EMac 800: Major crash, some fixed, still no video

I usually leave my eMac 800 on but asleep when I'm not using it. The computer is plugged into a UPS with good surge protection, so short power failures don't affect it. Ordinarily it has only a USB printer (which is powered off when I'm not actively printing); the USB keyboard; and an ordinary telephone line (also run through the surge protector) plugged in.
Yesterday, I found it shut down, and it would not power back up--no response at all when I pressed the power button. After perusing this forum, I unplugged it, disconnected all cords and peripherals, took off the bottom panel, discharged static, and pressed the PMU button. I put everything back together, plugged it back in, and tried to turn it on. The power light on the front came on, but then it made a sound like, "Pff Pff Pff Errrrrr," and it cut off again, not to be revived. So today, I bought a new battery, which I installed. I reset the PMU again, reassembled all, and tried to start up. This time, I got all the right lights and happy chimes, and the fans and HD spun to life, but the screen remained dead blank. I've tried resetting the PRAM and booting from my install CD, but the screen simply isn't responding. I was very careful moving and upending the machine, and I was also very careful not to touch anything inside except the PMU button and the battery casing as necessary.
I suspect the screen is Really Most Sincerely Dead, but I'd appreciate any other strategies anyone might have to offer.

It seems odd that the monitor would die just at this point in time. No promises, but there are a few more possibilities:
- Pull out the plug, uninstall the RAM, and replace with the original RAM (if it's been changed). If the monitor comes to life.
- Check this cool link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300537
- Last resort: logic board replacement. Kind of expensive.

  • Major hardware crash -- cause/fix?

Hi, this is sent via PC since my faithful B & W has majorly crashed. I rarely use the PC, the Mac is #1.
    OS: X.3.9
    Mac: unchanged gen 2 B&W 400 MHz.
Monitor: new Sceptre 19" widescreen, ~1200x900, 60 Hz.
Description: Mac boots in verbose mode. The apple & grey background briefly appear (as always) then the BSD bootscript scrolls by.
-This time, the background stays partly in place(instead of disappearing normally), broken in large rectangular chunks.
-Boot freezes at the point after the kernel version appears ("Darwin kernel version 7.0.0"); next line is " wed sep 24 15:48:39 PDT 2003 [I presume the odd date/time is burned into the instruction set & is unrelated]; root:xnu/xnu-517.obj~1 release_PPC "
-The cursor instantly puts itself a few lines down but this doesn't matter since the B&W now only can be unplugged, it is completely frozen.
-this behavior occurs with only the CD connected, even if the hard drive is disconnected. So I think it's a hardware problem, not the hard drive itself or corrupt OS. (& I repaired disk permissions yesterday, booting from the panther CD).
-Yesterday, the mac seemed to have trouble accessing the hard drive, I could hear something spinning & spinning, the blue spinning wheel appeared & stuck there, I had to reboot. So I repaired permissions as stated, and turned off screen saving, and this seemed to fix the problem till this a.m.
-Is this a damaged NVRAM (or wherever the boot instructions come from)? Can this be simply desoldered/replaced if so?
-has anyone seen this problem & its likely cause, & if fixable?
    Thank you.

If it boots successfully from a panther CD and allows you to run Disk utility and repair Disk and repair permissions, all without crashing, you have isolated the problem to your Hard Drive. If Disk Utility did not make substantial repairs, it sound like the software image on your hard drive has been damaged, and may need to be re-installed.

  • IMac Crashing; No Fixes Working/Getting a Chance to Work

Hi, this is my first time on these forums asking a question, so forgive me if I've categorised this wrong or something.
I use my iMac nearly everyday for browsing the Internet, word prossessing, digital drawing and playing Minecraft. So, personally, I don't think it is ever being put to degree of stress because I've been doing those same tasks on it for well over a year and it has run smoothly and given me no trouble. However, two days ago, I logged in and got a finder error message, which although I found odd, I simply okayed, not really taking a note of it as I in no way expected  crashing issues to arise from it. The error code started with something like -108, which I now believe was the code -10810.
So I continued using the computer after I okayed the message, only to find that Skype (which automatically opens at login) quit unexpectedly. After clicking the "reopen" button on the report,  the Skype icon bounced once, the blue light underneath appearing for a second. After this I noticed the finder report and clicked it's "reopen" button and thought it didn't work as the report was still there, but it was in fact a second report as every time I tired to open finder, I would receive a new report in mere mili-seconds. I tried other programs such as Safari and Minecraft and they all wouldn't open. Then I went to restart the computer when I noticed the Apple icon and toolbar missing. So I shut down the computer using the power button.
On reboot, things started going crazy. Booting took a while, when it loaded the desktop, it would fade to blue for a few seconds then fade back to the desktop. After a few minutes, the dark, transparent curtain moved down the screen and the message "You have to restart your computer" appeared.
I've tried numerous times to find out the problem/fix it but nothing seems to be working. Worse, the computer either crashes/freezes at login, crashes within seconds of reaching the desktop or works fine (with noticable odd things occurring [such as the screen going blue, desktop items disappearing and then reappearing] but if I try to run things that may help fix my problems (such as software update, reinstalling OS X) the computer crashes/freezes.
    What I've tired so far:
The reset (I can't remember the name) where you detach the power cable and hold down the power button for five seconds, then reattach the cable and turn on the computer. No apparent effect.
    Safe Mode:
Worked first time, however it crashed while on the desktop on second and third use, after which I haven't used it.
    Single-User Mode for fsck:
fsck ran fine, reporting that it did alter something and I had hoped that this had fixed it, but as soon as I reached the desktop, the iMac crashed.
    Software Update:
My Internet is bad enough as it is (less than 1MB/Sec, problem with living in a rural area and being on a contract until October) so I haven't been keeping up with some updates as it takes forever to download them. However,  anytime I try to update now, the computer either crashes, won't open Software Update or freezes while it goes to install the updates.
    Disk Utility:
    Found nothing wrong.
Reinstalling Mac OSX: (Via holding down C at bootup and from the disk if I reach the desktop.)
Either the computer freezes on the Apple logo and spinning gear (which usually doesn't even appear whenever I booted up the iMac) when I hold down C, or it will freeze/crash as the computer tries to restart opening the utilities panel if I run the reinstall from the desktop.
Everytime I've tried to boot the computer today (day three) has resulted in the computer staying on the Apple logo and spinning gear. So without going any further, I decided to ask this to the community because nothing seems to be working, worse being the fact that I'm just on my holidays from University and I'm pretty much lost without the computer
As for the iMac's details I'm really not sure since I generally use the "About this Mac..." feature which I can't get to now. Although I think the only important bits is that it is running on OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with no external hard drives.
I'd really appretiate any help, thanks
    Aletonum

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

It's important to understand what traits are and what they're not:
Traits are not intended to be generically extensible:  there's a fixed set within the framework (although we may add additional traits in the future, to support new Flash/FMS capabilities).  We experimented with making them fully extensible, but it turned out to be not worth the cost, particularly since there shouldn't be that many traits in a media system.
Traits represent fundamental characteristics or capabilities of the media in its context.  For example, some media is playable (videos), other media is not (images).
A trait cannot apply to all media types.  If it could, then there would be no reason to model it as a trait, instead we would model it as part of the MediaElement.  Metadata is a good example of this, in that any MediaElement might have some metadata associated with it, so it wouldn't make sense to make metadata a trait.  Similarly, any MediaElement has the ability to go into fullscreen mode, so I wouldn't model the ability to go fullscreen as a trait.
On a semi-related note, I'm often asked (inside Adobe and elsewhere) for a technical overview of OSMF.  I've posted the slides that I use for this purpose here:
    https://sourceforge.net/adobe/osmf/wiki/_discuss/thread/d6c3d719/1962/attachment/OSMF%20Ar chitectural%20Building%20Blocks.pdf
The slides cover the fundamental building blocks of OSMF, things you are likely to use over and over if you're building complex media experiences.  They might shed some light on which different parts of OSMF should be used in which situations.

  • How do you fix playback quality for still image video on Adobe Premiere Elements 10?

Hi there, I'm a new editor, and am still wanting to make my first awesome video. I find that when I do a still motion video all quality is very bad, and a little blurry. I asked that question and someone told me to fix the playback quality and I do not know how to fix that. If you can answer my question, please also give me the instructions too.

  • Vista - Sleep FINALLY fixed, still annoying Random Shutdowns

Ok, they FINALLY fixed it so the Mac Pro wakes from sleep in Vista RC1 with the recent EFI update, now they need to fix the Random Shutdowns. These occur as if you were telling your system to shutdown, I do not suspect the power supply because it is not an abrupt power loss, it gracefully shuts down, but of-course is annoying as h3ll...
Here's looking forward to the Leopard/Vista releases when all of this should be worked out!
    SH
Does Vista RC2 run any better? Have better Bluetooth support?

... well... that was really a (slap in face) help ??
I never tried sleep or hibernate, but I read the latest RTM had some fixes in there regarding better support now for laptops and sleep.
Ignorance is bliss perhaps? or, it is a mixed world? or, there is still software that is not available...
How about, curiosity? that's always been man's greatest strength, too.
Being able to run Windows Vista on Mac Pro must be something even Apple engineers are keep to do and improve on.
Every release for OS X takes a couple updates to be "ready" for use. Long-term that has meant 2-3 updates for the last three+ releases, and each release meant more work for everyone, developer and end user, while "rules" change and hardware and software has to be updated to accommodate those changes. Even good changes are still costly, and some have been costly.
I've lived and survived FIVE releases, $600+ for one machine license, and over a year of that was "1.0" issues all over again. And the same story will get played out next year, too, bet on it.
Some people like to explore linux and alternatives. I have, and while I've never felt linux offered the desktop experience I want, I thought SuSE 6.4 gave OS 8/9 a real run for the money at the time.
    Things to Love/Hate about Vista
I can now help my Dad 1200 miles away with his PC Windows w/o needing a PC. I can run multiple VMs. One computer, multiple OSs. VMware, Parallels, CrossOver, as well as native installs.
And maybe, just maybe, a more secure desktop PC will help everyone. However, a really good balanced review might actually be one from ComputerWorld - Vista may make Mac converts of IT folks!
IT folks can support XP/Vista and be running Mac OS X

  • EMac 800 mhz, OS 10

I am preparing an emac 800 mhz for resale, and wiped the hard drive.  I can only get OS9 to reinstall on the system.  When I try to install OS 10.2, with the origonal disks that came with the computer, it goes into a kernel panic when I run the install process.  I am stuck at this point.  I had this machine running 10.3 connecting wirelessly a few months ago.  Still a decent machine and would love to get a few bucks out of it if I could get it back up to OS 10.  Any ideas on what to do or try?  Thanks

      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • How to allow some fixed extension go in from outside to inside but not allow go from inside to outside

how to allow some fixed extension go in from outside to inside but not allow go from inside to outside
for example, allow JPEG, MOV, AVI data flow from outside to inside
but not allow JPEG, MOV, AVI files access or upload or get by outside, in another words not from inside to outside
    how to configure?

    Hi,
The ZBF link sent earlier show how we can inspect URI in http request
    parameter-map type regex uri_regex_cm
       pattern “.*cmd.exe”
    class-map type inspect http uri_check_cm
       match request uri regex uri_regex_cm
ZBf is the feature on Cisco routers and ASA though concepts are little same but works differently. However it is important that you can be more granular with the protocol (layer 7) inspection only. Like on ASA if you will try to restrict .exe file from a p2p application that won't be possible, But on router you have some application for p2p in NBAR and you can use it file filtering. Please check configuartion example for both devices.
    Thanks

I created one apple I'd when I started using the iPad.  After some days, I had to create a new apple id
as there was some problem with the first one. Now at some places still my old apple Id is appearing.  Pls adv how I change this to my new apple Id.

Anything you downloaded with the first Apple Id will forever be tied to it, and will always require it to update.
The question here is, why did you think you needed to create a new Apple ID? What was the problem with the first one?
To get rid of th old one, you'll need to delete everything you downloaded with it, and then sign out of the ID in several places around the iPad.
    Go to Settings->iTunes & App Stores->Apple ID->Sign out.
Repeat the process, for Facetime, Messages, Mail and any other App you need to sign out of.

  • Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

The procedures below are for "moving" your library but as long as you don't delete it from your internal drive you are basically backing up.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Simple answer:  Copy your whole iTunes folder to the external drive.  For subsequent backups you might want to learn about cloning and using a tool that only does incremental backups of recently changed items rather than copying all your files each time.

  • My hard drive crashed and i still have my music on my ipod?help??

i want to put my music in my mytunes library because i formatted my hard drive but still have a copy of all my music on my ipod. how do i transfer it into the empty harddrive and new library?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only

    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
