Emac, imac, ibook installs

I have an emac(parent's) and an imac(mine) and am about to buy an ibook(for college), none of these have Tiger 10.4 on them, either Jaguar or Panther. If I get Tiger 10.4 to update them, will I be able to use it for 3 different computers, and if so, will the imac or ibook, since they are older, still run smoothly? Also, I am more than likely going to get Microsoft Office(eww) because I need it for school, can I install this on all 3, and will they all run smoothly still? Thank you.
imac, emac, ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

My husband recently installed (erase and install) Tiger on our 2 800mHz eMacs and we couldn't be happier. Both got iLife '06 at the same time and mine got PS elements4. Both of us feel that there is a noticeable increase in speed and we have had zero problems. Buy the family versions and upgrade them all. We had been stuck in 10.2.8 for years with 25,000 pix in iPhoto 2 and were afraid to upgrade due to all the problems we had heard about newer versions of iPhoto and losing album structure and so on. We aquired a used 12" iBook recently with panther and tried iLife '06 on it first. We copied our iPhoto libraries to an external drive, dropped them into the empty pictures folder, then opened iPhoto which proceeded to convert the libraries to version 6. Guess what? None of the probs we had heard about happened, and now weboth have identical copies of iPhoto on each of our computers.

You bet. Besides that you'd be violating the software terms of agreement you agreed to by installing an OS on several machines at the same time.

  • Printer Sharing with eMac, iMac, and iBook not working

Hello, everyone. I hope you guys can help me out with this:
I have an Epson Stylus CX4600 hooked up to my eMac via USB. My eMac prints fine with it. The eMac is getting its internet via an Ethernet wire going downstairs into my Linksys Router, which sends my Shaw internet to my iBook, my iMac, and my eMac.
I want to allow the iMac and iBook to access the printer over the network directly, so I can just print from those computers and have it come out the eMac printer.
I've looked at many articles on this. So far I've installed the drivers on all computers, plus they can all network to each other over File Sharing, so they are connected.
But I haven't been able to print yet. The most I've been able to do is get the files I try to print from the iBook and iMac to show up on the eMac, in its printer queue. Only it didn't show up for a LONG time. And when it did, the jobs automatically stopped and everytime I clicked start, it would automatically switch back to stopped again. The files would not print.
At this point, I want to get the iBook connected to it first. If I can do that, I'll try the iMac. But the iBook is first priority. I've tried making it connect to the Printer using IPP (IP Printing), and the result was... what I explained in the above paragraph. I also tried just ordinary Printer Sharing, but it said something close to this:
"Unable to locate eMac.local, Unknown host."
That hardly makes sense, because at that time I also tried getting the iBook connected to the eMac over File Sharing which worked. For some reason, the "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" files don't show up in my Network thing when I connect to them, or even when they're not connected. HOWEVER, I think they did at one point. I could swear I saw "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" in the Servers folder in the Network section of the iBook at one point. But it's no longer there.
Please help. I've described my problem as well as possible. What a long post. If there's any way to make my eMac, iMac, and iBook be able to print through my Epson Stylus CX4600 at any time directly, then I'll do it.
    Help!

Yes. I did say that my eMac, iMac, and iBook are all
connected to the internet and networked to each other
over the Linksys router. I believe the router is
still on factory settings because we never really
"set" or programmed anything with it.
Mac OS 9.2.2 on the iMac, Mac OS X 10.4.8 on the
    other two. IP addresses?
192.168.1.100 is what I would use to connect to the
    eMac from the other computers.
This is the eMac's IP, correct? Did you type it into Network, or was it assigned by the router's DHCP?
192.168.1.101 is what I would use to connect to the
    iBook from the other computers.
This is the iBook's IP, right? Again, fixed or DHCP?
192.168.1.102 is what I would use to connect to the
    iMac from the other computers.
    Same for this IP.
The iBook, as I've said, is wired. No wireless
    connections to speak of.
Okay. Now, if the router is handing out IP addresses via DHCP, what range was it configured for? My Linksys, for example, is configured to hand out IPs in the range 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254. It has the IP 192.168.0.1, so the IPs 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.9 are available for me to hand out as fixed IPs. If I was to hand out 192.168.0.100 as a fixed IP, the router's DHCP server would have a potential problem, as it might hand out that address too, and only one device can have a particular IP address on a particular network. If your router is handing out 192.168.1.100, .101, and .102 via DHCP, you could and probably do have a conflict if you've got those addresses set up as fixed IPs. In particular, if you have anything else on the network, including Bonjour-enabled devices such as printers, you're likely to have a conflict.
Best way to resolve a conflict, if any:
1 set all the Macs to either DHCP, or if fixed IPs are required, to a fixed IP outside the range of the DHCP range on the router. (Or you could just turn off DHCP on the router.)
2 check the router to be sure that DHCP is set the way you want it, and the DHCP pool is what you think it is.
    3 shut down the Macs.
4 turn off the router, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.
5 turn the Macs back on, one at a time.
On my Linksys, the way to set the DHCP pool is simple:
1 log into the router. (My router IP: 192.168.0.1. Yours would be 192.168.1.1.) Hit the 'Setup' tab. Verify the gateway IP. (Should be the router's IP. If it's not, something very strange is happening.) Verify the start of the DHCP pool. Verify that DHCP is on (or off, as you want). Verify the end of the DHCP pool. (My start is 192.168.0.10, and there are 245 IPs in the pool, so the end is 192.168.0.254. If I changed the number of IPs to 200, the end of the pool would be 192.168.0.209, and I'd be able to set the IPs 192.168.0.200 to 254 as fixed IPs if I wanted.) If your router allows for IPs to be reserved, you can set up reserved IPs for one or more of your Macs. (A reserved IP is an IP the router holds for a specific device. The network card in each computer has a specific MAC address; if that address is registered with the router, then every time that computer is turned on and connected it will get the IP that was reserved for it... so long as that IP is in the DHCP range and DHCP is turned on. Think of it as a fixed IP without your having to actually fix the IP.)

  • Not All iPad PDFs in Various Collections Appear in OS X Maverick iMac iBooks app.

I have a number of PDFs on my iPad categorized into a number of collections. After I upgraded my iMac from Mountain Lion to Maverick, some PDFs from one of my iPad collections ("Manuals") automatically appeared in the iMac iBooks app, but not all. How do I fix this?

    Thanks for your reply King_Penguin
Re your first point - 'Sync collections' was ticked in both the iPad and Mac versions of iBooks prior to these problems occurring.
Why have recently purchased or installed books been moved to iCloud and moved off my iPad and iMac when previously they were there in my iBooks library collections? They were books I'd read or were in the process of reading.
More confusing is that on my Mac in iBooks there are books that are fully downloaded and not in iCloud yet the same books in iBooks on the iPad are not downloaded and are in iCloud. After I sync this hasn't changed. To my mind this means that sync isn't working properly or that maybe iCloud has somehow been activated on one device and not on the other?
Why should I have to re-download books that were already present in my iBooks library on Mac and iPad prior to my upgrades to Yosemite, iOS 8 and the iBooks  apps?
I have to reiterate that I do not and will not use iCloud and for 2 reasons: it is not secure and Apple uses push marketing to make it difficult for you to not use it.

  • Will eMac or iBook DVDs intall Tiger on other machines ?

My Tiger DVD has a crack in it and it wont mount, and I need to install Tiger on a new drive.
Can I use a eMac or iBook Restore DVD to install TIger on a G4 or a Powerbook ?
I wouldn't necessarily need to boot from the DVD as I have Tiger on my boot drive/s, unless the DVDs require you to boot from them to be able to install....so I don't know if there's an issue.
(I just dont want to have to buy another set of Tiger DVDs since Leopard is coming out soon.)
    Thanks in advance.

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You could clone the bootable drive to the new drive with a backup utility like Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
I don't think that a OS DVD that came with a computer will allow you to install on another type of computer. Although I don't think there's a hard and fast rule about that. Typically the restore DVD will restore the OS and all the bundled applications and hardware specific drivers.

  • 10.4.8 Versions...emac, imac, powermac, etc.

First off.....excuse my naivete! I'm not up on all the Mac lingo yet, but I like to think I'm getting there.
I'm new to this whole Mac thing and although I find it quite exciting to use and learn, one thing stands out in my mind. Why are there so many different versions of the same software 10.4.8? Emac version, imac version, g5 version, etc.
I have a G3 800 ibook, bought off ebay recently. Came with 10.4.8 installed, but no discs. Not a big deal.
DH bought a G4 400 tower, again off ebay. Again, came with 10.4.8 installed, but no discs. Not a big deal.
    Or so we thought.
We want to do a complete fresh re-install on his tower. But searching on ebay is getting frustrating. So many versions, and all different prices.
Is there a version out there than can be used across all types & kinds of macs? Or, can you use a version of software that doesn't correspond with your system? {For example...could we use an 'emac' version on my ibook and DH's tower?} I've found 'full version' discs that are priced high. And then there are 'emac version' discs that are considerably cheaper
I'd rather not have to purchase a set of discs for my ibook and another complete set of discs for his tower.
Sorry so long and winded, but this topic isn't something I've been able to find in the FAQ's or previous postings.
    TIA for any answers!!
    canadianmom....

Since you are purchasing used Macs and even though these Macs have the latest Tiger version installed - 10.4.8, it isn't a good idea to purchase a used Mac without the original install package that shipped with the Mac when new along with the Tiger install package used to upgrade the Mac to Tiger (which should be a retail install package) or just the Tiger retail install package.
A new Mac ships with additional software not included with the Tiger retail install package and if a used Mac was upgraded to Tiger over the OS and additional software included when the Mac was purchased and you need to reformat the hard drive for whatever reason, you will not be able to re-install any of the additional software included with this Mac when new and if the Tiger retail install package isn't included either, you can't run Disk First Aid repair, reinstall individual software included on the retail install package or perform an Archive & Install or an Erase & Install if needed.
So this is a big deal.
The Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac when new is model and build specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac unless the Mac is the same model and build included with the install package.
A Tiger retail install package can be used to install Tiger on any Mac model that meets the minimum system requirements but does not include any of the additional software provided on the install package that ships with a new Mac. No iLife package, etc.
Be careful when purchasing a Tiger install package via eBay. You need what is called a Tiger retail install package but a single user copy can be used to install Tiger on a single Mac only.
As already provided, you need to purchase a Tiger Family Pack which allows you to install and use Tiger on up to 5 Macs as long as they are in the same household by Apple's definition of household.

  • Imac's Installation  CD

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how many Installation CD's/DVD does am iMAC G5 has? just 2? my iMac G3 and iBook used to have a bunch

    Hi jeshua.
Your iMac G3 and iBook G3 came with CD's. Your iMac G5 comes with installation DVD's. You can fit as much on one single sided DVD as you can fit on 6 or 7 CD's. So you would need 12 to 14 CD's to equal two DVD's at full capacity.
    Cheers

  • IBook installation problem

    Hi folks,
I have a 12" iBook G3 700Mhz and I'd like to install Tiger on it. I have the installation DVD but the iBook only has a CD Rom drive...
Any suggestions as to how I can do this? (I also have an intel iMac). Any way of transferring the DVD onto a CD??
    Any help would be helpful,
    Nick

You can use the iMac and FireWire Target Disk Mode to install on your iBook.
Check out F.J.'s instructions on how to do it here:
    http://www.oreillynet.com/mac/blog/2005/05/thecats_mustachesinstalling.html
I always attach the FireWire cable before starting up.
Make sure the iBook has enough RAM (256 MB minimum) and hard drive space (5 to 6 GB free after installation) to run Tiger. Personally, I decided to leave my iBook G3 800 MHz in Panther and bought an iBook G4 with a 60 GB hard drive in order to upgrade to Tiger.
    Good luck!

Brick and mortar stores will not carry the disc, you can get it online on Apple's online store. If you are in the USA the link is:

  • EMac to iBook

My mom has a eMac and I have a iBook, there is a game on her computer what is too big for me transfer on a disc (1.44GB), but I heard I could use a USB plug or a Ethernet plug to connect the computers and transfer it that way, is that true? If so how do I do it?

    Hello,
This procedure is simple and may take some time. Please make sure you follow these instructions carefully so you won't have to start over again.
You have two options. You can start your iBook in Target Disk Mode and just drop the game on there (faster method)
** PLEASE NOTE: If you choose this method, you need a 6 - pin to 6 - pin Firewire cord. **
    ETHERNET:
    1. Go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver
    A) Make sure the computer does not go to sleep.
    2. Go to Network -> Click Ethernet.
    A) Click Appletalk.
    B) Click Enable Appletalk.
    C) Click Apply
** Now appletalk is on. Make sure you do this for each computer.**
    3. Go back to System Preferences -> Click Sharing -> There should be something where you share your stuff. I don't remember what it should say.
    4. Double Click Your HD -> Click Network -> Servers
    5. Double Click Your Laptop
    A) Enter your computer information.
    B) Click your HD's Name.
** Now your HD should be mounted. **
    6. Drag and Drop the game on to your hard drive. You can double click the hard drive and drop your things on there.
    7. Your Done!
    Firewire:
    1. Shut down your laptop.
    2. Connect your firewire cable to the firewire port on both computers.
    3. Turn on your computer holding the letter T.
    4. You should see your Hard Disk Drive pop up on the desktop on your mothers computer.
    5. Find where you would like to save your game.
    6. Drop it in there / Your done.
As you can see the firewire method is a little bit less painless, but you would have to purchase one if you don't have one.
    Good Luck,
    Grant

  • IPad 4 w iBooks syncs Books via iCloud but not pdf's on my iMac iBooks

Why dont the Pdf's come over from iBooks on the iMac to the iPad4?

They won't go via iCloud, only ibooks that you buy/download from iTunes will potentially show (whilst they remain in the store) in the iBooks app on your iPad for redownloading - if you want the PDFs in the iBooks app on your iPad then you will need to connect the iPad to your Mac and select it in iTunes, and use its Books tab to select and sync them to it.

  • File sharing imac/ibook on belkin router

Hello, I have a imac, with 10.3.9 software, also a ibook with 10.4.5 software.
The imac is connected through the internal network card to a Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router. The ibook is connected to the router with the internal airport extreme wireless network card. Both units can access the internet on the cable modem connected to the router. When I try to access the other the computer for file sharing it requires a password that I do not know. I have set both units up for file sharing on the Systems Perference
page. The login asked for a username and password, but gives me a error
when I try to get access. I want to transfer file between the two computers.
    Any help???
    Steve

If I do try the password used for setting the preferences or
    loading software updates...
That is the password that you need. Remember if you are sitting at the iMac trying to access the iBook you will need to enter the password that you use on the iBook not the one that you use on the iMac.

  • When I try to install the new version of Flash Player on my iMac, Adobe installer rejects apple ID

Adobe installer claims my Apple ID is incorrect when I try to install the new Flash Player.  iMac + OS Mavericks.  I have tried it many times.  Same ID works on two iPads, iTunes, etc. and on the iMac whenever it is asked for, other than with Flash Player installer.  Aggro+++++++

OK, thanks for answering, but after reading all the instructions and help on Adobe website, it was clear that it was my OS user ID that was wanted, but that kept being rejected, too.  So today I contacted Apple support and it took a half hour to correct the problem, which was with the original ID——everything had to be reset, e.g. new ID, keychain reset, etc. and then I was able to get the new Flash Player.  It is still STRANGE to me that nowhere else did I have a problem, but it seems it was a glitch with Mavericks and my computer.
Good to know it was not Adobe…….
    Thank you,
    Patricia

  • Transfering books from IMAC ibooks to my Ipad ibooks

Since upgrading to Mavericks and getting ibooks on my imac. I have not figured out how to get the book on my ipad. my books do not show up iitunes anymore???
    Help !!

Your iBooks do not show up in iTunes any longer on your Mac.  They are now in iBooks, a new Mac application.  if your iBooks is signed in correctly (look under Store in iBooks' menu to make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID and password you use on your iPad), then your iBooks should be both on your Mac and your iPad.
Make sure both iBooks (on your iPad and your Mac) are set up to download purchases automatically.

However, I only get a black screen, and I can't get the Windows 7 installer to run. I thought I have some problems with my install disk so I used virtual box to see if the dvd works. When I used it on virtual box, the installer started and everything went fine. But when I use this for bootcamp, it did not work. I tried resetting everything, using a different installation disk, redo the partitioning, or boot up the disk by pressing the option key at the startup and selecting the disc. But none of them worked. I don't know why this is not working, since windows installed without any problems on my macbook pro retina. If someone was in the same situation or knows a solution for this, please help me. Again it is the Late 2009 iMac 21.5 inch model.
