EMac and Sony MiniDV

Hi there,
Can anyone tell me why my eMac won't find the firewire connected (either port) Sony MiniDV Handycam?
I connect it all as described (MiniDV set to playback - connected through firewire cable to eMac) and nothing...
The screen on the Handycam blinks every 3 seconds and shows the DV in signal (I actually want DV out) - but nothing else.
It all works fine if I connect it to my IBM Notebook via another cable. Am I missing a setting? Or could my cable / firewire ports be cactus?
Cheers

Do you have any other Firewire devices? To confirm the impression I got from your post, you're attempting to connect directly to the eMac, and not through a Firewire hub, right?
With nothing attached to the Firewire ports, open System Profiler (in Applications/ Utilities) and check that the Firewire bus itself shows up. If it doesn't, reset the eMac's Firewire bus triple fuses (they can be tripped and latched by momentary power glitches) by removing all peripherals other than the Apple USB keyboard and mouse, then removing the power cord from the side of the eMac (to remove the trickle current drawn by modern electronics even when nominally off) and waiting 15+ minutes. Then reattach the power cord only and start up the Mac. Check System Profiler again and confirm that the Firewire bus is recognized. Reattach peripherals (the MiniDV camera) one at a time, checking System Profiler after each to confirm the addition is recognized.
Let's not overlook the too-obvious either; check the Finder's preferences and make sure the "show these items on the desktop" boxes are checked.

  • Sony miniDV camera not being recognized by emac

Can somebody help? My sony miniDV DCR-TRV11E has worked fine with imovie 4 with a firewire connection. Now when I open imovie it tells me no camera is connected. Also, it's not appearing in the system profiler. Thinking it was a dodgy firewire cable I bought a new one - but no change. Have done the firewire reset by turning computer off and pulling all plugs out of socket, still no change. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your help Lennart.
I discovered the problem is the firewire port on the camera. Tried my old cable with my brother's camera and it worked fine. It still didn't show up in the system profiler though. Am now hoping it's not going to cost the earth to be repaired.

  • Sony miniDV versus Canon miniDV

I've read a few times on this forum that Sony miniDV cameras will be recognized by iMovie 08 even if they are the "second" firewire device attached to a Mac. In other words, you can have an external firewire hard drive attached and then attach your Sony camera and it will be recognized.
Then, I've read where a Canon miniDV camera will not behave this way. With a Canon camera, you must detach all other firewire devices and have only the Canon camera as the single firewire device attached to you Mac in order for the Canon miniDV camera to be recognized.
Does anyone know the real story here or have any actual experience with this? I would like to buy a new Canon camera, but I have an external firewire drive attached and that is where my Events are stored. So, obviously detaching my Events firewire drive isn't desirable.
I presently have an old Sony Digital8 firewire camera and it works without detaching my firewire drive.
I appreciate you help and advice.

I have a Canon HV30 attached with a firewire& my time machine also attached with the other firewire port. IMovie recognizes the HV 30 & so does FCE. Hope that help. bjt

  • HT2498 I connected a Sony miniDV camcorder ....

I connected a Sony miniDV camcorder on firewire port of a iMac late 2009 and Mavericks 10.9.2. Result: the iMac don't see the camera (I tested it whit iMovie 9 and 10).
The same connection whit Snow Leopard works fine. Why ??

    Hi
May be You find help in my old list ?
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
Is the dip-switches set right ?
Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    Try resetting it
    Connections
Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    White MacBooks - don't
    MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Screen Saver - OFF
    Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • IMovies see Sony MiniDV, FCP doesn't

    Hi,
I have a Sony miniDV camcorder with firewire. When I hook it up IMovies, it is very happy and I can capture. But on FCP I cannot get any deck although i use non-controllable device option.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks

Try using the Easy Setup DV PAL or NTSC (your video standard) before starting your Project.
Make sure the camera is in VCR mode before capturing.

  • Why won't Sony MiniDV cameras work on a Imac 17 isight?

Everyone has always said they will, BUT every Sony miniDV I reseach says USB connectivity and ilink (what ever that is) and no mention of a firewire connection at all. They don't even include a firewire cable. I'm not getting some info that I really need before I purchase on of these. I like Sony but I don't want to make a mistake. All I want to do is make movies, edit them on my iMac 17 isight (with a program that came with it - which program do I use?). Then just burn the rascal to a DVD. Any helpers out ther?

    Hello msgraphik,
did you actually try one? i have two sony cameras and they connect perfectly well.
i think you have a misunderstanding here: sony calls the firewire connection iLink ... don't ask me why.
i don't know if sony includes a firewire cable, but hey ... 5$ for a cable is not that much.
    hope this helps

  • IMac G5 (10.3.9) and Sony Handycam (w/ Hard Drive)

I am trying to purchase a camcorder and do not know which one to get. Sony tells me that none of their dvd or hard drive camcorders are compatible with Mac and would need a third-party software for it to work, however, a friend of mine has an older Sony Handycam (with tapes) and says it works perfectly with iMove and has never had to load any additional software. Does anyone know if the Sony Handycam (hard drive) will work without using pixela software? Or can anyone give me a good camcorder recommendation ... I know that Canon has some models that are compatible with Mac but I don't know which one to buy. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Any camcorder that records on media other than miniDV tape will not interface with the mac in a way that allows you to download the file to edit. That is why the Sony (or any other camcorder) the records on DVD disks don't work. As for brands and recommendations, Sony miniDV tape cameras come highly recommended although other brands also have their fans. You should look at any reputable brand and decide based on $$$ and your personal preference according to needs. But, you need to make sure it records on miniDV tape.
A couple of other notes: The camera needs to have a FireWire interface. And some Canon cameras will only connect via FireWire if no other FireWire devices are connected to your Mac.
Also, you might want to switch your inquiries on this matter to the forums on iMovie and iDVD. Lots of respondents there that have far more expertise than me.

Is this music purchased back in DRM days? I don't actually have any iTunes music so I can't test with my iTunes 7.5, but I know that without iTunes 10 you cannot even connect to the store anymore.  I wouldn't think that would require an active connection to the store all the time, otherwise how could you play music on a computer in the middle of nowhere?  Did you do something to trigger iTunes suddenly wanting to connect and check on machine authorization?

  • Capturing Issues using FCP 7 and Sony HVRZ7U

    I am using FCP 7.0.3
On a Mac Book Pro OS 10.5.8
With 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo processor
I am capturing HD tapes to a WD 2TB external drive.
I am using the Sony HVRZ7U as my playback deck All HD footage was shot on Sony HVRZ7U and Sony HDRFX1.
I have my capture settings set to HDV apple pro res 4222
    A. I have noticed that FCP is not capturing in “real time” is this due to the hi res capturing setting? and do I need to let FCP finish process footage even though tape is done with capture? (This usualy adds another 20mins per 1 hr off footage) Is there something I can do to maintain high quality and not have to wait for FCP to be behind capture?
    B. Having already gone through aprox 20+ tapes I have come across a few tapes that wont capture? is this due to the fact that not all tapes came from the same camera source? or is it perhaps a bad tape? or something in FCP that went buggy? i tried the usual dumping my preference files, but still fcp keeps frezzing on the capture and then not saving any of the file. I tired to capture smaller portions of tape but still no mater where on tape I try to capture I get same problem

    A. Yes and yes. Only by increasing the speed of the processor.
    B. Maybe because of the different camera types, what cameras are they? It could be a bad tape. Can you view it playing back in your camera?

  • 2003 eMac and 23inches new Apple display compatible?

I just got a new display (23in Apple) and I would like to plug it in my eMac
which only seems to have a VGA oulet,
Does anyone know of an adaptor that could do the trick?
Couldn't see any on the Mac online store.
Thanks a million for any suggestion.
    Francis

There are VGA to DVI converters, but they run about $300.00 US (you can find one such here). And your eMac doesn't support extended desktop, only mirroring, so unless you install a firmware hack (which you use strictly at your own risk), you would get the same picture at the same resolution as on your eMac's screen. Even with the hack, I'm not sure if the eMac would support the 23" LCD's resolution.
So it's up to you whether or not it's worth it. You could probably sell your eMac and combine that with the cost of the converter and buy a new Mac mini which would support that monitor directly.

for usage of iMHD, you need a firewire connection (Sony lingo: iLink)
    set camera to Play
in iM, you should now be allowed to select the iSight or camcorder as input device..
