EMac stuck on Disconnecting

I have 2 questions on disconnecting:
1) Why am I constantly being disconnected from the internet? I've been fine for a year or two. I remember this happening before and it somehow fixed itself, I believe. Now, all of a sudden, as of 2-3 weeks ago, I am being disconnected from my dial-up access number (phone number) 6 times within as many minutes! Other times, I'm fine for a few hours and then it starts disconnecting me again and again and again. Can happen at any hour, day or night, no pattern detected.
2) Also, when I am disconnected, sometimes my eMac won't completely disconnect itself and I have to reboot to try to connect to the internet again. Anyone know why that happens? I remember this happening in the past and then it hasn't done it for quite a long time. I can't remember if I fixed it or it just corrected itself.
I put in a help ticket to AT&T worldnet and, knock me over with a feather!, they actually called me today! They asked if I had call waiting and I do but it doesn't disconnect me when I receive a call plus I only get 1 or 2 calls a day. Would that, indeed, be the cause of being disconnected?? They gave me a code to use to disable it, I guess but I'm hesitant to use it. And if this was the case, the why hasn't it been in the past year or two? I've always had call waiting.
And...the guy told me to check for updated modem drivers. I've been using Macs for over 20 yrs. and have never had to update my modem drivers. Is this correct info.? And, if so, how do I find it? I've tried to no avail on the Apple download webpage.
Added info: there is only one dial-in number in our town for dial-up access to the internet, I have set my computer to alert me when I have an incoming call so the window pops up and I can ignore or answer the call, and I have set my computer to do a daily Systems Update check for any updates.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Ended up being a bad modem. AT&T sent a replacement and now it's been fine. (knock on wood)

  • Airport Extreme card installed, eMac stuck on gray Apple screen at start-up

I just installed an Airport Extreme card on my eMac (USB 2.0). When I try to boot, it gets stuck on the gray Apple screen, with the spinning gray "spokes." The card is pushed as far as it will go into the slot, and the antenna is all the way in as well. When I take the card out, the computer boots up fine. I tried installing the software first, but it doesn't appear to be installed after it does the required restart for new software. I'm not sure if I have the software already...
At any rate, the biggest issue is that it won't boot past the gray screen. Any thoughts? (I have a version of Tiger, though I'm not sure exactly which because I'm sick of the un/install process at the moment, and am staring at the gray screen.)

Hi, I have a 1GHz eMac ATI and had a problem installing my Airport Extreme card as well. It would boot fine, but the card would not connect. It turned out that the card was not seated properly and maybe this is something for you to look at.
If you look at the Airport slot with the card and cover removed you will see the end of a black plastic guide bar on the right of the slot when viewed from the front of the machine. (Assuming the ATI eMac and USB 2.0 are the same in this regard) When the card and the aerial are fully seated home, the silver top of the aerial plug should be just about level with the front end of the black plastic bar, just a whisker or 2 sticking out. If it is more than this (more than say 1-2mm - 1/16th inch) then your card is not far enough in to be connected properly. Believe me I found this out through trial and error and there is not much difference between the right position and not.
It is not just a matter of pushing harder, you need to wiggle it slightly up and down and push firmly with 2 fingers, one on each side so that the force is evenly distributed. Mine needed just a smidgeon more force than what it took to slide the machine back - try it a little bit at a time. Put it up against a wall so it doesn't slide back, but don't apply excessive force. Part of the problem is that is hard to get your fingers in there to do the job.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod 80 GB stuck after disconnecting

I just bought two iPod's 80 GB for my daughters.
The first one I synchronised flawlessly with my iTunes library, although it took 12 hours with the USB-connection to load the some 9,000 songs.
The second one started the synchronisation process, when I saw that I had mistyped my daughter's name. I tried to correct it, but to no avail. So I made the stupid and fatal mistake: Remembering that it took 12 hours to load, I disconnected the iPod while loading, assuming that I could restart it easily.
Now the iPod is not recognised by the computer, let alone iTunes.
When connected to the USB bus it has two alternate states:
    1. unlit grey display, showing the Apple logo.
a soft clicking sound reminding of a disk starting up is heard
After a couple of minutes the second states appears for some minutes
    2. unlit grey display with a large battery icon showing about 1/4/ charge
    This goes on and on.
    Reset, restart, reinstall, nothing works.
    I appreciate all help.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iTunes 7.0.2

Try putting the iPod in disk mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Then connect it to iTunes, and restore it once it is recognized. If it's not recognized by iTunes but appears on the desktop, go into Disk Utility and erase the drive, then try again.

  • Canon 1100 printer and Z40 rip with OSX.6  (OS10.6 Snow Leopard)

I have seen a quite few people stuck with older printers under 10.6. Here is my fix for getting my Canon 1100 with a Z40 rip (the big box that sits to the side of the printer) to work with the new operating system.
How to connect a CLC 1100 and Z40 rip to Apple OS10.6 (OSX.6)
    PART ONE
The PPD needs to be copied into the appropriate place
on the Mac /Library/Printers/PPDs/Content/Resources and this will make
it selectable within the add printer wizard.
The PPD should be able to be found in the OS9 driver download here:
    http://www.canon.com.au/drivers/confirm?f=11704
To be sure, rename the file to: Canon-Z40.ppd
(do not worry that it is a text file and appears different to the other PPD files.
    PART TWO
    1) On the rip go to Run Setup and then to Network Setup and then to Protocol Setup.
Turn Apple talk off (it will not find the Appletalk network as it does not exist on 10.6)
Then go to TCP/IP settings and then to Ethernet settings.
    - Enable TCP/IP for Ethernet - YES
    - Enable Auto IP - NO
Then for IP address look up your IP address on the network settings on your computer then go through the following steps: change the IP setting on the rip as a later part of that series. In my example the network settings on my computer were 192.168.1.68. As there may be other things on the DHCP network pick a high number such as 192.168.1.205
Subnet mask should be the same as Network settings on your computer again. In my case it was 255.255.255.0
The rip should then say you are successfully bound to ethernet. It will then ask for a gateway number which is only important if you have more than one network. I just put a random number there and you will get a message saying that number is not recognized. Do not worry about it. If you have a second network then enter that number
    PART THREE
Go to the add printer wizard in your system settings.
Select LPR/LPD (Line Printer Daemon - LPD)
Now in the address field put in the number you used as an IP address in the rip. In my case 192.168.1.205
In the Queue field enter: print
    The above step is important!!
Enter a name and location for your printer if you want.
In Print using go to Select Printer software and then select
    Canon ColorPass-Z40 Color Server.
The in the next menu select 1120 as your printer.
You should now be good to go!!
The only other thing is that if your rip will take a while to process the new settings (5 minutes in my case) If it gets stuck then disconnect the ethernet cable and re-start.

    Thanks Donald, that was it!
I knew it'd be something easy.. Now the thing I'd like to know is, how do I get rid of software that is useless to me? I'd really like not to have excess software installed, but I'm not confident that I can just go in and start trashing anything that looks like junk. (If you do that on a Windows computer, you set in motion a diabolical chain reaction that brings about the apocalypse.) I'm a pretty new Mac user. Is there an app that'll do this task?
    Thanks again!

  • ITunes 11 keeps freezing

    Hello,
I updated to iTunes 11 a few days ago (and I seem to like it, btw) and everything was fine. Until this morning. Everytime I start a song, iTunes just freezes after 20 seconds or so. The song keeps playing, but the software is completely stuck and needs a forced quit.
I tried rebooting, reinstalling etc. but nothing seems to help as of yet.
I have a mid '10 macbook pro and a library with 10.000 songs, all of them in iTunes Match...
Does anyone else have this problem? Any idea what's going wrong?
edit: Sorry, i only just noted the other thread. I've tried the 32-bit thing, but it wasn't running in that mode to begin with...

I found the solution. Apparantly, iTunes can't handle my iPhone 4 as of yet. Everytime I connect it, after a few seconds the color wheel pops up and it's stuck. Disconnect it, and it seems to work alright. Well...

  • Imac intel self scrolling and zooming

    Hi Guys,
<Sorry for my English, It's not my native language>
In the last couple days I found that my iMac is randomly scroll  to the bottom of page
in finder, chrome, safari, photoshop and every application
Today it just getting worse becaust it started to zoom in and out
Then, a few hours ago it started to scroll and zoom at the same time
I've look around the discussion forum and found some thread abou this issue
    but there seem no solution.
my system is iMac intel 27inch
    osx 10.6.8 installed
    magic mouse + wacom bamboo
I'm quite sure that the problem is from the OS  becaust I tried remove the wacom, keyboard and magic mouse
    but it didn't help.
    Please anyone could help??
    Thanks in advance!!

THat behavior sounds like it could be caused by a stuck key on the keyboard.
If the icon that is selected autonomously is the same one each time, then the first letter of its name may be a clue. If it is something other than the alphanumerical last first-letter of names of items on the desktop, then its first letter is probably the stuck key.
If its name's first letter is the last alphanumerically, then it gets trickier to find. For example, the last filename alphanumerically on my desktop starts with the letter T which means that if I press and hold T, U, V, W, X, Y, or Z it will be selected.
One way to test whether the cause is a stuck key - disconnect the keyboard (unplug it if USB, turn it off if wireless) and wait.

  • Possible 10.5.2 issue with ARD logout / System Monitor -unable to reconnect

Hi. Has anyone else seen this 10.5.2 problem with Apple Remote Desktop (ARD)/Server Monitor...
I have a Xserve G5 without a screen/keyboard and use ARD to connect to do any terminal administration.
I’ve been running Leopard since mid-January and on Sunday (17th February) I installed 10.5.2.
All appears to be fine, except…. I can use ARD to connect and do stuff on the server, HOWEVER when I logout I don’t get the login screen and can’t reconnect to the server using ARD (I get "Connection failed" error message). Plus, it also impacts Server Monitor as, after this, I can no longer re-connect to the server.
This is a real problem for me as the only way I can get ARD/login to re-connect is to re-boot the server by turning it off using the on-off button (which I don’t like doing as it could lead to disc corruption etc) and it’s a production server.
    John

I've been having just the same problem. I can connect via ARD and log in but if I log out I'm stuck. Disconnecting without a log out works fine but if I log out remotely and watch the screen on the server itself then there is a spinner on a light blue screen indefinitely, suggesting that I never fully log out, and hence can never log back in.
With regard to forcing a reboot, I can still get in with ssh and issue a "sudo reboot" command (which will save your disc drives), but I'd rather not have to reboot every time I do any admin at all, and I'd rather not have to leave the console logged in.
Any suggestions or work-arounds gratefully received.

  • VPN connects but does not function when resuming from sleep

THe VPN on my ibook works fine - it connects and the data goes through. but when i put it to sleep (lid close/power->sleep) and than wake it up VPN connects fine and that's all. data stucks. i disconnect it - all works, pings go and so on. i connect it again, it connects, and pings stop, tracerouting stops and that's it. any ideas?

Whatever you are connected to thinks you are disconnected by the sound of it, or it is confused about the current session and is not allowing traffic. Something in the "sign off" settings on the other may be misconfigured.
You might want to post what you are connecting to (business network, etc). PPTP? L2TP?

  • OWA not working on two machines

Office 2013 on home and laptop computer.  Home computer obvisouly external network, laptop computer is on network when at work.  Exchange 2013 is setup and my desktop computer at work also has Outlook 2013 with no issues.  No one else (so
far) has reported any issues as well.
Activesync works, like iPhone, iPad, Windows Mail.
Outlook 2013 is just stuck in disconnected state.  I deleted my mail profile on my laptop and recreated it.  Autodiscover fills in all the information automatically but then I get "The name cannot be resolved.  The connection to Microsoft
Exchange is unavailable.  Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action".  With wireshark, I see the traffic going to and from the internal Exchange server but I don't know what it is since its https tls 1.2, so its all encrypted
    data.
If I click OK on this dialog box, I see my [email protected] for the exchange server which matches the working Outlook on my desktop.  What is different however is on the laptop, under mailbox it appended =SMTP: in front of my [email protected]  I
clear this out and it still doesn't work.  It eventually asks for the password and I enter it in but nothing.
On home computer with the same initial issue, since I did not delete the mail profile yet I checked outlooks connection status and I just see my one server name GUID with a status of disconnected.
On my work desktop where outlook works, when I check outlook connection status I see the first line is disconnected, but the next 30 lines with different GUID's are all "Established".  I did a test autodiscover from off network (home) and
on network (desktop) and no issue there, however msrca test outlook connectivity gives me an error 401 not authorized.
Any idea what to check and where to look first?

Ok I got my home computer and laptop working.
I just closed outlook on my work destkop computer.  Remember I said it had 30+ guid's listed in Outlook's connection window?  Well a week ago we were migrating to room mailboxes, and I was giving myself full permissions to them so I could export
a room calendar to a pst file, then import it back in to the new room mailboxes.  Well that was all done and I removed full access to those mailboxes in exchange, but for some reason my Outlook 2013 client still had all the GUID's listed.  I wonder
if that imposed some sort of connection limit with my account and exchange (makes sense why no one else called about this type of issue).
So with outlook closed, in a few minutes I relaunched outlook on my home computer (I am connected via RDP right now) and it worked fine (only 5 GUID's showing in Outlook connection status).  I did a repair on my laptop's Outlook profile and it loaded
fine as well.  7 GUID's are listed on the on-premise laptop outlook connection status and its downloading the mailbox as I type this.
msrca still gives this"An HTTP 401 Unauthorized response was received from the remote Unknown server. This is usually the result of an incorrect username or password.
If you are attempting to log onto an Office 365 service, ensure you are using your full User Principal Name (UPN)." However I can ASSURE you autodiscover works as I tested both on premise and off premise Outlook 2013 test autodiscover feature.

  • 10.5.7 softwareupdate command-line issue

    Hello,
I started to update from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 via ssh, worked fine for iTunes, but when it came to 10.5.7 got stuck @ 20, disconnected me from ssh.

    2. In serveradmin > system log I get TONS of errors since then... this is the most agressive,

  • Self replacing Superdrive DVR-104 Any Tips - Have You Replaced It Yourself?

In a previous post I mentioned probably replacing the original DVR-104 Pioneer Superdrive myself. Has anyone done this on their own?
I have the complete Apple eMac repair manual, and it shows the complete procedure for: (in order)
    • Removing the outer eMac housing shell
    • Disconnecting the Power Button connection
    • Procedure for discharging the CRT (Using Apple Tool)
    • Removing the "Faraday Plate"
    • Removing the Apple Pioneer Superdrive
With the right Apple tools, precautions, and "repair" skills to
take on a repair of this nature, I am willing to replace the Superdrive myself. Especially in light of the fact that an Apple repair shop has quoted me over $450.00 to do this very same repair.
It seems pretty straight forward, and after buying the Apple CRT discharge Tool and a new Pioneer DVR-104 (in the next week or so), I'm planning on making the change.
Has anyone here ever replaced the Superdrive themselves? Can you offer any suggestions or tips that might make things go any smoother?
I will greatly appreciate your input. Thanks

I recently upgraded my eMac which is 2004 USB 2.0 model to a Pioneer 111D 16x Superdrive. Basically you follow the manual directions for removing the drive and then you plug in the new drive in its place and put your eMac back together. I found that turning the case 45 degrees makes it a lot easier to detach and re-attach the power button cable. I bought my drive from eBay for about $60 and it even came bundled with Tiger for eMac. I just swapped the drives, put the eMac back together, and the drive booted the next time I turned my computer on.
It doesn't take $450.00 worth of expertise, I'll tell you that. You just need the allan keys to take apart the case, a phillips head screwdriver, and maybe a flathead screwdriver to help you remove the Faraday plate. In replacing your superdrive, you really won't be coming in contact with the CRT capacitors so just make sure to touch a metal part in your compter to prevent static discharge like you would when installing memory. The only real tip I can give you is to keep your hands off the circuit board as best you can--you don't want to break it or get it dirty from the oils on your skin--thankfully the mounting rail for the drive makes this extremely easy.

  • Black screen on boot /w four red LEDs on D-Bracket

Whenever I go switch the power off on my PSU and turn it back on, and after pressing the power button on the front of the computer it doesn't post it acts as if I kept pressing the reset button.
The D-braket shows 4 red leds (which means damaged/not installed processor).
But if I hold the power button to turn if off, then I turn it back on it works flawlessly!
Am I doing something wrong? I didn't have this problem before.
    Specs are below....
    BioHaz

I did a Google search and found this below...
This happens to be my exact same problem, it happens when you turn on the PSU switch then turn on the computer immediately after that. It seems like you just have to wait.
    Is this a common problem?
    Should I worry about this?

The old black screen on boot up with four red LEDs on the D-Bracket
    is a fairly common problem.
So far I've only seen four fixes for the problem.
    1.  Defective motherboard (Although this is seldom the problem)
    2.  Power supply is defective, or you forgot to connect the four
wire auxiliary power connecter to the motherboard.  The auxiliary power
connecter must be connected for this motherboard to work.
    3.  Your reset switch is stuck.  Disconnect the reset switch from the
motherboard, then try to boot up.
    4.  This one is weird.  It fixed my problem, however, based on the
troubleshooting you've done, I don't hold out hope it will fix yours.
For some strange reason, some MSI motherboards will not boot
if you've just plugged them in.  Plug in the computer, make sure
the power strip and the switch on the power supply are all in the
"ON" position, then go grab a beer.  After waiting a couple of minutes,
    turn on the computer.
I know it sounds weird.  But I have the same motherboard and CPU.
If I turn on the power strip and attempt to boot my computer immediately,
I get a black screen and four red LEDs.  If I turn on the power strip and
wait a minute or two, the computer boots up every time and works
    perfectly.
    Hope this helps.
