EMac CRT "display sleep" doesn't really power down

Greetings:
I understand that the eMac's CRT "display sleep" mode doesn't really power down but just darkens the display, as shown by the instant start up when you break sleep -- which truly powered down CRTs can't do (need several seconds to).
Is there a third party program which can truly power-down the CRT for "display sleep" while other processes are at work? I'm watching my 'lectric bills and this would really help.
JimWG

eMacs and old CRT iMacs are completely different beasts when it comes to the CRT connector inside.
The old iMac, at least this is true with my old Grape 333MHz model, used a standard 15-pin D-Sub type monitor cable inside so the "modification" would have been nothing more than unplugging the internal monitor and then plugging in the cable from the LCD monitor.
With the eMac, it isn't a standard monitor cable so you would have to figure out which wires are which and then make an adpater hardness to give you a standard output connector.

  • Display Sleep mode powers down eMac

I have a problem with the energy saver setting to put just the display to sleep; it shuts down the computer instead. I have the setting for putting the whole computer to sleep set to never and have unchecked the put hard disks to sleep option. If the display sleep setting is set to anything other then never when it tries to put the display to sleep it ends up turning power to the whole computer off instead.
Now the really fun part, once the computer shuts its self off I can not turn it back on without unplugging it from power for a few minutes to reset things. I have replaced the internal battery, reset the PMU and when that did not work I reset the firmware.

    - If you did not charge the iPod for a couple of hours before you did the reset then charege and reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then connect to your computer and if iTunes sees the iPod restore via iTunes.
    - Next see if recovery mode will allow iTunes to see the iPod so you can restore the iPod. For recovery mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Apple TV Power Usage - Sleep Doesn't Help Much

I have been concerned that my Apple TV never seems to go to sleep fully even when holding down the pause button as indicated - the video cuts off, but the hard drive keeps spinning.
Today I decided to measure the power consumption of the unit with a digital meter I just happen to own. Turns out that the unit uses only 18 to 21 watts under normal conditions! This is amazingly low for a computer - even my laptop ***** a lot more than this.
I got roughly the values listed below.
    Sleep mode: 18-19 watts
    Idling: 19-20 watts
    Playing music: 20 watts
    Playing video: 21 watts
So, the good news is that the Apple TV is very efficient even when running. The bad news is that it never uses much less than 18 watts while plugged in. If my calculations are correct, that's roughly 158 kWh a year minimum, or about $20 a year for average electricity prices.
Not too bad, but I still wish the unit could be powered off without having to unplug it - a real hassle.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

  • Macbook display sleeps a little TOO hard

Okay, So I have a black macbook with the 160g HD and 1gig ram running leapord and I made the mistake of installing InsomniaX so I could try to use my macbook as an iPod while I walked home from class from inside my backpack. It didn't work so I deleted InsomniaX but now when I close my mac book, something strange happens.
The computer Goes to sleep, but it doesn't simply sleep, it goes into this intense hibernation. WHen I open the lid, its as if the computer is off, and you can't simply hit the keys to wake it up. You have to press the Power button. When you do that, the computer starts to life, and the screen returns to what you were last doing, only there is a grey wash over it and there is a loading bar that loads the computer back up. Once the bar is done loading, you can resume your stuff.
Thats never happened before I deleted InsomniaX, and I really didn't want that program on my laptop. I've reset, and fiddled with the display sleep settings, but I haven't found the solution yet, ergo I'm here typing this quickly.
I would like to return my mac to normal, where you close the lid, it sleeps, you open the lid, and it wakes up. I don't really like that its turning off, or whatever it is doing, so even though I could technically leave it, I would prefer not to. Actually I'm not even sure if its damaging my computer at all.
Anyways guys, you are all SUPER helpful, so I'm sure one of you knows whats up. And I hope to hear from ya soon!

    Welcome to the Forums!
First of all, make sure that you have COMPLETELY deleted InsomniaX. Try downloading it again, and there may be an uninstall utility there. If not, use a utility such as CleanApp:
    http://www.synium.de/products/cleanapp/index.html
to make sure you've gotten rid of ALL the files linked to InsomniaX. Also, 1 gig isn't enough to comfortably run Leopard, upgrade to at least 2 gigs.
    Hope this helps!

  • Help with CRT display...

    Hi all...
I'm facing a nasty problem connecting an external crt display to my MacBook Pro.
    First here's the setup:
    -Two MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz
    -G4 Cube 450MHz
    -iBook G3 800MHz
    -CRT DPRO750SB 17" (Nec-Mitsubishi)
    -CRT AT897D-1 17" (Formac)
    -Problem:
I used to connect the DPRO750SB to one MBP with the Apple's DVI/VGA adapter and everything was fine but now the display doesn't light up anymore.
Furthermore, trying to boot with the display hooked up make the computer crash during startup.
    -Clues:
The display and its VGA cable seems OK since there is no problem with the G4 Cube (VGA to VGA) nor the iBook (mini-DVI/VGA).
I have no problem using the Formac Display with both MBP (DVI/VGA).
The DPRO750SB icc profile don't show up anymore in the "Displays" Preference Pane.
I'm able to get the DPRO working sometimes by plug the Formac in, unplug it, then plug the DPRO in.
(in this case, the "Displays" Pref Pane says it's the Formac).
    I'm really lost now...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks
    Fabrice

Well BF1942 and 3D mark both run fine, stable, no glitches and run at the size they are supposed to.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  PLEASE HELP!

  • Display sleep with dual monitor setup

I'm running a 17" studio display and a 20" studio display as a two momitor setup on a dual G5 2.0. The menu bar is on the 17". Unless I have display sleep in energy saver set to never, the 17" will go to sleep at the interval set in the preference panel, even when the system is in use. So far the only way I've found to get the display back off sleep is to put the computer itself to sleep - keyboard shortcut or by using the power button on the 17" and then wake it up.
I think this only started with 10.4.6. I can't upgrade to 10.4.7 yet - I run Avid Xpress Pro on the system and 10.4.7 gives dongle trouble. I've thrown away preference files, set and reset the sleep parameters. As it happens, I've had to reinstall the system a couple of weeks back, but the 17" studio still goes to sleep when it shouldn't.
The problem doesn't occur if the menu bar is on the 20" cinema display, but that's not the way I want it.
Anyone with the same problem,, or better a suggested solution?

finally found the solution (apple i hope your reading
this as this is a mad bug!)
you need to have the dock on the bottom of the main
screen in order to view the image on that screen.
Wierd, I have my dock on the left side of my main screen... which is to the left of my secondary screen. Perhaps you cannot have the dock in-between screens?
kgelner, how have you noticed the performance of your
card when working with aperture? Im seriously
debating upgrading mine as its just slow and annoying
I find it usable but I'm also only working with TIFF files (my camera is not supported). I am also pretty strongly thinking about going with the X800xt card, which should be at least twice as fast. Some operations (like a lot of Spot & Patch repairs combined with Shadows/Highlights) do make things a bit laggy.
I also have the 256MB version of the 9800, which I think helps with some of the larger images and operations.

  • Can I use Hot Corners to make the display sleep immediately?

I have Hot Corners set up so that the screen-saver kicks in as soon as I move the mouse to the top-right corner. However, I'd really like to be able to make the display sleep immediately, rather than show the screen-saver first... can I do that? There doesn't seem to be a Hot Corners option for "Display sleep".

    Hi Garth
That can be set using expose.
Open up preferences /dashboard & expose.
Click on one of the buttons to set your option to start screen saver by choosing the corner you wish to use.

Hi, I'm trying to shut down the phone in the normal way (the Sleep / Wake button and hold down on the Close tab) turns off the display after a while yet, but the phone turns off completely opens up the phone to come out after the apple logo .. What is the reason I'd appreciate if you help how to fix it ...pleasa help me

Doing those doesn't turn off your phone?
As stated hold down the top button only until you see the red slider to power off your phone.
If that doesn't work then take it to Apple and see what they say.

  • Can a wire disconnected from the CRT display cause the computer to crash?

    Hello all,
My computer keeps on freezing up and also having kernal panics when I am using it. I have tried everything to fix the problem but nothing worked. Today, I shined a flashlight through the cover of the computer and found a wire that is disconnected from the CRT display. While I am using my computer, the display is working fine. No discoloration or anything. Can someone please let me know (if you know) that a wire disconnected from the CRT display is causing my problem?
Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.
iMac 500 MHz PowerPC G3 256 MB SDRAM 30 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello,
It's really hard saying what you are looking at. Here's my thoughts:
Has the computer ever been serviced / dismantled?
If not, the wire may have always been like that from the factory.
Without seeing it, it's hard saying for sure.
It could be a "Tie" or something similar that just there to hold things in-place (like a zip-tie). It's not unusual to find actual wire used as a tie.
It could be a wire that was only used in specific configurations. Perhaps your system doesn't have the option that needed that connection. They may have used a standard wire-loom, and only used wires they needed.
It could be your AirPort antenna (used or not). I can't say since I cannot see it myself.
There's just any number of things it could be.
But, if the machine has been working, and not been opened, then that wire has probably been like that for a long time.
The only reason I could see for a wire to be loose now if it wasn't previously, would be if it had stress on it, and the solder connection just let go / broke.
Can you describe what it looks like in more detail? That might help someone identify it.
How does it run through the system? Can you tell what color it is? Is is coated or bare wire? Does it run along with the other wires? Does it look like it was attached previously? Is there a bare end on the wire? Does if have a connector? Etc.
Perhaps with some additional detail, we might be able to better advise you.
    I hope this helps.

  • EMac CRT Monitor Life?

Just wondering what the average life I can expect out of my eMac CRT Monitor? I've read that the average life of a CRT monitor is about 10,000 - 20,000 hours.
Since I purchased my eMac in Jan 2003, run it about 12 -14 hours a day (figuring in screen saver mode), 7 days a week, 12 months a year, that's about 4700 hours a year (+/-). If average screen life is 20,000 hours, that gives my eMac monitor about 4.25 - 4.5 years of use before it reaches it's end life.
Does this make sense, or is the life of an eMac monitor much longer than the 10,000 - 20,000 hours I've read about on line (between CRT and LCD monitor life)?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting because my eMac will sometimes get a
"spark". Kind of hard to explain but it will make a
zapping sound and loose a screen for about half a
second - like it's trying to crap out on me.
It doesn't do it all the time. Someone told me that
my CRT is trying to die.
All the electrical has been checked out and I've got
the computer hooked into an APC.
    Any ideas??
Dolphin, I posted this same question few months back with no replies. I forget how long this has been going on --the Zap! Blip!--- but my warrant is 3 year warranty on my 3 year old eMac is bout to run out.
If it is a power surge it never affects aany other elctrical things it my house so I am very suspicious of the eMac itself.
Thinking I will not go for anohter warranty hope for best and invest in mini-mac if the eMac does bite dust after warreanty expirres.

  • Display sleep time

My Display goes to sleep after one minute, no matter what I have the display sleep time set at.  Been this way from new.

    Hello again glschell,
Thank you for responding to my post requesting additional information. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Using and Adjusting Your Monitor, where you will see under the heading Using Onscreen Display (OSD) the Monitor controls and under Management you will see Sleep Timer which may be the culprit in your issue. Additionally, I am providing you with the steps needed to set your computer's sleep timer:
    Step 1. Click on Start
Step 2. Click on Control Panel
Step 3. Click System and Security
Step 4. Click on Power Options
Step 5. Change the conditions of the computer's sleep mode
Now if none of the above works I would recommend that if the issue is really bothersome to follow the steps in the HP Support document: Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7) and back up the personal files on your computer. After you have successfully backed up your personal files you can follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 7), which will reinstall your operating system and bring it back to how it was when it first came out of the factory. The original image you had on the computer may have been faulty and this will resolve that.
Please re-post if you require additional support. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!

  • Mac Mini wont' Display Sleep after Yosemite Update

My Mac Mini is no longer going into Display Sleep. Instead I now see the Screen Saver.  I have checked System Preferences | Energy Saver and it is definitely set to Display Sleep after 10 minutes (The default). What is interesting is that if I try to change the Display Sleep time (e.g. to 1 hour), when I go back into Energy Saver, it is back to 10 minutes - this doesn't look right!  In fact none of the options (e.g. Wake on LAN) seem to stay changed.
This seemed to start after the update to Yosemite 10.10.1 a few days ago - but that might be coincidental. Until then Display Sleep had worked fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Nick

Hello My ipads Power button is not working properly when I press it once it shows option to turn off instead of locking and some other display problems like it suddenly lockes down or display disappears ...Please help. Thank You

    Thanks for that information!
I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!
