EMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.

eMac External LACIE DVD Drive not reading.
eMac 700 MHz running OS X 4.4
Came without DVD or modem internal
Has 256mb memory
Bought a used Lacie 1394 Firewire DVR External.
Was able to burn DVD’s and CD’s with Toast 6 Light.
Cannot find the “DVD Player” on the hard drive.
It will read data DVD.
eMac will not read any movies burnt or bought.
I was told I probably need more memory?
Thought running IDVD would fix the problem.
No Soap.
This machine was giving external modem problems before Tiger was installed.
Before we spend more money or just get ride of the eMac.
What is the DVD problem?
This same Lacie burner reads and writes DVD and CD fine with our iMac 450 DV 320mb memory. Running 9.2 and X.3

OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x natively support data burning to external DVD drives but video payback requires software such as iDVD which isn't installed by default on models without an internal DVD drive (the installer sees no internal drive and thinks it's unnecessary). Try downloading VLC Player and see if that will let you play movies.

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • HP external USB DVD Drive not recognized by computer.

Have HP Mini-210 and HP external USB DVD Drive.  When attached, the DVD drive lights and spins but computor will not recognize it.  When checking Device Manager, it says no driver for DVD drive..  I try to reinstall the driver, and then it says I have the best one already.  Device Manager continues to indicate that this drive has a problem.  Tried to download a driver from HP support and it was not available on line.
Copied install disk that came with drive thru dropbox cloud to move it onto the computor.  Was able to install the programs but still have no driver and unable to use DVD drive.

  • DVD drive not reading after Flip4Mac install

My DVD drive was reading commercial movie DVDs just fine until I installed the Flip4Mac new version.   I uninstalled Flip4Mac but it did not resolve the problem.   OSX.8.2      Any suggestions?

You can try resetting the SMC and pram. If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc, your lens might be dirty. I doubt very seriousley that installing Flip4Mac had anything to do with it. Slot loading SuperDrives aren't the heartiest animals around.

  • 10.0.4 can't read 10.4 install disk from external Lacie DVD drive.

    Quicksilver G4, 733.
Only has cd/r built in. Added Lacie d2 external DVD drive. Can read CD disks from this drive, but not the OS 10.4 Install drive. Downloaded drivers from Lacie, in case that would help, but can't open them because DMG images won't mount. (probably because 10.0.4 is too old, again)
Any help is appreciate, except for suggestions to send the DVD in for CDs, which seems very disappointing to me. We have the DVD drive, and it's working. There must be some way to install from this drive in OS 10.0.4, somehow.
    Thanks.

Thanks very much for the replies. Unfortunately, the Mac in question is a friend's 2 hours away, and bringing another mac along isn't an option. But, the emac cd, as well as a 10.2 powermac cd, both ran the installer / began the installation process without issues while testing on a lower end G4 at work. I am assuming I can use those to install 10.2.
The real issue is the fact that the firewire drive won't boot with the OS 10.4 dvd. I do get a "firewire" symbol on the screen when forcing to boot from the firewire port, but dvd drive light just "flickers", and doesn't read the disk.
I'm not sure if upgrading to 10.2, getting the drive to work by installing drivers, etc, will solve the issue of booting with the 10.4 disk. Wouldn't the 10.4 disk boot even if the operating system currently on the mac is 10.0 (or 8.5..even..). Makes me wonder if this computer is capable of booting from a firewire port. Have found conflicting information on that soo far.
Another option would be to replace the internal with a dvd/combo. And that would be another set of questions (any recomendations of a dvd internal I can pop into this model?).
    (733 Quicksilver model).
    Thanks again.

  • How do I install OSX10.5 using an external LaCie DVD Drive?

I purchased a External LaCie Drive recommended by Apple Genius Bar to affordably replace a dead internal DVD drive on an older iMac G4. I bought a family package of Leopard OSX10.5 and installed 10.5 on my main computer (G5) using its internal drive. Trying to install it on my G4 desktop using the external drive, the install program will not boot the G4 holding down the C key during start up. How do you boot up with an external drive so you can download a new system?

Thanks for entering this discussion. I booted with the option key down and it showed the only drive recognized for start up is my main HD even though I had the 10.5 Installation disk in the external DVD player burner.. That was the gist of my problem. My G4 will not recognize the USB External DVD player burner Drive for start up. Once booted up from my HD anything I put on the DVD drive is viewed- a CD, a DVD, an commercial movie, even OSX 10.5 Installation. But when I try to install it, it asks to "restart" but can't restart using a system other than the one on my HD which prevents the installation procedure from ocurring.
The ATA CD/DVD disk drive in my G4 will only play CDs and it is not recognized booting up with option key down when the DVD installation disk is in it. Do you know if Apple supplies OSX 10.5 in CD format? or a system startup I could use in my internal drive on CDs that if booted would allow me to go right to Install. If I could start up on a CD formated system, I think I could then open the installation disk on my external DVD Player and install it.

  • External cd/dvd drive not mounting on Macbook Pro with retina display, help?

Hi, I've recently purchased an amazon cd/dvd drive, this one to be exact http://www.amazon.co.uk/External-DVD-LIGHTSCRIBE-Burner-Netbook/dp/B00ABGW9J8, and it's not showing up on my desktop, sidebar or even the disc utility. When I plug it in the drive turns on and I can insert/eject discs, but it isn't mounting on my 10.9 macbook pro, any idea's how this can be fixed?

There have been numerous reports of problems with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models - both Retina and non-Retina. There was a 'fix' that was issued before ML was released that seemed to have solved some problems but not all. ML was supposed to be the real 'fix' and I've not seen too many post about USB 3.0 problems lately. It just seems as if some drives work and some don't. Apple did issue a tech note about using USB 3.0 ports - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12 - but I'm not sure that it will help you or not.
I've not read of any problems with TB storage devices, so you'll likely be OK there. It's just those USB 3.0 devices that seemed to be causing some kinks.

  • HP dv6 DVD drive not reading DVD's

Hi, my HP dv6 is currently running windows 7 and for some reason it will not read DVD's. It will read CD's just fine no matter what's on them. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver and find other sollutions and so far nothing has worked. Please help.

Please give us the full model number....dv6-xxxx? An optical drive has more than one laser and sometimes the CD laser is fine but the DVD laser is bad and the only way to fix that is to replace the drive. Are you still under warranty? The only other thing you can try is a dvd laser cleaner disk like this:

This would be a long shot but might work.

  • Dvd drives not reading

Our dvd drive on our Power Mac 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core intel. The drive is an Optiarc dvd rw ad-717a: sometimes will not read inserted discs. These discs work ok when tried on our I mac. Other discs work fine. This has occurred with discs that have bee writen in the drive as well as supplied discs.Help would be appreciated.

Not Sure what you exactly mean but if the Mac can't read the CDs it has written then there is a problem with the optical drive itself. If the CD is detected on teh computer but will not play it might be something to do with the dvd player app on your mac. Try to download VLC for you mac and see if it can read content (assuming it is a video or something). Cheers!

  • DVD Drive not reading CD's

    Hi Everyone,
I have noticed that my DVD Drive is unable to read any of my CD's but all my DVD's are read perfectly by the drive. I have enabled AHCI and installed Intel Rapid Storage drivers post that. What seems to be the problem? Is it because of AHCI? Are there anyone who faces the same thing after enabling AHCI?
I cant deny the fact that my read write and boot performance have improved a lot after enabling AHCI. Valuable suggestions and feedback really appreciated.
    Regards
    Rahul

The easiest and simplest thing to do would be to try another DVD drive that you know works. That would answer your questions very quickly. I have seen DVD drives that would read and/or write DVD's and not CD's or the other way around.

  • Envy dvd drive not reading media. Any ideas?

The dvd/bluray drive is not reading any media (CD, DVD or Bluray).  Is there a fix, or is hardware related?

I have the same condition.  Envy 17" i7 is 18 months old and very light use.  Maybe 4 hours on dvd/cd drive.  Just put a movie in and drive is stuttering, picture is a garbelling collage, but audio is mostly clear.  the last dvd, a training video that was fine 3 months ago is somewhat corrupt and the drive is doing it's stuttering intermitently.  What to do?  Is there a test disk and/or analytic software that can determine the issue?  The Drive is an HP BDDVDRW CA30P.  The driver files are up to date according to the MS on-board search tool.
    Thanks for advice!

  • DVD drive not reading

in the last week my dvd drive has stopped reading any disk i put in there.  it tries to read it for a few seconds then ejects it.

Often a good lens cleaning will restore functionality.  Use a lens cleaning DVD or take a fine microfiber cloth (Eye glasses cleaning cloth) wrap it around a business card and carefully insert it into the slot.
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a Free evaluation.
    Ciao.

This happened after I (stupidly) tried to install a hard drive behind my CD/DVD player on the same ribbon/cable(where the zip drive usually lives). Did I somehow manage to fry the ribbon?
When I put a CD in it spins up & then does nothing. I've scoured the discussions but have found nothing similar. It is getting power. I have reinstalled the zip drive & put the hard drive in its own enclosure.
Is it the ribbon/cable or do I need a driver? If Driver then where do I find it.
Thanks for any help - I'm pretty savy but I'm stumped on this one...

    Hi-
Check your connections, making sure the ribbon is firmly and completely connected to the drive.
Resetting the NVRAM may help. Boot into Open Firmware- restart and press commandoption+of. Then at the prompt, type reset-nvram, and press return. Then type reset-all and press return. The machine should boot. You may need to reset the time, startup disk, and possibly some other user settings, but otherwise no big changes.

You could try Patchburn, to see if it will generate the device profile. Patchburn is free, and at the following:

  • External Lacie DVD burner not being recognized

Maybe I'm doing things in the wrong order - I put a Sony DVD into the external burner and then click on the burn tab in DVD Studio Pro. But I get a message saying to put a burnable DVD into the optic drive. When I put the DVD into the internal drive, it's recognized. I never had a problem with the external burner. Am I doing something wrong?

I also have a Lacie burner and although they claim that one no longer needs to download their disc recording support with 10.4 or later, I had to install it because my system (10.5 at the time) wouldn't recognize it (if you recall, Mac OS did not recognize or support external burning in the old days, but is supposed to now - for whatever reason, it did not on mine without installing the Lacie software).
So, you might try first to see if your burner is listed in HD/Library/DiscRecording/Device Profiles. Mine has a file there: LaCie.drprofile from 2008. If you don't have a file there, try going to their support site and downloading the DiscRecording Support; it's an old file, but I've not had a problem with mine.

  • DVD Drive not reading discs

Hi, I have a Pioneer DVD-R DVR-117D superdrive that came with my computer from apple. I have a project that I am trying to put onto a DVD-R dual layer disc but my drive just ejects the disc after attempting to read it for a little while. Any suggestions are appreciated

The DVR-117D is in reality a DVR-108 with some functions either slowed down or disabled by Apple. One of the disabled functions was double layer burning.
If you wish to restore this ability, you'll need to flash the drive to a DVR-108 with the firmware available from Pioneer here.
You can get instructions for doing this at XLR8yourmac.com, but some of the links on that page are outdated. The flash utility mentioned is now at version 2.2, and the firmware you should be using is the one I linked to above.
Now, you've stated that you bought DVD-R DL, which this drive won't burn. It will burn the DVD+R DL, though. In any event, Apple specifically recommends that DVD-R DL not be used.
