Emac Display Expanding and Contracting

I have a first generation Emac that I just bought used. The screen is expanding and contracting (left - right). Any suggestions on what this is? Thanks.

You may have a defective IVAD cable, a relatively simple part to replace. Such problems plagued only the original nVidia-graphics powered eMac 700 and 800 MHz models.
The characteristic symptomatic indicator of such a defect, however, is most commonly video shrinkage vertically, with the image collapsing from a full to half screen.

No, I don't mean that your header should be all one image.
Currently, your header is a table with a number of images
inside it. The width of the table is "absolute." It is set to a
fixed number of pixels (800). It won't change. What you see as
smaller and larger on your different monitors is a result of the
different resolution that the two monitors have.
The forum content, on the other hand, is in tables with
widths that are "relative." They are are a percentage of the width
of the browser window (81%). These tables will change size
depending on the size of the browser window. For just one perfect
setting, everything will line up. For all other widths, you have a
mess.
You need your header table and your forum tables to match.
Either your header needs to be designed differently, so that it can
expand and contract gracefully when a browser window is a different
size (in pixels), or you need to edit your forum so that the
various parts are all 800 pixels wide instead of varying
percentages.
As for monitors, it isn't the physical size that is important
here, it's resolution. It isn't the number of inches, it's the
number of pixels. You can have a 21" monitor that's set to 800x600
pixels and you can have a 17" monitor set to 1600x1200 pixels. On a
monitor with 800x600 pixel resolution, your header will be the full
width of the screen and the forum content will be about 650 pixels,
indented on both sides. On a monitor that is 1600x1200 pixel
resolution, your header will be about half of the screen width and
your forum content will be about 1300 pixels wide.

EMac Display Pulsates and Shuts Down Mac

Hello, When we start up this eMac after being turned off for a long time, we get through the password screen and the programs load, but while doing this the display starts getting smaller and kinda pulsates. This gets worse as the screen gradually gets smaller and then Shuts Down completely.
We can wait a few minutes, unplug the eMac, plug it back in, start it up, but we don't even get to the Desktop before it turns itself off.
I'm a technician but only for less than two years and I've never seen this before. I'm thinking there is a hardware problem, most likely with the display adapter and the computer is shutting down before any serious damage to the logic board. Or is that the case, the logic board is toast?

I'm not aware of any software, IVAD cable, or PRAM battery symptoms matching what you describe, nor does it match the leaking capacitor issue symptoms. It does sound consistient with a bad solder joint somewhere, possiblly in the power supply to the analog/CRT assembly, in that it starts OK while cold but goes bad as the computer warms up during startup. Troubleshooting such problems requires teardown of the computer and repair of an indiviadual solder joint is difficult at best even if the individual joint(s) can be identified; realistically, at best you'd be able to narrow it down to the logic board, analog/CRT assembly, or power supply, and replace that. Replacing any but the power supply would likely cost more than the computer is now worth. When the computer shuts down, is the entire computer shutting down (including fan, keyboard optical tray eject button, and power LED) or just the display? If the computer entirely shuts down, that would actually be encouraging as it would suggest looking at the power supply first, and replacement of that could be cost-effective.
How old is the computer? Was the extended three-year AppleCare warrenty purchased for it? You could contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider and ask about their fee for diagnostic testing and/or replacing the power supply.

Why doesn't a 2 finger gesture of expand and contract work in version 4.0 ???

I had version 3.6.13 If I placed 2 fingers on my touchscreen and pushed them apart, the page would expand. Pull them together and it would contract. Upgraded to version 4 and that went away. Went back to 3.6.13 because of that feature. After customizing Firefox extensively, that feature is gone again. I un-did all the add-ons one by one and still can't get it to work. Any suggestions as to how to activate it in version 4 or get it back in 3.6.13???

Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the about:config page.

browser.gesture.pinch.out -> cmd_fullZoomEnlarge

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. 
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page. 
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

EMac display shaking and squeezing in, IVAD cable?

Hi,
I'm trying to determine if my eMac is experiencing an IVAD cable problem. The screen will pinch in on the sides and both the top and bottom disappear. It shakes and pinches in and then will go back to normal and then the squeezing and shaking begin again. This occurs during the first fifteen minutes or so after startup. A gentle rap on the side of the computer sometimes sets things right. Right now, for instance, the screen is fine. But it took some time to get to this stable state.
I thought it was an electrical outlet problem or an RF problem, so I've removed most of the other things on that circuit and changed the arrangement of nearby stuff. The squeezing and shaking still occurs. I began to notice that the eMac would die while sleeping and then after rebooting I saw the shaking and squeezed screen. I've since removed other items from the circuit, so I may have cleared up one problem (an inadequate circuit). The warm-up period, shaky screen problem remains.
I've done the PRAM and battery replacement stuff. I'm also pretty good at taking the eMac apart (I've replaced the optical drive). If need be, I'll replace the cable. But, the description of my screen acting up seems a bit different then the classic IVAD problem.

Thanks for your posts. I opened her up before Christmas to check out the IVAD cable and think about whether it was the cause of the problem. There continued to be issues with the screen (same shaking and shrinking in from the sides). Also, sleep mode induced shutdown. My eMac's serial number is out of range as well.
I backed off of dealing with the IVAD cable when it was obvious that I didn't have the tools, patience, or strength of heart to deal with that big a problem (one end of the IVAD cable is almost inaccessible). I did check to see that it was properly installed. I blew out some dust, put it back together, and pressed the PMU reset button just for grins. After a quick test to see if it ran, I shut everything down for several days for a Christmas trip out of town.
Since our return, there hasn't been a problem. The screen is steady as a rock. Weird?
I'll be interested in what you hear from the Apple folks...

Emac display lines and restart

My display has short lines that are negative and positive. and jump around like electrical interference(maybe not that intense ). When I tried a restart, to see if it would help with the quality of display, my start up disk failed and got me to the blue screen starting to load OS 10, and then only blue screen. I zapped the PRAM. Then I could use my restore and install disk. I reinstalled both Tiger and Panther. Everything works until trying to restart. I still have distortion in the display. My serial number is G84313.... is this significant? Any ideas?

Hi. I don't think that it is possible to fix the lines on your screen. I'm thinking that maybe you had placed a magnet near the CRT display which causes the colors to get distorted and also the picture loses clarity and detail. When this happened to me I restarted the system right after it happened and it was normal.

How to make a subform expand AND contract?

Newbie here. Maybe I'm approaching this from the wrong direction. Hopefully someone can provide me with the proper method.
I have created a series of subforms which I'd like to initially display as hidden with only a "header/button" visible for each subform. Each subform visible/invisible header object is a button which, when run, should give the form a cascading tab effect. What I'd LIKE to see happen is this: When the user clicks the button, the subform becomes visible, pushing all other header object buttons further down. However, when the visible subform button is pushed again, the subform content becomes invisible and the subform collapses back to the original form (with all user provided content remaining intact, but that's not the issue here). The problem is that I can "sort of" get this to work using the xxx.presence = "visible"/"invisible" method, but upon invoking the "invisible" part, the space where the content was showing still remains; the subform doesn't collapse.
A related issue with this is: If I use a checkbox, the result is as I described above. But if I use a button, the subform opens but all the objects in it remain invisible.
Is that the proper way to achieve this? Indeed, can a collapsible subform retain input data? I haven't even got that far yet. :-)

I have figure out a way of doing what I wanted to achieve, a tab which would open and close the subform... basically two identical buttons, one aligned on top of the other. When the top button fires, it hides itself and unhides the other as well as unhiding the subforms, the other button, when fired hides itself, unhides the first button and hides the subforms.
I have a related question though.
Identical if/else statement is not very elegent, for sure, and I am wondering if there was another way to do this.

After using reset firefox my bookmark folders no longer have the expand and contract arrows attached to them, how can i restore this function?

Used "Reset Firefox" because of persistent problem with flash freezing Firefox.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

It is also possible that you use a Windows theme that doesn't work well regarding those extend arrows.

How do I go back to my old version of Firefox. 4 does not allow me to use two finger mousepad control to expand or contract my screen. Also I don't like the lack of a drop-down arrow next to the back/forward buttons.

I don't like to have to click and drag to see the drop down history of the back/forward buttons - this requires two fingers or a double tap and hold finger motion. MUCH easier to click and release and take my time to pick the screen I want to go back to, then click on that link with a separate motion.
I especially don't like that I can no longer expand and contract the screen with two finger motion on my mousepad!!!
Generally, I don't see any advantage to the new layout - and I have a slight preference to having my tabs closer to the screen rather than above the address bar, since I more frequently click on tabs than on the address bar. If you want to improve the view I would recommend combining the very topmost bar which is part of the window surround with the File Edit etc bar (and please keep File, Edit, View History, etc separated instead of putting them into a dropdown). This will allow the viewer one more line of text on a given webpage, and eliminate the wasted space which is only used to identify the window as FF and provide the close window buttons

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

Pages Changes expands or contracts after saving

I have a document in Pages and I selected a blank page as my format 2 column. I have written a 97 page book My Life Story including many pictures.
When I save the document and open it later I find that pictures have shifted positions and the text may expand or contract enough for the pictures to be out of position.
I may have selected the wrong format in the beginning. I have never come across this problem in any other application. I drag a picture into the document it is much larger than the original and I have to resize it to fit the column. I have to include the caption with the jpg picture in order for it to retain its position. The text wraps around the picture when I add text I always have to start from the new text point and move all the pictures to the new position within the text. I opened my document today and it had changed from the last save. I am afraid to print it for it may not appear as I last saved it. Normally saving a document keeps it as it was when it was last saved.

PDF files can be created using an image quality of good, better, or best. When the
image quality is set to best, the resolution of images isn’t scaled down. When the
image quality is set to better, images are downsampled to 150 dpi. When the image
quality is set to good, images are downsampled to 72 dpi. Images without an alpha
channel are JPEG compressed with a compression level of 0.7 at the good setting
and 0.9 at the better setting.
Inserting picture with a res higher than 300 is useless.
it seems they could at least make the Screen Shots contemporary display resolution.
Are you ready to pay for a 300 dpi display monitor ?

Hierarchical expanding list contracts when link is klicked

I've got a hierarchical expanding list (a menu) with parent and child entries located on page zero.
Two things are wrong with it.
1. I dont want the parent entries (the ones that are displayed from the start) to be links. If I klick the + -sign next to them the list expands and show the child entries that are links to different pages. But if i klick the parent entries I get kicked to the login screen. I've set the parent entries to have Target type: -no target- but it doesn't work.
2 When I klick a child entry I'm linked to the right page but the hierarchical expanding list contracts... I'd like it to be expanded the way it was when I cklicked the link.
Could this be realated to the fact that it's located on page zero??? I've had some problems with page 0 before... But shouldn't you put a meny on page zero?
I would appreciate any help you could give me.

I've moved the menu from page zero to another page temporarily but it still misbehaves. Anyone have any ideas??

Adding a link to expand and collapse all DHTML drop downs

Hi, can anyone help me adapt the "Skinny on Skins" example "Add a Toolbar button to expand and collapse all DHTML drop downs" so that it will work with just a simple HTML link in RH8, instead of being attached to a custom skin button?
The example looks like this:
Step 1. Open the Skins Editor for the skin where you want to add the button.
Step 2. After the preview loads into the window, ensure that the Toolbar tab has focus, then click the plus symbol. The Custom Toolbar Item dialog should display.
Step 3. Type the Item Name (This is simply an internal reference for the button).
Step 4. Type the Text (This is the text that will be seen by the end user. The field must contain something. So if you don't want any verbiage to display for your toolbar item, simply type a space.)
Step 5. Choose your Image Options, then click the Action tab.
Step 6. Click the JavaScript option button.
Step 7. Enter the following code in the OnClick field:

Hi again
I want to use it in the header of one of my Master Pages, so it will only be created/maintained once. Not all my pages have drop downs in so rather than have a toolbar button available for every page, I was trying to be a bit cuter by having two Master Pages - one for normal pages and one for pages with drop downs in.
I'm no javascript expert so I'll see if one of my developers can help.

How to perform expand and collapse operation on click of link or button

Hi
Is there anyway by which i can perform expand and collapse operation over a table on click of a command link or button without using show details component.
Is there any other alternative to show detail.
I do not want to use show detail because of the following reason.
I have got a page where in i pass some parameters to the URL based on which details get displayed on the page.
Now when i pass a parameter, change the parameter, once again send the previously used parameter(i,e the parameter that i passed initially), values in the table under show detail do not show any change in values.
Once i pass values which i have already passed, values in the table under show detail component do not refreshed.
If anyone has encountered with similar situation, then please post me reply's as to how you could over come the problem??

Perhaps you could use an on-demand application process instead - you can specify these in the URL.
The URL syntax (for your link) would be like...
