EMac - How do I get past the password and reload the OS ?

I recently bought an emac on ebay but when it arrived there was a password on it.
The seller did not know the password when I contacted them but instead they sent me the OS 10.3 CDs so that I can reformat the hard drive and start fresh.
I have loaded the CD and tried rebooting and holding down the 'c' key but the emac still boots to the OS X password screen.
Can anybody tell me how I can get the emac to boot from the CD so that I can unlock the computer and reload the OS ?
Any help appreciated otherwise I have an expensive paperweight on my desk !
Thanks.

10.4 is a little more demanding than 10.3.
10.4 requires 256MB RAM 10.3 requires 128MB, and as you may guess 10.5 Leopard requires 512 MB of RAM.
So you have twice as much RAM as 10.4 requires and your eMac has the capacity to use double that to a maximum of 1024MB but that will not be necessary, but the capacity is there if you need it.
Obviously 10.4 is more RAM intensive though well within your eMac's ability.
If you do go for Tiger, you may find the 'widgets' slow things down, so switching them off may be a good idea. Widgets are network aware data collectors that feed in the latest stock prices or the local weather etc, but are really just gimmicky trivia.
10.3 Panther was a huge improvement over 10.2 Jaguar
10.4 Tiger was not such a leap compared to Panther, but as I said there are more applications available for Tiger these days than for Panther.
I am trying to be objective here. Personally I am still on Panther as I don't regard Tiger as significantly different though in certain areas it is better.
Good luck with your choice.

    Hello Cocoscafe
If you have a rescue email address setup in your Apple ID profile, then you can reset the security questions. You would need to know those answers to get passed the screen to log in and verify.

I can't change my Apple ID.  It would mess all my stuff up.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're using iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

You may have to do this several times.
Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • How can I get past the white screen?

When I start my iMac I see a message that my start up disk is full and that I need to delete files. After I type in my user name and password, all I see if a white screen. This problem started today. The error message about the start up disk started two days ago, and when I looked at the disk, I saw that over half of it has files described as "other". The hard drive is 250 GB. I have Time Machine backups but I don't know how to get to them to help me. So, I guess that I have two questions: how do I get past the white screen, and what are the files that are catogoraized as other? Thanks.

I did not put the OS info in my question because I am not sure what I have. I upgraded to Lion so that I could use the cloud between my devices, however I do not know the number.
Apple menu item->About this Mac and the version is listed there. Click on that and get the build number. Click again and get the machine's serial number.
I am stuck on the white screen. Any other advice?
Start with a google search for white screen mac. This one might do the trick: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-desktops/138137-imac-wont-get-passed-whit e-screen.html

Have you tried pulling the batteries out of the damaged ones so that they are completely off; then shutdown your Mac Mini via the power button on the back right. Turn on your new keyboard and trackpad then power your Mini back up? The auto detection should find your new keyboard and trackpad.

how do i get past the "do not have sufficient privileges" error message installing flashplayer? i've googled the problem and seen the other solutions and for some reason cannot get any of them to work for me.

I've recommended several things here in the forums and like you, I've seen zero success.
Run as Administrator = no luck.
Take ownership of the c drive = no luck.
Create a new (admin) account = no success.
I've even seen one poster who reformatted and reinstalled Window 7, and no luck.
Frankly, I'm at a total loss.

No, because iPads do not run Mac OS X. They run iOS.

I don't use other i-devices. How do I get past the "Set up iCloud on a device ..." redirect to set up iCloud? I want to use icloud for a calendar, storage of my photos and ebooks plus the Calibre reader app with chrome browser. OS is windows 7, but I will change to windows 8 soon.

You need to set up an iCloud account before you can back it up. And you back it up directly from the device - iCloud.com has nothing to do with it. Follow the instructions in the link below to set up your iCloud account and to set up Automatic Backups:

Upon start up I get a "start up disk full message, delete files". Now on startup I only get a blue screen. How do I get past the blue screen and how do I delete files.

That;s really not enough free space... you can use a tools such as OmniDiskSweeper to find out where your large files reside and begin pruning (or copying to an external if they're files that you want to keep).
One thing is certain - if you're going to continue your current usage you're certainly going to need to install a larger boot drive.
