EMac SuperDrive won't mount DVDs

My eMac won't mount any DVDs, including the OS X 10.3 DVD with my system software.
The SuperDrive will mount CDs that I can play and rip with iTunes.
I think I have followed most of the suggestions that I have found posted here in this forum, including restarting the system and starting the DVD Player and then inserting the disk. I have tried a cleaner CD as well.
As I understand it, the Firmware update for SuperDrives that is posted on the Apple site is for eMacs with USB 2.0, newer machines than mine.
I have had the computer for just over two years and I haven't used the DVD feature much. This seems like a premature failure if I have to replace this drive already.
Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks,
Geof

I am glad to hear of your good experience.
I am in the same place: my eMac is just over two years old. Here is where my situation differs: I don't have AppleCare, so this will be my nickel if I need to replace the drive.
Yes, it is a Sony optical drive.
I tried the things that Don suggested above and the drive still refuses to mount any DVD at all. I think that, like you, I have a hardware problem.
Thanks to both of you for your posts.

  • Windows 7 under bootcamp won't mount dvds

Windows 7 under bootcamp will no longer mount DVD disks, whether data ROMs or movies.  Audio CDs work fine, don't have any CD-ROMs to test with.
As far as I can tell this happened after upgrade to OS X 10.9.5. Computer is a 2010-vintage iMac, 21.5" with 8 GB RAM and 500 GB hard drive.    Previously had Bootcamp 3.2 but upgraded to 4.0 and see the same thing.
When I insert a DVD 1 of 2 things happens:
    - spins for a few 10's of seconds then the computer ejects it
    - DVD-RW comes up in Windows Explorer, but when I click on it only thing that shows is "desktop.ini" and right-click menu options are only to format or burn something to the disk.  I.e., is seen as a blank DVD RW even though it's a commercial DVD.
Most post on similar issues are for cases where the drive doesn't show up at all, but that's not the problem I'm having.
Would appreciate any help on this; it's not acceptable to have such SW issues on a computer that still otherwise works fine.  Apple wants to charge me $$ for even an online chat session since it's out of warranty, and I don't want to lug to the store.

if it works in OS X then I would ask here Boot Camp
if the issue is also in OS X then likely it's  a hardware defect with the optical drive

  • MacBook won't mount DVDs

My MacBook has suddenly stopped mounting DVDs. The drive will spin up, but the DVD never shows up in the Finder or in other apps (DVD Player, etc.). I've reinstalled (archive and install) the system software AND updated to the latest system (10.4.7 at this point), and still no luck.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

Can it play a CD? Run the system profiler utility. See if it can find your drive and what it says about it. I'd suggest contacting applecare.

  • Installed MediaCentral--now P'Book won't mount DVDs

    Hi there,
Just installed the latest version of MediaCentral (http://www.equinux.com/us/products/mediacentral/index.html) a few hours ago. Unfortunately, I now cannot get my PowerBook to mount DVD volumes. Apple's DVD Player does indeed start up on its own when I insert a DVD (as I have it configured to), but the volume just doesn't appear on the desktop.
I can only surmise that MediaCentral is responsible in view of the proximity in time. I trashed the plist files for both DVD Player and MediaCentral, but there's no change.
Please help! Would be happy to provide more background info, if needed.
Thanks very much for your time,
    Nate

    Hi, Nate.
The best place to get help with your question is to report it to the MediaCentral folks. See the contact link on their support page. I don't mean to send you somewhere else, but it's their app, they get paid for it, they should support it.
You may simply want to uninstall MediaCentral. See my "Uninstalling applications" FAQ for important advice on uninstalling software.
    Good luck!

  • IBook superdrive won't play DVD it burned

We have a new iBook w/ a superdrive. We used it to burn a DVD with no problems except the iBook won't play it. The DVD will play in home DVD players and other Macs that we have tried but not in the iBook that authored the DVD (w/ iDVD). The DVD will mount - show up on the desktop - and the DVD Player app will launch but not play. Says it is an unsupported format or something like that.
    Any suggestions?

Did you use a DVD -RW?
In this case switch to -R, +R or +RW - sometimes DVD Player refuses to play DVD -RW media with the above mentioned error message.

  • Superdrive won't read DVDs since I installed Lion

Long story short - My hard drive died a few weeks ago. Everything was backed up on a Time Capsule. After installing a new hard drive, I went through and install each OSX I have had before transferring over my data and applications. I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2009 (came with Leopard). So, I went through, updated to Snow Leopard then Lion, then transferred over my data.
    1. I bought a game recently. All the specs fit for my computer. Put it in my SuperDrive and it would neither mount nor be recognized by the computer. My computer said it was a blank disc and spit it out after spinning it around for 5 minutes. I tested the game disc on another computer (my brother's Windows one) and it worked fine.
    2. After transferring my data over, my Adobe CS3 was having problems opening. I recieved a few messages about problems with the licenses and figured I would have to uninstall everything and reinstall everything. (Tried the license repair tool from Adobe too, couldn't get it to work). So I uninstalled everything I had from Adobe (using Adobe's uninstaller). I inserted the disc to be reinstalled and had the same problems. The disc kept spinning, wouldnt mount, and my computer said the disc was blank.
I have tested burned discs and film DVDs. All of them seem to work. I am just having issues with installation DVDs it seems. I have also tried mounting them in Toast Titanium and I can't get that to work either.
I took my computer to the Apple store, they said they could replace the drive or do testing on it for 5 days. I can't really afford to be with my computer for that extended amount of time right now nor do I want to drop $100 when this could be a software or firmware issue. My questions are:
    1. Will upgrading to Mountain Lion fix or make this issue worse?
    2. Are there any diagnostic tools I can run besides the AHT to find out if my drive is going to ****?
    3. Are there any software related things I can do to get my discs installed? (IE Installation over a network, using ISOs ->which I tried with the game, couldnt get that to work).
    Thank you!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • External superdrive won't mount to desktop

I have an almost new external superdrive attached to my January 2014 iMac 27".  It has seemed to be slow to load up the DVDs that I have my images backedup on and today it refuses to mount on the desktop.  Because it's not on the desktop or in the Finder window, I can't eject the DVD that is in it.  Any suggestions besides unplugging it, restarting the iMac, all of which I have tried?
    Thanks!

try a different usb port. mine does the same in the port furthest away from the stand, although everything else works fine in that port.

  • Both Superdrives won't burn DVDs or CDs

Hello everyone.  I'm having a serious problem.  Both of the Superdrives in my MacPro (1.1) will not burn DVDs or CDs.  They read discs just fine.  They just won't burn -- in ANY program (DVD Studio Pro, Finder, iDVD).
I have scoured the forums to answers to this problem, and NOTHING has worked.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
Here is a list of things I've tried:
    Disc cleaner
    Reducing burning speed
Different DVD media.  I've tried every brand and speed out there.  Verbatim, Memorex, Sony, generics, etc.
Re-install operation system.  The issue started on Leopard.  A reinstall didn't help.  I'm not on Snow Leopard and having the same problem.
Checked connections. (all plugs are snug)
    Some thoughts:
I find it hard to believe that this is a case of bad superdrives.  They both stopped working at the same time.
I have an external firewire burner that works just fine.
Thanks for whatever help or advice you can provide!

I'm not sure if we can post links to other mac forum threads, but I found this:
    Open System Preferences.
    Click on "International"
Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set "Order for sorted lists" to English
Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)
    Close System Preferences
    Restart computer
What you can try is typing the exact phrase of the error message into google... in parentheses, and you will find a lot of hits, and maybe the answer. Good luck!
PS... I know the "fix" above sounds like nonsense, and it might be, but several claimed it worked...

  • Superdrive won't accept DVD's

I've been having problems with my superdrive for I think a few months now. It started out that when I popped in a DVD it came up with an error that there are no volumes on this disk that Mac OS X can read or something like that (at this point I had Mac OS X 10.3.9). So I ordered a new superdrive from Apple (it was under warranty so it was free :)) and I installed it today and it came up with the same error. I had ordered a copy of OS X 10.4 upgrade and that arrived today as well so I installed it with no problems (lovin' Tiger by the way). I popped in a DVD again and it had the same problems. Somewhere I heard that maybe Classic was preventing it from working right so I got rid of that and then it came up with a different error: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.". Then I found that resetting some PVRAM or something like that might work. So I tried that and now it has that same not readable error. Can anyone help with this problem?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Vicki, you say you poped in a DVD.
What was it a Commercial Movie DVD or one that someone else burned? What kind of media DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R DVD+RW.
Generally you can place a DVD in your drive and it will play if there is a Commercial Movie on it.
However go to your Apple and then choose System Preferences and then choose CD-DVD and when this box opens make the selections as to what you want to happen from inserting Blank media or to open the player for commecial DVD and the same holds true with CD's that could be your problem.
Having Classic on your machine should not have any bearing on your machines ability to recognize or play any media.

  • DVD Drive Won't Mount DVD+R Disks

I tried to insert a DVD+R disk with photos on it but when it's inserted it's says that the "Disk inserted cannot be read by this computer." I then inserted several different DVD+Rs and nothing but it will read a CD+R so I am freaking out. I'm currently approaching a deadline and have to get these photos off of these disks. Can anyone help? I have read about drives going out and this is definitely not a good time for this to happen. I do have some time but my deadline is June 4th so I need to get this taken care of ASAP. I do still have 2 years left on my warranty does anyone know if the drive is covered and if it can be replaced quickly? Thanks!
Power Mac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

No, the disks were not created on my drive. More than likely they were created on pcs. I have never had a problem reading mac or pc created disks before. One disk was created on my husband's toshiba laptop which I've done in the past with no problems. All of the disks I have I believe are DVD+R, so I do not know whether or not it will read other DVDs. The drive is a Pioneer 110. Thanks!

  • Superdrive won't write dvds anymore

I have toast and Popcorn - everytime I try to write a dvd I get a sense error message - this happens as it's trying to write the lead in - which suggests that the it is unable to write - any suggestions?

I did verify and repair permissions - how did so many get damaged? - but that made no difference - however your comment about media is spot on there appears to have been a few bad discs in the stack - I had successfully used about 80 of the 100 but then there were about 4 or 5 which gave the error message - now it seems to be working just fine again. Thanks for your reply

  • Superdrive won't read dvds, but will read cds?!?

My son was watching a dvd and the player quit. Then, it wouldn't read any dvd. But, it will read audio cds. I have no clue.

    Hi Marcus
It sounds like the DVD drive heads have gone out of position and the drive needs to be replaced. Contact your dealer or Apple.

  • Superdrive won't play burned DVDs

So now my SuperDrive won't play DVDs that were burned by my superdrive. It will play store bought DVDs, however its hit or miss with the burned DVDs, every once in a while it will recognize a burned DVD, but most of the time you can hear it trying to read the disc and then just ejects it...these are DVDs that I burned on this computer. What gives, I would think that it should be able to play burned DVDs, especially when they were burned using the same drive. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Is it me or does it seem like the quality of Apple Products has gone down over the years. I rarely had any issues with my older Apple Laptops, however, it seems like I'm constantly on this discussion trying to solve some sort of problem with this one. Thought I was upgrading when I bought this 17" PB, well I got a faster laptop, along with a bunch of headaches trying to fix it...somebody please give me some answers.

    The problem is 2 fold.
You must use good quality Media. Not bargin basement cheap media. This more than any other thing is a huge problem. I find that using 16X DVD-R Media. This is the most recognised of all media for player, and computer recognition.
Most users make there biggest mistake by buying cheap media and then can't fiqure out why they have a problem.
Next It is a Software problem. Apple's media can sometimes be a problem to learn and use and is very limited as to it's capability.
I find that if you plan on doing a lot of burning you need to have a top of the line software.
    http://www.roxio.com/
This software comes with several features, This software will burn
    Video TS
    Audio
    Data
And most importantly has an automatic compression feature, that will compress Video TS folders that are larger than 4.7gb to fit on a standard 4.7gb disc.
If you plan to do dvd burning here are 3 links that will not only back up what I have stated above, but gives all users a ton of important information.

  • DVD-R or CD-Rs won't mount USB Superdrive MBP 15 inch retina

    Dear all,
I have a MBP 15inch 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 running OSX 10.9.5 and purchased an Apple usb Superdrive to burn discs.  I have tried inserting Verbatim DVD-Rs and Maxell CD-Rs but they won't mount.  Looking on the fora, I have tried repairing disk permissions but that hasn't helped.  Apple's own superdrive troubleshooting article doesn't help either.  The discs are not ejected - once inserted the drive makes some noise then stops.  Using Disk Utility I can eject the disc.
    Baffled.

I've sorted it.  I just had to go to System Preferences and choose my preferences for when I inserted a blank disc.  Because the MBP doesn't have an internal disc drive, all the options were set to "Ignore".  I replaced this with "Open Finder" and - Hey Presto - the disc DOES mount now.  I can now successfully burn photos from Aperture to DVD-R.
