EMac CRT Monitor Life?

Just wondering what the average life I can expect out of my eMac CRT Monitor? I've read that the average life of a CRT monitor is about 10,000 - 20,000 hours.
Since I purchased my eMac in Jan 2003, run it about 12 -14 hours a day (figuring in screen saver mode), 7 days a week, 12 months a year, that's about 4700 hours a year (+/-). If average screen life is 20,000 hours, that gives my eMac monitor about 4.25 - 4.5 years of use before it reaches it's end life.
Does this make sense, or is the life of an eMac monitor much longer than the 10,000 - 20,000 hours I've read about on line (between CRT and LCD monitor life)?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting because my eMac will sometimes get a
"spark". Kind of hard to explain but it will make a
zapping sound and loose a screen for about half a
second - like it's trying to crap out on me.
It doesn't do it all the time. Someone told me that
my CRT is trying to die.
All the electrical has been checked out and I've got
the computer hooked into an APC.
Any ideas??
Dolphin, I posted this same question few months back with no replies. I forget how long this has been going on --the Zap! Blip!--- but my warrant is 3 year warranty on my 3 year old eMac is bout to run out.
If it is a power surge it never affects aany other elctrical things it my house so I am very suspicious of the eMac itself.
Thinking I will not go for anohter warranty hope for best and invest in mini-mac if the eMac does bite dust after warreanty expirres.

CRT screen life?

Hi, I just read somewhere that the maximum life of a CRT monitor is around 20,000 hours. If some newer computers than the ones talked about here have already reached the end of their monitors' life, how is it that 10+-year-old CRT monitors are still working properly?
I'm asking because my eMac's screen is starting to look a little weird.

None of the defects you describe is an indicator of impending doom. All have adjustments in the monitor. Your main complaint is about an adjustment called "pincushion'. \[Think of the shape of a typical pincushion, with the sides bulging out.]
If it is a high end monitor, sometimes those adjustments can be made directly or indirectly through buttons on the front panel, or in certain Apple monitors, with "on-screen" adjustments if the proper software is available.
On older, less expensive monitors, those adjustments require you to remove the cover on the CRT and literally risk your life reaching around the "live" electronics to make the adjustments with the power on and the High Voltage circuitry exposed. Don't do it.
If you are referring to the eMac listed in your equipment line, it should have support for on-screen adjustments using System Preferences > Displays. Check all the options of that pane, and you may be surprised to find adjustments there. Look for "Geometry" and or "Pincushion".

Connect a Professional CRT monitor to iMac

Is there any way to connect a Professional CRT monitor to an iMac? I need to color correct my short film. If a regular monitor won't work what kinds will for accurate color grading?

I'm not sure what a professional CRT is compare to other CRT displays, but if it uses a VGA connection, all you need is a mini-DVI to VGA adapter.

I have a 21-inch flat screen CRT attached to my iMac at 1600x1200 resolution. It can go to 1792x1344, but that's a bit too small with the text, and the refresh rate drops to 60 Hz instead of 75 Hz at 1600x1200. You can, of course, choose all the standard resolutions down to 640x480.

FCP and QT play to a second CRT monitor via FW800?

I have FCP installed on my iMAC, my iMAC has a FW800 and Mini DisplayPort.
I also have an old CRT monitor that I used for an older PC that I now want to view videos rendered on FCP. I read in the documentation that FCP can play/output to an external video device (using firewire amoung other things).
I'm not sure how to do this but is it possible to connect my iMAC via FW800 to my old CRT monitor?
If so what cables and converters do I need to get? Note that I do not have a video deck.
I basically need to see how my videos look on CRT displays. Currently I'm copying my videos to my PC and then playing them but I was hoping to skip that step.

Bengt: Thanks for the warning, I have FCP 7, I wasn't too concearned with getting QT to work, it would be a plus though. But I basically wanted to see what the output looked like without having to transfer it to my PC and view it on my PC's CRT monitor each time.
e45blue: It's an old SONY CRT computer monitor, it's actually starting to die.
I have an old analog NTSC TV set with a digital TV converter box... though that old TV is dying too and it's in another room anyways.
I basically want to see how the production video I'm editing looks like on a CRT display. I'm using an iMAC to edit the videos and that iMAC is an LCD display so the colors look richer but always looks over exposed.
When I move the edited videos to my PC they look underexposed... and that is with my CRT monitor's contrast at maximum.

KONA 3 will not playback on CRT Monitor

I am having problems with playback of clips and sequences in a DVCPRO HD 720p50 project. When I view clips on a JVC CRT monitor, via SDI out, using the 625i 25 down conversion feature in the KONA control panel, I only get a still frame until I stop playback at which point the frame updates to the current frame. Strangely, if I drag the playhead through the clip I can see the clip playing fine.
I have made sure that 'External Video' setting in FCP is set to all 'All Frames'.
I've made sure that the Video Playback option is set to AJA Kona 720p 50 8 bit (1280X720).
The Kona 3 Control Panel has been set up the recognise the 720p50 frame setting and down convert to 625i25(PAL) for output to the SD CRT monitor.
The only time I get proper playback on the monitor is when I set FCP video playback to AJA Kona 720p25 8 Bit DVCProHD(1280x720). However I get an awful strobe effect on the monitor.
I'm wondering whether the KONA presets even support this type of project/clip as nowhere can I find a preset that recognises my frame size - 960x720. The footage was shot on the Panasonic HVX200.
Any help would be really appreciated as I've spent many hours trying to find the right settings

I suspect that the cameraman recorded the material at 720p50 PN. This uses less space on the P2 card or Firestore, but the footage has a timebase of 25 fps, which apparently the Kona card doesn't handle.
Ask the camera person to record at the normal 720p50 setting on the camera, and the normal P2 or Quicktime setting on the recording media.
As for the footage you already have, there is a method in Compressor, to get it to 50fps.
For the setting select Advance Format Conversion - DVCPRO HD 720p60, and in the inspector Encoder (2nd button from the left) for the video settings select "Custom" and type in "50"
(By the way, this is also a workaround if you don't have FCP 6 and the new Frame Rate Converter to make a nice slow motion. After you get it to 50fps use Cinema Tools to conform the footage to 25 fps and it makes it play at 50 percent speed)
(Disclaimer - I have only a little experience with the HVX200, but this is what has worked for me.)

Great CRT Monitor for Mac Mini

Having purchased a Mac Mini a few weeks ago I was horrified to read all the posts on this site reporting problems with monitors. In need of a new CRT monitor I asked the folks at Mac Zone for a recomendation and then placed an order for the 17" Viewsonic Ultra Brite E70F+ ($130 something).
When the monitor arrived a few days later I took it out of the box, plugged it into the Mini using the adaptor supplied by Apple and turned it on.
The rest, as the saying goes, is history! A great monitor and it works with the Mini (or at least My Mini) without a hitch.

Here's one that may be worth a look:

I have a dv7-6b32us .. i am using a crt monitor which i know supports 120hz.. video driver doesn't

I have a dv7-6b32us laptop...
Operating system is windows 7 home premium 64 bit..
The problem I'm having is.. I have it hooked up a CRT monitor that I know supports 120hz easy at the resolution I want to run my games in.. can easily run 240. My issue is since I'm on windows 7, it now caps my max hertz at 85. Which is a complete joke. If I have to do some regedit or edit some system files. Please point me in the right direction..
Or if there is something simpler as in a driver that allows it, would always be nice. the video is the INTEL HD 3000

CRT monitor to add on

I have a flat scrn and now an additional CRT monitor to add on to my G5 to have a larger desktop to work with. Where do I start? How do I know if an ADC-VGA adaptor will work? And how do I set it up ?

Hello! It should work by just hooking the cable up to the monitor using the dvi to vga adapter. Open the system prefs and click on displays and then arrangement and start using it! I've got a 24" Gateway LCD and a 22" Dell running off this old 9200 radeon. Tom

Old crt monitor

i just picked up an old apple crt monitor and hooked it up to my macbook so i could have more space for creating music. i was wondering if there is any way to have the toolbar on both screens. when i have garageband opened on the big screen the toolbar is on my laptop screen. can i change it so its on both screens or on the monitor screen?

Well, when you have an additional monitor you should have the option to change some settings. Check the display option in the system preferences. There should be some additional settings to choose from.

Hooking up crt monitor to imac g5

I just went out and bought a used crt monitor to work with color. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to hook it up to my imac G5 computer. How do I do this? What cables do I need. The monitor is a JVC TM-1400SU and came with a BNC to RCA cable.

The iMac's output jack is meant for driving low power items like headphones or amplified speakers, so its maximum output power is in the milliwatt range. If your speakers aren't self-powered (they will have some power source like batteries or a power plug if they are), the iMac will not be able to supply enough power to play them at more than whisper levels without lots of distortion.
So, using an amp will sound much better with unpowered speakers, particularly if both are high quality, high fidelity components like the topic's author is talking about.
However, if your speakers already are amplified (self-powered), just plug them into the iMac directly. There is nothing to gain by adding a power amp unless you can connect directly to the speakers.

It will work; all new Power Macs come with a DVI-VGA adapter, and you won't need a driver for your monitor.

Using and Sharing a CRT monitor w/a PC

I'm curious if I can use a CRT monitor as a second monitor with my Imac(Intel 24in. 2.4 GHz, for an extended desktop, etc. I'd also like to know if I could share the monitor with a PC with a KVM-type switch... If doing these is possible, what compnents do I need to buy?

New dual mac pro using fcp studio doesn't see external crt monitor

I recently invested in a system to re-edit film and set up my system...dual editing up is fine I put my larger dell monitor through the 3870 which is in bay one and the browser comes up on the 2nd monitor connected to the 2600 in bay 2.
The problem is I can't get my EXTERNAL VIDEO out go to the crt monitor...this is connected by svideo that's on the 3870 which my primary monitor is connected to. Under "video playback" there's no option to choose "apple firewire" the only thing on that menu is the "digital cinema desktop preview" and only those choices, the same under my audio/video settings under the "final cut pro" menu. Theres no option I see on here either for mirroring under the playback menu either am I looking in the wrong place?
This appears to be a software issue as I'm not seeing the other options under video playback to even recognize the dv connection to my primary monitor...I've seen commentary in other logs to try deleting preferences but which ones?
The crt monitor is seen under my apple hardware, I can move things in and out of it...only in final cut pro I can't get external monitor on it...and when I choose this cinema choice the picture comes up on my main monitor but only as a still it doesn't seem to allow me to choose "all frames" in any case.
My main concern right now is to get this external monitor to be read by final cut PLEASE HELP thanks!

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.
