Emac 1.25ghz 1gb (i think 10.4.11) grey screen/no boot.

Hi all,
eMac wont boot, just sits on the grey screen (with no spinning loading thing, no folder with question mark or anything). I cant tell if it is chiming (the speakers have never worked on it). It doesn't sound like the HD is spinning up (If i remember right emacs had fans so that is all I can here) - but am i right in thinking if the HD was broken it would go to the grey screen with folder with question mark?
any help greatly received,
Olly.

hmmmm.
Turns out it wasn't as simple as that....
After turning it back on with the stick of after market ram out, it booted up lovely into osx, ran nice. a couple of hours later the owner plugged her ipod into it - itunes said that the ipod was not registered to that mac (even tho the ipod has only ever been used with this machine). So I got called back to look at this. I clicked the 'sync' button in her itune's library and the screen went all blue (everything disappeared including the cursor).
I left it like it for a couple of mins - no change, held in the power button, turned it off then back on again, back to the gray screen from before, No boot. unplugged the ipod and her drawing pad thinggy.
turned it off, back on again - same thing. turned it off, unplugged the power lead for 5 mins, plugged back in turned on and booted fine into osx, perfectly. plugged the ipod in, it opened itunes and synced fine with no problems.
What I don't understand is why there is no pattern to it. could it be the ipod? - but before when it just had the grey screen nothing was connected to it and it still wouldn't boot, am I right in thinking that the ram I took out is fine and it was the unplugging of the mac from the power that made it boot?
Could it be overheating? - although it is completely standard mac and there is no blockage at the back of it so it can breath properly (am i right in thinking they have a thermo cut off so they just turn them selves off before causing themselves damage?)
thanks again,
Olly

  • GarageBand v2&? latency if update to Tiger(and add Ram) to eMac 1.25ghz

    Hi,
I have used GB on and off and like it alot
    and to preface my post
and if anyone with a emac with these specs (1.25Ghz 1GB ram and a 80GB HD
(the USB 2.0 model) I think there is one model after mine with a 1.42 or 1.45Ghz processor
    1) If Someone just added Tiger how did Garage-band work after? Latency issues or
(I am using Version 2) of GB I do not need the pod casting features of V3 and V4 looks cool but V2 is fine
2)* and if someone added Tiger and upgraded to 2GB of Ram how did Garage-band work any issues with their eMac or other Mac *(I don't want to crash it)
I like Garage-band a lot and have posted on Macjams.com (but not for awhile) I have used Audacity
Abelton Lite (acquired through a gear purchase) and am up to version 6, Reason Adapted for Korg (V3), Tracktion V1 (*not bad) got it free when Mackie gave it away (free full version and license) but never pursued V2 or V3 and I think its on its way out now also, I keep coming back to Garage-band V2 as its user friendly, can use live instruments, virtual instruments with a midi controller and loops as well. my eMac is a 1.25ghz USB 2.0 (version) 1GB of ram and a 80GB hard drive. *I am running Panther 10.3.9 and as any one running Panther I am sure realize the browser issues and even getting access to free-ware or demo's , I read on OWC www.macsales.com that my eMac and the one later with a higher GHz processor can run with 2GB and they referenced a Mac Document as well. I think by adding Tiger (just adding it by itself)? I may run in to latency issues (from what I have heard and read) so I am considering doing two things (updating to Tiger 10.4.1) and adding
ram (two 1GB sticks) depending on where I buy the Tiger Update (used for eMac or the universal installer (may not be correct term) and buying reliable ram The cost could vary
new I saw Tiger for around $99.00 and used for emac $3.00 (risk taking yes) and ram
was $ 29.00 a stick so $58.00 + shipping on ram and anywhere from $3.00 (if lucky to $99.00 + shipping (so could be as low as $61.00 to as high or higher $157.00
? though its a 2004 eMac do I want to invest (on the high side $157.00 on a 6 year old eMac or save my dollars and wait and get a Imac (? 1199.00 + applecare) Education pricing) or a laptop (the white molded plastic Mac-book is ? $849.00 pr $899.00
but would like 4GB of ram and a large HD as I would like to get in to Logic Studio down the road or Logic Studio Express* (just don't buy the education version as You can not update to the full program)*not sure why that is but I read it in several user reviews in the Apple Ed section on Apple Express (You used to get a price cut (prior version of express and full version not sure about the current versions (I guess If You bought the full version at a discount You would ? should ? be o.k. (I would check that for sure though and Logic used to be $1,000 and Express $500.00 so it has come down a huge amount and has great features (imo)
    * crazy enough I was surfing for free-ware and a Russian site I came upon some how?
was offering down loads of Jam-packs (even the #1 Jam Pack which is no longer sold) and its the only one I ever bought as its cross genre ,
*The Russian site even had Logic Studio 9 (full version, main stage, all jam packs ? in English or Russian but obviously illegal (I did not touch anything) or attempt any downloads (it had Mac and PC and high dollar programs of each if it really worked or even down loaded (I did not touch anything)
In the past I did buy Jam Pack Number One (no Genre or type noted) a nice varied program and also Sonic Boom Box but I give it a so so as you need a large 61 or full 88 key midi keyboard (or I am doing something wrong) *I use a M-Audio Radium 49 and about 2/3 of the keys work (or get sound unless You adjust the octave switch) I was interested in the virtual instruments the most too, I have no issues with the Jam Pack Vitual Instruments (guess read the manaul (again)
and if anyone with a emac with these specs
    1) just added Tiger how did Gargeband work after
    2) and if someone added Tiger and upgraded to 2GB of Ram how did Garageband work
and any issues with their eMac (I don't want to crash it)

  • Help-eMac froze during software update and is now stuck on Grey Screen!

So I recently moved, and was updating the software on my eMac. While it was updating, I was looking through some photos(probably my first mistake). When I tried opening one torwards the end of the update, my computer froze up. I waited a few minutes for it to resolve but ended up resetting the computer by holding down the power switch(second mistake?). When I restarded the computer, all I got was a grey screen. Now I'm stuck and don't know what to do. Can someone out there help me? I can't find my restart disc and tried the command,option,p,r-trick.
    thanks for your time,
    Andrew

    MingusBass,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Ouch. As you've already discovered, running anything else while a system or security update is running is not a good idea. If you use the power button to force-restart a Mac while it's still at the "optimizing system" stage, stalled or not, it can damage the Finder and the startup manager / login items (e.g., leave the previous version marked .old without finishing 'blessing' the new copy).
Is it possible to borrow a second Mac with the same OS / security version, or a bootable external hard drive? It's possible to boot a Mac that crashed while optimizing the system in FireWire target disk mode and replace the damaged files (bear in mind, I say that as an interested observer at work several years ago and I can't swear I remember each and every step, other than replacing a Finder.old in the System folder).
You really need your OS X Install disc, which would let you do an Archive and Install. I'm doubtful if booting into single-user mode to run the Unix file system check utility fsck would help but you can always try it.

    Hi guys.
I've had my MacBook Pro for 2 years now. Last night it suddenly kept glitching to a dark grey screen every now and then, then it would flash yellow / blue spots, and now it won't go past the grey screen even when I reboot it.
I don't think I can access my disk anymore as I've moved across countries since I've first gotten my laptop.  it was working perfectly fine before  it kept going to the dark grey screen with a little blue on the bottom.
If it helps, my camera light is still on, and it seems that my computer is working properly itself, but won't go past this grey screen.
I'm a college student and am really panicking about this - can anyone please tell me what to do?
Thank you & sorry for the long post.

What operating system are you running on it? (iOS 5.1 is for iPhone, iPad...not a Mac).

Can’t see imovie. Its like the Imovie thinks I have a third screen?
I have connected an external screen, but now Imovie thinks I have a third? Can’t figure how to fix the problem and see Imovie on my primary screen. I did try deletingand reinstall the programme, but the same problem keeps turning up.
Its possible to minimize the programme, but then I click on the programme in the bar, it opens up in the third screen… and I only got 2….
    Any one got an idea?

    Hey,
I'm sorry for my unpatience, but I need to fix my mac as soon as possible because it was our single completely functioning computer around the house.
Isn't there a temporary fix or anything?
Thank you in advance to the ones who are willing to help me!

  • My emac won't get past the grey screen with spinning indicator

before i went to bed last nite it was fine. when i woke up i click on the screen and got the little rainbow ball. that lasted for about 5-10 minutes so i had to push the button. when i try to turn it on now it gets to the grey screen with the spinning indicator but won't get past that. any help would be appreciated

An Archive and Install will preserve you user settings and data. You will need a minimum of 5 GB free on the hard drive to perform an A&I; you can reduce the space required by about 1 GB by selecting the option to install language support only for the language you use (assuming you don't need multiple languages).
However, after seeing your other post (BTW, it'll be easier to keep track if relted issues are in the same thread), you do not want to try an A&I if Disk Utility is reporting anything about 'could not be repaired'. Doing so will would ensure problems down the road, if it worked at all. It's possible for one disk problem to mask another. Whenever Disk Utility (or any other repair utility) reports making repairs, it's good practice to repeat the repair until it reports no problems found or it becomes clear it cannot repair the disk.
DiskWarrior has an excellent track record at repairing problems that Disk Utility cannot (especially Disk Utility versions prior to OS X 10.4.2).
If the drive cannot be repaired, you may be able to keep it by doing an erase install with the write zeros (one pass) option. That will update the hard drive firmware record of bad disk sectors to avoid using. If there are only a few bad sectors, that may let you keep using the hard drive for several more years. An erase install will do just that to your data, through. If you have access to another Mac with either a large amount of free disk space of a DVD burner, you can try using the other Mac as host and the eMac as target in FireWire target disk mode. You can run the host's copy of Disk Utility on the eMac hard drive, and hopefully be able to mount the emac HD so that you can back up the data in your Home directory.

Thank you so very much! My husband is in Afghanistan and calls at different times. If I am on a call and can't answer him it could be days before I hear from him again. I never thought to just restart my phone! Duh...this is my first smartphone so I am learning. All day people were calling while I was on the phone but I couldn't answer. Thank GOD none of the calls were my husband because it would break my heart if I missed his call. Thank you again and GOD bless you! Ashley Combahee

  • Grey screen, loading circle... Stuck, think I made a boo boo.

    Hello guys,
Firstly I'd like to admit I'm an idiot for thinking the OS could deal with this. I have an early aluminum MB, 2.4 (before they named it the pro), Leopard & Windows 7.
My issue - I installed Win7 aaaaages ago and just started re-using it recently to play The Sims 3. The partition is tiny as it was just an experement to see how Win7 would work. So I go to install The Sims and it tells me there isn't enough room, so I store the program files on an external. It crashed a bit and then I come up the genius plan of installing MacDrive 8 so I can store the files on the OS partition.
I played that for a day or two, now when I go to boot into OS X... Yup, you got it, grey screen with loading circle.
    I've tried:
    Booting into Safe Boot
    Reseting the PRAM
Removed RAM I installed a few days ago
My superdrive discontinued to work 12 days outside my warrenty, but I've arranged to borrow a USB CD drive this weekend and I've located my original disks in perfect condition, so I should be able to do a disk ulitity on it this weekend...
MacDrive had a repair program which I used but the error 'MacDrive was unable to verify *insert HD name here* because an error occurred' but couldn't tell me the error.
I'm still able to view all files from Win7 so it's got to be a start up software thing right?
I'm expecting insults but if I can get it going again I'm be pretty chuffed... and a lesson learnt well

This is the one I followed. Unfortunately, my super drive doesn't work and I've tried a USB drive too, but its the same issue.
Do you know of a download I can boot from? One that doesnt need to boot from an optical drive.

  • EMac - Grey Screen Dilemma

Help needed for eMac, On startup there is a wierd buzzing noise for about 30 seconds then the grey screen appears with a flashing ? and Mac OS icon alternating on a folder, then nothing!, I have tried reinstalling OS X, No good, I have tried single user mode, still no good, the problem seems to be that the Hard drive has gone and I dont know which way to go. In fact everything seems to lead me down the same road - Nowhere, can anybody out there help, please!

Well, this depends on how valuable the data is. You can send hard drives out for forensic data recovery, but that is pricey. There are data utilities I can recomend but the key there is whether or not you can tell if the drive actually spins up. This is hard on an eMac because the hard drive is buried in the center of the unit. It can be gotten out by a regular Joe but there are a lot of little screws to keep track of and a few little cables to undo. I would recomend that you not dissemble it until you have a new 500 Gb drive to stick back in it. Once it is out, you can pop it in a tower and see if it clicks and spins or just clicks. A drive that does not spin is very very pricey to recover data from.

  • Grey screen -access denied, I think

Brand new imac, this week. Copied some files off backup drive onto desktop. Tried to drop into HD. Got 'Read only' message.  Got info, & changed permission to read and write,  but changed another below it to 'no access'. The sign on HD didn't connect with my brain. Got the spinning ball for 20 minutes. Turned off machine & start up gets as far as grey screen with apple. I think I denied myself access to the drive. And there is no start up dvd or drive, which I knew would eventually be an issue, just not this quickly. Use to OS 10.5. Fear I got a lot of learnin' to do.
Will a 'safe boot' get me in to correct my error? Thanks.

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name), and run Repair Permissions (not Repair Disk.) Then reboot as usual.

  • Grey Screen start - Tried EVERYTHING (I think) ...Please help?

    Hi there,
OK, so this computer has served me well since the year 2000! But yesterday the poo hit the fan and now we got problems...
    Computer: PowerBook G4, running OS X 10.3.9
    Symptoms:
    start up chime works
    apple and wheel-thing show up
Sometimes it flashes to a blue screen for a bit
but then ends up a blank grey screen
DOES start up in Safe Mode, but upon restart - same thing - grey.
    Stuff I've tried:
Safe Mode start - got rid of all login items (I left itunes and some "disk warrior starter") - reboot - still grey
reset the power management unit through the button under the keyboard (although in safe mode the date is still accurate...so...?)
when I reset that PMU i got a pink and green screen on startup, followed by flashing stripes, followed by grey.
Tried fsck single-user start - did basic check - "all files seemed to be ok"
Tried restarting with a new account - Got a flashing ? and globe/world for a bit - then grey.
---I think that is everything. I dont have any disks, or another mac to network with ....
If anyone knows of a fix, or other things I should try, I'd be VERY grateful!!
I could even use it in safe mode, but I need the internet (running from a PC card).
    Thanks very much,
    Kacey
P.S. it took a short fall from a couch the other day too, I thought something was knocked loose inside, but I opened it and everything looks attached and copacetic.
    thanks

    Hi again Kacey,
P.S. it took a short fall from a couch the other day too, I thought something was knocked loose inside, but I opened it and everything looks attached and copacetic.
I would double check RAM and card etc. for loose fit.
Tried restarting with a new account - Got a flashing ? and globe/world for a bit - then grey.
When you tried booting to the other account it was showing that it was trying to find a Network startup. If can startup in Safe Mode see if you can go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and reselect your HD. Click the padlock to lock the preference. Then restart.
Safe Mode start - got rid of all login items (I left itunes and some "disk warrior starter") - reboot - still grey
Deselect "all" login items. Try to restart.
Is there any way to reinstall the os without system disks, or can i burn a system disk from the web into another computer and dvd...Then reinstall? (that's a stretch I know)
No, that is not possible. You must purchase a retail set of disks. You can find these on sites such as ebay or perhaps FastMac. Just make sure you purchase full retail install disks. Even that you are in Mexico you should be able to find disks online from resellers that will ship to you.
The one thing I didn't try is the instructions for the Blue Screen start up, as they were so long, and didnt describe my problem. But do you think that might help?
This I am not sure about, I would have to review the steps for startup to Blue Screen. You did say that the computer attempted to boot to Blue Screen for a few seconds, I believe, and then went to grey screen, so I am not sure if this would help.
And just in case, if you have any peripherals connected make sure they are disconnected when rebooting.
hopefully someone else here may have suggestions for your to try beyond these,
    LS

  • Stuck at Grey Screen Tried everything I could think of, still nothing.

I think I know what caused the problem, but at the moment I haven't been able to fix it. This first started after I installed quicktime. Naturally I restarted after it installed and I have been stuck at this grey screen ever since. I've tried running fsck, I've tried using the Leopard disk and I've gone in and used the verify disk and it says "The Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK". It's the disk permissions thats giving me trouble. It wont let me verify disk permissions, it gets stuck and just keeps going. So, in turn it won't let me repair disk permissions because it first has to verify them and that is where it gets stuck. I should add that I went in and tried to remove QuickTime Player.app from the applications directory and it didn't let me, I'm not sure if I was typing it in wrong but it just won't work. Can anyone help me?

Thanks. You actually have been a lot of help to me. Although nothing is working yet. I have come up with an idea that might work. If it doesn't I'm just going to have to reinstall Leopard on top of all my files. The most important files such my music, videos, and family photos. I might be able to retrieve from my iPod. I have the school documents from this semester on a usb drive. And although I would really like to keep my work from past semesters it isn't really necessary. The applications I can track down and reinstall no problem. Thanks so much for your help. I'll let you know how everything works out.

  • Upgrade eMAc using Kingston 1GB PC3200 400Mhz

    Hello guys
Just want to get some clarifications. Is it possible for me to upgrade my eMac G4 1.25Ghz using kingston 1GB PC3200 400Mhz memory. i have two stick in my collection after upgrading my office pc with higher one.
    thanks

I should probably clarify the "high-density" issue. High-density RAM is common in peecees and pack more RAM into fewer components. Example: a high-density RAM module may have only eight black chips; low-density would have 16 for a module of the same capacity.
When certain high-density RAM modules are installed in a Mac requiring low-density RAM, it shows up as exactly half its rated capacity.
So that's why it's the RAM density and not its speed )PC3200) that is at play in your situation.

    Spill Cleaning
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
