EM Grid Control - Licensing

Hello,
I've read the licensing and understand that the grid control/repository is free. What I did not find is how one can use this.
In example, if I have several clients who have production database. Can I setup a grid in my company and just setup the agents to my clients database servers and have them feed my grid control? As in the scenario is there a difference between a 1 man company(consultant) and a service company with many dba?
Or is the licensing orientated around the concept of 1 company, many internal database,1 internal grid control?
Thanks
/Jan

I believe the use of Grid Control itself is free, but you have to buy the extra packs if you use them (e.g. change management, configuration management and tuning packs).
As for the repository:
A separate Oracle Database can be installed and used as a Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control (OEM Grid Control) repository without additional license requirements, provided that all the targets (databases, applications, and so forth) managed in this repository are correctly licensed. This database may also be used for the RMAN repository. It may not be used or deployed for other uses.
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/license.112/e10594/editions.htm#BABDJGGI
In your case, the orientation is on the company for which the Grid control is monitoring the databases for (in your case per customer).
When you choose the setup you describe, you end up paying for your own Oracle Database Enterprise Edition license for using OEM (as this is your 'property').
You might also consider good firewalling in this, as i don't think customers like it when they can see each others servers / network... ;)

  • OEM grid control license

From what I understand the OEM 10g grid control is free of charge (comes with licensed oracle EE) but the additional management pack needs to be license separately. I am wondering without the management pack what functionaries does it give you? Is it similar to what the old dba studio/console offer?

Two other things you could do is go to the bottom of Grid Control home page, and click on the icon that looks like a + sign in front of a document, right next to "About Oracle Enterprise Manager". This would turn on licensing annotation on the hyperlinks that connect the different parts of the UI. This also provides clue as to what requires license and what doesn't. The caveat is that the annotation is not 100% complete, especially for the newer area, so some of functionalities that require licensing may not be tagged.
Finally, check the licensing guide in the Enterprise Manager documentation set.

  • Database limits for Grid control repository?

Document "Oracle® Database Licensing Information / 10g Release 2 (10.2)" [Part Number B14199-10] discusses the restricted use license of database for grid control repository and rman repository use.
nfrastructure Repository Databases A separate Oracle Database can be installed and used as a Recovery Manager (RMAN) repository without additional license requirements, provided that all the Oracle databases managed in this repository are correctly licensed. This repository database may also be used for the Oracle Enterprise Grid Control repository. It may not be used or deployed for other uses.

This database may also be used for the RMAN repository. It may not be used or deployed for other uses.
There is no discussion of licensing requirements for options of the database (RAC, partitioning, etc) when the database stays within these repository use restrictions. Therefore it is unclear whether the Grid Control can be configured to provide appropriate monitoring without additional licenses.

This is the reply I received from release
    management:
If they have deployed an EE edition of the database
as an OEM repository, and then want to protect that
with RAC or Data Guard, or make more Secure with ASO
or Database Vault, or indeed get any of the
additional benefits any of the options provide, then
they will need to license the option.
Let me know if that is still not clear, and I'll go
    back again.Thanks.
There is a minor inconsistency in their response ... they say "if deployed on EE". However, as far as I know OEM repository required VPD, which is available only on Enterprise Edition (see http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B16240_01/doc/em.102/e10953/pre-installation_req.htm#CHDGIEAD)
However, it is quite clear that 'they' are telling us that the RAC option is not inherent in the "Special Use Licensing" as described http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/editions.htm#CJAHFHBJ .
The implication (not necessarily a topic for this forum) is that the OEM is not guaranteed to be able to provide basic monitoring and reporting functionality without additional license fees to make OEM more highly available than the targets being monitored.
It would be nice to have the information about which Oracle products (database and app server) have included licenses with a basic Grid Control install and which require additional licenses as part of Chapter 1 of http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b40010/toc.htm (That document goes into excruciating detail about the extra packs, but ignores the basics.)
For that matter, since OEM Grid Control can not be purchased, it would be nice to have a list of products that provide license to install Grid Control, again in Chapter 1 of the Grid Control Licensing document listed above.
I appreciate your time in having dug into this.

  • What are the Grid Control basic features  (without the licensed packages)

    Hi everyone,
I'm all new to OEM Grid Control and I've been asked to write a document that sums up and explains all the OEM features (Database ones only).
The reason I created this thread is because I have a problem doing that. Indeed, Oracle insists on their licensed packages in their documentation and doesn't make very clear what's available without any of those packages.
I've been looking for some other documentation than Oracle one but without much success.
I really have to know the features available without those packages because I've been asked to determine whether or not Diagnostic Pack, Tuning Pack and Configuration pack are necessary (i.e If we have to purchase the licenses)
So could anyone tell me precisely what's available without those packages or link me some sources I could use?
Thank you very much in advance
    Olivier

    Hi Erika,
Unfortunately, it appears to be true: to be able to get notifications and alerts, you need to have the Diagnostics Pack license. Reference the following document: Oracle Enterprise Manager Licensing Information 10g Release 4 (10.2.0.4.0) Chapter 2: Enterprise Database Management:
The Diagnostics Pack includes the following features, which you can use after purchasing a license for the Diagnostics Pack.
    Automatic Workload Repository
    Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM)
    Performance monitoring (database and host)
Event notifications: notification methods, rules, and schedules
...In the document that you have cited, I think that "standard" and "out of the box" simply mean that Oracle has these alerts and notifications preconfigured for you when you install the software. But to actually use them, you need to have the appropriate license.

  • Do I need Enterprise Edition license for Grid Control

We are planning on installing Oracle 10g Grid Control onto a server that does not currently have Oracle on at all. It is a 2 processor server. Using this we will be monitoring Oracle databases on 2 other servers, each of which also have 2 processors.
My question is do I need Enterprise Edition or will Standard Edition be ok? We will be using the diagnostics pack in Grid Control, and also rman on the same server. Do I definitely need Enterprise Edition?
    Many thanks,
    Paula.

Licence questions should be always addressed to an authorized Oracle sales representative, no one in this forum can give you an official and committed answer, you can rely on.
At least documentation shows all Management Packs require the Enterprise Edition:

  • Which? - License for OEM Grid Control or just the additional Packs and Add-Ins?

I took a look at the price list and I wanted to clarify the "Named User Plus". The Diagnostic and Tuning Packs are each shown as $100 for the named user. As a DBA, if I have a named user license for these two management packs, does this mean that I can manage as many databases as needed with these two management packs?

Wow, 25 separate dbcontrols sound like a nightmare.
By the way, our Oracle rep just happened to come here yesterday, and he validated what was said here.
You can install the Grid Control free; you simply un-check the Packs/Add-Ins during the install.
As I understand it, you would install the Grid Control Agent first on each server, then when you install Oracle RDBMS, the Universal Installer will detect the Agent and enable the Grid Control instead of the Database Control.
Then you install the OEM Grid Control repository and software on a separate server, and that is where you manage all of the Oracle RDBMS servers from.
He also said to use the highest version Grid Control Agents on the database servers and repository server and keep the versions of that software in sync, which is separate from the Oracle RDBMS version.

  • Do I need license to patch agent through grid control deployment wizard

In grid control, we have license to use database diagnostics pack and database tuning pack.
I know wihtout license for provision pack, I cannot patch database homes using grid control deployment tab. But I'm wondering if I can patch grid control agent through deployment page without license for the prvision pack.
    thanks

There is no management pack license needed for patching the agent. You can get clear details what link needs what packs when you click on '+' symbol (Show Management Pack Information) right to the "About Oracle Enterprise Manager" at the extreme down on OEM screen.
When you click on "Show Management Pack Information", it will show what pack needed next to every link in paranthesis. If there is no pack information mentioned next to link means, there is no license needed for that link.

  • Does Standard Edition include a license to install Grid Control?

Environment are some 10.2 Standard Edition RAC clusters... DB, CRS, listener, ASM with Database Control running on random nodes. I would like to know if the SE license includes the right to install and use Grid Control (instead of Database Control) to monitor the SE clusters? With GC I can have some failover with multiple OMS that I've used before to good effect, but I'm not sure if I can install it if this shop doesn't own EE licenses. Anyone know off hand?

Doesn't this licensing info pertain to the (separate) Database used for Grid Control (OMS) repository only?
To me the paragraph just says that you can use a separate host for Grid Control server, without licensing additional Database processors (as long as you stick to the Special-use requirements).
So, what about license for Grid Control itself? (i.e. Management Agents, OMS, Management Repository, ...) I believe this was the op's concern. And what does "provided ... targets managed ... are correctly licensed." really mean?
Perhaps the licensing details for e.g. Database and AS can provide some information, if related license includes the right to install and use GC to manage such installations and deployments.
I believe a license is "included" as long as you have a license agreement in place for your other products. I think this was also discussed a few times earlier on oracle-l.
Either way, as Hans says above, you need to verify this for yourself, for your business. (Implicit, heard-of license rights are a bit hard to prove.)
    I'd better add:
Not all of the functionality of OEM Grid (or Database) Control is ok to use without purchasing extra options. Some of it are requires EE and Management Packs.

  • Weblogic license required for 11g Grid Control?

Weblogic is a pre-requisite for installing 11g Grid Control.
if you do not have weblogic already, and your only requirement for it is to use for Grid Control, is a license for Weblogic required?
I have raised an SR on this - and have been told a license is required.
I'm staggered by this - the packs in Grid have always been licensable, but the very basic functionality has always been free - including the use of an 'infrastructure' database to house the repository.
I'm interested to hear other peoples' experiences and whether this is a 'known' fact.

I've already asked Oracle sales staff about it, but I don't want to mislead you.
Could you remind them their restricted-use license?
Grid Control includes a restricted-use license for the Oracle Database and Oracle Application Server components required to deploy Grid Control. Refer to Section 1.3.3,
"Restricted-Use Licensing," for details on the restricted-use licenses

  • License for OEM Grid Control or just the additional Packs and Add-Ins?

I have searched the forums and found the link below in a discussion about the Enterprise Manager Grid Control, but nobody answered this question specifically:
Can you freely install and use the Grid Control (with no additional Packs or Add-Ins)? Or does the Grid Control itself require a license?
P.S. The price list linked here only displays prices for Grid Control Packs and Add-Ins:

I would like to know how you manage your data guards when you do not have the license for active data guard with the grid control agents. The standby database is in mount mode, so the agents cannot query the database.
What do you guys do in such cases? Remove the agent? Or wait till a switchover?

  • Can I make a Data Guard configuration using EM console without Grid Control

Can I make a Data Guard configuration using EM console without Grid Console?
Can I download Grid Console software from Oracle website without cost?

    Assuming this is for 10g,
You could use Oracle® Data Guard Broker
Even you can download Grid Control software for free from Oracle site, you can't legally use it without license.

  • Overview of Oracle Grid Control components

    Hello,
We want to look at Oracle Grid Control feature. Can anyone make clear to us what components need to be installed where and how do the components communicate with eachother. I am talking about Enterprise Manager, agents, databases etc.
Preferable we are looking for a graphical overview of components. Anyone have a picture from some presentation?
We do not have a grid, but want to use the Grid Control.
If I am not clear please tell me.

You have one machine for OMS, the management server, that runs the app server and management repository plus an agent to monitor itself. On each machine you want to monitor you install the agent. Administrators connect with a browser to the web interface of the OMS, which enables control over the targets that the repository knows about.
Following links goes to Product Center and Docu library for GC 10.2 rel 3.
The basic stuff is available with your database licensing, but many features require EE and additional Management pack licenses. Talk to your sales rep for more info.

  • Grid Control for windows

    Hi Experts,
We're trying to download and install Oracle grid control for windows 64bit but we can't find any 64bit release!
Can we safely download and install Enterprise Manager 11g Grid Control Release (11.1.0.1.0) - Windows 32bit from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/grid-control/downloads/index.html ? or should we be installing a different version??
Should Grid control be installed on the DB server in the 1st place or should it be installed on another server?
    Current Oracle Software: 11.2.0.1 64bit.
Server OS: Windows 2008 Server 64bit.
Can you kindly let us know.
    Thanks

We finally got our facts right..
The Grid Control Enterprise Manager comes only in 32 bits.. However the Grid Control agent that needs to be installed on the DB server comes in 32/64bits and is supported under different OS platforms.
Metalink (Doc ID 412431.1) shows the Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control Certification Checker/matrix that we found extremely useful.
Enterprise Manager Grid Control comes with the basic features and is free to use. Any extra features are considered addons and do need to be properly licensed.
    Thanks
