps from the multitasker by double tapping the home button when the phone is on the home screen or in an app, then hold down on an app, then just press the little red minus signs. This won't delte the app, it just quits them (for example: quitting Skype will not allow you to recieve calls, quitting Facebook will stop you from receiving messages until you reopen the app, quitting the Phone app will not stop you from getting calls or texts though). This will save a great deal of battery.
