EMac problem

Hello
I own an Mac OSX 10.3.5 and there have been some
things happening. I have an Ipod and i got the Sad
Ipod icon so i sent it in under the warranty and got a
new one. This happened a total of three times. So i
figured it couldnt be the Ipod. Then when I put a CD
in the drive, nothing hapens at all. I dont even
heaar it reading the disc or the disc spinning. Any
help at al would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try ejecting the disk first by holding the mouse button down at startup, and if that doesn't work, follow these directions:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106752
If neither works, then either the disk did not get inserted properly, or the mechanism of the drive which mounts it is broke.

  • FW HD/FW interface/Emac problem

an hour ago i turned on my emac, to see my interface (M-audio firewire 410) not connect properly. its power light was constantly flashing, and there was nothing i could do to stop it.
my external harddrive (iomega) is connected to the interface as the second firewire port on the mac never worked. and because the interface wasnt connected, the external couldnt connect either.
iv messed about a fair bit in disk utility to try to resolve the issue, but it dosnt seem to be working
just now i got an error "Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk".
i then ejected the external, and tried again, ran disk inspection, and it passed as "okay".
problem is, after restarting again, the interface still isnt working, and so the external harddrive isnt working well either.
    anyone have any ideas?

  • EMac Problems after I upgraded to Leopard

I think I've made a mistake. My eMac has run beautifully for years. I upgraded to Leopard about 3 months ago and since then it has been running more like a PC. It's slow, gets hung up, an unusually high number of pinwheels, programs crashing. I'm worried that upgrading to Leopard was a major mistake.
I'm running 512 MB of ram on a 1.42 Ghz PowerPC G4. Is this a matter of needing more RAM or can I adjust some settings to make my eMac run more smoothly.
    Thank you.

I've also bought from the source roam gives and cannot complain about the quality or performance. In addition, on the very few occasions I've run into problems, I found OWC's customer service to be very good; working together we were always able to resolve the issue to my satisfaction.
I can say the same for the other online RAM vendor I use, Data Memory Systems (DMS). Their RAM Finder for Macs is among the best, helping you to easily locate the right product for your computer.
I have found the many brick-n-mortar office and electronics superstores seldom have useful information (or employees) when it comes to Mac RAM. It's been a very long time since I've bought any Mac RAM from other than OWC or DMS.
One other thing to check: With the meager amount of RAM you currently have, OSX's Virtual Memory is going to be working hard and will need a fair bit of free space on your boot partition. Do "Get Info" on your boot partition and see how much free space is there. You need at least 10 percent but more is better.

  • Emacs problem

When Emacs is started, the height of echo area is always 2 lines initially.(with or without init file) And then when I load files(C-x C-f) or whatever, the echo area is shrunk to 1 line. The annoying problem is, it makes the whole frame size changed.
I have a mac version of Emacs too and there is no such problem, cause the height of the echo area in mac version emacs is 1 line initially.
    any ideas?

I use dwm (obeying size hints) but I don't have this problem in tiling or floating modes. I also don't have the problem in Gnome. I think the window manager idea was a false lead.
The only other place I've seen something like this happen is if you use a font that just doesn't work well with emacs; I've seen something like double-spacing but in the main buffer as well. Anyway, if that were the case, it would not go away when you find a file and it wouldn't be only limited to the mini-buffer. Plus, ignoring the init file should fix something like that. So I don't think it's a font issue either...

  • EMac Problem - Won't recognize HD

I have gottem my eMac to boot up with the eMac install disk. Want to run Disk Utility but there is no HD to select! Ran Apple Hardware test and everything passed. When booting there is a subtle clicking in the back of machine that repeats itself and the machine will not boot up into OSX. If it's not a hardware problem according to AHT how can I get DU to find the HD so I can fix it?
    help.
    Thanks,
    JB

I ran into a problem with memory faults that Apple Hardware Check didn't catch. So there is precedent for Apple diagnostics not catching everything that could be wrong.
I've had hard-drives fail on laptops; the clicking noise is fairly typical of a hard-drive failure.
Try installing OSX onto a fire-wire drive and using that as your boot disk. You don't need to re-partition it if you already have a firewire drive for backup; just install OSX. Then use the system profiler to see if the internal hard drive is recognized by the computer.
Replacing the hard-drive in an eMac is not a job for novices. If you're used to working on computers and are very patient with small fiddly wires and screws, then there are good reference materials on the internet to guide you through it. The power-switch, for example, is needlessly fragile so be very careful when lifting the plastic shell off the eMac. Be aware that the CRT in an eMac contains lethal voltages if not discharged properly. There are also internet resources on how to do this. I don't have the links handy, but you can search "eMac dis-assembly" as I did to find them.
The folks who make Drive Genius also make a data-recovery program that I've heard good things about, but not used personally. Hopefully you have a current backup of your data....
    Good luck!

  • Emacs problem in Terminal.app

When I edit a text file in the (text-only version) of emacs running in Terminal.app, what happens all the time is that characters in my file get overwritten by spaces (on the terminal only). Pressing Ctrl-L recentres and refreshes the display and it's OK - until it happens again, which is usually right away.
E.g. if I open the file and press down rightarrow, and hold it for autorepeat, the cursor will gradually move through the file, but as I scroll over certain characters, they will be overwritten by spaces on the screen.
The problem only happens in Terminal.app, not also in xterm.
It doesn't matter whether $(TERM) is set to xterm, xterm-color, vt100 etc. in Terminal.app.
I remember this working in previous versions of Mac OS X, but not in 10.4.5 (and as I recall it's not worked for me for a while).
Is this a bug? Does anybody else see this? Or is there some setting I might have inadvertently changed.

The problem was traced to a
    stty -tabs
line in my .login file. It appears that emacs outputs tabs to move around the screen, and those were being expanded to spaces which overwrote my text. Vi apparently does not use tabs in the same way, which is why the problem was limited to emacs.
The reason the problem manifested itself in Terminal.app but not in xterm is that tcsh executed inside a new Terminal.app window executes .login, whereas one executed inside a new xterm window does not.

  • Emacs problems

I'm writing in Java using emacs on my Windows ME box and it's giving me attitude when I try to compile code using the C-c C-v C-c keystroke. I went throught the customization options and found where to specify the compile command (javac) and I did that and added my JDK directory to the PATH line in autoexec.bat, so I know that the problem isn't the command. The problem is that it's giving the path to the current buffer incorrectly. For example, if the file I'm working on is c:\emacs\foo\Bar.Java, the command issued by emacs should be javac c:\emacs\foo\Bar.Java, but it issues it as javac "c:/emacs/foo/" Bar.java. With this command, the part issed outside quotes is regarded as an argument rather than part of the path. Any suggestions on how to tell emacs how to specify the file to compile? Also, it gives file paths using forward slashes. Any way to change this?

    hai
    in my emacs
    the javac format is
    like this only
    javac -classpath "<classes in the classpath>" -d <option> <javafile>
and i think this is the standard .
let me know what kind of info u need

  • Composite Video on eMac problem

At my school I have a number of eMacs and I want to connect a few of them up to TV monitors. In the past I have been able to use the mini-vga to video adapter and connect it to the video input and have things work just fine. Recently, however, when I do that I do not get the mirrored screen. I get bands of light flickering across the screen.
This setup works fine for a iBook, but not for the eMac.
    Any suggestions?

Is this also true on the 1.07 GHz iBook G4 (Early 2004)?
    No
The iBook G4 has a mini-VGA output. To get S-Video or composite video simply use the Apple Video Adapter (M9109G/A).

  • Emac Problem. URGENT

Hello. I sold an emac G4 on ebay a while ago and now the buyer is contacting me saying all of asudden it went black and there is a clicking sound. Thats all the info. i have right now. If anyone knows of an obvious fix, I please tell me. I'm going to try to get more info. soon.
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks, Kevin

I don't think it would be the hard drive because if it was, the machine should still start (screen not black) and give a icon of a disk with the blinking question mark over it showing no start up volume. This sounds more like a power supply failure or some other hardware failure that is preventing the motherboard from even attempting to boot.
But since the eMac was sold two months ago, I would say to the original poster that this is obviously well outside of your responsibility as the buyer should realize when buying used equipment. Had the Mac failed within days, then I might see they buyers concern/point, but after two months of use it is completely reasonable to assume that you sold the eMac as a working used computer with no expectation of impending failure.

  • Various eMac problems

    1. I can get my gmail easily but when I enter "hotmail" for my account, nothing happens. Why?
    2. I can't install my HP 7360 Photo Printer.
    3. My machine is eMacG4PC, 1GHz, 512MB, with Panther 10.3.9 and OX9; can I upgrade to Snow Leopard? I have to download severeal things but all say must have 10.5. or better; would Tiger be any better? For example, I tried to download google chrome browser but can't do it with 10.3.09.
Thanks for any and all assistance and advice on this, as I am new to Apple, and not all that experienced with Windows, either.

    1) Not sure what's going on there as I use neither service. It's very possible that Hotmail only supports browser versions too new for 10.3 to run.
    2) Have you tried downloading the latest printer driver package from the HP site? It's here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-57601-1 &lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=219&product=1156651&sw_lang=&key=null&site=null
and supports 10.3.9 according to the description. Big download--hope you have broadband!
    3) The highest Mac OS you can run is 10.5 Leopard; Snow Leopard (10.6) only works on Intel Macs--eMacs don't have Intel processors. To run 10.5, you probably need more RAM. I figure 512MB the min for 10.4 Tiger. Your computer also needs an optical drive that reads DVDs.
Tiger is very nice but I think we'll run out of browser support soon. Tiger is also horribly expensive on the used market--often more than many eMacs are worth today. You can call the central Apple Store (1-800-MY-APPLE--not a retail store or the online store) and ask if they still have 10.5.
You need a full retail install set. The grey system install/restore disks form another Mac model will not work

  • Installing Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard on an eMac problems

I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on an eMac. When I first bought the Mac Box Set, it said the Leopard disc was damaged so I called up Apple and got a replacement. Now when I try to install it says:
"The Installer could not validate the contents of the 'BaseSystem' package."
BTW, I'm installing on a 500 GB Western Digital External FireWire HD, as my internal hard drive died. How can I get the installation to work?

    fnankivell wrote:
After much investigating and asking around, turned out my eMac's SuperDrive was not recent enough to read dual-layer discs. It's just that simple.
FWIW, essentially every DVD drive including those in every Mac can read dual layer disks. Almost all commercial DVD movie releases are DL, so a drive that could not read them would be nearly useless. Your eMac's DVD drive cannot write ("burn") DL disks, which is an entirely different capability.

  • EMac Problem /Last Question

When I insert the install disk and restart there is no icon to click on still get only screen and apple and trunning wheel.

    N J,
As Justin already posted, you have to keep the 'c' key down until it actually indicates it's starting from the disc --- it takes longer than many epople expect.
(Note that's the lower case 'c')
You can also use Startup Manager (holding the option key down at startup, then using the arrow keys to select the optical disc) if you find that easier.

  • Photoshop Elements 2: Top Of Picture Disappears Under Shortcuts Menu Bar.

I know it's not an eMac problem but I thought this would be the best place to ask!
At one time whenever I opened a photo in PSE2 the top edge of the photo's window was neatly aligned with the bottom of the Shortcuts Menu Bar.
Now whenever I open a picture the top of the picture's window disappears under the menu. If it doesn't disappear the moment it is opened, it does if I try to enlarge it.
This means I cannot move the picture around the monitor or close the picture with the red button at the top.
The only cure I have found is to remove the Shortcuts Menu bar, which is rather inconvenient!
I have fiddled around with the preferences and also turned the "Resize Windows To Fit" setting on and off to no avail.
This never used to happen - so has anyone got a solution?
    Ian.

    PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!!!!
After a day of intermittent head-banging I have solved it.
The Shortcuts Bar should always be ABOVE the Options Bar.
Although I have used Photoshop a lot, I can go for weeks without looking at it.
Somehow the positions of the Shortcut and Options bars had been switched and I hadn't noticed.
I don't know how because I didn't even realise they could be moved and nobody else uses my computer!
Anyway, now the Shortcuts Bar is on top everything is back to normal.
Hope this is of some help should it happen to anyone else.
    Ian.

  • X11 printing font controls

I continue to have problems controlling my printer from some OS X applications (emacs and xemacs, to be specific). While I can print from emacs without apparent difficulty, xemacs is, at the moment, at lost cause. My latest bete noire for emacs is my inability to alter the default printing font, which appears to be a 14 point monospaced font. Since it is printing a page that is composed in 11 point monospaced font, there is no way for programs, their headers, or anything else to come out correctly. By contrast, in a program like vim, also running under X11, the display font is exactly the same as the printing font and so the text appears on the printed page exactly as it does on screen. While I understand this to be an emacs problem, I'm 100% convinced of this. As proof, if I lpr the file directly outside of emacs or vim, the file prints in 14 point monospace type. I have the default font for OS X applications set to be 11 point True-type font and I can control that directly from the Printer Setup or Page setup panel within any OS X application.
There HAS to be a default font setting buried deep in the bowels of the Unix configuration (.bashrc, .profiles printer.conf, somewhere) but I've been unable to locate the precise place to change this so that my X11 applications all print through lpr in a uniform 11 point font.
Any suggestions on where to start drilling for font oil?

Please contact Manhatten Assoc. for supporting their software.

  • No logic board

I'm so thankful for this discussion board. It's how I discovered that my ailing eMac had bad caps. So I have been waiting for over a month for a new logic board. I've read the scary posts about the incredibly long wait for the replacement. I understand it's a huge problem, but geeze, I need my computer. Now I'm reading that Apple is rectifying the problem by replacing eMacs in the REA program with new iMacs. How do I get in on that? Every time I call Apple (to see if there is any hope of a new logic board) they act as if they've never heard of the freezing eMac problems! Getting frustrated! Anyone else in the same boat?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Chuck, "bad caps" broadly refers to capacitors (an electronics component found in basically all electrical devices) that malfunction. They are apparently not that uncommon in the PC industry, though to my knowledge Apple has rarely fallen ill of badcaps, til recently.
The particular story here, revolves allegedly around a parts manufacturer in Asia which stole a formula for a capacitor from another company, however the formula was wrong, and the capacitors they produced quickly explode (bulge out of shape, and leak the chemicals inside).
These capacitors were first sold in about 2002, then withdrawn from sale after they were found to be faulty... Somehow Apple then ended up with this same batch in 2004 and used them in the 1.25Ghz eMac, the iMac G5, and a PowerMac.
The iMac G5 experienced problems within months of release, whereas for unknown reasons the eMacs didn't experience problems for 18 months after the date of sale.
If you have a 1.25Ghz eMac, you can open the RAM hatch under the computer to inspect 2 of the 12+ capacitors used inside your computer to see if they are looking out of shape/leaking brown substance. If so, call Apple.
