EMac - keeps freezing.

Hi, im new to this forum. im 15, and i have an eMac (MAC OSX 10.3.9.)
My computer, freezes every like 10 minutes, it seems to freeze alot when im in Adobe Photoshop CS2, and when im on Safari, or even in general, it just freezes so much. The funny thing is I just reformatted my computer with a hardrive, and my computer will NOT stop. I have to keep turning it off, then turning it on. Im about to break it, its frustrating me very much. When i go to software update, i try to download like security, and new versions of MAC OSX, and my computer starts to download it, then it just freezes. Should i bring it to the Apple Store? Please help me :[?

Jason's tip on the repiar extension for 1.25 GHz eMacs is the first thing to check, followed if indicated by contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to arrange the repair.
Should your eMac not fall into the range of those known to be affected by the bad capacitor problem, there are a few other things you can try.
Open Disk Utility and check the drive's SMART status at the bottom of the window. It should read "verified"; anything else indicates a drive problem. You can boot from the OS X Install disc to run Repair Disk as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck. If that reports making repairs, repeat Repair Disk until it delivers a clean bill of health.
Try disconnecting all third-party peripherals and then Start Up in Safe Mode and see if stability returns. If it does, that suggests a problem with a third-party kernel extension. Post back if that troubleshooting step works for you and we can give you suggestions on how to find the offending extension.
If you normally shut down an OS X Mac overnight or leave it in system sleep, the cron maintenance tasks cannot run in their nominal 3 am timeframe. (Display-only sleep allows the maintenance tasks to run). You can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a weekend or two a month; you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Panther version of OnyX with 10.3.x).
If you've updated to 10.3.9 via Software Update, it may help to download and run the stand-alone Mac OS X Combo Update 10.3.9, runnig Disk Utility> Repair Permissions as a precaution before and after.

  • My emac keeps freezing!!! any help please

Hello, my emac keeps freezing. I tried to use the first aid and got this message.
    "Repair attempted on two volumes,
    1 HFS volume repaired
1 volume could not be repaired"
I can't reistall the Os because my installation disk is scratched.
    any help please

You should check to see if your capacitors are bad. My eMac started having this exact same problem about a month ago and I finally just took it apart the other day and looked at it and there's two or three bad capacitors (bulging, one slightly leaking brown), so I'm going to have my much-more-experienced-with-soldering dad try to replace them with ones we ordered. Hopefully they work!
I'd check and see if this is the problem, then if it is, you will need to either replace the bad capacitors yourself, get someone experienced to do it, or buy a new board, which may cost far more than the eMac would be worth if it was working right anyway.
Of course, you can just scrap it and keep the hard drive and DVD drive and RAM. eMacs are getting kinda old nowadays. I went from an eMac 1.25 GHz to a Mac mini 2.0 GHz and it is sooooooooo much better. No more Flash headaches (or at least less of them), and everything runs so much smoother.
    Best of luck.

  • My G4 emac keep freezing

My G4 emac usb 2.0 keep freezing constantly without reason, only the mouse moves and for the rest just freeze, I gotta restart it from the power bottom. Could anyone give me a hint to fix it.

Hi Hugo, how long does it run before doing this?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Emac keeps freezing....soooo annoying

Ive had my emac for about 2 years now and recently it has started freezing constantly. It freezes to the point that nothing works. I cant even option apple esc or anything. All I can do is shut it off. It started only when I was online .....but now it will freeze while sleeping so when I come back it will just just wake up and nothing will work. Most of the time I can still move my mouse around the screen but I cant do anything else. Any suggestions out there?

The power and video are the main symptoms mentioned in the official notice, but if the capacitor are bulging (open teh battery comaprtment on the bottom and check; see eMac - Do-It-Yourself), that would also account for random freezing.
It would be prudent to run some checks to see if the problem isn't a software issue, thorugh. Does the compouer behave better if you Start Up in Safe Mode?
Does it behave normally if you create a new administrative user account solely for troubleshooting and log onto that account?
If you normally shut down an OS X Mac overnight or leave it in system sleep, the cron maintenance tasks cannot run in their nominal 3 am timeframe. (Display-only sleep allows the maintenance tasks to run). Tiger 10.4.2 and later will force the maintenance tasks to run after sufficient time has elapsed. Otherwise, you can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a weekend or two a month; you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Tiger version of OnyX with 10.4.x).
Hvae you tried any of the tips in Travis A. - Regular Maintenance / General Troubleshooting? How about Gulliver - OS X System maintenance?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

  • Internet keeps freezing

I have an eMac 1.25 ghz with 768 mb ram. I am running os x 10.5.8 and safari 5.0 I connect to Internet by a cable through my new time capsule. My Internet keeps freezing crashing the browser. safari and firefox are both effected. While this is happening I can access Internet fine with iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Any ideas? I also can't back up using time machine.

The first thing to eliminate is a serious manufacturing defect that affected eMac 1.25g units. See if your serial number fails in these ranges:
    • G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    • YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    • VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
If it does, your logic board could have a near-fatal problem. Your serial number is inside the optical drive door. If the unit is an Apple refurb, it will not be numbered in those ranges but could have the problem.
The logic board issue was mostly bad capacitors. You can see some through the RAM door on the bottom on the case. Here's a image showing a good and bad capacitor seen through the eMac RAM door:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/houlihan/146258714/
Apple had a Repair Extension Program to fix these at no cost to the owner but it expired over a year ago. Unless NZ has a law forcing manufactures to stand by products with manufacturing defects, you may be facing a repair whose cost exceeds the values of an eMac on the used market (needs a new logic board).
So we need to get this possible factor out of the way before trying to sort any software issues.

  • Emac Screen Freezes

    I really need help...
My Emac 1 gig of ram is not working well. The screen keeps freezing. When you move things alot the picture gets stuck. Ex. When I save, add bookmarks, watch quicktime videos, moving any programs left to right really fast it will freeze. It's more of a graphical problem.
I have to restart my computer every 10 minutes and it's really annoying. I've restored mac os x and basicly got rid of everything but it still not working properly.

It could be hardware, ram or hard drive. It could still be software, an archive & install would preserve items from your old user.
First, create a new account, name it "test" and see if you still get freezes in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
    Next run "Apple Hardware Test":
If CD's came with your computer it is on a CD labeled "Hardware Test" To test with CD, insert the CD and restart holding the "c" key until you see the spinning gear.
    If DVD insert DVD then:
    1. Turn on or restart the computer.
    2. Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manger screen appearsThe Startup Manager scans for available volumes.
    3. Optional: Clicking the circular arrow rescans for other volumes, including NetBoot Server volumes. You can eject any disc in the drive or open an empty tray-loading drive by holding down the Command (Apple) and Period (.) keys. The Command-Period key combination will also close the drive. After inserting a CD capable of starting up your computer, you could rescan for volumes.
    4. Click the startup volume you want to use. "Hardware Test"
If hardware test does not mount or does not run bring the computer to Authorized Apple Repair.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • My time machine keeps freezing when I am backing up

I have recently purchased a seagate 1.5TB external hard drive and am trying to back up my computer using time machine.
    My compute is 56GB large.
I have tried 3 times and have been forced to stop it everytime because it keeps freezing.
    What should I do?
It says it is compaitble with USB 2.0 and 3.0
My MBP is from late 2011 and I think it is 3.0 yet when it does backup a bit it doesnt do it particularly fast then it pauses.

If you have a late 2011 MBP, then you have USB 2.0 ports. Only the mid-2012 models came with USB 3.0 ports. Is your Seagate a USB 3.0 model? It should be backward compatible with your machine; you just won't acheive USB 3.0 speeds. How did you format your drive? To use with Time Machine, it must be formated as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
I'm suspecting (and rather hoping) that it's just a formatting problem. Try using Disk Utility to reformat the drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to work with TM.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

Downloaded new iOS for iPhone 5. Now the handset is running hot, keeps freezing on different screens, won't charge on official charger ( only charges on crap poundland one) and battery is loosing 1% every two minutes! I've closed all apps and reset the complete phone but no luck. Any one know what else I can try apart from a new phone?

I have done a factory reset at 45% battery. After the reset it's still hot and at 35% now

  • My iTunes keeps freezing during syncing and wont let me put any music on. What do I do?

I have a PC and the newest iPod touch. I was receiving error message -54 while syncing recently so i checked on this site and found out that some of my files could be locked. Sure enough I went through all of my files, found and deleted all the locked ones and wiped my itunes. I then kept getting a error message telling me that the sync session couldn't start. Then I wiped my ipod and uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes multiple times. But each time I try to sync my ipod, itunes freezes and I have to restart the entire program. I am at a complete loss as to what to do. I have tried everything I could, and have had no luck. The program keeps freezing on me and doens't allow me to sync my ipod or my ipad, so it would seem to be a problem with my itunes but I don't know what to do, nevermind how to fix it.

You will lose all of the content on the ipod, but you will have to restore.  If you cannot then follw this:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
Your "friend" is not much of a friend.

  • MACBOOK Air/ OS Lion Keeps Freezing and restarting "because of an error"

    Hi,
My Macbook keeps freezing - keyboard and touchpad do not respond and then after a few seconds it restarts. A Screen comes on to say that it restarted "because of a problem" Often it freezes at login. It has frozen at least 6 times as I type this. This is the console diagnostic for the last hang. Anyone advice?
    Thank you,
    Al.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.
