EMac to iBook

My mom has a eMac and I have a iBook, there is a game on her computer what is too big for me transfer on a disc (1.44GB), but I heard I could use a USB plug or a Ethernet plug to connect the computers and transfer it that way, is that true? If so how do I do it?

Hello,
This procedure is simple and may take some time. Please make sure you follow these instructions carefully so you won't have to start over again.
You have two options. You can start your iBook in Target Disk Mode and just drop the game on there (faster method)
** PLEASE NOTE: If you choose this method, you need a 6 - pin to 6 - pin Firewire cord. **
ETHERNET:
1. Go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver
A) Make sure the computer does not go to sleep.
2. Go to Network -> Click Ethernet.
A) Click Appletalk.
B) Click Enable Appletalk.
C) Click Apply
** Now appletalk is on. Make sure you do this for each computer.**
3. Go back to System Preferences -> Click Sharing -> There should be something where you share your stuff. I don't remember what it should say.
4. Double Click Your HD -> Click Network -> Servers
5. Double Click Your Laptop
A) Enter your computer information.
B) Click your HD's Name.
** Now your HD should be mounted. **
6. Drag and Drop the game on to your hard drive. You can double click the hard drive and drop your things on there.
7. Your Done!
Firewire:
1. Shut down your laptop.
2. Connect your firewire cable to the firewire port on both computers.
3. Turn on your computer holding the letter T.
4. You should see your Hard Disk Drive pop up on the desktop on your mothers computer.
5. Find where you would like to save your game.
6. Drop it in there / Your done.
As you can see the firewire method is a little bit less painless, but you would have to purchase one if you don't have one.
Good Luck,
Grant

  • Will eMac or iBook DVDs intall Tiger on other machines ?

My Tiger DVD has a crack in it and it wont mount, and I need to install Tiger on a new drive.
Can I use a eMac or iBook Restore DVD to install TIger on a G4 or a Powerbook ?
I wouldn't necessarily need to boot from the DVD as I have Tiger on my boot drive/s, unless the DVDs require you to boot from them to be able to install....so I don't know if there's an issue.
(I just dont want to have to buy another set of Tiger DVDs since Leopard is coming out soon.)
    Thanks in advance.

You could clone the bootable drive to the new drive with a backup utility like Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
I don't think that a OS DVD that came with a computer will allow you to install on another type of computer. Although I don't think there's a hard and fast rule about that. Typically the restore DVD will restore the OS and all the bundled applications and hardware specific drivers.

  • Emac, imac, ibook installs

I have an emac(parent's) and an imac(mine) and am about to buy an ibook(for college), none of these have Tiger 10.4 on them, either Jaguar or Panther. If I get Tiger 10.4 to update them, will I be able to use it for 3 different computers, and if so, will the imac or ibook, since they are older, still run smoothly? Also, I am more than likely going to get Microsoft Office(eww) because I need it for school, can I install this on all 3, and will they all run smoothly still? Thank you.
imac, emac, ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

My husband recently installed (erase and install) Tiger on our 2 800mHz eMacs and we couldn't be happier. Both got iLife '06 at the same time and mine got PS elements4. Both of us feel that there is a noticeable increase in speed and we have had zero problems. Buy the family versions and upgrade them all. We had been stuck in 10.2.8 for years with 25,000 pix in iPhoto 2 and were afraid to upgrade due to all the problems we had heard about newer versions of iPhoto and losing album structure and so on. We aquired a used 12" iBook recently with panther and tried iLife '06 on it first. We copied our iPhoto libraries to an external drive, dropped them into the empty pictures folder, then opened iPhoto which proceeded to convert the libraries to version 6. Guess what? None of the probs we had heard about happened, and now weboth have identical copies of iPhoto on each of our computers.

  • Is a Airport Base Station Neccessary to WiFi tween eMac and iBook?

    Hi All!
Subject line says it all. I've an Airport card in my iBook that works very well outside, but I'd like to go online with it around the house via my eMac which has DSL but no airport card. Can my iBook access the web via my eMac if I bought my eMac an Airport card or is a Base Station a must? How can I set this up if possible?
    Thanks for any info!
    JimWG

    Hi JimWG,
Yes, it is possible (see this article), but using a wireless base station (router) is a better solution. For example, with an AirPort Extreme base station you would connect the DSL modem to the WAN port, the eMac to one of the LAN ports and the iBook wirelessly.

  • Going wireless on eMac and iBook

Three of us live in an apartment next to our friends who have wireless. My roommate's 2004 iBook is able to log in to the Internet b/c she has wireless capabilities. My 2004 eMac (which I believe is the 133 speed) was originally running on cable modem, but since we're trying to save a few bucks I'd like to go wireless. Is it just a matter of choosing the right card and installing it? My understanding is that it would take Airport Extreme. Furthermore, if I want to hook up my ibook (which doesn't have a wireless card) to the internet, can I just network it to my eMac once the card has been isntalled in the eMac? Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

You just need to install an Airport Card in your eMac.
Once your eMac is connected to the internet via Airport you can plug your iBook into your eMac with an ethernet cable and enable Internet Sharing via Ethernet. On your eMac go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet and Start Internet Sharing.

  • EMac as a PC monitor?

I have an eMac and iBook which I use for the majority of my work, but I also have an old Windows 98se PC I use for running Minitab. The problem is, the monitor of the PC is about to die, and the little use the PC gets (about 20 min. a week max.) doesn't warrant the cost of a new monitor!
I was therefore wondering if it is possible to rig up the PC to my eMac every now and again, and use the eMac as a PC monitor?
I have considered using an emulator (like Bochs), but I don't have the Windows operating system CD's, (because it was a PC from the skip!) nor do I have any experiance of installing software other than using the Mac Installer.
Does anyone have any tips or advice for me?

    Will Woodgate,
You can't hook the PC up to the eMac using a KVM (keyboard-video-mouse) switch to use the eMac video natively with the PC, as the video port on the side of the eMac is output only.
You could use the Mac to access the PC in a Virtual Network Connection (VNC) setup. This would be easiest to do if you have a multiport router between your computers and your Internet connection, where the router can be programmed to assign IP numbers in a limited range (as in two numbers, one for the eMac and one for the PC) or to assign specific IP numbers to each device. The idea is that the eMac should be able to find the PC at a specific known IP address, where the IP address is private (on your side of the router). That way you won't need to set up encryption on the VNC traffic. (VNC encryption is separate from password-pritected connections.)
You'll want to set up VNC server software on the PC and VNC client software on the Mac. The PC will then be accessible in the VNC client's application window on the Mac. That's not as fast as directly accessing the PC but with a private network it should be OK for anything short of high-end games, which given Windows98 isn't lilkely to be a real concern.
Windows 98 is listed as compatible with UltraVNC which you can use as the VNC server on the PC. (I've used UltraVNC on WinXP and found it surprisingly easy to set up and use.) The FAQs for UltraVNC are quite useful and should provide all the setup info you'll need.
You can use Chicken of the VNC as the VNC client on the Mac. Check the Control Panles> Network> Properties> TCP/IP> Properties button on the PC to confirm the PC's IP number, enter that in the Mac's VNC client with the VNC server running as a service on the PC. Running the VNC server as a service on the PC means it'll be running whenever the PC is booted up.
A router plus a pair of Ethernet cables, if necessary, will cost you rather less tan buying a new PC monitor. It's worth mentioning as another option that many businesses and users are only to happy to get rid of old CRT monitors they no longer need, since disposing of them properly is an extra-cost item (you can't toss a CRT in a landfill; the heavy metals in the CRT classify it as toxic waste). You could also call local companies, ask for their IT people, and inquire if they have any working but obsolete VGA monitor's they'd like to see hauled away for free.

  • Transferring from Tangerine Clamshell to iBook G3 - confused

Try as I might the information re: firewire and non- firewire hardware, crossover cable or ethernet cable, and Migration Assistant has me baffled. Here's what I need to do:
Transfer documents, mail settings, emails and mailboxes, iTunes library, browser settings & bookmarks, etc from a clamshell (no firewire) running 10.3.9 to an iBook G3 (with firewire) running 10.4.6.
I can't make out whether to use Migration Assistant because it's not the first time the iBook is being used (I travel with it but it's going to my son who owns the clamshell). Or whether to use crossover cables? I'm pretty sure a plain ethernet cable wouldn't do, would it?
Can anybody provide me with step-by-step?
    I'd be mighty beholden. . .
    eMac G4, iBook 600 mgz, 10.4.6, Mac OS X (10.4.6) Tangerine Clam 10.3.9
    eMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Connect the two machines with any Ethernet cable; the newer iBook G3 can use either Ethernet cable for this purpose, and if either machine can use either kind of cable for that purpose, you can use either cable. Enable File Sharing on the tangerine iBook from the Sharing pane of System Preferences, and then log into it from the newer iBook; you will need to know the tangerine's IP address, which can be found in the Network pane of System Preferences. To connect to a server, use the Finder's Connect to Server command, entering the IP address followed by the username and password of an administrator account on the other machine.
Once you have the whole disk mounted, locate your home folder on the other computer and copy individual files into the home folder on your current machine. If you want to copy the entire home folder, rename your current home folder in the Finder before beginning the copy.

  • Remove OS 9 from old iBook (G3)

I own an iBook (for over 3 years) - white, dual USB (G3) that came with OSX 10.2 & OS 9, allowing laptop to use either operating system. Is there a safe way to remove the OS 9 feature without doing a full OSX (ONLY) reload?

    Hi Joseph,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
I suggest you leave OS 9 on your hard disk. You might need it in the future in order to install firmware upgrades (for dual-boot systems they ship as OS 9 installers only). OS 9 does not take up a lot of disk space.
However, if you still want to delete it you have to perform a simple trick since you cannot delete it directly:
    1. Open the OS 9 systemfolder
    2. Type Apple-a or "select all" from the menu.
    3. Drag the contents of the systemfolder to the trash.
    4. Reboot
    5. Drag the systemfolder itself to the trash and empty the trash.

  • Tiger, ibook FWD question

    greetings
i hooked my Lacie FWD (via FW400) to my brother in laws ibook (10.4.3, i believe it is the 1.33) and the disk would mount and i could access all of my files just fine. my problem began when i tried to boot from my FWD via system preferences (yes it has a bootable volume of panther 10.3.5 with the latest FWD firmware update, i use it all the time on my emac just fine) i got as far as the spinning grey thing and then it would freeze. i had to shut down the ibook and unplug my FWD and then i would restart the ibook without the FWD hooked up. i would get the flashing ? in the folder for a second and then the ibook would boot up from the internal HD. every time i start up the ibook now the flashing ? folder shows up just for a second and then the internal HD starts up.tried repairing permissions on the internal HD but it didn't help.
    any ideas?
    bill

    Matthew
i had no idea that bootable clones were computer specific. my FWD has an OS that i installed on the FWD and not a clone of my emac. the ibook did come with tiger on it. again, i had no idea that an ibook couldn't boot to an earlier version of an OS than it has on it. i have tiger (10.4.2) on my emac now, although it shipped with 10.1.5 originally, it boots (from FWD's) 9.2, 10.1.5, 10.3.5 and my bootable clone of tiger. superduper is so awesome! no i have not gone back to check if the internal HD is selected now. i will do that tomorrow. i just assumed that it would default back to the option it has to boot from, being the internal HD.
    thanks for your reply

  • EMac memory upgrade

    Hi,
Do eMacs and iBooks (have 12-inch, G4, 1 Ghz) use the same memory modules? If so, I wanted to pull a memory stick from my iBook and move it over to our eMac.

If the computer's clock speed is 1GHz or below, it takes two 168 pin PC133 modules. Faster eMacs take 184 pin PC2700 RAM.
There were some non-cataloged eMacs made for the education market (briefly mentioned here) that had 1G processors but used the 167mHz USB 2.0 logic board. These machines are beginning to turn up on the used market.
With a 1G eMac, the only sure way to know what RAM it uses is to use System Profiler (About this Mac... > More Info...). The initial screen titled "Hardware Overview" will have a "Machine Model" line. If the machine model code is "PowerMac4,4" the machine uses PC133 RAM; if the code is "PowerMac6,4" it uses PC2700.

  • How do I transfer data from one external hard drive to another larger one?

I hope I am posting in the logical area for this topic. I have an external hard drive connected to my eMac. My iTunes library and some backup files reside on this hard drive. I am contemplating purchasing another, larger external hard drive so that I can archive more data--more music and some photos. How do I transfer my data from the first drive to the second one, and is this a risky move? (I have a lot of music!)

    Hello,
Take a look at SuperDuper (link). This 'clones' any drive across to another; it should suit your needs just fine.
Firewire drives with an Oxford chipset are recommended for PowerPC Macs (like the eMac and iBook) as you can boot the Mac from one to recover the system if the internal drive suffers any issues.

  • 2 airport extreme base stations later and still no internet connection-

Sorry - yet another beginner with internet connection troubles! (I have read all the posts I could find relating, but without any help).
I have had a Demon broadband account now for about a month (I’m in the UK) and in that time I have purchased a D-Link DSL-300T Ethernet modem and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I got wireless internet working relatively easily – with a powerful range over the whole house and garden, but then one Sunday night, the internet connection via the base station suddenly ‘died’.
I spent the following 3 days scrutinising all of my settings of both the Modem and the Base station, re-setting both, and bought new Ethernet cables / micro filters etc but with no luck. (I’ll point out at this stage that my broadband account is still active, and if I connect the Ethernet modem directly to my iBook [wired] I can still get my broadband connection. Alternatively, I tried daisy chaining the modem to the base station and then via an Ethernet cable to an iBook, but no connection could be made).
When wireless, Airport Admin recognises there is a modem there, and under preferences > network under Airport it states I am connected to the internet – but I’m not.
I then phoned D-Link and they confirmed my firmware was up-to-date for use with Apple products and talked me through all of the modem settings and tweaked a few things, but there was still no connection to the base station. I then phoned Apple. They were incredibly helpful (as ever) and after 35 min. came to the conclusion the base station might not be re-setting itself properly. The replacement one came yesterday, and again I spent a number of hours trying to get it connected to the internet, but there is still no internet connection via airport and I can confirm this from both my eMac and iBook.
Reading through the forums on here, I understand that my particular modem is problematic with the base station, but I can’t work out why it use to work and now it doesn’t! One theory I have investigated is that the firmware of the base station is two advance for the modem following an update, but after reinstalling the original firmware I started with, I still have no luck.
    - The eMac is running 10.3.9 / iBook is running 10.4.3. The base station is reinstalled with the latest firmware via system update. The first base station and the modem were delivered to me 31/10/05.
Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated if anyone has any ideas
    Thanks for your time

    Hi Don,
Thanks for you quick response. I printed off the instructions you posted on the support forum before, and ran through your procedue exactly, (twice) but I'm sorry to inform you that I haven't been able to re-establish my wireless internet connection. Would it be safe for me to assume at this stage that my modem is indeed fualty? It contines to work fine independantly, (I'm using it right now) but it can't seem to make contact with the basestation.

  • 29 Hits but no help...Can anyone assist me with this? Surely someone knows?

Anyone that can help it is truly appreciated. I just can't figure out how the ipod updates. I have 3 folders with different music...oldies, favorites, showtunes. I keep an exact copy of the playlist in I-Tunes. Let's just say I have 50 songs on my ipod in "Showtunes." I added 25 songs in I-tunes and added those 25 songs to my playlist. I then update my ipod by pulling the playlist from I-tunes onto the i-pod playlist. It says it is updating the 25 songs only. When I view the ipod thru itunes it has the new 25 songs and duplicates for all the others. When I unplug the ipod and view the songs there are a few duplilcates, but not all the same ones and not as many. I go thru and remove the extras on my ipod. Now there is basically just one song of each, but there are like 5 songs at the top not in any order and then it starts alphabatizing the rest. Could someone please tell me what the correct way to add music to my ipod is? Can I just pull over the new songs onto the ipod and will the old music stay just as it is? I was under the impression that i had to "Sync" it each time...whatever that is. Why can't this be simple and you just add or remove your songs you want. Please help, I am so frustrated. Thanks so much!

    Hi Gary,
Very confusing post, but I think I know what you are looking for. There are two ways to update your music on your ipod: manually and automatically. Automatically is probably the easiest and the best for your situation.
First, plug in your ipod to your computer and itunes should open up. Click on your ipod in itunes under devices. There should be 5 tabs at the top of the page (Summary, Music, Podcasts, Photos, Contacts).
On the Summary tab make sure that Manually manage music checkbox is NOT selected.
Click on Music tab ensure that the Sync music checkbox is checked and the All songs and playlists radiobutton is also selected.
Click on Apply at the bottom right of the screen.
From the File Menu select Sync "(name of your ipod)" and let the system sync it up.
When you make changes to the playlists, just make them in iTunes and when you are ready to transfer to your iPod, just plug in your iPod and it will sync automatically. If you are already plugged in and you make changes to iTunes, then go to File>Sync"(name of your iPod)" and sync from there.
Don't worry about making changes to your iPod manually. Do all changes in iTunes and let the computer sync them up.
    Good Luck
