EMac OS Upgrade?

My daughter was just given a eMac running 10.2.8 with a 700MHz processor
and 1 gig of memory.
What would be the best OS to upgrade to?

This past weekend I upgraded my daughter's eMac 700 to Tiger (10.4) from Panther and it runs quite well. I think you will be happy. I had to add RAM (went from 384 to 768MB) but yours has more RAM already. It's nice to have all the latest browsers on that computer again.
Be aware that few 7-year old G4 Macs can handle many of today's online videos streams without some choppiness. The technology seems to be leaving the G4 behind. Even our 1.42Ghz eMac struggles. Make sure you have the latest versions of the Flash and Shockwave players from adobe.com. Other than that, the computer plus Tiger is quite nice.
Tiger OS retail install disks are DVD. Our eMac did not have a DVD drive but I recently found an older Sony external DVD writer that was Mac-bootable via FireWire. I used it to boot from the install DVD and do the installation. If you use an external DVD drive for the installation, it must be FireWire.
The serial number label inside the optical drive door should show what kind of optical drive is installed. The image is this Apple article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2395
shows in the third line of text that the example computer has a Superdrive. You want to see that or "Combo Drive" to avoid the use of an external DVD drive.

  • EMac System Upgrade

    Hi;
I have an eMac that is running system 10.2.8. It is 384MB and 1GHz. Can it be upgraded to a newer system? Where can I find it? Is it a free download or do you have to pay for it?
    Thanks

After upgrading RAM, take a look at Gulliver - Tiger Upgrade Guide. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how much more responsive your eMac will feel after jumping from 10.2.8 to 10.4.10 (use the OS X Update Combo 10.4.10 (PPC) to bump whatever version is on the Install DVD to the latest version).
Cavet: 10.4 comes on a DVD. If you have an emac model without DVD capability, you'll need either an external DVD drive (using Startup Manager to boot from the Install DVD), or you can call the Apple Store and reach a liver operator to ask if Apple still informally has any of the Tiger Media Exchange sets left in stock to exchange the Tiger DVD for a set of CDs.

  • EMac OS upgrade to 10.4

Any advice on software upgrading an eMac (G4, version = 2.1, 768 MB RAM, 60GB HD, 800 MHz) from OS X 10.2.8 to OS X 10.4 would be very much appreciated.

    Hello and welcome to discussions,
    1. Make sure you back up all your data before you start.
    2. Use a legal, retail, version of OS 10.4
    3. Enjoy!
    Regards.
    Ian.

  • Emac ram upgrade question

i have a 1.25ghz emac with the standard 256meg of ram.
i want to give the ram a boost so a pal of mine gave me a brand new never installed 512 ram card never removed form its packaging, its the right pin count but it is a pc2100 card, and all ive seen sold "for" these machines are pc2700...
...is this going to work? will it cause any damage to the machine to see if it will work?
    thanks

The 1.25GHz eMac shipped with and specs out for PC2700 RAM. I believe that PC2700 and PC2100 do share the same pin out, as you noted, but PC2100 ram is slower than PC2700. PC2700 speeds are the same as the bus speed of your eMac, 166MHz. PC2100 is 133MHz.
So while the RAM may work, if it does, it will likely only work at 133MHz and probably slows down your other ram to the same speed. So you will have more RAM but all of it likely working at a slower speed.
The other scenerio is the BUS determines the speed and that PC2100 RAM gets overclocked. Might work, might not. You can always try it and see how your system performs. If you notice is acts slower or you get lots of crashes and lock ups, you may want to ditch it for the proper RAM. But it shouldn't hurt (phycially damage) your computer trying it out.

  • EMac memory upgrade

    Hi,
Do eMacs and iBooks (have 12-inch, G4, 1 Ghz) use the same memory modules? If so, I wanted to pull a memory stick from my iBook and move it over to our eMac.

If the computer's clock speed is 1GHz or below, it takes two 168 pin PC133 modules. Faster eMacs take 184 pin PC2700 RAM.
There were some non-cataloged eMacs made for the education market (briefly mentioned here) that had 1G processors but used the 167mHz USB 2.0 logic board. These machines are beginning to turn up on the used market.
With a 1G eMac, the only sure way to know what RAM it uses is to use System Profiler (About this Mac... > More Info...). The initial screen titled "Hardware Overview" will have a "Machine Model" line. If the machine model code is "PowerMac4,4" the machine uses PC133 RAM; if the code is "PowerMac6,4" it uses PC2700.

  • EMac G4 upgrading ram

So i finally got enough money to buy some RAM sticks for my eMac. I want to know if i can keep my original 256 mb and insert the 512 mb RAM stick in with it to make 768 mb?
The info on the computer is:
    Machine Name: eMac
    Machine Model: PowerMac4,4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 256 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1

Yes, no need to pull the original module. They do not have to be matched in size. our eMac 4,4 (700 mhz) has exactly that config: one 256MB +one 512MB.
Make sure you get Mac-savvy RAM. I bought RAM for our older eMac here:
    eMac RAM at OWC
Stuff you find at an office or electronics superstore may not work. Too much of what's in stores is high-density RAM for peecees.

  • Error message when trying to upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.5

Hope somebody can help. I'm fairly recent to macs as have always built and used pcs. Am having trouble upgrading from current pantherOS to Tiger. Bought emac with upgrade disc provided by seller. Disc was gray labelled emac. Installation went fine and everything was proceeding to point it finished writing files, configuring installation, and running installer scripts and then it quit with message: error installing software. Try reinstalling.
Tried reinstallation and same thing occurred. then Tried complete erase and new installation. Same error message.
Came to discussion group searching for something I might be doing wrong. Decided maybe disc was wrong even though it specified emac which is what I am using. Bought generic install disc that would install on any G3/4/5 with minimum specs per hardware which system met.Installation proceeded as it was going to install same as emac disc. This is normal full install disc for generic installation.
All installations screens came up and installation proceeded to same point as before and then quit with same message: error installing software/ Try reinstalling.
Have removed ram to original 256MB and tried. No luck. I am using external DVD for installation of DVD and wonder if this is problem but in the forums external DVD seems to work alright. Can reinstall old Panther OS without any problem
Ran hardware test and everything checked okay.
Should I just forget about upgrading and use 10.3.9 but would really like to know what is wrong. thanks. Rick

  • Emac to ilife O6?

I have a 1 1/2 yr old emac. I gig ram, I don't know the speed but I'm running ilife 04 on it.
I just upgraded to ilife 06 with my powermac G5 and love it. can I put the same disc in the emac to upgrade it?
thank you to whomever can help.

I updated to iLIFE 06 and am having problems burning DVDS with my external DVD burner with IDVD. Has anyone had similar problems? It starts and then doesn't finalize and shows an Error message.

  • Are the eMac and the G4 Mac Mini similar enough to...

use the eMac's tiger upgrade to upgrade my mini to Tiger? I know the other versions of tiger upgrades are specific to the hardware, i.e. powerbook, ibook, imac, ect. But seems to me eMac and the G4 mini are very similar. Possible?
    thanks
    ~bill

" Are the eMac and the G4 Mac Mini similar enough to use the eMac's tiger upgrade to upgrade my mini to Tiger? "
    No.
"I know the other versions of tiger upgrades are specific to the hardware"
And so are the eMac's upgrade discs.

  • Does your eMac with Leopard have a sleep/wake problem?

My question is,does anyone with an eMac running Leopadd 10.5.8 have a problem waking the compiter after putting it to sleep for an hour? I am having this problem with my eMac after upgrading from Tiger which didn't have this problem. Thanks

    Hi, not here...
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: eMac
    Model Identifier: PowerMac6,4
    Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Processor Speed: 1.42 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.2f1
If it did OK in 10.4, then I suspect some 3rd party App or Extension.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Emacs and Xorg

    Hi!
I've done a full system upgrade, and xorg and emacs were upgraded to their latest version in the package repository.  When I tried to start emacs afterwards, X crashed.  I've edited my .emacs as the crash was apparently caused by the fact that I use "monotype-courier new" as my default font.  Has anyone encountered a similer crash?   I have no idea why this happens..
    Thanks!

I have this crash with the CVS version as well.  I'll look into the xorg.conf file, but I don't believe this has changed.
I can select the monotype courier-new font in xfontsel by the way, so I guess that already rules out the possibility of a missing font path?
Regards, and thanks for the answer!

  • Pismo G3 (upgraded to G4) Firewire mounting problems

I have two firewire drives (both 40GB). One will mount without issue on both of my systems (Emac and Upgraded Pismo G4). The other one will mount perfectly on by Emac and several other computers, but can take several minutes for it to mount on my Pismo. Most times it will eventually mount, but after a long delay.
I have formatted the drive and looked at it under disk utility, but everything seems to be ok. One further note, the badly behaving disk was also in another case and having the same bad behavior. It seems it is something with the disk itself, but it is strange that it only happens on my Pismo and not other system.
I'm Running Tiger and have had this problem in Panther and also before I upgraded my CPU to the G4 chip. It's really wierd that my other FW drive works and the problem one works on every other system I have tried. I have also tried swapping cables/ ports on the connection to the PB.
Do any of the experts have any idea what is going on?

    Michael,
    Just speculation here...
I had an older 5GB HD in a FireWire case and it absolutely would not mount unless I connected the little power brick to the FW case. I finally replaced the HD with a new one and the problems vanished. I can only speculate that the old HD was drawing too much power due to its age or a hardware issue and the FireWire port could not supply enough bus power to fully power the device. Your FW HD eventually mounts as it heats up and the current draw diminishes. So possibly your Pismo does not supply enough bus power to deal with the marginal FW HD but other Macs do.
Of course if you are already using a power brick, this theory goes out the window...
Question: Once the FW HD is thoroughly warmed up and mounted on the desktop, can you unmount it, disconnect the cable, then reconnect and have the HD mount in a reasonable time?

  • Bootcamp cannot load to my emac

I recently bought an emac and upgraded to mac os x leopard, cant seem to get bootcamp off the disk...cant find it and not loading software...what do I need to do?

BootCamp requires an Intel based Mac - the eMac used the old PPC chip. You are out of luck until you buy a modern Mac.

  • Lost serial Number for FCE 2

I have the disc, The app is installed on my comp, but I have lost the serial number to 'reinstall' after an upgrade to OS 10.5.8.
When I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5.8, I thought it only upgraded the system - but no it wiped: Mail, Pics, iTunes and a host of apps. which I am slowly trying to re-install.
I'm looking for the Serial number of my Final Cut Express 2 - I cannot find a FCE2 community - Is there a way to retrieve the number ?

    Thank you David.
I regret having upgraded at all with the grief it's given me in apps that are 'dead'. Losing all my Mail, ditto iTunes 1000 numbrs - Playlists and Pictures - 30000.
Lucky I had pic backups and all my tunes are on CD.
Silly me I thought that upgrades only upgraded the system didn't realise that it wiped the system clean.
Luckily my eMac cannot upgrade any higher so I will not have to worry about reloading all my apps with a next upgrade.

  • Mac won't play Humax DVDs

We have two emacs, an upgraded G4 and a Humax/Tivo DVDR. When we burn a DVD on the Humax, it plays in every other DVD player in the house, but will only play for five minutes in the Macs before it freezes the machine. Force quit is the only remedy.
    Why? Is there a workaround?
G4 1.2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.5)   System limited by audio hardware: Digidesign 001

It appears that you do have a speed choice as per Humax's recorders.
Choice of recording modes : from 6 hours to 1 hour high quality recording
    Multi-function disc types for playback
Highly compatible : Playback recorded discs on MOST DVD players
DVD+RW recording format : Proven DVD recording technology for reliability and compatibility.
    Single Layer(4.7GB) write speeds
    1x (CLV) = about 58 minutes
    2x (CLV) = about 29 minutes
    2.4x (CLV) = about 24 minutes
    4x (CLV) = about 14.5 minutes
    6x (CLV/ZCLV) = about 10-12 minutes
    8x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 8-10 minutes
    12x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 6.5-7.5 minutes
    16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes
    Dual/Double Layer(8.5GB) write speeds
    1x CLV = about 105 minutes
    2.4x CLV = about 44 minutes
    4x CLV = about 27 minutes
    Single Layer (4.7GB) read speeds
    1x read speed is 1.321MB/s = ~56 minutes
    6x CAV (avg. ~4x) read speed is max 7.93MB/s = ~14 minutes
    8x CAV (avg. ~6x) read speed is max 10.57MB/s = ~10 minutes
    12x CAV (avg. ~8x) read speed is max 15.85MB/s = ~7 minutes
    16x CAV (avg. ~12x) read speed is max 21.13MB/s = ~5 minutes
    * write speed time and read speed time is not the same because writing requires some extra steps and also does the faster writing above 6x usually use lower write speeds for some parts of the dvd. 4x DVD speed = 36x CD speed. See section 4.2 in the DVDDemystified FAQ here.
