Emac restored

Just restored my emac while waiting for my new mac mini to arrive, all the files were erased. I have an EHD partioned with a clone of the previous emac content and the other half with over 100 GB of itunes.
What would need to be transfered from the EHD clone in order for my itunes to play? I am using this as a practice run while waiting for my new mini.

You need to be able to access the content of the iTunes library inside the Music folder of your home folder on the clone. This can be done by copying the entire folder over or by launching iTunes with the Option key held down and pointing it to that library.
If the iTunes media isn't stored in the same folder, you need to copy the database files over and then consolidate it from within iTunes.

  • Need help with emac restoration

I bought an eMac in a garage sale. It came with Tiger installed in it. I am completely new to Mac OS's. In the effort of trying to upgrade it to Leopard, I think I erased the hard disk(MacHD). After that it immediately restarted and got stuck on the apple logo screen with a spinning wheel below it. Now I didn't get a CD/DVD when I bought it. And with the help of my friend now I have a leopard image in a hard disk.( I have a 250gb hard drive, about 180 is partitioned with fat32 filesystem, and the other 60gb has the leopard image). I restored the leopard .dmg into the partition using the disk utility application with the help of his mac book. So can anyone help me on how I need to proceed.

Nope, boot the MBP using he t key, boot the eMac holding Option or alt, this should make the
    OK, booted the last way,
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

  • EMac won't boot of restore CD

I have an eMac running Panther that won't boot up (I don't remember what os version number).
Recently I bought my Mac a new ultra thin keyboard. This keyboard requires a new driver to run the Mac specific function keys. I downloaded the driver, installed it and it didn't work, so following these instructions: (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/26/fix-those-aluminium-keyboard-woes/) I tried reinstalling... with woeful results. My eMac will no longer go past the grey apple screen with the spinning wheel. Sometimes (not always) it ends up on the grey no entry sign.
I have tried to reboot off the eMac Install and Restore disk (no.1). It doesn't work, just ejects the disk and carries on (so I cannot run "archive and install"). I have tried booting holding down "C", ALT, CMD-OPT-SFT-DEL and have even tried to boot off my disks for earlier OSX versions (10.2 and 10.0.4). No luck with anything.
I was able to make the Hardware Test run but it found no errors.
I have reset PRAM and I still couldn't boot of the restore disk. I tried booting with CMD-V, both before and after resetting PRAM. Previously I got about 15 lines of text and then the machine stuck on "still waiting for root device". After resetting PRAM I get about 200 lines, but all saying "can't determine" or "couldn't alloc" or "can't generate" or "can't find" or "cannot resolve" or "did not complete" up until it gets to "IP Firewall loaded" at which point it freezes.
So I have run out of ideas... can anyone suggest what I can try next, or how I can finally get my eMac restore disk to boot up?
(I also tried to save my files by connecting my MacBook and using Target Disk Mode... but although I was able to connect ok, all the folders I need to copy have a 'access denied' icon next to them... so I couldn't get that to work either... very frustrating!)

That you can boot off the Apple Hardware Test CD tells us the optical drive is OK. You have the original OS X discs that came with the eMac, which certainly should be able to boot the machine. The most obvious explanation for being able to boot from the AHT disc but not the OS X Install disc would be if the OS X Install disc is defective. Do you recall if you ever booted from the bundled OS X Install disc before? Does the disc show any smudges or scratches when viewed at an angle under a strong light? A more certain test would be to put the eMac OS X Install disc into the MacBook to see if the MacBook can recognize and read the disc.
If the eMac's OS X Install disc does appear defective, there are a couple of things to try. First is physically cleaning the disc; you can rub it with a soft lint-free cloth using distilled water (look in the auto section of grocery or drug stores) --- distilled avoids any trace chemicals or sediments in tap water --- or using the cleaning solution and mechanical disc spinner from any commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit (I've used Phillips brand cleaning kits for some time). That should work well for smudges or any buildup of grime on the disc. If using a commercial CD lens/disc cleaning kit, use the lens cleaner for a pass or two in the eMac, just to improve the signal-to-noise ratio when trying to read th OS X Install disc.
If cleaning the disc doesn't help, you can try a couple of things. A phone call to eventually reach a live operator at the Apple Store or AppleCare will let you ask the person on the other end to check if there are any bundles disc sets available for your specific eMac model (you'll want to have the info in eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model handy). Such disc sets are sometimes unofficially available long after the Mac model with which they shipped goes off the sales catalog, and are available for a fairly modest charge.
Otherwise, you'd want to find another set of OS X Install discs that will work with your specific eMac model and let you do an Archive and Install to preserve your mail and other user data in place (which is easier than copying all user data to the MacBook, doing an erase & install on the eMac, and then dragging your data back from the MacBook). Finding an eMac-specific (gray label) set of discs on someplace like eBay would be least expensive but most time-consuming, and you'd need to make sure you get the right model eMac discs. It would be more certain of the results to get a retail (black label) OS X Install disc. Panther 10.3 of the same or higher dot version number as the eMac shipped with will work. It may or may not work to use a non-eMac model specific gray label Panther OS X Install disc if you afterwards use the Mac OS X Combo Update 10.3.9 on the eMac.
It might be easiest to just get the retail Tiger OS X 10.4 discs (still available by calling the Apple Store last time I'd heard), especially if you qualify for the educational or federal government/contractor purchasing discount. Upgrading to Leopard may also be an option with your eMac, but Tiger is fully mature and has lesser CPU and memory demands than Leopard. If you do go for the retail OS X disc route, be sure to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk from the Installer's menu --- Disk Utility in Tiger 10.4.2 and later is significantly more capable than DU in earlier versions.
And, come to think of it, upgrading to 10.4 would also eliminate the conflict with the keyboard function keys software that started all this in the second place (first place being the spilled chocolate milk on the original keyboard; just be grateful it wasn't small inquisitive peanut butter and jelly smeared hands trying to insert a CD into the optical drive).
Good luck! This is certainly an aggravating experience to go through for what should've been a two minute job of swapping keyboards! (If it helps any, from experience I can tell you that before you know it, instead of worrying about your children with computers, you'll be worrying about them with cars.)

  • Can emac installer discs be used to install OS 9.2.2 on Pismo G3?

I have a full set of original eMac installer discs, and want to use one set to install OS9.2.2 on an Apple Pismo G3.
    Can this be done?
I've heard Apple OEM installer discs are "Mac machine specific", and can't be used to install OS software onto other
Apple Macs of a different model. But, I'm not sure if this is true, as there may be conflicting views on this subject.
The OEM eMac discs I have are as follows:
    • Two (2) disc OEM set
       eMac OS X 10.4
       AHT version 2.5
       Disc version 1.1
       2Z691-5518-A
    • Five (5) disc set:
eMac OS X and Mac OS 9
       Mac OS version 9.2.2
       CD version 1.0
       691-3981-A
So the question is .... if OS X Tiger 10.4 has already been installed on the Pismo G3 .... can the above installer discs of (5) OS 9.2.2 be used to install OS 9.2.2 on the Pismo G3?
I would assume the Pismo G3 Hard drive would already have to have the OS9 drivers installed, during the OS 10.4 installation (showing an OS 9 "System Folder" on the HD, to be able to receive the OS 9.2.2 installer discs. I also understand that if installable, that the OS 9.2.2 would only open in the "Classic" mode.
Any information as to if the above eMac OS 9.2.2 installer discs can be used to install OS 9.2.2 on the Pismo G3 ... would be appreciated.
OR .... if other OS9.2.2 installer discs would be more appropiate, and if so, what model of Apple installer discs to use on the Pismo G3.

    dalstott::
Below is the OS 9.2.2 "System Folder" that I was able to pull off the Number 1 - OEM eMac "Restore Sofware Disc".
It's obviously different than the first "System Folder" that I have, which I also showed above in a previous reply.
Since the above is off the eMac OS 9.2.2 installer disc, this is the one I think would be more appropiate for copy/dragging to the Pismo G3 Hard Drive.
Even though the Applications in the OS 9 Applications Folder are older, and probably not of much interest ... I also have the following "Applications (Mac OS 9)" folder, also taken off the eMac OS 9 installer disc. If I were to copy/drag this "Applications (Mac OS 9)" folder, to the Pismo G3 Hard Drive ... where do you think it should be placed?  In the OS 9.2.2 "System Folder" ... or separately on the main Hard Drive, with all the other main folders?
Note: All these installer folders were "Invisable" disc folders, and only "viewable" using FileBuddy in Mountain Lion 10.8.5.

  • Emac disk utility not detecting ibook hardrive in Firewire mode

ok so i got this ibook g3 (800 mhz version) with no os on it so i hooked it up to my emac via firewire and booted the ibook in the firewire mode. i go into the emac disk utility to format the drive and its not there. i tried booting my emac in fire wire mode and the ibook finds the Emacs drive as a bootable drive. i tried booting the ibook from the drive but all that happed was getting the apple logo with the loading thing below it. i think the ibook is unable of booting since its 10.5.2. so any reason why the disk utility on the emac isnt finding the drive or is it a bad drive?

thanks for the help, i'm pretty sure its a bad drive or a lose connection now, i used my emac restore disk with 10.3 on it and was able to find the disk drive with a disk in it on the ibook in TDM but not the hard drive. guess im going to have to do the 20+ screw surgery on it to put in a new hard drive/look at the connection. i should just save and buy a macbook lol

  • Two emacs having the exact same dvd read / cdrw write issues

We have two emacs that have the exact same cdrw / dvd drive: Model:HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B
    Revision: 2.05
both emacs eject any dvd (including the emac restore dvds they both came with) - and get cd burn issues (even trying to burn at 1x speed and just 20 megs of data).
I have a third emac that has the superdrive and it works fine - it is just these two emacs using OS X 10.3.9 on both emacs.
Just installed a brand new DVD burn/cdrw internal drive into one of the emacs and it still has the exact same issues.
Has there been a recall issued on these emacs or the drives? I feel it is something in the software that could be wrong - where can I check to make sure I have the correct drivers installed?
any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated

  • World book emac favor

This will probably be lost in the ether, but just thought I'd put it out there.
I have lost the emac restore CDs.  I had worldbook 2004 and 2005 previously installed and have replaced the hard drive and upgraded from 10.4. to 10.5
Even though I copied the huge world book folders and put them in the new drive, the world book app won't run and I am instructed to reinstall.  I have the world book 2004 CD but I think this is only multimedia and not the installer, which I think was only to be found in the restore CDs.
Would anyone care to send me the world book 2004 or 2005 installer (using something like pacifist to extract it?)  just a shot in the dark!  I have no idea what size it would be, but maybe it can be isolated from the other resources of the program (timeline, etc) and it wouldn't be very large?
The error message doesn't complain about not being able to run in 10.5, just that the application was moved and needs to be reinstalled or words to that effect. It actually loads all the menus too, but they are grayed out.  I did see some restore CDs on ebay so that might where I'm going with it next.  Surprisingly, games like nanosaur and others didn't complan at all about being moved.
    Thanks!

Hey Lennart, that link you gave was so helpfull, thanks a lot. I found this.
Follow these steps to reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes from your Restore DVD disc:
Note: As the additional applications cannot be selectively installed, this will reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, Acrobat Reader, iCal, and iSync.
Insert the Software Install and Restore DVD disc. Do not start up the computer from this disc.
From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
Do one of the following, depending on the type of computer the Restore DVD disc is for:
Power Mac G4 (FW 800) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerMac G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages
PowerBook G4 (12-Inch) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerBook Software/System/Installation/Packages
    PowerBook G4 (867 MHz/1 GHz) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerBook G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages
iMac (17-inch 1GHz) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/iMac Software/System/Installation/Packages

  • Deleted some (root) files & now finder won't start...now stuck in Classic 9

I have an eMAc 10.2.8 and was re-installing the system X and classic 9.2 software with all security updates etc, when I accidentally wiped some of the quicktime (root) files and extensions.
When it rebooted, Finder would not load - I can see everything on the dock but there is no top menu bar and nothing on the screen. Although some of the software (safari, explorer etc) will open and the top menu shows the normal file, edit etc.
I tried using the MacOSX Install Disc (pressing C while restarting) to reinstall the missing quicktime files, but it simply logs in as normal and doesn't recognise the disk or show anything on the screen. The same thing happens with the eMac Restore Software discs (Mac OS X & Mac OS 9).
I then switched my startup volume via System to Classic 9.2 and restarted the computer. All looked good, but once it has finished loading, there is nothing on the screen but grey lines running vertically down and no dock or top menu bar and the disk eject doesn't work. And again, rebooting with the disks while holding C doesn't seem to work.
Help someone....I can't get back to OSX and I know that everything is still on the HD because I checked it using Disk Utility prior to switching operating systems.
I even tried Firmware (holding the on button for a few minutes) to reboot directly from the OSX disc, but am not entirely sure what to do. Have I completely stuffed it?

I don't know why but your Mac is ignoring the "C" key and insisting on trying to start from the normal, damaged X... One explanation might be any keyboard - including an Apple wireless keyboard - that needs drivers or utilities; then the keyboard wouldn't be read until after the "C" key was too late…
Please rememeber there will never by any Mac that can start in Classic mode. That might not matter when things are going smoothly and in trobules like this, the same confusion that led to that description might be helping to helix the system.
This is still clearly an X, not a Classic problem and you will still get better help more quickly in the X pages, here

I'm not sure what you expected to acomplish trying the eMac Firmware Update via the power button when there's no firmwar eupdate to install. You may have been thinking og resetting Open Firmware, but that's unlikely to help if the System and System Folders are corrupted. The procedures in Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts should help, especially the Archive and Install Feature. Note that you have to hold the 'c' key down until you see the grey background / Apple logo / spinning wheel, and this can take longer than you'd expect; alternately, with the OS X Install disc in the eMac, you can use Startup Manager to select the CD.

  • Can't do ANYTHING...HELP ASAP!!

My son just got this eMac from a program through his school. I can't do much on there to even set it up for him because I need the Administrator login name and password! Does anyone know any way I can override this or get around it so I can set up internet and even change the time setting?!?! I would like to make myself the "Administrator" since my son is only 12...is there ANY way I can do this? Apparently the people who gave us the computer aren't around to help me!

I agree with the actions, but not the reasoning.
Any second hand Mac you acquire, it will be best to do a clean instal of the OS, not because there could be security issues etc, but just simply because you don't know when it last had a clean instal, what un-required-by-yourself software may be installed on it, potentially slowing it down, etc etc etc.
A clean instal gives you a clean start, without any unknown hassles.
EG I helped my parents buy an iMac off eBay a while ago. As I was live 3000km away, I wasn't able to do a clean instal for them. Each time they booted it, the computer kept asking them to buy some expired software that the previous owner had installed. This went on for over a year before I was able to get down there and clean it up. The computer also had issues printing, possibly from some other print software that was installed.
Coming from a school, it would be more likely to have increased network security, rather than "holes" in it... but again, this may not be something you need or want.
If it doesn't have the "eMac Restore" DVD or CD, then get on eBay and buy Tiger/find it in the bargain bin at a Apple reseller, and instal it fresh.

  • How to upgrade G3 iMac to 10.3 Panther?

I have an old Blueberry iMac running OS 9.2.1 that I would like to upgrade to Panther for the kids. It has 350mhz processor, 192meg ram, 40gig hard drive, a cd-rom only drive and firmware version 4.1.9. From what I understand I need retail panther install disks (my eMac restore disks not only won't do the job, is is illegal to do so) and I need an external DVD drive since my Blueberry is cd-rom only. My main concern is cost. I don't mind buying the Panther retail disks on ebay but I really have no other need for the external dvd drive. So my main questions are:
    1. Are the 10.3 Panther disks available on cd-rom or are they DVD only?
    2. If I buy the DVD install disks is there an alternative to buying an external DVD drive (such as installing over a local network from my eMac, or copying the installer to a cd-rom disk?)
Thank you so much for any advice can give
    dugwim

Hi dugwim! And Welcome To Discussions!
    1. The Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, are on CD.
    2. Therefore, you don't need a DVD drive.
a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.
You'll find System Requirements in these links:
    Panther
    Tiger
    Additionally,
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • Can I copy 10.4.2. DVD to external drive?

I buy the new OS but didn't believe they would sell it wothout a CD version.
On a system with a DVD, can I copy the installation DVD to an external drive then use that to upgrade my CD only system?
I bought an IPOD Nano but it needs a system with 10.4.

If you want to "copy" the DVD system to an external
and then install it on a computer that does not have a DVD ROM drive,
it will be very tricky, very time consuming, very confusing,
and there is a chance that what is installed may not be the same exact 100%
of files installed if the "proper way" (boot from OEM CD/DVD) also the way I'm referring to you don't even have the options such as erase and install, preserve user profiles, archive and install, and etc... as you would if you were booting from the DVD/CD.
In theory I think it can be done with 10.4 (but I haven't done it with it yet, although I've done it with a eMac Restore/10.2.4 Install DVD I bought off of eBay and then ran the install while booting off of my H.D. even while the installer files were on the H.D.)
Another way besides what is mentioned above is to contact Apple cause I think there is an exchange program where you can exchange your Tiger DVD and get Tiger CD's (with a nominal fee of course.)
I would suggest going through Apple, in fact it is safer that way, go through Apple or see if you can find OEM Tiger CD's on eBay.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

  • New hard drive in Pismo wont accept 10.3 install

Not sure how much traffic this board gets but I hope there's enough to get this answered:
My original 10GB travelstar was clicking madly so I decided to replace it with this
    TOSHIBA MK8032GAX 80GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM
It wasn't recognized by the 10.3.5 install CD, so I ran Disk Utility and erased (without writing to zeros) and then the installer gave me a "! Cannot Install Mac OS X on this Volume, this volume will not start up in Mac OS X" when I selected it
So I tried writing all volumes to zero and now the installer brings up the hard drive with a red "!" on it but it wont even let me select it (it's not dimmed out though ??). I tried partitioning it in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I get the same result.
Can I install 10.3.5 on a blank hard drive? do I need to install 9.2 first? I could use any help I might get, thank you.
    Powerbook "Pismo" 400MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.5)   (Blank) Toshiba 80GB ATA-6

jpl, thanks for the reply. Mac OS Extended (journaled) is the only format I've been choosing. I have tried partitioning the HDD into a single and 2 partitions, both didn't work BUT I did find out the source of the problem.
I bought the Panther DVDs on ebay, the seller claimed they were retail, but when I got them it became obvious they selling off restore discs. They also included, for free, CD "backups" (pirated copies) of the software in case the DVDs (which turned out to be eMac restore DVDs) were not compatible with the Mac you wanted to upgrade. My powerbook's optical drive doesn't do too well with DVDs anymore so I tried the CDs first and that's where the problem was. I tried both a multi-computer retail version DVD of 10.2 and the eMac Restore DVDs, they both had no problems letting me install.
I'm running 10.3.9 with no problems now and I was able to salvage most of the information of my 10GB drive with an external IDE to USB adapter.
Marking question as answered, thanks again.

  • G4 AGP Tower Problems :(

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forums here so if I make a newbie mistake bear with me ^_^
I acquired a used PowerMac G4 Tower with a blank hard drive (it is the one that came with the machine: Quantum Fireball 20 GB).
Specs are: AGP Graphics model, 400MHz, 512MB RAM, 20GB HD
So I went ahead and ordered an os 9.2.2 disc on ebay and bought a 10.4 disc from a local apple store.
I cannot get either operating system to install. I am able to boot up from both discs. However, once I click install the machine freezes and the usb power cuts out (logitech optical mouse and apple white keyboard stop responding, neither are wireless)
Now, the disc I'm using for OS 9 is a gray eMac restore CD. I know, I should get a retail 9 disc (white + orange), but it installed fine on both my imac tray-loaders and I read in the readme file that it should work with a powermac g4 as well. Yet, the exact same freezing problem also occured with a retail tiger disc!
I believe that my firmware needs an update, but I cant install it until I am able to boot from os 9 on the hd. Also, I have pressed the reset button on the motherboard to zap the pram but that didn't help. I can get into open firmwire if that matters.
I can't figure out whether this is a software or hardware problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Further machine specs are in my profile under biography.

PC Fan, welcome, here are a few things you might try.
    1. Since you are able to boot from the OS 9 CD open Disk First Aid from the Applications/Utilities folder. Then run the Verify to ensure that the drive is OK. Now run the Disk Repair and see if this helps.
    2. If not, then open Drive Setup and Initialize the hard drive. At this point I would recommend that you use Zero all Data, it takes more time but this is time well spent.
    3. If you still can not install the OS try connecting the two computer together via a Crossover cable. If the hard drive of the G4 mounts on the iMac desktop you can install the OS 9 to the iMac and copy it to the G4 via an Ethenet cable.
When I was visiting a friend about a year ago I encounter a very similar situation. We installed OS 9.1 on a PM 6500, then moved the hard drive to a G4 GE, booted the G4 from the 4 BG 6500 HD, updated the firmware then installed the new larger hard drive and OS X. The G4 would not boot from the hard drive with the 9.2.2 that was already installed on the 6500. We think that this was a combination of the processor upgrade and the OS 9 Helper. So a fresh copy of the OS on the iMac could be the answer.
