EMac + External HD

I have two Macs. A PowerMac 6500/300 to which I have added a USB 1.1 PCI card. The other is an eMac running OX 10.3.9.
I'm considering buying a PikaOne Flycase Silver 250Gb External Firewire and USB 2 3.5" Desktop HD for about £130 for back-up/exta space purposes for use on both Macs.
I have used a PikaOne drive before. A 40gb Portable Slim Portable version. This HD worked fine with both my eMac and my 6500/300 (despite it being USB 1.1).
Now, I know I can't use the PikaOne external drive to boot my 6500/300 in an emergency so I have to rely on a bootable CD for that. However, I would like to know if I m correct thinking that I should be able to install a bootable system folder for the eMac on the PikaOne incase it was needed?

Actually, that's a good point and one I should've remembered to mention: if you don't need to copy over any third-party add-ons (I'm fond of MenuMeters myself), you can use an OS X INstall disk to put a fresh copy of the OS System onto the external HD. You can then copy your user data files over, although that can present a gotcha depending on whether or not you have 'igore permissions' set on the external HD. That's why it's generally easier to just use a cloning utility; while both SuperDuper! and CCC are shareware, you can use SuperDuper! as freeware to do a total clone of the hard drive (the shareware fee allows features like incremental and smart backups).

    What is the DVD problem?
This same Lacie burner reads and writes DVD and CD fine with our iMac 450 DV 320mb memory. Running 9.2 and X.3

OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x natively support data burning to external DVD drives but video payback requires software such as iDVD which isn't installed by default on models without an internal DVD drive (the installer sees no internal drive and thinks it's unnecessary). Try downloading VLC Player and see if that will let you play movies.

  • EMac external display

i want to use my tv as an external display for my eMac using vga, and i was wondering if there would be any resolution problems with this?
    i have a 26inch tv.

First, are you aware that (without hacking the eMac, anyway) you cannot use an external screen as a separate display? Any external screen will mirror the computer's display? You may already know, but just wanted to make sure.
Anyway, as long as the TV will support your resolutions your eMac supports - up to 1280x960 @ 72Hz - the TV should work.

  • Emac external burner question

    Hi Group
A collegue has emac with a single layer superdrive and was using DVD Studio Pro 2 to create a 2 hr long project. I've since remembered that DVD SP 3.02 was needed to allow dual layer disc burning but wondered if there were any other "gotchas" I should look out for
eg does DVD SP3 or 4 (or, indeed the OS) allow you to select from multiple dvd burners, if installed?
any tips or advice is most welcome
    thanks
    Dave

My eMac's superdrive died not that long ago. Wouldn't read any discs at all.
So, I've looked into these options...
The cheapest option, is to replace the internal drive. Easily less than half the cost of buying a RELIABLE external drive.
Of course, if you're not comfy opening the eMac (ie due to the CRT with all its electrical deadliness), then external is the only way.
The best option is a firewire external optical drive. Better than USB. Especially if you only have a USB 1.0 eMac... (?) If it is USB 1.0 (ie pre 2004), then USB is probably not even an option, as USB 1 isn't good enough to handle the required transfer speeds.

  • **eMac External 40 GB Firewire 400 HD and backup software?**

I resently experienced a partial data loss for no logical reason. The screen froze, I couldn't force quit, so I had to power down the computer. Something that I never like to do as I was informed that it can damage the HD. All the folders on the desktop disappeared without trace. I back-up to CD ROM every month. All my important data was intact. However some data was lost. It occured to me that I should have a perfect duplicate back-up of my internal hard disc.
My emac has a 40 GB HD.
Can anyone suggest a good firewire External HD and backup software? In order that no data can ever be lost!
eMac 1 Ghz Combi   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1GB SDRAM

For backup software, CarbonCopyCloner has a number of fans; I use SuperDuper!. A bootable clone of your HD would be a minimum. Better yet, get a 100 GB or greater HD, partition it, and use SuperDuper to put a bootable clone on the first partition, updating that regularly, and use the other partition(s) for either additional storage or a redunant backup of key data. You can for instance move your iTunes Library or move your iPhoto Library to an external HD.
The actual make and model of an external Firewire HD is less critical than having one in the first place (and regularly backing up). I have several LaCie drives at home and work (one cowaorker has about 12 LaCie HDs chained off his Mac, an impressive sight); or you can check the expanding your eMac forum for any of the posts in which Patrick (PT) describes how to roll your own, so to speak: buy a cheap bare HD, buy a Firewire enclosure, put them together and format.

  • EMac external screen problem

I am trying to connect an external monitor (Acer 22" P221WD) to my eMac with the VGA adapter.
At boot time I get a "Input Not Supported" message on the monitor -- the computer seems to boot fine, though (although I get no output on the CRT, which is the reason why I want to use an external).
Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it?
I believe the monitor and cables are OK as the Acer works fine with my MBP.
The eMac (minus its CRT) and VGA adapter also seem OK as I get an output on an older 19" Viewsonic monitor.
I thought of a mismatch in resolution, but the Acer seems to handle 1024x768 fine from the MBP.
Thanks in advance for any idea of what to try next!

Thanks, but this monitor has no such switch -- the auto-detect works fine when I use it with my MBP either on the VGA or the DVI input.
The cause for the problem, it turns out is incompatible refresh (vertical sync) rates. The eMac sends crazy refresh rates (72-138 Hz) while it seems that most modern LCD panels do no go anywhere near that high.
The solution of the problem is not that straightforward though. Apart from finding a monitor that accepts high refresh rates, a suitable scan converter may do the job, but it's difficult to find enough information to get the right combo.

  • Is there a way to use the eMac as an external monitor

I haven't used my Emac for awhile, but my 17" powerbook is now having a serious display problem and I can't even see the log-in screen. I want to use the Emac as an external monitor or at least have sharing between the two machines. They are both using 10.4.11. What do I need to do to connect them?

You need to connect them via ethernet or wirelessly, plus a product such as ScreenRecycler. Conventional video in isn't available on most Macs.

  • I think my CD drive is dead-can I hook up an external CD drive to my Emac?

when I insert a CD I hear a couple of clicking type sounds and then the disk ejects. DVD's are playing fine. I tried repairing the disk and booting from one of my install CD's and it didn't work.
    Thanks

DVDs and CSs operate at different wavelengths and all drives on the market use separate LED lasers for the DVD and CD functions. It's not uncommon for one LED to fail while the other still operates. Before replacing the drive, through, try running a CD lens cleaner through the drive for a few passes. DVD and CD LEDs in all cases I'm aware of run through different lenses, so it's possible your drive's CD lens has enough grime on it to prevent it from working while the DVD lens is still relatively clear.
If that doesn't fix the problem, then it's easy to attach an external optical drive and use that. Go with Firewire; while your 1.25 GHz eMac has USB 2.0, USB driver support is more problematic while Firewire support is pretty solid. A Firewire drive will also allow you to use the external drive as a boot device per Startup Manager: Select a Startup Volume.
OS X 10.3 and later will support disc burning to an external drive from the Finder, so you don't even need additional software such as Toast (although an optical drive bundled with Toast will give you more control over disc burning than what's built into the Finder).

  • Can't get Leopard to load on my eMac's external drive

After speaking with someone at the Genius Bar last week, we determined that the problem I'm having with my eMac is probably due to the 4-5 year old internal hard drive finally getting ready to give up the ghost. ;-(
I asked if it would make sense to buy an new external drive, load Leopard on that, and boot off that while I save for a new Mac. He suggested that would work. (While the speed might not be ideal over a USB connection, I'm not too concerned with that. As long as the kids can do their homework, and I have a place to store photos it's fine.)
I just got my new external HD, got it partitioned into 3, and am trying to load 10.5.3 on it from my CD so I can make it the boot drive. The problem is that - while all 3 partitions show up on the "list" of places to install, the internal HD is the only one that will let me install on it. The 3 partitions all say that I can't install on them (I have confirmed that the partitions are set up as APT under the Options button).
Any idea why I can't install on the external, and more importantly, can I work around it somehow before my internal drive dies for good?
    Thanks,
    Tim

Hello Mac user for life ,
Do you have the FreeAgent Pro, which is Firewire as well as USB, because Leopard wants to install over Firewire.
    FreeAgent drives
If you do have the firewire enabled drive, connect it with a firewire cable, else see if you can exchange it for the model that has firewire.

  • Do I really need to buy an external drive to burn DVDs on my eMac (10.4)?

I have been trying to burn DVDs (using DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs) on my eMac (OS 10.4) without success. The machine just acts as if nothing has been put in the drive; it whirrs and whirrs, no icon appears, no error message, nothing, until after half an hour or so I have to just eject it. On another forum, I was told that the problem was probably that my eMac can't recognize blank DVD-Rs, let alone burn them, without an external drive that has to be purchased separately. I want to be sure that's really true before buying anything, needless to say!
Another string on this forum suggested looking under "optical drive" under "About This Mac" to find out this kind of thing. I see nothing that specifically says "optical drive," but under Hardware and Disc Burning, it says:
    HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B:
    Firmware Revision: 2.05
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    Media: No
Is this enough information for someone to please be able to tell me whether I do indeed need to buy an external disc drive before I can burn DVDs?
(And, if so, what kind of drive is recommended?)
Thanks in advance for any help.

While you can replace the intenal drive, opening up an eMac is not a trivial process and it's far easier to add an external drive. Go with Firewire rather than USB, even if your eMac is USB 2.0; support for Firewire under OS X is better and more stable. You can get a Firewire enclosure for around US$30 to $40 and a bare DVD-RW/CD-RW for about the same; or buy a complete system for around US$130 to $200 depending on features such as third-party burning software (Toast) or built-in label making with special DVD-R or CD-R blanks (LightScribe). OS X 10.3.3 and higher (which of course includes the 10.4 in your profile) includes native support for DVD-R burning, so you don't strictly need third-party software such as Toast, but Toast is more flexible than the built-in burner and allows for packing more data on a disc since Toast has better control over the disc's directory size. LightScribe is an appealing idea, but slow, and the blanks are expensive. When consideringf whether to roll your own, so to speak, with an enclosure and bare drive, don't overlook that you'll need a good-quality Firewire cable; cheap cables can cause a surprising amount of grief. Unless you have a bare DVD-RW drive handy, I persoanlly find the convenience of a commercial drive, with cable and power supply/cord already packaged together, outweighs the savings of assembling a drive yourself. I'm partial to LaCie D2 Firewire drives myself, but there are other models that work fine.

Any idea what it could be and how to fix it. I read on hear a lot to use disk utility. However when I run it it just freezes. When I turn that external drive off disk utility runs fine.

Your external drive is formatted FAT32 or FAT, or the Windows box would have a problem seeing it. (Unless you have MacDrive on that box, that is.)
If it is formatted FAT32 or FAT, you are NOT going to be able to use Disk Utility (or any other Mac utility) on that drive. Disk Utility doesn't do FAT.
I'd copy the contents of the drive elsewhere then start up Disk Utility first and then plug the drive into the Mac and format it FAT32 from Disk Utility. If that doesn't work, format it FAT32 on the Windows machine. Note: if this drive is larger than 32 GB, you're going to need to generate two or more partitions, as while WinXP can read FAT32 partitions larger than 32 GB, it can't create them. Macs and Linux boxes can create large FAT32 partitions. Second note: if the drive is smaller than 4 GB, you might want to think about formatting it FAT instead of FAT32. Indeed, Windows may insist. Do not let Windows format it NTFS; Macs can read NTFS volumes, but can't write to them.

  • Troubles booting eMac from external HDD over firewire

I have an MBP that had to be taken into the shop recently and will unfortunately be there for a week or more. Before I took it, however, I used SuperDuper to do a full backup to a partition on an external HDD (a WD "My Book Pro" 500GB drive with two partitions -- one for full backups and one for extra storage). For the time being, I have an eMac (PPC G4 700Mhz w/OS X 10.4.11) that I was hoping to use to boot from the FW drive.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it fly. I have the drive connected via FW and when I hold down option at boot it only shows the internal drive (I've also waited a few minutes and tried numerous refreshes -- no dice). When I look at Startup Disk in Systems Preferences it does show the FW drive as an available boot device. When I select it and reboot, however, I get a the system folder question mark icon for about two seconds and then the eMac boots from the internal.
I know the backup is fine because I was able to boot over FW from the MBP. The backed up data is system 10.4.11 as well.
    Any thoughts?

    Hey Dema,
Well the builds for Intel vs PPC Macs are very different. However this can be done as here:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006061610374449
and they talk about the earlier method using two partitions. They figured a way to do it without the partitioning.
