EMac 800 mhz, OS 10

I am preparing an emac 800 mhz for resale, and wiped the hard drive.  I can only get OS9 to reinstall on the system.  When I try to install OS 10.2, with the origonal disks that came with the computer, it goes into a kernel panic when I run the install process.  I am stuck at this point.  I had this machine running 10.3 connecting wirelessly a few months ago.  Still a decent machine and would love to get a few bucks out of it if I could get it back up to OS 10.  Any ideas on what to do or try?  Thanks

  1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
   2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
   3. Click the Erase tab.
   4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
   5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
   6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • EMac G4 800 MHz and Tiger (Retail)

I am struggling to get Tiger installed on an eMac G4 800 MHz for my school district. We had purchased the Family Pack for Tiger so these are genuine retail, non-hardware specific DVD's.
I have installed Tiger in the past on my Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz and had no issues.
For the eMac I have installed it using the following methods:
From the DVD-ROM drive with the media,
From a USB External DVD-ROM which had been selected as the startup disk,
From a FireWire 400 HD that had the Tiger CD's restored to
Each of them fails at some point early in the installation. It gives the following in the log:
    "BomFileError 9: Bad file descriptor"
This happens when it's trying to install the Base System Part 1.
I have 128 MB of RAM that it came with along with a stick of 512 MB which was Apple Certified. I have even tried installing after taking out that 512 MB stick and had no luck.
I have also tried looking through these discussions and my good friend Google.com and have not come up with any solutions. Is this a known issues or am I just having bad luck?
I appreciate any time given to help on my issue.

    Arrgh! It was the RAM!
I took out a stick of 512 MB RAM from another eMac and put it in the one I was working on to install Tiger (by itself).
    Now it's installing smoothly.
FYI to anyone in the future having install woes...
    Try swapping the RAM.
Whew...my faith in Apple has not been broken

  • 800 Mhz won't boot

We had an 800 Mhz emac that was sleeping when the power went out here at school. When the power came back on, the computer was still in sleep mode and would not wake up. After getting it shut down, it will not reboot. When powered on, you can hear the fan running, but nothing else. It will not boot from a CD, firewire drive, or in Target mode. No external video either. I have left it sit unplugged overnight, zapped the PRAM, reseated the RAM, replaced the CMOS battery, and reset the button inside. There is no airport card so that isn't the problem. Attempting to reset Open Firmware was done blind since there is no video (not even a gray screen). AppleCare expired in June. At first I immediately thought HD failure, but if that is the case, it should at least try to boot up, shouldn't it?. Any ideas? The secretary needs her computer back. Thanks

If the fan is powering up, it's not the switching power supply latching up, and you've already tried pulling the power cord from the side of the eMac for at least 30 minutes after unplugging all peripherals (that's how I read your "left it sit unplugged overnight"). You've already tried the known troubleshooting steps, including checking for video from the miniVGA out port, target disk mode, and external/CD drive bootup.
Does the power LED on the fron of the eMac come on? When you inserted the CD, did you hear or feel the disc spinning?
When you zapped the PRAM, did you hear any tones from the Mac?
About the only thing you haven't mentioned trying is replacing the eMac's keyboard/mouse with a known-good one from another USB Mac. I've never heard of a power outage damaging a keyboard (power surge, yes, but not outage), and if the USB ports had latched up, leaving the eMac unplugged overnight should've reset them, but that's about the only thing left you haven't already tried.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading Imac g4 flat panel 800 mhz

I decided to post this information here because a lot of people are wondering how do i go about upgrading a macintosh imac g4 A.K.A Ilamp as it is known in the mac community.
Well this tutorial will walk you through a basic configuration that i recently did that seem's to work very well.
    Item's you will need.
    1. mac os x tiger 10.4
    2. A external cd-rom/dvd-rom
    3. a 7200 rpm 250 gig hard drive
    4. 1 stick 512 meg's pc133 sdram
    5. 1 stick 512 meg's pc133 so-dimm for laptop memory slot at base of imac
    6. a new and faster dvd-drive (i used a light scribe)
So after installing all of the hardware in my imac.
I ran into a problem it has to do with the imac firmware update for mac os x tiger to be installed..
The built in dvd-drive wouldn't eject i thought it was a bad drive come to find out the drive won't eject without a os on the machine.
so i needed a external usb/firewire cd/dvd-drive to boot the tiger installation and install tiger well after installing tiger from the external cd/dvd-drive i noticed the drive ejected and worked fine but i knew that if i wanted to burn anything i would need to install a new drive.
so i purchased a new lightscribe drive.
    installed it.
after that my system specs are
    Imac g4 800 mhz
    1 gig ram
    250 gig hard drive
    52x lightscribe DVD
    running mac os x 10.4.11
it really just depends on how much you want to spend to upgrade i found that this configuration works great for media streaming.

what kind of HD did you get for it? I'm still waiting on buying the right one. version that can be installed in these older lamp macs of ours. I know it needs to be an IDE drive. Is that the same as an ATA drive? i know that the new systems now are SATA.i happened to call apple one day and they said that my G4 flat panel uses ATA-6 drives. i do a search for those drives on newegg.com and all that comes up are notebook drives. so what kind of HD do i get?

  • Will 800 MHZ Quicksilver USB port read a 2.0 USB Lacie Hard Drive?

    Hello everyone
I have an 800 MHZ Quicksilver, and was wondering if it can read (adequately), either a USB 2.0, or Fire Wire conected Lacie external Hard Drive?
I'm going to install the 1.2 Upgrade Processor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST3400620AS/
But I don't think this upgrade effects the speed of the USB Ports?
I also installed a Multiport Fire Wire PCI card, but through this card, I get latency problems in regard to audio. It's not as fast as the built-in Fire Wire Port.
    Thanx
    Mike

    Hello Allan
    Thanx for the tip
Do you have the same system that I have?
    Is this your card:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegro_usb2.html
If so, it seems to actually make up for (adjust or boost), the system's USB speed capability
And maybe I should pick up one of these too?

  • Can a 800 Mhz iMac support the latest software?

    Hello all,
I'm looking to buy an iMac and I'd like to know how well it can support latest software. The processor is 800 Mhz with 1 Gb of RAM, and I plan to use it only for work, so I'll only be running Safari and iWork '08. I'll also be using Leopard on it. Can someone tell me if this will be sufficient processing speed for those apps?
    Thanks.

The latest OS 10.4.10 (and Safari) will work just find on that iMac.
The iLife '08 system requirements indicates that only the new iMovie is not compatible with your iMac:
iMove requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster).
Apple has not announced the hardware requirements of Leopard so no one knows for sure.

  • AirPort with early Imac PowerPC G4 800 MHz

I have an early model flat panel iMac, (with no AirPort card), which I intend to keep using for some years yet - alongside a new iMac or MacBook I plan to get later this year.
Now I have just bought an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express (thru Apple Store).
I thought to hook the Extreme via Ethernet to the iMac, and the Express to my D-Link ADSL Router.
As soon as I tell the Extreme to use Ethernet to connect to the iMac, well that seems to kill the wireless side of things in the Extreme, so it can't talk with the Express.
I have looked thru Apple / Support / Discussions, searched on << AirPort Express AND AirPort Extreme AND 800 MHz PowerPC G4 Imac >> with no success. Even artnum=107454 did not seem to help.
Help please - is it possible to get Airport running with this old imac, with no AirPort card, with the Airport items I have just bought? Is my best bet to try and pick up an early Airport card, (before APExtreme card came out)?
    RipVanWinkle

I've spent all day trying to get that "trick" to work and it kept failing giving me the message:
+The Installer could not validate the contents of the Base System package. Contact the software manufacturer for assitance+
I lost all the contents of my hard drive (no prob I backup externally), then later the HD failed to appear at all as a bootable or startup option, then when trying to restart I would get the black root screen ...
(my extetnal is a bootable backup)
Fine, I pulled out Tiger, clean installed. Turned right back around and tried the workaround again. I'm typing this after getting the same error message for the third time. I'm sitting right here watching Tiger install the Base System, so why can't Leopard find it? Is there something I can do on the firmware page to help it find the BS when I'm also convincing my computer that it's actually an 867?
I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be able to use Leopard on my 2002 Dual 800 Quicksilver when I bought it. I wish I did. I can't get the installer to work. So if anyone has any ideas or solutions?
I'm about to just hang with Tiger 'cause I'm not buying a new computer. I can't keep installing Tiger then Leopard, Tiger then Leopard. I need to use my computer.

  • Can't get PowerBook G4 Titanium 800 MHz to run Leopard 10.5?

I recently bought a PowerBook G4 Titanium 800 MHz A1001 model and I want to install Leopard (10.5) on it.
I have tried both of the "faking out the leopard installation" http://lowendmac.com/osx/leopard/openfirmware.html but it doesn't want to work for me.
    What else can I try?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello,
To help the op with this.. I tried to install Leopard on my G4 Pismo(Was G3 500) just for giggles.. and by using firewire target disk mode or FTDM.. it did install and boot up.. so yes, I can confirm that this does work.

  • Connect a Microtek ScanMaker X6 EL scanner to iMac PowerPC G-4, 800 MHz?

I have a Microtek ScanMaker X6 EL flatbed scanner which I want to connect and use with my iMac PowerPC G-4, 800 MHz computer. Since this scanner is no longer supported by Microtek, their Tech Support advised that I should try the software program VueScan (www.hamrick.com) to operate the scanner with Mac OS X, v. 10.4.11. They suggested I connect the SCSI terminated scanner to my iMac FireWire port via a Ratoc FireWire-UltraSCSI Converter (FR1SX) and FireWire IEEE 1394 cable. Unfortunately, the Ratoc FW-SCSI Converter requires a 50 pin Female SCSI terminal. My scanner has a 25 pin Female SCSI terminal, with a SCSI 25 pin Male - SCSI 25 pin Male connecting cable. This necessitates purchasing a SCSI 25 pin - 50 pin adapter, a SCSI 50 pin Male - SCSI 50 pin Female adapter, an AC-DC adapter to power the Ratoc FR1SX Converter, and the FireWire IEEE 1394 cable. Once the physical connection is made, if the trial VueScan software works with this connection/scanner, the VueScan software will have to be purchased. The estimated total cost of this hardware/software bundle is $200+. Is there a simpler, less costly way to connect and operate the Microtek ScanMaker X6 EL scanner with the iMac computer under Mac OS X, v.10.4.11? Will the listed hardware/software above work? Any other suggestions, other than purchase a "new, modern" scanner and start over?

jaxjt, I have the same scanner connected to my G5 tower running Mac OX 10.4.11. I've been using VueScan for some time through an Adaptec SCSI card, but now all of a sudden my OS doesn't recognize the scanner, although it does appear to recognize the card. Of course, Adaptec no longer supports the card with new drivers, either.
Like you, I want to keep using my ScanMaker X6 EL, but the struggle to keep obsolete SCSI gear in my setup is becoming trying. I too am considering the Ratoc FireWire-UltraSCSI converter, or throwing it all away and getting a new scanner (serious bummer).
Unfortunately, I can't help you with your problem right now, but perhaps it helps you to know that someone else has the same problem too. I'll certainly post if I learn something new!

  • Screen spanning emac 700 MHz

    Hello all,
I presume this is a quite stupid question, but here goes; is it possible to do screen spanning with a 700 MHz eMac? I've got a Iiyama Vision Mater Pro 455 here - and I'd like to span the screen instead of mirror it completely. That way I can edit much more easily with FCP.
Is there any way to do this through software? (I tried Screen Spanning Doctor, but they've excluded the 700 MHz) Or do I need to upgrade the hardware - if so, what hardware?
    Thanks a bunch everybody!
    eMac 700 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    it doesn't work with a 700 MHz.
So I guess if it isn't possible I need to upgrade the hardware. Is this possible?
Sorry, I missed that you'd already tried it; apologies. But if Screen Spanning Doctor doesn't work, you may be out of luck. It's not possible to upgrade the video chip in your eMac, and I don't think a later-model eMac logic board would fit in your eMac's case, though I can't say for sure. Even if it is possible, it's probably not going to be cost-effective. Logic boards for 1GHz eMacs are going for over $300.00 US on the sites I've found that carry them, and you could probably buy an entire 1Ghz eMac for not much more, particularly if you sell yours and apply the proceed toward the purchase of the later-model unit.

  • IPod Touch 32 GB and iMac G4 800 Mhz

Will an iPod Touch successfully connect and function properly with an iMac G4 800 Mhz. I need it to work with no problem. I know it requires a USB 2.0, but it only has 1.0 or 1.1 I believe. Thanks! Please only post with experience regarding this configuration. I already know the..."Well, yeah it will connect and run a little slower". I know this, but is it damaging the either unit???

You are correct, it will run slower, but also be advised if you have a lot of music you will have to sync it a little at a time, and if you update it, and it is a large update (say like the upcoming version 2.0) it will probably not update on your machine. Same problem with both; the USB chain will timeout.

Judging by the numerous posts on here, there is a very good chance that the computer will not boot up.

  • Hi, I have recently got myself a second hand computer MAC OS X Version 10.4.11,Processor 800 MHz PowerPC G4. Have only used windows before. Unfortunately I managed to uninstall Adobe but now can't seem to reinstall as this an older computer

Hi, I have recently got myself a second hand computer  MAC OS X Version 10.4.11,Processor 800 MHz PowerPC G4. Have only used windows before. Unfortunately I managed to uninstall Adobe but now can't seem to reinstall as this an older computer and is not compatible with the new versions. Sorry to sound thick but really have never used Apple before. Would really appreciate any help at all. Thanks..

Windows or apple it makes no difference, if you don't have the install discs you can't install.
Did you buy the machine with Adobe (you don't say what adobe program you're talking about) installed? If so the vendor should have given you the discs or else it's technically a pirated copy. If you're talking about acrobat (which is free) then you should be able to find older versions on the adobe site.

  • G4 Dual 800 MHz - Upgrade capable from 10.3.9 to 10.5.6 Leopard?

I have seen a few similar questions to this topic but not exactly what I'm after so sorry if I am being redundant. I have a G4 (Quicksilver, I believe) dual 800 Mhz processer with 1GB SDRAM. Will this support an upgrade of the OS from 10.3.9 directly to 10.5.6? I'm mostly worried about speed and performance. My specs appear below. Thanks in advance for your advice!
    *Hardware Overview:*
    Machine Model: Power Mac G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB

    *System Software Overview:*
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)

Your computer does not meet the system requirements for Leopard. An 867 MHz or faster processor is required (single CPU - dual doesn't count.)

  • 800 MHz RAM in MacBook Pro (2008)

    Good afternoon.
A question related to an early discussion: I've got a 2008 MacBook Pro with 667MHz RAM.
I noticed the the MacBook Pro has a Data Bus Speed of 800 Mhz. Is this related to RAM? Can I put 800MHz RAM in this computer and would it make any difference?
    Cheers,
    BurntMonkey

+Can I put 800MHz RAM in this computer and would it make any difference?+
Yes you can but *only if it is 200-pin DDR2 RAM*. No it will not make any difference in performance since the 800MHz bus is already slower than the specified 667MHz RAM, which is double data rate RAM; i.e. the RAM is not the bottleneck.
