Elitebook 8740w battery detected but 0% and cannot charge

I have a Elitebook 8740w with Windows 7.
Since a few days i can't start my laptop when i'm not plugged-in.
My battery status says: 0% available (to AC power, battery not charging)
Is my battery broken or is there something else wrong?
Any solutions?
Thanx

  • No battery detected but computer runs on the battery!

There is an X on the battery icon. When I check the power info, it states that there is no battery installed. However, when I unplug the power cord, the laptop obviously runs off the battery. I did remove the battery and leave it out a few minutes and then put it back in. No change in the icon.
Why is the battery not being detected but it is obviously charged and able to be used? Any ideas? My MacBook Pro is about 3 years old.

The battery is rarely ever used on this laptop. It sits on the desk and is only used there so I doubt the battery has gone through many cycles at all.
That is a big clue. More batteries in MBPs have problems from lack of use than nearly daily use. Please see this Apple article:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    noting the section:
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing.
Also review this excellent user tip:

At this point, you can help people help you by posting your battery stats. Do "About this Mac..." then click "More info..." This launches System Profiler, or "SP." In the left-hand pane, single-click "Poweer" and a bunch of power-related info shows up in teh main pane. Under "Battery Information are a number of things. Copy and everything in that section EXCEPT the battery serial number and paste into a reply to your own post. Then people can give you an idea of how to proceed, as that info pretty much tells all about the condition of the battery.

  • Battery detected but not charging

My PowerBook's AC adapter is plugged into a strip that is then plugged into the wall outlet in my room. About three weeks ago I went abroad and so I turned off the strip before I left, but inadvertently forgot to shut down the computer. Thus, the computer switched to battery power, but once the battery died, it didn't recharge.
When I came back, I turned the strip back on and booted the computer back up. The date and time had been reset to 9:00p on December 31st, 1969. The indicator light on the AC adapter was orange for a few minutes (to indicate charging), and then it switched to green as if the battery had been fully charged. However, the battery menu extra shows the battery life at 0%. I left the computer on for a few hours to see if it would charge, but no such luck - as soon as I unplugged the AC power, the computer immediately turned off.
I tried resetting the PMU, but it made no difference - again, the indicator light is orange for a few minutes and then turns to green, while the menu extra shows a 0% charge.
Is it possible that leaving the battery fully dead for 3 weeks has ruined its ability to recharge? Is there anything that I can do other than buy a new battery?
Thanks very much for any help.

I don't know if this is related or just an odd coincidence, but my AC adapter has ALSO died. It began sparking the other day, so I unplugged it, and now when I plug it back in, it makes a weird clicking sound and won't power the computer.
Given that I had NO way to power the computer at all - and that I have a project due on Tuesday - I had no choice but to go to the Apple store and buy a new battery AND a new AC adapter. Both are working fine and the battery is charging like it should be.
I just wanted to post this here in case anyone thinks there might actually be something wrong with the computer itself that caused both components to fry - if so, I'd like to determine that soon before it happens again.

  • IPhone 4S will not charge. Can see battery icon but does not take charge

iPhone 4S will not charge. Can see battery icon but does not charge

    Hello Kbeaty531,
The following article provides some good information and useful troubleshooting steps for situations where your iPhone appears to not be charging.
iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive
If you see the image below, charge the phone with an iPhone USB power adapter for at least 15 minutes.
You should see this image when iPhone begins to charge:
If the screen still displays the low-battery icon, try turning iPhone off and then on again.
If the issue persists, try resetting the iPhone while connected to the iPhone charger.

But now i need to refresh window and i past over 60hours to try to fix the issue to arrive to this point : i need to refresh windows back to original state, and windows do not 'know' the recovery partition is right under its nose (doupt it is corrupted, i made a backup image of the current hard drive just in case, and right after i did trigger the refreshing back to factory, it worked, but windows 8.1 'broke' a few minutes aways from the final step to download windows 10...
Hard drive could not be recovered so i had to CMD/Clean the hard drive and re-install the old 'slowered/infected' image backup i had and now it refuse to detect the partition wit the window refreshing part.
Snapshot show the disks, partition at the end, the 11go size is the refreshing partition and wit another program it can be seen it is NOT empty...

  • Where can I download Firefox 5. Have installed 6, nothing but problems and cannot use

Cannot open more than one window. Need to shut down and restart in order to get Firefox working short term. Links don't work. Am not the only Mac user experiencing these frustrating problems. Firefox 5 was good, please I wish to install Firefox 5 again.

    ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/5.0/win32/
I tried 7.0 beta and still the same with half of the addons disabled.
edit: removed random unofficial download site and replaced with proper link.

  • Elitebook 8740w fingerprint reader not found and etc.

Had a catastrophic drive failure. Installed new drive and Win 7 SP1. Having trouble getting everything to work. Is there a driver, utility, bundle, suite available for this computer? Tried Protect Tools Security Manager, would not install  because of hardware incompatibility, there must be 50 versions of that Suite, I used the one for Win 7 64 bit, sp62498. Web cam works with Skype but can't find the utility. The list continues, any suggestions other than buying the restore disk? Or can I?I generally like the bundled HP software, where do I find it? Thanks

Downloaded the manager, selected my computer model, must be a hundred drivers. Downloaded all the critical, do I need the recommended as well?. I am in the process of down loading a gig of drivers. Most of my stuff is working, I just don't know if good drivers are loaded or just using what Windows found when it was installed. This has been a lesson for me, I will always buy a Factory Restore disk. Wonder if I can still buy a restore disk for my HP?Thanks for you help.

  • On the 3rd day, my battery became FIRE HOT and LOST CHARGE QUICKLY

First, I LOVE my iPhone 4, it's amazing, but I did want to at least share what happened to me this week. My iPhone 4 battery started going from 100% charge to 40% in 90-minutes - It was only in standby mode. The phone became VERY HOT, especially around the steel edges. I called Apple Care and they said "Do not use the phone because it could be hazardous" and advised I go to an Apple store. I did, and they exchanged it after verifying it wasn't safe. Apple has the best customer care on Earth. While I was there, someone else was there exchanging their phone for the same reason - They have a secret stash in the back packaged in unmarked small black boxes, just for this reason. Anyway, the phone rep at Apple confirmed to me that there is a battery issue with the new phones. They guy at the Apple store who helped me said he has seen few issues for signal or the yellow screen, but a lot of hot batteries that do not hold a charge.

That's really interesting, my iPhones battery is horrendous, I've just finished reassuring it, powering it back up to see whether I can improve the situation (looses 26% charge in standby at night when I slept for 7 hours. My first comment to my friend was, the iPhone 4 was amazing, but was very warm. Will be interesting to see if my problems over with this reset, or if I too have a battery problem. Thanks for sharing.

  • TS1909 so its normal if the battery is at 99% and the charger is indicating full charge?

i usually drain my battery daily and plug it in the charger before i sleep. But when i wake up i notice the battery plug is green (which is full charge) but when i check my battery % status, at the status bar it says its 99% with a full charge. Is it a normal thing for the battery? Its a brand new laptop (13 inch macbook pro non-retina display) got it atleast 2 weeks ago. Thank you.

Read the user manual that came with your computer.

  • My iphone battery has ran out and wont charge all i see is the red battery icon , what shall i do?

my iPhone 4 was working fine then the battery died as it normally would and now iv tried to charge it and it will not charge all it shows on the screen is the red battery icon i left the phone to charge so it can turn on by its self for about 30-1 hr but still didn't come on, then i thought the problem was probably the charger so i switched chargers to a much newer one but still no sign of it coming on, what should i do?

Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears (10-15 seconds).

  • My ipad is not going past the logo screen and it shuts down when I have battery, then it says I need to charge it. I am charging it but it isn't charging. Then my ipad isn't charging (doesn't say not charging) I've tried everything!

First, my ipad wasn't charging. Then it shuts down when I have 7% battery, now when I turn it on, it says to charge it. And when I do charge it, it doesn't work. Now, I did it once it worked. Now I can't get past the logo screen and when I do it shuts right off again. Please help!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that situations where you cannot boot your iPad and cannot charge your iPad can be very frustrating. In this situation, I would recommend using the attached article as a reference for troubleshooting.

  • I got a replacement battery, reset the SMC, and my computer will still turn off unexpectedly.

    Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, 2ghz iz, C0*****F8V.
My original battery wore down to the point where it would not be recognized as available and the computer couldn't power on without shutting down in a few minutes. I ordered a replacement battery, certified Apple genuine, but after 3 days it reached about half charge and the computer died, not turning back on without the adapter. When it did reboot the battery was at 0% and not charging, and the computer was incredibly slow and laggy.
I refunded and returned this battery and got a new one. I've had it installed about 2 days and the computer will still turn off if not plugged in at about 80-85%. I have reset my SMC multiple times and my PRAM as well. coconutBattery says nothing is wrong with the battery.
What can I do? I'm a freelance video editor and this is basically calling me out sick from work for a week now.
    Thanks!

Do these codes refer strictly to the battery, or to possibly other components that interact with it?
I can not give you a definitive answer to that.  The 'x's' which I have marked should be letters.  If so, could you provide them and that may give us a clue:
If that is actually what was generated by the AHT, then I am a bit surprised.
At any rate, the bottom line is that the MBP does not like your battery even though the output information that you provided does not indicate anything adverse.  An Apple battery should correct your problem, I would think, but there is an alternative that I came across yesterday that you might consider.  OWC. a Mac oriented vendor, is now selling replacement batteries for MBPs.

Based on the reputation of the company, I personally would be willing to try their non-Apple branded replacement.  I have dealt with them a fair amount, so my statement is from experience.  Note that is has a 1 year guarantee as do the Apple batteries.  ( I will need a replacement for my 2010 MBP and I will probably purchase it from them)
    Ciao.

  • Laptop says, "plugged in, charging" but it's not charging

I have a Satellite T134-1330 and it is a year and a half old. I was traveling, so my computer was stashed away for three weeks. When I got back, it was dead, but turned on when I plugged it in. Then I noticed later that it the battery was at 22% and not charging any more, yet it says it is.  I tried taking it out and putting it back in, and I also tried draining the battery and then charging it. Now it just says, "0% remaining (plugged in, charging)" I can't figure it out! I googled it and found someone with the same problem. Could the first response be the solution? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100703035214AA9YPb0 Thanks

I've been having problems with the laptop being plugged in but then shutting down without warning from low battery. Just today my laptop shut off without warning so I started really paying attention to it, and I noticed that the battery icon would say "Plugged in, charging" but the charge was actually decreasing.  It got down to 8% and I was frantically googling for a solution, because it was losing charge even though plugged in, when I found your post, Peter.  I followed the steps and now it is charging and is up to 87%. Remains to be seen if this is a permanent solution, but it saved me a lot of aggravation today!   I have dozens of eBay auctions going right now and don't want to be without my laptop.  Thanks, and please reply if you have any more information about this issue with the Satellite L645D laptops.
