EMac.......mini.........eMac.........mini

I'm in the market for a new Mac. I'm a teacher who has a little grant $ left to spend on a desktop. I had my mind set on the eMac. 64mb vidoe memory, all in one design etc.
But then the mini got updated. 512mb mem. built in blue tooth, built in wireless, superdrive. However only 32mb video mem.
I've got an old Apple blue and white 17 inch CRT I could use with the mini, along with an white Apple keyboard and mouse.
But, that 64mb video mem. is so hard to compete with. That along with a faster "desktop" hard drive.
But......all the reports of video problems on the eMac, have me nervous.....
This post probably won't last long, but what are the opinions. Are the video problems that prevalent? I know this is a forum to discuss problems people are having and I am keeping that in mind.
Sway, me..........sway me now. I'd like to purchase a computer within the next few days.
Thanks for any enlightenment,
Dan

Thank you both for your comments.
The iMac is unfortunately not a possibility, because it is a bit more expensive than either the eMac or Mac Mini. I've got $650 worth of grant funding to spend. The extra cost for the $799 eMac, or the $699 Mac Mini would already come out of my pocket.
Which means, if I go with the eMac, which is my first choice, I'd have to spend $150 of my own money to purchase it, and then spend another $50 to add an additional 512 of memory. So, quickly the added cost to me is already there.
This computer wouldn't be for home use, I am required to use it and have it in my classroom.
My hesitation with the eMac is still the video problems. Have either of you experienced these first hand?
The Mac Mini's video memory is something which I am concerned with. My G4, old Sawtooth, has been upgraded with a Radeon 9000 Pro 64 mb card, 1.2 ghz Gigadesigns processor, Pioneer Superdrive, 896 mb of ram and one 120 + one 40 gb internal HDD So I'm used to having a 64mb video card as well as a 7200 rpm drive and a bunch of memory. The eMac has all of those things, plus a faster processor.
The Mac Mini would have a faster processor but a slower HDD, less video memory etc, than what I'm used to.
The eMac display is unfortunately making me nervous.
What model of eMac do either of you have, what year, and what if any problems with the display have either of you had?
Also let me know if you've never had display problems, and you think I'm just being overly concerned.
iMac, no can do....wish I could.

  • Emacs AND emacs-nox

I'd like to use on the same machine both emacs and emacs-nox. But they are mutually exclusive. A proximate cause is that they both give
the same name, 'emacs', to the resulting executable. I presume there are no fundamental conflicts between the X and the no-X versions
of Emacs, and I'd be perfectly happy to run emacs-nox under a different name. How can I get it my way?
The reason I want emacs-nox is that I need a just-in-time, disposable, mini-emacs, to be evoked for a brief moment in, say, the 'root' permission terminal that I keep constantly open to run a root-authority commands or touch up a system file. I used to use zile for that, but it is not 100% compatible with emacs, lacks many of the most common commands, and doesn't handle well Ctrl, Alt, Bcksp, and friends.
When looking for a small-footprint version of emacs for the Raspberry Pi, I realized that emacs-nox has a much smaller footprint not only than emacs, but also than emacs -nw, and in fact is not much bigger than zile itself. So, why use a crippled app if one can use the real thing at very
    little extra cost?
    What do you think? Thanks

Use TRAMP to edit files via sudo within Emacs. No need to start up a new instance.
Alternatively, use ABS to recompile it and add the --program-{prefix,suffix} option to change the name of the binary to emacs-nox or whatever.

  • EMac and Mac Mini?

I have an eMac I recently upgraded to Leopard. I keep getting space warnings in iPhoto, which is what I use the computer most for (I produce a school yearbook on the eMac). Also my CD drive often takes 20 attempts to open. I would like to know if I should add an external harddrive or can a Mac mini (has a CD drive) be used as one and what would be better for space? Can the CD drive on the Mac Mini be accessed from the eMac. Also once I have some external item, how do I put stuff on it and access those items? Do I move programs to it, or just save things to it? I would replace the eMac but with students around and limited desk space - it's size and weight make it impossible for kids to move or knock over. They mostly don't even notice it as it just looks so low tech.

I would like to know if I should add an external harddrive or can a Mac mini (has a CD drive) be used as one and what would be better for space?
The Mac mini can be used as an external drive, but it is likely too expensive if all you want to use it for is as an external drive.
Can the CD drive on the Mac Mini be accessed from the eMac.
    Yes.
Also once I have some external item, how do I put stuff on it and access those items?
Drag the iPhoto Library to it from the Pictures folder in the Finder's sidebar, and launch iPhoto with the Option key held down. Other documents can also be moved over.

  • Problems transferring mail folders from eMac to Mac Mini

    Okay, so here’s the problem.
I just upgraded my boss - well, her computer, anyway - from an eMac running 10.2.8 to a Mini running 10.4.6. I am now having problems transferring mailboxes from the old computer to the new one. She is one of those people who have a couple of thousand messages in fifteen different mailboxes she’s created, so I really need to get them across to the new machine.
Here’s what happens when I try (both machines are ethernetted together)(if that’s a word). I open Mail (2.0.8) on the Mini, and go to ‘File’, then ‘Import Mailboxes’ (Mail on the old machine, if it matters, is 1.2.3). If I select ‘Mail for Mac OS X’, then ‘Continue’, I get the box asking for location. Select the eMac, go to ‘Users’, select the User’s folder, then ‘Library’, ‘Mail’, ‘Mailboxes’.
If I click on ‘Choose’ then, I get all of the mailboxes under ‘Items to Import’ as (for example) ‘inbox.mbox’. Click on ‘Continue’, and get a progress bar stating it is importing. It then tells me I can find them in the folder named ‘Import’ in the main Mail window. However, when I go to the ‘Import’ folder there are only three of the mailboxes, and they are all empty. No, I can’t figure out why just those three, since all of the boxes have mail in them. If I choose an individual mailbox folder I get the ‘No Valid Mail for Mac OS X files were found’ message. It will not allow me to choose the individual *.mbox files.
Okay, so if I follow the above path to the ‘Import Mailboxes’ dialog box, then select ‘Other’, and in the import box select ‘Mailboxes’ at the same location as above, I get one item to import, named ‘mbox’. Click on ‘Continue’, I get the progress bar, then the same message about the ‘Import’ folder.
But, once again, if I click on the ‘mbox’ folder under Imports it’s empty.
So I’m currently stuck. I could forward the old messages back to the same address, but frankly I consider that to be a silly enough idea that it might have been suggested by Microsoft. Does anyone have any ideas where I can go from here?
I apologize for the long windedness, but I’ve done tech support via email, and I personally always hated info-light messages like “My email keeps crashing. Why?” Please let me know if any of you need to know anything else. Thanks!
Mac Mini 1.5 Intel Core Solo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   I am currently whistling "On the Sunny Side of the Street"

"There are a couple of things you seem to be missing that might or might not have a bearing on your problems."
I'm not at all surprised. I've been missing things most of my life
"First, ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes is not the only place where mail is stored. You may want to also import the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver account folders."
Okay, that one sounds good... unfortunately, there's no joy so far. I've tried it importing as Mac OSX Mail. If I select the [email protected] folder, I get a checkbox for each of the folders, then a brief progress bar when I click 'Continue'. There is then only one of the folders I tried to import under the 'Import' folder, and it again appears to be empty. If I try selecting any of the individual mailboxes I get the 'No Valid Mail for Mac OSX Found' message.
I get a bit further using 'Other', but not a lot. Selecting the POP folder gives me two of the mailboxes (one labeled simply 'mbox') and 'Continue' another brief progress bar... but again empty mailboxes. Selecting the individual mailboxes give the same result.
"Second, when importing as Other, Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mbox files to be imported. Hence, when choosing that option, you may want to try importing the *.mbox folders one at a time, rather than the entire ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes folder at once."
I was pretty certain I tried that, but I just went back and checked again to make certain. As above, I get a brief progress bar - then an empty, meaningless, nihilistic folder. Insert pseudo-intellectual 'staring into the abyss' line here.
I do have another thing I'm planning on trying. I was told I might be able to get better results if I booted the eMac into 'Firewire' mode so the Mini would just see it as a hard drive. I'll let you know if I get any results from that.
Thanks for your suggestions. Hopefully, this info will provide enough clues for you to facepalm and say "Of course! The obvious answer is..." And then fill in the ellipse, of course.
Those will work, or they won't. Either way, though, I appreciate your taking the time to think about this.

  • Emac to emac file transfer

hi - the screen on my old emac is gone (just a vertical line in the center of the screen). i got a new emac (used). i want to transfer the files from the old one to the new one. have tried using the migration assistant with firewire but it stalls at "waiting for discs to appear". my old emac is user password protected so that before i get a disc image i would have to log in. i'm assuming that is why the migration assistant stalls out. is there any way for me to proceed with this or will i have to take it to a technician and have him pull the hard drive and the files ? - thanks, beaner

Odd; Patrick's suggestion should work to put the
    Mac
with the bad display into Firewire Target Disk
    mode;
even in Migration/Setup Assitant stalls, it should
still be possible to get at the hard drive
    contents.
even if start up is user id log in protected ? -
    thanks, beaner
actually, i just looked at the migration assistant procedures again and it says to hold down the t key until the firewire symbol appears on the old machine. unless the migration assistant overides user id log in protection, i would not be able to see the firewire symbol until i have logged in to an administrator user account even if the screen was working which it is not. unfortunately, the easiest/cheapest way to do this (Mini VGA to Video Adapter) does not work on my emac so i will have to use a mini vga adapter combined with a db15/vga adapter and hope that one of the older monitors i have laying around will accomplish the mirroring and allow me access to the old computer so that i can enable file sharing and make a connection between the two computers. that is unless someone reading this can correct any misconceptions mentioned here or has an easier way of making this happen. - thanks beaner

  • New Mac Mini - NO MINI DVI TO VGA!!

Apple why on earth can I not choose the VGA adapter over the HDMI in my order? Your margins are fat enough as they are, now if I need/want this Mac Mini I gotta chuck/ebay the HDMI adapter and buy the VGA adapter to get it to work on our VGA displays.
Please offer at point of sale which adapter is required, I bet you any money there are far more VGA displays out there than HDMI's especially in the school's environment where the mac mini is the perfect product for IT admins to wedge Mac's in to the PC room.
Oh and while I'm at it. Give us front panel USB ports!

Sorry, but I for one have no idea what you're talking about. Apple doesn't even offer an HDMI adapter, so there's no way they could in any fashion be forcing you to get one. Perhaps you're referring to the mini-DVI to DVI adapter that is included? If so, then Apple's clearly including the adapter that's going to be most applicable to the majority of users (many if not most modern monitors and current televisions supporting DVI). You can submit your comments to Apple via the feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macmini.html
but I would doubt that they will not start including the VGA adapter. At best they might remove the DVI adapter and just let people choose, but my guess is that they won't want to ship the Mac mini with no way at all to connect a monitor. Given the relatively low price of the VGA adapter for those who need it, I wouldn't expect any sort of change. But you can offer your suggestion.
You can submit your suggestion re. front-panel USB ports through the feedback form as well.

  • The real difference between iPad Mini & iPad Mini Retina

I was window-shopping on the Apple-direct store's "refurbished & clearance" web site, and noticed that iPad Mini and iPad Mini with Retina Display are now available for resale there.
If I want to use an iPad Mini for certain functions, such as:
1: checking e-mail and address books while on-the-road
2: using an AppleTV and adaptors to wirelessly give presentations via Airplay to business meetings via HDTVs and projector-screen rigs
3: giving one-on-one image presentations for business/personal discussions using the tablet directly
4: consulting maps, weather forcasts and various light web-browsing
5: dappling in art tablet apps, note-writing, and math (calculator apps)
6: using the iPad as an entertainment device (playing music, watching movies/TV)
... then what is the real difference, functionally, between the iPad Mini and the iPad Mini with Retina Display?

  • Home Hub 3 - Slow Booting - min 10 mins to get a u...

My Infinity setup is a rocketship. Needed a change to an 'N' class PCI wireless card in the PC, but it is smokey.....reliable 20+ MB/sec download, 7MB/sec upload. And it hasn't been installed for 10 days yet, and the engineer reckons that the service settles down properly after baout 10 days.  Yeah, right
The only blot on the electronic horizon is that my HomeHub3 takes ages to connect once it's powered on. I reckon that the minimum time form switching it on to a useable broadband connection at the PC is 10 minutes, and generally it's 15-20 minutes.  And that includes seveeral minutes of messing about with the completley useless browser pages that the HH3 puts up ..... giving rickall info except sometimes it changes the admin username.....and sets it to exaclt what it was before. Duh.
Anyway, it is a pain in the rump to go through this grief every time I start up - every time I want to do a bit of internet shopping or whatever, it's taking longer to start the BB link than to find and order the shopping. Grrrrrrrrr....
Can anyone tell me: is my HH3 DOnald Ducked, or are all of the Infinity connections as scrappy to start as mine?
    Yours in Hope...

    I was going tosay:
Turning the Active NTE on/off not the HH3 will cause IP profile change via DLM s as that is what maintains the synch rate and ithe IP profile is based on fluctuating synch rates.
Turningthe HH3 off will simply drop the PPP session and give you a new IP on restart
    However that's only partially true.
DLM as writtten up in sin 498 is based on the synch rates and sets the profiles on BT openreaches ssytems hwoever sin 495 which describes the BT Wholesale side goes on to say:
Unlike other WBC (Wholesale Broadband Connect) access technologies, WBC FTTC accesses use the PPP (“Point-to-Point
Protocol”) session establishment to inform the BT Wholesale BRAS of the Openreach line
rate. It is therefore essential that the PPP session is re-started every time the VDSL line retrains.
To ensure this, the PPP / L2TP timeout values must be set to less than 20 seconds.
ie everytime your HH3 establishs a new PPP session the BRAs isinformed of the current synch speed. Given that (certainly judging by my event logs) the PPP is remotely reset on a daily basis then IMHO turning it off manually makes no difference.
Mind you I can never understand why someone would would turn their router off before going to bed ;o)
DISCLAIMER: although I work in the industry I do not work for BT and any opinions given are purely my own.

  • Mac Mini & Mac Mini Server

    Hi
I would like to know the "suitability" of Mac Mini or Mac Mini Server for web hosting (multiple domain/site) purpose. Some basic assumptions include : budget less than USD$5, user base / concurrent access less than 500, hosted at data centre with average bandwidth (not sure at the moment though).
Basically, I am disappointed with the purchase experience with Windows server. I have ready cash but the reseller seems no so keen. Perhaps, I am not the big spender. I wanted Windows server is because my developer is "brained-wash" in Windows world. He uses the standard PHP, mySQL related stuff. So I am trying to "brain-wash" him to Mac but it's a challenging task for me with little knowledge on the subject matter.
I need to know if Mac Mini and or server is "powerful" as compared with Windows server. I know it is not a very "fair" question but if I know there is very few people use such, then I more or less know the answer.
    HTH.

    Some things to consider.
The mini server will consume low power, generate little heat, and can be packed densely into a data center, achieving high levels of clustering or redundancy.  The flash storage is plenty fast but not spacious.  They are also cheap enough to buy two to form a level of redundancy, especially if you are using a load balancer.
However, Mavericks Server no longer includes MySQL.  This download you must do yourself.  PHP and Apache are present but Apple is not always the fastest to patch these two products.  You can replace the stack with a MAMP install which might serve you well.  Server.app does not expose all the Apache features that a hosting service may want/need.  However, you can edit the conf file manually.  If you are planning on giving your customers remote access, FTP is hobbled in Mavericks and you need to do a ton of work (or buy something else) to get multi-tenant chroot.
Regarding "powerful"... If you are using the device for a single task, then the issue falls to the performance of the network card in comparison to your internet connection speed.  If you are getting a 100 MB connection then the possible concurrent requests will never saturate the server.  This assumes that your HTML and images are optimized and you are not sending out a bunch of 1 MB GIFs.  Also, the consideration is Apache vs IIS.  Apple provides Apache and a simple interface for "casual" web services, usually one site or to support its own services.
Keep in mind that there are many Linux solutions that exist in which the cost of hardware might be equal to or less than the mini.  And in this case, you are getting the raw LAMP stack that you can more fully customize and patch.

  • Mini to mini migration with one display?

I am upgrading from an ancient (mid 2007!) mini to a brand new mini and wish to move files from the old mini to the new. I only have one display. The strategies on the Apple support page seems to presuppose two displays. I am not sure how to proceed.
Should I: 1. Hook the display to the new mini and use set up or migration assistant and 'blindly' pull the files from the old computer? Or 2. Restore files from time machine? Or 3. Pay Apple to do this for me? Or 4. Buy an additional display?
I am not sure if there are other approaches that I should consider. I am trying to avoid options 3 and 4 if possible to save money.
At this point all that I have done is to remove unwanted files from the old mini to make the move more efficient. I don't want to get caught part way through the migration process and find myself with no working computer.
I would be grateful for any solutions to my problem.

Use the Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant to restore the Time Machine backup.

  • Mini to mini file migration

I have a new mac mini and want to migrate files from my old mac mini. Do I need two monitors to run each mini through the process? As far as I can tell, I can only use Migration Assistant at this time.
Any thoughts on how to get this accomplished with one monitor would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think that your answer is here in the thread. Set the Power Mac to Target Disc Mode and hook it to the mini as an external FW HDD. Then using two Finder windows you can browse to the appropriate files/folders on the PPC and drag & drop them to the corresponding folders/locations on the new Mac mini. To see what you are doing with each Mac, then transfer the monitor from the PPC after it is booted in TDM to the Mac mini to see what you are doing to drag & drop the files and folders.

Hmm.. i just got my ipod mini charger today and when i plugged it into my computer and then connected my ipod mini my ipod went dead.. it would not charge and then when i took it off the charger it would no longer turn on and it is NOT on hold (i've already checked) and i've tried to "unfreeze" it and that didn't help either.. and help anyone could give me would be fantastic!! thanks

    Hi Stephanie,
There are several things that I don't understand here.
"i just got my ipod mini charger today and when i plugged it into my computer and then connected my ipod mini my ipod went dead"
You plugged your charger into the computer??
    "i've tried to "unfreeze" it"
Do you mean that you've tried to reset it?
    Have you looked here?
    iPOd won't turn on.

  • Mini book mini review

I recently ordered a package of three mini books
Time to print - 4 working days from transmit
Time to ship (standard) - 4 days from west coast to east coast
    Now for some details
The front cover and back cover are made of card stock. As far as I can tell you can only put a picture on the front cover - so the back cover will be white. In addition there is no printing on the inside face of the front cover.
The picture on the front cover may cut a few pixels off on the right edge. I left 1/4 inch of white space around the picture and the text on the front cover and had a bit less on the printed right hand edge.
The inner pages are printed on double sided paper with a mildy shiny finish (no one would describe it as glossy). The quality of the paper is what would be expected in a good textbook.
I did not see any loss of the image on any of the edges but of course the binding obscures about 1/8 inch of whatever edge is inside. The book creation process indicates that may happen by adding a shadow to the inside edge. I did not layout any of my pages crossing the centerfold - but certainly you would have to be careful not to put anything important in that area.
The colors were excellent - perhaps less saturated than what I see on the screen but pretty much what one sees when moving to print.
You should probably order an even number of inside pages. If you don't the back side of the final page will be white.
One of my originals had 450 pixels along the long edge and I was given a resolution warning - which suprised me as this was only going to be a 3.5 wide image - anyway I upsized it in PS and put it in and it looks fine.
I kept the text that I added simple but like others I found the text style selection process quite difficult.

  • Old is gold . Min order /min Qty value in GOA

    Hi
in olden GOA , we do have item field called min qty and min order .
but removed in new GOA. it makes me more concern
    Why SAp removed them.
I want that functionality in SRM 550.
since my material master has more rounding value causing problem..
    muthu

    Hi Csaba Szommer
You are right, If you try to convent PR in to PO, and  if you have maintained min.order qty in info record,  you get message ( error / warning ) as per your message setting.
Your question is also valid that if the same material is being procured by many vendors, and each vendor might have  different min. order qty, Hence it has to be picked from info record only.
But I have tried with all the possibilites. While converting PR into PO, based on system message you can correct the Quantity, but if MRP generates PR ,based on the min.order qty in info record, then no need to handle such messages.
You can try also, maintain different min. order qty in Material master and info record, it will always take from Material master and never from info record.
But Logically, it should take from info record.
That is why I wanted to make the system take info record min.order.qty.
So it would solve the problem if you know some setting that takes min.order.qty from info record.
( ref: I am aware of planned del. time , there is one checkbox in  plant parametes, if you select that , system will take planned del.time from info record , if you don't, system will take it from material master. So if you know any such setting for min.order.qty, pls let me know. I could not find any such possibilities)
    Thanks
