EMAC COMBO DRIVE

My old eMac DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive has failed and the door and tray will not open. Need help on opening door and finding replacement drive?

Hi, welcome to discussions.
Firstly when you power up your eMac from cold (switch on) try holding your mouse button down (around 15 secs ) to see if the optical drive door opens?

  • EMac Combo drive for a DVD burner ( superdrive)

Hi . I have purchased a used eMac 1 ghz . it has a stock combo drive . i burn a lot of DVDs .I have a external plextor DVD burner ( super drive ) and i was woundering if it would fit in the eMac ? do i need to remove the little bezel at the end of the tray ? I have always owned a older Slower G3 type mac , this will be my fastest mac i would ever have . So i want to be happy with it .
    Thank you kindly

I guess burning to external is not so bad . i have been haveing problems when OSX tryed to verifi the burn and it fails so i though putting it into the computer would resolve that . I will keep the burner in the external case if it means i have to take the top off the optical drive itself .

  • Using eMac Combo drive in a PC

    G'day All,
I have an old, old PC which I would like to install my Combo drive into. It is the Philips CDD5301. WinMe recognises the model number etc, but it does not have any CD-RW or DVD capabilities, just a bulk standard CD-Rom. I have dowloaded a copy of FlashTool P3.7.2.1 which should get it going, but I am hesitant about doing so and ending up bricking the drive. Has anyone ever used their old Mac hardware in a PC after they upgraded their Mac??

You can read the contents of CD-ROM or DVD-ROM ?
If that is OK the player is working on the PC.
Win95/98/ME/2000 have no burning and DVD player capabilities by itself.
You must use a program such as Nero Burning ROM or alike, to burn CDs and another program like VLC
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
to be able to see a DVD.

  • What causes CD's played in combo drive through iTunes to skip?

When I play an audio CD in my eMac combo drive through iTunes, just about every disc I play skips? When I play them on my home stereo CD player or my DVD player in audio mode they all play fine. What could be causing this?

    Hey Matt,
Some of my CD's have slight surface flaws, but the oversampling by the combo drive should take care of that. It does in my video DVD-in-audio-mode player and in my home stereo CD player which does 4x oversampling.
Songs in iTunes do not skip. The skipping is also not the "Max Headroom" type of digital stuh-tuh-tuh-tuttering. It is more like the audio intermittently cutting in and out.
I did some more troubleshooting and discovered that part of the problem was a loose connector. The 3.5mm plug from my external speaker system was not making good contact with the audio out port on my Mac.
The other part of the problem I discovered was that in one of the CD's I was listening to the recording has a sampled vinyl LP in it. The original LP had slightly audible surface scratches on it, and the original analog tape studio recording had dropouts in it. It just sounds real different when played on my Mac through my Klipsch speakers. Here's to that old audio engineering trick where the recording studio mixdown is done through Yamaha studio monitors with the idea that if the engineer can make Yamaha studio monitors sound good, the recording will sound good on everything else. The audio engineer on the Cinematic Orchestra CD titled Every Day apparently didn't use Yamaha nearfield studio monitors
After jiggling the audio connector, Genesis' Selling England by the Pound sounds fantastic once again. Thanks for your input, it helped point me in the right direction. I'll also try cleaning the contacts on my Mac's audio out port with some contact cleaner.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi Steve,
No-one bothers with Combos these days as Superdrives (DVD burning) are quite cheap.
I replaced in my eMac a Combo, originally a Pioneer drive with a Pioneer Super DVD 109 8X DVD-R/RW drive from OWC. It works great.
The current model is a DVR - 115 D but is essentially the same and would suit your model.
    https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/powermac/
    Installing it was easy.
Remove the shell, and carefully disconnect the power wire.
Remove the screws that hold the optical drive, slide it out and install the new one.
    No software drivers are needed.

Most of the readers of the "Older Hardware Products" section have some familiarity with products pre-1997. Your eMac is positively modern by comparison.
You would get more readers, and therefore be more likely to get better advice, on the eMac forums:

  • IMac combo drive extremely loud out of the box

Well our new iMac 17" just arrived and it is gorgeous. When I put in the CD to install Office there was this VERY loud whirring that didn't stop until I completed the installation and removed the CD. I put in another CD and it did this for several seconds and then quieted down. Is this normal?
    Thanks in advance

  • Strange behavior with combo drive...

I've had my powerbook for a few years without any problems other than some slight noise from the secondary fan which I replaced a few weeks ago without any difficulty. The other day I noticed my powerbook froze up on me. I had no choice but to depress the power button to restart it. Force quitting would not work on the open apps or to relaunch the finder. After restarting I had the same problem. This happened twice. I tried resetting the pram and also followed the instructions on this post: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:
    1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
    2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
    3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)
Step 2 seemed to do the trick for me but I just tried to insert a blank CD-R into the drive but it ejects itself after a minute. I can hear the drive operating but the CD-R ejects itself. I cannot figure out while this occurs. I tried to insert a CD with data and the drive reads the CD without any problems and does not eject itself. It also does it with a blank DVD-R. What gives???
If anyone has any suggestions to help I would really appreciate it.

If you say that you have a combo drive, then the drive should be ejecting the DVD-R. If it's supposed to burn DVD's then that's definitely a problem. I'm not sure about the CD-R's though. I only think that it is a drive defect and may need replacing. Sorry about that! Good luck!

  • Need to replace combo drive without electrocuting myself

I want to replace my combo drive. I've purchased the proper replacement super drive, but guys at the Apple store warned me about the danger of electrocuting myself or frying my eMac because of the stored up power in the computer. Is this a real concern?
Can anyone help me with what to do so I don't fry myself or the computer.
    Thanks,

This discharge procedure has not been required for years, and has never been for eMacs.
I beg to differ. This is from page 13 of the *eMac Service Source Repair Manual*, published by Apple in 2002:
"Warning: This product contains high voltage and a high-vacuum picture tube. To prevent
injury, always review the Service Foundations: CRT Displays course for safety information.
Whenever the rear housing of the computer is removed and before replacing a module,
    you must
    1. Discharge the CRT (shown below) and remove the anode cap.
    2. Establish an ongoing ground by using a cable with alligator clips at both ends. Connect one end to the anode aperture, and connect the other end to the metal CRT frame (as shown below).
    3. With the CRT discharged and the ongoing ground in place wear a grounding wriststrap to prevent equipment damage from static electricity
Page 77 covers replacement of the optical drive; these preliminary steps are listed:
    Preliminary Steps
Before you begin, do the following:
    • Place the computer face down on an ESD mat.
    • Remove the user access door.
    • Remove the feet.
    • Remove the rear housing.
    • Discharge the CRT.
    • Remove the fan.
    • Remove the Faraday cage.
    • Remove the digital module assembly.
    • Remove the hard drive.
    • Remove the heatsink.
    • Remove the logic board.
Now, this manual covers the original eMac model. Perhaps later models of eMac do not have the same requirements. But until such documentation from Apple can be found, I think it foolish to not follow the guidelines set out in this manual, for all eMac models.

  • How to make Combo drive read DL DVDs?

As you see the question in Subject.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ivan

The combo drive in my first eMac (700 MHz) couldn't read DL DVDs either. It could read the first layer but skipped and got hung up when it got to the 2nd layer. A trip to an Apple Store and a call to tech support revealed that the drive in question was never intended to support DL, and well, too bad.
The point is, if your friend's drive is old enough, it simply may not support DL, and no amount of software finagling will make that capability appear in the hardware. Your only options are replacing the drive or adding one via FireWire, (or USB2 if the machine supports it).

  • Combo Drive not working

My internal combo drive (tray) is not reading anything (i.e., DVDs, CDs, CD-Roms). It just acts as if nothing has been inserted. I have checked Disk Utility and only see my hard drive listed....
What are the initial steps to troubleshooting this problem?
    emac 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   17" imac (G4), 12" ibook

It sounds like the drive is dead. I don't think this will work, but it is worth a shot anyway. As JVMP said, shut everything down, but this time also unplug the power cord to the eMac so it is completely disconnected from power allowing the logic board to power completely down and reset. Leave it unplugged for a good 5 minutes so all on board capacitors discharge. Then plug back in and start up again.
Maybe, if we are lucky, something locked up and that IDE bus just needs resetting or something.

  • Combo drive or Zombie drive?

Hardly a new topic, but I am SO fed up with the Combo drive (LG) on my eMac and I'd like to replace it. It was always a bit reluctant but now at 2 years old it rarely recognises discs of any sort. It either spits them back out on repeated attempts or they just don't show on the desktop, although they play perfectly well on my dual 1.25 dual processor, mirrored doors G4. I've read several good reports of the Pioneer DVR 109 and would like to install one but there seems to be more than one version of this drive. Do I need dual layer? The Pioneer isn't listed in the reports in the xlr8yourmac reviews. Is there a definitive version of the 109 which would be the most suitable for my 1GHz eMac? Should it be set to Slave/Master? I use Toast 6. I've seen some 2nd hand 109 drives on eBay. Would a 2nd hand drive be OK?

Dual layer is only necessary if you want to use dual layer disks. What country are you in? There are various dealers that specialize in Apple compatible drives which are country specific.
I might add, the slave master setting should match the one of the drive that came with your machine. Some have reported success in cleaning the lense of a drive, but I'm not sure which ones are known to work well.
Dual layer burning allows you to burn up to 8.4 GB on a single sided disk designed to allow that kind of burning. There is also dual sided media which works on standard DVD-R drives which holds 9.4 GB total on a single disk.

  • Combo Drive failing?

    Hi
Recently, i was trying to burn a simple CD on my eMac 1.25GHz, when suddenly a window pops up saying that the communication to my drive failed. I tried again, but the same thing happened, then i tried to play a DVD, then tried to play a CD. The CD or DVD shows up on the Finder, but it doesn't do anything after that, for example, i wasn't able to play the DVD or the CD. I believe my Combo Drive might be disfunctional. So, does this mean that I have to go out and find another Combo Drive to replace it? Please help me!! Thanks
    ~Joe~
    eMac 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This might be way off base, but my daughter's eMac had similar issues with CDs and DVDs which I was unable to solve; it even occurred with an external drive. Eventually, her eMac got to where it wouldn't run at all for more than a few minutes. I then discovered the leaking capacitors and Apple eventually replaced the eMac with a brand spanking new iMac.
My guess is the drive malfunctuions were the first sign of the capacitor failure, but I cannot prove it. Your mileage may vary.

  • Combo Drive in B&W G3 or G4

I tried to find this on the Apple site, but had no luck. Does anyone know if a Combo Drive from a 1.25GHz eMac will work in either a B&W G3 or a PowerMac G4?

I suspect that it will. This site:
    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
has an online database where you can see what drives work in your machine. I used it and it worked for me. I'm certain it can help you too.

  • Combo Drive Problems

I just installed the IDE CDRW/DVD combo drive and the PowerDVD software that came with it.  Unfortunately I cannot seem to get my DVDs to play correctly.  After about 10 minutes the playback goes buggy on me.  It sort of crashes.  By that I mean the DVD will go start over at the beginning (the studio logo part).  I played the disc on two other players and it works fine.  I also tried using another disc, and I experienced the same problem.  The thing kind of resets.  Further attempts have resulted in crashes and lock ups.  I attempted playing the disc with PowerDVD and Windows Media Player.  I made sure the drive was set to DMA and I did flash the drive BIOS.  The hardware manager for the OS says the device is functioning properly.  Anybody have any suggestions?  Is this a hardware or a software issue?

Okay, I reinstalled the OS, installed WinDVD 4 and tested the discs.  So I concluded that the problem was solved by reinstalling the OS.  I assumed it would be safe to install PowerDVD 5.  I did that and tested the disc and look what happens.  Same old problem.  I uninstalled it but still have the same problem!  All that hassle of backing up my old data, reinstalling the OS...and the suffering.  Oh the suffering.
At this point I think I'll just roll over and play dead.  Fine...I can't watch Underworld on my deskbox past chapter 3...strangely, Matrix used to skip backward too, but that problem seems to have gone away.
I saw Wonkanoby's post about the new Nforce drivers...I picked those up...no help.  I've pretty much done everything I can think about.  At one point I've even taken the drive back and exchanged it for a new one.  All updated drivers...DirectX 9...WinUpdated all current...really, nothing I can think of short of getting a new drive.  But...it works fine for some discs?!
I think I'm going insane...man...look at this thread...I must be insane...I've spent a great majority of it talking to myself...
