EMac power button broken off retaining ring!

Well, we managed soldered the broken power button cable I mentioned back onto the logic board (we did this by cutting off the connector and permanently soldering the cables to the correct spots on the board, BUT, the power button itself is now broken! Here are pics...

Retaining ring.
The cable is fine, but now it's the button that is the problem! Does this need to be soldered back on too, or is there some other way? Or should I shell out $20 for a new eMac power button?
It may be the shortened cable that caused this, and I am not sure how this can be worked around.

Is there a way to start the eMac WITHOUT the power drive temporarily? According to this quote from another website...
{quote} The only way to turn it on now is to place a wire (I used a wire twist tie.) that connects the Black and Red leads on the connector for the power button. This is done by placing the wire on the top of the connector where you can see metal showing. This will turn on the Mac. I would recommend turning on the option to have the mac reboot after a power failure and keep it plugged into a power strip that you turn off. (I use mine as a server so I never usually turn it off unless I need to do maintenance.)
So in other words, does this mean I could put a twist tie on the white connector thingy that goes to the power button retainer ring? Or is it more complicated than that?

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

  • Turn off iphone power button broken and touchscreen selectively unresponsive

I have an iPhone 4S w/ iOS 7, my power button has broken so I have enabled the Accessibility features in order to lock and unlock my phone.
That has been working fine. Now, my touch screen is selectively responsive. It IS NOT broken or damaged in anyway. I can access the pull down and pull up menus, I can ask Siri to search for something and I can scroll through the responses she returns. I can visit one of those web pages she returns and scroll inside of those as well.
However, any scrolling that is related to a Home screen function I can not perform. For example, I can't "flick" away apps to close them, I can't hold down the "Lock Screen" button which then presents the "Slide to turn off" slider, the touchscreen won't slide the slider... When I do access either the pull down or pull up menus, I can see them but I cannot select anything on them, the touchscreen is unresponsive. When my phone is locked I can't swipe to unlock it.
We do not have home POTS service, so this is my only means of calling for help if I needed to, and now I can't. This is a very unfortunate failure.

    Hi there quixee,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • EMac power button workaround

    Hi,
My emac is a 2003 model, 1Ghz processor, and the power button kept getting dodgier and dodgier over the last year or two, so I started just leaving the emac running and/or relying on the scheduled wake-up to start it.  Then my two-year old decided to shut off the power strip it was plugged into recently, and the battery is dead, so the scheduled start wasn't happening, and the button just wouldn't turn it on.  I took the shell off to check out the power button, and when I tried to push the button through the ring it sits in the button and the little disc of circuit board that's part of it separated from the rectangular plastic connector piece that connects it to the cable.
I found an archived thread in this community that addressed bypassing the button, with solution identified from another site as follows:
"The only way to turn it on now is to place a wire (I used a wire twist tie.) that connects the Black and Red leads on the connector for the power button. This is done by placing the wire on the top of the connector where you can see metal showing. This will turn on the Mac."
"Spudnuty" on this site then agreed as follows:
"You have to strip the wire and plug it into the red socket and short it to the black. You can also access these at the exposed locking tabs on the side of the connector. Connections are electrically made."
I've tried this with no luck.  First problem is the cable to the power button has two black wires (one narrower and shiny, the other slightly larger and dull) and one red (narrower and shiny).  But I tried shorting all combinations and nothing seems to be turning the thing on.
Does that mean my problem is more than the power button? I had the shell still off when I was trying this - is there some kind of safety system keeping it off when the shell is off?  I'm loathe to spend $40 on a new emac button when something for $3.50 from radio shack to short two wires will do the trick.
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    kfdc

    kfdc,
Here's a pic of the back of the switch itself with electrical connections noted.
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=eMacSwitc hcircuitboardback.jpg&jwidget_action=album
and a pic of the side you push with the cover off:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=eMacpower switchactionside.jpg&jwidget_action=album
As I recall the shiny black wire is a shield lead, dull black is ground and the red is B+.
You can tell by the way they're connected to the back of the power button.
BTW as I recall the wire I used to do the shorting on the female plug from the eMac was a single strand of wire teased from an 18 GA stranded wire. That thing is teeny!
Also this is from the service manual for the 800-1GHz model. The other was the 1 and 1.25 GHz.
"9 Verify the battery is good before replacing modules. A drained battery may be indicative of a
crashed Power Management Unit. Does the battery measure at least +3.5v? If not, replace
the battery and reset the PMU (see next step)."
"5 Touch the metal surface inside the computer. Then unplug the power cord. This helps protect the
computer from damage caused by electrostatic discharge. Important: To avoid electrostatic
discharge, always ground yourself by touching metal before you touch any parts or install components
inside the computer. To avoid generating static electricity, do not walk around the room until you have
finished the procedure and closed the computer."
"6 Press the PMU reset button (shown below (It's to the right when the PRAM battery is to the left-spudnuty)) once and then proceed to step 7. Do NOT press the
PMU reset button a second time because it could crash the PMU chip.
7 WAIT ten seconds before connecting the power cord and powering the computer on. If the
computer powers on, go to the next step. If the computer does not power on, there is something
else wrong with the computer, refer to the symptom/cure, “No Power” in this chapter."
The other problem could be that that connector assembly is bad/broken. It's very easy to damage that little lead when you take that outer  case off (Did that!).

  • Boot loop and power button broken

    Hi,
I have a new problem with my iPhone 4 8go
Tonight the battery died so when I woke up I plugged it in like I normally do, but after the usual white apple when the phone turns on, I see my lock screen for 2 seconds before the phone shuts down automatically.
If I keep it plugged it stays in a boot loop and just stay off if I unplug it.
I've done my research about that issue, which seems common, and it looks like going in DFSU mode and restore from backup might work.
Problem is, my power button is broken and doesn't work anymore, so I can't do the manipulation with home and power button.
I have downloaded redsnow to try to go in DFSU mode without button but due to the boot loop, the phone is not detected in iTunes...
Is there any way to force the phone in DFSU mode or anything else I can do?

  • Slide to unlock not working but I can slide to answer calls (power button broken) HELP!

Can anyone please help? 24 hours before my upgrade is due and my iPhone 5 has decided it won't let me slide to unlock...I can slide to answer a call no problem weirdly so Im thinking it isn't a fault with that part of the screen? My problem is compounded by the fact that the power on/off button hasn't worked in a while. this hasn't been a major issue until i am now trying to at least back up and then restore my phone. I can't enter the passcode to restore it! And i can't try lots of the suggestions I've seen which is holding the home and power button together as my power button doesn't work. I can't even sell the phone as faulty at the moment as i have no way of getting all my data off it!

Take the device to Apple to address the hardware issue.

  • IPhone 3G Power button broken, as well as interrupted restore to iOS 4.0.1

So my sleep/wake (power) button on my iPhone 3G is broken, and I tried updating to iOS4 on iTunes 9.2 on my Macbook Pro. So, the restore seems like it's going well, but during the progress indicator process of "Restoring iPhone" (right before it begins to verify,) it got stuck. So, I unplugged the phone thinking it would go into Recovery Mode. However, for the last 3 hours it has had the same screen on the device that you would see if you were restoring the phone. I am trying to make the battery die, but it is taking forever, and I can't put the device into DFU mode because my sleep/wake button is broken. The phone is not under warranty and I do not know what to do. Please help!

  • Power Button Peeling Off?

Has anyone else had their silver power button in the top right hand corner peeling off? I remember this transparent layer starting to peel a few months into having my PB in '03 but I never bothered to have it checked/replaced. Plus I believe Apple doesn't deal with cosmetics. Just wondering if anyone else has had the sameproblem.

So it's just covering the metal portion, not the engraved power logo. I'm trying to determine if there is plastic over mine by feeling the surface. There does seem to be something there. So it sounds like yours is unfortunately peeling off. Is it sticky where the plastic has already peeled off? If it isn't, I would be tempted to just pull it off completely.
Honestly though, I have never heard of this before...

  • IPod 4th Gen power button broken, game center and some apps won't load.

iPod 4th generation, iOS 6.1.6, power button is broken (will not click at all, I can't let my iPod run out of battery because I won't be able to turn it back on).
Game center, and some of my apps will not load.
I also have issues with apps and Safari crashing, but that isn't a major problem.
For the apps not loading, I've tried deleting them, and then reinstalling them, but it didn't work.
Is there anything I can do about this?

To reset the iPod without the hardware buttons,
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All your wifi and bluetooth preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected. You will have to rejoin wifi networks and repair BT devices
For Safari problem try going to Settings>Safari and Clear Cookies<data and History.
To turn on an iPod without a Power button just connect the iPod to a charging source

  • Ipod touch 3rd gen home button and power button broken?

My iPod was working fine until a few weeks ago, when this started happening: every time you push the home button, it goes to the "slide to power off" screen, and then no matter if you slide to power off or if you click cancel, it shuts off after a few seconds and then tries to turn back on again. The same thing happens if you push the power/lock button for any amount of time. So, I can only run like 1 app unless I want to have to restart my whole iPod. In addition, sometimes when it tries to turn back on it tells me to plug it into iTunes, which I do and it tells me to restore it. I restored it, and then I unplugged it and it did the same exact thing, where any button press makes it turn off. I plugged it in again and it asked me to restore it again. Nothing seems to be working and I don't know if this is something that can be fixed or if I need a replacement?

You can turn it on via the Power button or by connecting the iPod to a charging source.

  • Power plug broken off in computer

This is on behalf of my son, who is developmentally disabled. The plug-in mechanism/part of his iBook G4 (purchased in spring 2005) has apparently broken off in the computer. He bought AppleCare when he bought the computer but failed to send in the paperwork or register it or something, so it is no longer covered by warranty. Apparently he did get a notice in the mail at some point that the warranty was about to expire, but due to his moving out of state, the notice got to him too late.
He is living in another state, and I recently brought the computer back home with me after a visit to see if I could figure out how to fix it. He says he was given an estimate (maybe at CompUSA in Omaha, NE?) of $800 to take the computer apart and fix the problem.
I looked up a web site about disassembling this computer, and it looks like more than I am comfortable with doing.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get to this part of the computer in a less "invasive" manner? The battery is completely depleted, so I can't power up the computer or anything at this point.
Might there be a way to get a charger for the battery so it can be charged up outside the computer? That might be a stopgap measure.
    Thanks,
    Linda

Just to clarify... He bought the iBook at CompUSA in Madison, WI. He lives in Omaha, NE, and got the repair estimate there. I live about an hour's drive from Madison, in the boonies of SW Wisconsin. He didn't buy it from the Apple Store. Thanks for the online references. I'll check them out, and maybe next time I go to Madison (Friday) I'll take the iBook with me and ask CompUSA to look at it.
I did try the needle-nosed pliers route -- it didn't work. But I'm not sure what I'm looking at, really. I'll look at the computers on display, too. My goal is to try to get this fixed by New Year's when I will see him again.
    Thanks,
    Linda

  • Power button broken or somehow disabled?

Hey guys new to the forum but i Got the k1 for christmas and i absolutley love the thing besides th fact that it updated six times from christmas to jan and that it is buggy the browser sucks crap and force closes all the time and the whole thing is generally slow and buggy and poorly developed software....... But i awoke this morning and the power button does not work..i have never dropped it  i  always put it in its case and there is not a dam scratch on it...which i was quite proud of   and the only way to get the screen on now is by plugging in the charger  ... god forbid the dam thing dies and the power button still wont work ...has any one had any experience with this can i fix it my self or must i send it in and pay the shipping and all that jazz????
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Leave the tablet charging overnight then try turning it on the next day and see if it helps. I dont think the K1 has keylock for the power button. If changing it overnight does not help, then contact service. They should send you a box with a return label

  • IMac power button broken.  What gives?

I purchased a 2006 intel iMac on craigslist. It worked fine the first day. Next day it wouldn't turn on.
Tried standard stuff like using different outlets, making sure cord was tight. When it's plugged in I can hear a very light high pitched whine (similar to what you'd hear when turning on old TVs) but there is zero response to the power button.
The button seems a bit odd, like it's pushed in to far, doesn't always bounce back, if I run my finger in circles the button seems to make it's way back up. I tried the unplug for 15 sec, plug in, wait 5 sec and hit power trick. No luck with anything. Any ideas?

To me it sounds like you have two choices:
    1. Ask for your money back.
    2. Work out a deal with the seller to pay for the repairs. (which most likely will, well could add up to as much as buying a new 21.5")

  • Fps 1000 power button broken

I know it's a pretty old system, but I like it a lot and I don't want to buy a new set-up if I can repair it. Anyway, the problem is that the power button doesn't function anymore. It sometimes makes a brief sound, but then it goes away, like it loses contact or something. I can get continuous sound, but then I have to press hard on the button to get it all the way in, but the moment I let go the sound disappears again. So my guess is there's a loose wire or connection. Since this baby is about 5 or 6 years old, it's way past it's warranty, so I thought I'd open it myself and see what can be fixed. My question is, how do I open it's It doesn't seem to have regular screws, so what do I need to screw it open?
    Thanks in advance.

    Paidor,
Unfortunately the FPS000's are just a little before my time (I came in about the time the FPS 2000's came out) and I can't really recall much about them. We don't have any working models here so there isn't much to go by. To be honest, replacing these speakers might be the cheaper option since I don't know how much it might cost to repair the switch or even if the switch can be repaired.
Most of our current speakers actually outperform these speakers as technology has progressed quite a bit since we made these speakers. You might check out www.cambridgesoundworks.com to see if there are any sets that would do what you want. You can also check out www.creative.com to see if there are any speakers there that fit the bill. One note, 4.1 speaker systems are slightly rare now as 5.1 has almost completely replaced it as the defacto surround standard.
