Emac office compatability

hi all.
a long time mac user, first time buyer has a few basic questions.
firstly, as i will be using my shiny new emac for my university work, does it ship with office and also, does it support word and therefore the .doc format, as this is how i have to submit my assignments.
also, will 512MB of RAM be enough to support me in my day to day usage, or should i dive into my overdraft and go for a whole gig? i don't use photoshop and my basic chores are firefox, word and a few messaging services. do you think 512 will cover me?
lastly, is it easy to connect a mac to the LAN network that i have access to in my room at university?
any general thoughts or tips would also be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Thanks to you and Wade for reminding me that sometime after I bought my eMac, Apple started bundling a demo version of Office. I don't know if that demo can be licensed to the full version for less than the Student/teacher package costs, but you'll have a couple of weeks to find out. I don't think the demo is crippled (i.e., features disabled) but in any case it will let you get your Word .doc files open the way you're used to seeing them.
AppleWorks, QuickTime Player, and the like will handle many of your existing files out of the box. For others, or for a user interface you're more familar with, you can download Windows Media Player for the Mac to handle .wma files, download Real Player, etc. Generally, for any Windows freeware program you've used, there's an equivalant Mac download. Good sources to bookmark for software downloads are VersionTracker and MacUpdate.
You may want to see if your school's library has a copy of David Pogue's OS X: The Missing Manual (you'll want the Tiger edition) or even consider buying your own copy (I'm pretty sure as a student you'd prefer the former to the latter --- use the money on a UPS instead!). Pogue's series of guides have been highly recommended for years and include tips especially for switchers.
A low-end UPS costs about the same as a high-end surge protector. Cheap surge protectors use MOSFETs and unfortunately degrade over time and exposure to voltage spikes, and have a nasty habit of losing effectiveness while leaving the status LEDs still lit to show OK.

Remove microsoft office compatibility pack 2007

We have upgraded all clients to Office 2010 so there is not need for microsoft office compatibility pack 2007 so I want to remove it. The compatibility pack was pushed via GPO. I was removed from GPO but "let user continue to use" was selected.
Now when trying to remove it using msiexec /qn /x{90120000-0020-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE} on almost all pcs I am getting a failure and it is not uninstalling. MSIEXEC error code it 1605.Jason

But I found the key

There is a little change in the GUI, may be related to SP3 for Compatibility Pack, which is installed. That UnistallString worked for me.
In a startup script it must include "/qn" as there is no user interaction. I.e.
msiexec /qn /x {90120000-0020-0C0A-0000-0000000FF1CE}

Old G3 Panther upgrade to New eMac + Office

I have a G3 iMac running Panther. I've bought an eMac running Tiger, and would appreciate some tips on how I can transfer my documents and Entourage identity to the new machine.

Star Office compatibility and upgrade

Hi. I am changing computer and want to install StarOffice on it. The problems I see are: 1) Is the latest version compatible with the latest version of XP-Pro? and 2) My current version (on cd) is StarOffice 5.2. So....is it compatible and how do I upgrade to the latest version of StarOffice? Thanks.

I'm sure Star Office 5.2 will function just fine on any `flavor` of WinXP.
My Star Office CD label says:
"Compatible with Solaris 2.5.1, 2.6, Solaris 7 and 8 for SPARC and Intel; Linux; and Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT."
If you have any doubts, set a restore point in WinXP.
Install Star Office and you'd be able to revert to that OS restore point if you have any issues.
Keep in mind that Star Office 5.2 is a nine-year-old product.
There have likely been a number of improvements during the intervening years. That's why there are newer versions of it.
You won't get any technical support on that discontinued version.
If I had to choose?
I'd toss that CD and just install the OpenOffice suite instead.
It'll have so much more inter-op compatibility with the rest of the Universe's programs, such as Microsoft's applications.

Emac/imac compatability

I have a 3 year old emac and imac. Are the airport extreme cards compatable with these or do I need an older airport card?

Microsoft ACE & Office compatibility issue

Here is our situation:
We have a 32 bit VC++ application that operated both with:
- Access to store data via ADO
- Excel for result output via OLE Embedded and OLE Automation
Our application is in the market of imaging.
Because of the interest of our users to work with more & bigger images, we can't stay with a 32 bit application.
We started the migration to x64 but we have a problem:
1. Data access requires Microsoft ACE OLEDB provider x64
2. Most of our users run Excel 32 bits (Microsoft continue to recommend the use of Office 32 bits).
The problem is that the Microsoft ACE OLEDB provider x64 is not compatible with Office 32 bits.
Can you please confirm?
Is there a way to workaround, for example by using another x64 OLEDB provider that would not have any issue running on the same machine as Office 32 bits?
Or maybe this is a case where Microsoft would tell us to use the x64 version of Office.

Yes, the 64-bit Microsoft ACE driver cannot co-exist with 32-bit versions of Microsoft Office, you must use 64-bit Microsoft Office.

Upgrading EMAC OS compatibility question

I have just bought an emac off ebay. Its currently running osx Jaguar 10.2.8. Its version 2.1 G4 800mhz 768mb ram super drive. Im wondering if it would be possible to upgrade to osx 10.4 tiger. Have been looking at a few and they indicate that they are only for the intel models. Which as far as im aware the emac i have doesnt have an intel processor

O.K. I am in the same boat and would like to upgrade, what would you recommend for memory upgrade. Right now I have only the original machine and can install another board. We mainly use this for homework and email but the girls are really liking garage band and other programs as they get older. We will be buying another unit in the near future and would like this Emac to go a little furthor. THANKS!!!!!

Mavericks and Microsoft Office compatibility?

I had Microsoft Office 2011 on my Imac and everything worked fine until I downloaded Mavericks a couple of days ago. Since then I cannot activate Office programs and it keeps asking the product key. To make things worse, it doesn't recognize my product key!
Is that a known problem? Is there a solution?

Microsoft Office compatability

I finally broke down and bought IWork09 because I read it was compatible with WINTEL Office. (Previously, had always run Office for Mac at home as must be compatible with WINTELs at work.) So, first test, I spend hours writing a doc on IWork, save to memory stick, bring to office's Word, no way to open it. Tried all the options.
Mac has always been able to read/write to a doc created in Word, but apparently Word still won't recognize Mac docs?? Makes IWork less useful, even if it is a nice program.

MS office compatability

I am finally considering the purchase of a MAC notebook. I own a copy of Office 2000 running on windows XP.
The question is, will I need to purchase a new version of Office to run on MAC or will my current version run? Other that Outlook, the program I use most is MS Access. Will this work?

The first answer you received was not altogether a correct answer.
Yes. You can run your MS Office Application on a PowerBook G4, whether used or new. You just have to purchase Virtual PC 7 for Mac. I use VPC and have both Windows 2000 and XP Professional with Office 2003, and it works flawlessly. Don't expect blazingly fast results though. It's fast enough to get whatever work you need done, and that's all that really matters. I use Word 2003, Excel 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Outlook 2003, Access 2003, and Visio 2003. Also I program with Visual Basic 6 on it. All work fine.
It just would sometimes be nice if responses were more true to the fact, other than quick one liners that do not do any good really.

Email. Are you hosting your own e-mail server or using something like gmail? The Windows Exchange server is very hard to run with 3rd party clients like Apple Mail. Some versions work in some configurations, but many do no not.
Other than that, you have describe the working environment of most corporate Macs, including mine. So yes, it should work fine.

I've never seen or heard of any good Java applications that can handle Microsoft Office documents.
If you switch from an S40 based phone to an S60 based phone, then there are many options (and most Nokia S60 models come with QuickOffice viewers included, and you can upgrade to the Premier version with editing support; never tried that myself, as I'm not a big fan of looking at MS Office docs on a small screen).

HT5634 Mac/windows/microsoft office compatibility

Even though I currently have Microsoft Office for Mac, I have downloaded Microsoft Office 2010 Windows. This is the required program for an online class that I am currently enrolled in (their system will not read mac documents). The download was free online through the university. The download completed but will not launch stating that it is not compatible with OX S. I have tried Boot Camp but it says to insert a Windows disk. Don't have one because it was an online download (office not windows). Suggestions?

As Niel said, Office for Mac works with the same documents as Microsoft Office for Windows, so you probably don't need Office for Windows.
Anyway, if you want to be sure, you can install Windows. As you only want to use Office for Windows, you only need to run it in a virtual machine, using an app like Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox. For most of users, VirtualBox is sufficient.
Then, you can get the Windows version you want. I recommend a 64-bit Windows 7 or 8, that you can get in Internet. Note that you have to get a full or System Builder version.
Then, download one of the applications above and create a virtual machine, so you only have to follow its steps to install Windows. When it finishes, install the tools that VirtualBox offers into the virtual machine, so you will be able to share your Microsoft Office with the virtual machine and install Microsoft Office
