EMac System Disks- are they just copies of Tiger?
I've got two eMacs and packed away all the documentation and software together when I got them. I can't remember which set of disks belong to which machine- does this matter, or do they both contain a copy of Tiger?
Thanks a lot!
No it doesn't metter which set of disk belong to which machine because you have 2 same Macs. The label of your CD's show's you which MacOS X contain, and for what Mac are made for (eMac, iBook, pBook etc).

Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server system differences - are they critical
I need to make several virtual machines with MAC OS for QA testing. As only MAC OS Server can be virtualized, does anybody know, will it make a big difference with Desktop version of Snow leopard for testing of antivirus and firewall? The same question is actual for 10.5. Thank you in advance.
If anybody has an apple software QA experience, I would be grateful if you would share it and tell how did you solv such kind of problems. Were you ever able to solve this problem. I'm having similar issues since upgrading to snow leopard. Four macs connect to a Windows Server 2003 for shared files. Each user has full permissions & when we "get info" it shows read & write permissions. Two of the computers were running 10.4, two were running 10.5. Everything worked properly until upgrading to snow leopard. Some files let me copy, move, delete. Others either just hang up or we get a "no permission" error. Also getting a "pdf is in use" error, even when the file/folder doesn't contain a pdf. We had our IT rep check the server who said everything is in working order. They don't represent macs any longer but feel that it's a mac problem. I would have to agree since this problem only started after the upgrade, and the one machine that was not upgraded (still running 10.5.8) is not dealing with these problems.
Lastly, I would install 10.5 back on all of the computers if I could, but the leopard disk that came with one of the computers wouldn't work with the 2 machines running 10.4 and I didn't see it available at the apple store. I'll buy it if it's still available, but why wouldn't the disks that I have work?
Thanks for any help -
See title.
Yup. it's there.. it's nice to use once ya find it I guess if a person was on there everyday it would be breeze to find.) b

I have bid for a good-specification G4 on eBay and it looks as though I'm going to win the auction.
However, the seller tells me by email that no System Instal/Recovery disks are included.
If I win the auction I will have to buy it. Am I right in thinking that System Disks are specific to the computer they are originally supplied with? If yes, then this eBay Mac will only work until the day dawns when I need the missing disk/s. If no, then is there any possibility of Apple supplying the correct disks to me (if I win the auction) and if I can supply Apple with the registration number of the Mac (which is not difficult)?
Since there are so many people selling used/refurbished Macs on the internet (not just eBay) then someone else must have had this scenario before?Hi, StripedStep -
...OSX will not require a machine-specific OS9 instal.
Correct. However, getting Classic onto the drive can be an issue.
Since the machine is not OS 9 bootable, that means that any stand-alone OS 9 install CD (such as any retail OS 9 Install CD) will not be usable - the installers on those disks will work only when the machine is booted to OS 9.
You can copy an existing OS 9 install from another machine and place it onto the drive of the eBay G4. Best is to copy a working and bootable install of OS 9.2.x from another machine. This copy process can be done via drag-and-drop (Finder copy process); cloning is not needed. If you use an intermediate media such as a thumb drive, be sure that has been formatted as a Mac volume. -
I plugged my ipod shuffle first generation into my work computer (PC) and itunes deleted all the songs because of auto sync. I had checked the box to not sync with the itunes library because there were no songs in the library. But I guess auto sync was still turned on, and it "synced" all the songs off of my ipod. Are these songs recoverable anywhere or are they just gone?
Thanks,
Frustrated UserThe 1st gen (and 2nd gen) iPod shuffle does not have a mode where it automatically syncs to your iTunes library. It uses manual loading all the time (or the Autofill feature). So iTunes did not delete its content because of automatic syncing.
However, it can only be used with one iTunes library at a time. So, if you connect it to a different computer (with a different iTunes library), its existing content is erased. You should get a warning so that you can back out.
If you started using the shuffle with a different iTunes library, the songs that were on it are gone.
NOTE: The 3rd and 4th gen shuffles are different, and work more like the other "big" iPods. If it is set for Manually manage music, you can connect it to a different iTunes library without erasing the existing content. -

This may be a dumb question, but I can't seem to find any definitive information after having done many, many searches. Short question is - can Windows Server Backup spread a single backup job across multiple disks if they are not in a storage
pool or some other RAID/JBOD structure?
Background:
I'm running Server 2012 Essentials with all Windows Updates installed. I have been backing up approx 2.8TB of data (Bare Metal Recovery, C:, S: (shared folders), and system reserved) for the past year+ onto a storage pool made up of two-2TB external
USB drives. Backup is slow (takes approx 1.5 days to complete), but generally works. Not surprisingly I was constantly getting capacity low messages so I decided to increase my backup storage pool by adding a 3TB drive and another spare 750GB drive
for a total of 7.75TB. Instead of having four separate external USB enclosures, I bot a 4-bay enclosure - Startech.com model #S3540BU33E to simplify this (or so I thought!).
The first problem I had was adding the two new drives to the existing storage pool. I think that is because the Startech uses a JMicron USB controller that reports identical uniqueid's for all drives so only one shows up in the GUI interface for creating storage
pools. After doing research on this, I set up a new storage pool and virtual disk using all four drives via Powershell and thought I was good. However, when the backup ran, it failed after filling the first drive, saying there was no remaining capacity. In
reality there were three remaining empty drives and there storage pool reported almost 5TB of avail capacity. I assumed this was due to the identical uniqueid issue so I decided to try a different tactic.
Instead of using a storage pool that combines all four disks into one virtual disk, I just added each of them to Windows Server Backup as individual drives thinking it would manage them collectively. I.e., when a drive filled up during a particular backup,
it would just start using the next drive and so on. Apparently this was a foolish assumption because the backup failed again as soon as the first disk filled up.
So now I don't know if this is still an issue with the identical uniqueid's or if Server Backup actually can't spread a single backup across multiple individual drives that aren't in a pool or other virtual disk implementation. Hence, my original question.
My guess is that it does *not* spread them across individual disks, but I just wanted to get confirmation.
ThanksMandy,
Thank you for following up on my question.
Unfortunately the article you referenced doesn't address what I am trying to accomplish.
The article focuses on saving the same backup job to multiple disks and rotating the disks between on and offsite for enhanced protection. However, it still requires that an individual backup job fits on a single disk.
What I am trying to determine is if a single backup job can span across more than one physical disk (during the backup process) without those physical disks being in some type of virtual disk implementation (e.g., storage pool, RAID, etc.).
Thanks,

My 2009 Mac Pro with Highpoint RocketRAID 3522 would no longer boot of the disk array as it had before. Boots off internal HD (still running 10.6.2), sees the array in the Finder, both volumes there pass Disk Utility Repair Disk tests, they show up in System Preferences - Startup Disk. TechTool Pro 5.0.7 sees nothing wrong with the primary boot partition. (didn't try the clone still with 10.6.7) **** frustrating. Tried reinstalling latest firmware for card. Nothing reported by the drives in way of any failure. zapped the PRAM, tried booting with option key, it doesn't show the array but two copies of the internal HD. Running out of ideas. Any out there?
I am having the same problem with my HPT 4321. After upgrade, wont boot. Shows up everyone as bootable disk (even when holding option at startup) but Mac will not boot off it. I installed a fresh 10.6.8 copy onto a usb drive and HPT drivers work so might just be something to do with the main drive being bootable. To complicate things, the Snow Leopard DVD doesn't have the drivers to see the array so cannot use it for troubleshooting. It will not start in safe mode. Downloaded combo updater to try and re-update but it doesn't let you install it on another drive. HPT driver installer doesn't allow you to install on another drive so also can't re-install driver. Only choice seems to be install OS on new disk and recreate everything from scratch, then SuperDuper back to HPT drives and hope that it was a corruption during the update but not sure that it will boot even after all that work.
Anyone have a working computer with 10.6.8 and booting off a Highpoint RAID card? -
If photos are inmore than one album or event are they taking up twice as much disk space?
Is there a way to eliminate duplicates without doing it one by one?A photo exists in only one event. However, it can be in multiple albums, slideshows, books, etc. without taking up any additional disk space.
If you truly have duplicates in iPhoto, not as viewed via the Finder you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only diplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper. None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates. IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

Why won't my iMessage work with only one contact in my phone all my other iMessages send and they just got an iphone but all their iMessages are sending also. I've tried restarting my phone, deleting messages, contact, restarting network
Hello Jesslb23,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2755
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps first
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you have registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you have selected iMessage for use. Learn more about troubleshooting iMessage registration if the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. Learn more about troubleshootingcellular data or a Wi-Fi connection if a data connection isn't available.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn more about which network your phone supports. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while on a call if your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls.
Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you are still unable to send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Verify that the contact you are attempting to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and re-create the contact in the Contacts application. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.
Best of luck,

When I create a playlist and sync it to my iPhone not all of the songs on the playlist transfer over. All of the songs are there and are playable they just do not show up on the playlist. For example, in itunes on my computer a playlist has over 100 songs, but when I sync my phone, my iphone only shows 60 songs. I can go into my phone and add the missing songs to the playlist, but the next time I sync my phone the songs are gone again.
Wondering if you haven't been bitten by the new "feature" of iOS 5, as was my son. turingtest2 explained it very well in reply to my own query about "missing" songs in playlists.
Here's that thread...

I've downloaded some free apps on my iphone 4 and some of them have ads. I was just wondering, are those ads free as well, or are they using my internet when they pop up like that? i have to mention, i never click them.
Yes, they will use a very small amount of your internet bandwidth to display.

I have just recently bought a MacBook Air. I am looking for an email which I put into a folder on my Mac Pro. The smart folders have come across to the Air, but not the 'On my Mac' folders. Are they lost?
Are you sure that the "On My Mac" folders weren't empty? If all your mail accounts are IMAP, they may have been.
