EMac to iMac

I'm planning on getting a new 21" iMac for my girlfriend for Christmas. She currently has an eMac, about 7 years old. It is running 10.3.9.
The only things that will need to be transferred to the new machine will be Safari bookmarks, Mail settings, messages, prefs, and some documents. Everything else I will reinstall.
Awhile back on these forums, I was able to search and find a post that detailed the exact locations of the necessary files to copy over for Safari and Mail; I can't seem to find this information now. Maybe someone can point me to it. She will be the administrator and only user of the new mac.
She also has a huge backlog of saved email messages that she should go through and trash, but she hasn't done this in years. I guess I will have to copy these over to the new mac as well;hopefully these can be stored on the new mac safely until she gets around to weeding them out.
I'm a fairly experienced Photoshop and Final Cut Studio user, but I'm not sure how to handle this since I've never done it before.
Is Migration Assistant safe these days, to just copy the above mentioned files? Or should I do it another way? Thanks for any suggestions anyone can give.

Hi Mike, Here's what I believe is the list you mentioned you saw here some time ago. I copied it and saved it for my use in case I should need it sometime.
Important data locations
Following is a list of where your important data is stored. The "tilde" symbol "~" is an abbreviation for your Home folder. If you're unsure where your Home folder is, use your "Go" menu to take you there.
Your data in ~/Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist *This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
~ /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/Safari (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
~/Pictures/iPhoto library
~/Music/iTunes
~/Movies/iMovie
If you want cookies: ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
~/Library/Application Support/Webfoundation/HTTPcookies.plist
Some of that list has already been mentioned in Matt's post. I wish I could remember for sure who posted this list but I believe it was one of Kappy's posts.

  • Emacs and imacs noise?

How do you compare the noise emacs and imacs make?
The only thing I don't want for my eMac is the noisy fan. And maybe I'll switch for an iMac.
    Thank you

    eMacs are noise pollution city.
I registered the constant noise from a old eMac 800 mhz at being 73db.
    It drives you batty.
The iMac's are virtually silent, only making a slight kechunk sound when eatting and spitting cd's. You'll love it. They are quieter than most PowerMac G5's.
Problem right now is the new iMac's are intel processor based core duals, they are fast, but not a whole lot of software is ready for them natively yet, but will run at reduced performance using PPC based software under emulation (rosetta). Some games might not work either.
If you depend on Photoshop performance, Adobe might not have a native Intel version ready for another 14 months.
Coming from a eMac, the iMactel with Core Duo proccessors will seem very fast to you.

  • EMac to iMac - How do I transfer data when USB ports don't work?

I just bought a new iMac to replace my old eMac and I need to transfer the data from the eMac to the iMac - here's the problem - the USB ports on the eMac aren't working, the devices work fine like keyboard & mouse but the USB ports are dead. I can't hold down any keys as it starts up to make it a fire wire device etc. So how can I do this??
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • How do I combine double accounts after migration from eMac to iMac?

After using migration assistant I have two accounts, one for my old eMac and one for my new iMac.
Both were running Mac OS (10.5.7)
Also, the Mailboxes in the old eMac account are not in Mail any longer. Can they be found and restored?
    Floyd

    You are welcome!
For the log out issue have a look: "Apple / System Preferences / Security" and besure that the box for "Log out after ?? minutes of inactivity" is unhecked.
Then Run Repair Disk Permissions from this [How to Repair Disk Permissions|http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/05/14/how-to-repair-disk-permissions -in-os-x> link and test it for a day or so befor you reinstall the OS X.

  • Can't print from emac to imac

I try to print from emac to an old imac via a cable network. The imac runs on the latest version of panther and has an HP deskjet 990c printer connected via USB. The network printer can be seen on the emac.
I don't seem to be able to print though. Any idea why?
    Regards

Does the eMac happen to have the drivers and or the disc loaded on it. More often than not depending on the several different ways there is to do this sometimes it requires the CD be downloaded on both computers and even though you have sharing enabled if the drivers are not present the machine doesn't know what to do.

  • How do I import emails from my old eMac to iMac G5

I have recently upgraded to an iMac G5. I need to copy all my old emails (3 years worth) from my old eMac to the new computer. What options do I have? I don't want to copy anything else (applications or documents). I use Apple's Mail on both computers. Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    You're welcome.
If the eMac supports being connected to another Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode (which I believe it does), you can connect both Macs this way for the import and for manually transferring any and all data from the eMac.

  • EMac to iMac Comms

I've got an eMac connected to the Internet by a Cat5e Ethernet cable and router. The eMac also has an Airport Extreme cards installed just above the hard drive.
If I add a 24 inch iMac to my collection of machines will its internal wireless card be able to communicate directly with my eMac Airport extreme card or will some form of intermediary device be required (such as an Airport base station)?
Or would I be better off sticking with Ethernet?

You can use internet sharing in the sharing part of the System Preferences to extend the network by sending it out of the airport card in you eMac. No wires means an easy setup phisically. It will not share the internet connection from absolutely all routers, but will with most.
If you use ethernet, you will get faster file transfer between the 2 machines, so if that will take place a lot, I would consider ethernet.
    Karn.

  • EMac sharing iMac capacitor issue

    Hi iMac G5 owners,
I just thought it may be of some interest that the bad capacitor problem that resulted in Apple starting a Repair Program for the iMac G5 is now also affecting the eMac G4 1.25Ghz machine, which ceased production on the same month as the iMac G5.
Is there anyone here who was affected by this problem? How did you find out about the problem (ie that it wasn't just you)? Had Apple already instigated the repair program by the time your machine was affected?
    cheers
    Travis

    No offense taken, Eric, honest.
The reason I single out Mac first timers is because we are the underdog, and it would be fair to say they are taking a big leap from PC to Mac. The eMac was an ideal "first timers" computer - cheap, but still powerful, and pretty. There are a lot of people still looking for eMacs today, though from what I can gather they are education only, if available at all.
I don't know about US Consumer Law, but I am fairly sure that Australian Consumer Law states that a product should live through a reasonable life span. For example I had a car battery that died after 13 months. The companies warranty was 12 months. They were however obligated to replace it, as a car battery should last longer than 13 months. A computer I would think should last longer than 20 months.
I agree that time is needed for Apple to determine how many eMacs are affected, and if so, to ensure there are enough new logic boards available before going public with a repair program. It is just very disheartening reading the posts that just keep on coming in every day, and the only reply Apple has made to date was not words but actions - they deleted "our" attempt to make an official list of eMac serial numbers suffering this problem (the list simply was re-established on MacFixIt.com).

  • Exchanging files between eMac and iMac Intel ( GUID Scheme hard drive bug )

    Hi,
I have to exchange big file and folder regularly between 2 Mac ( Home and work ), before it was easy because both computer are eMac ( 700 mhz combo drive OS X 10.3.9 ) I used my firewire backup drive to transferred files.
Now I change my home computer for a new iMac intel, naturally I had to format my firewire backup drive to GUID scheme to be able to boot with, but now when I connect this drive to the eMac it refuse to mount; when I connect it to the eMac a window appeared asking to format the drive, when I check with Disk Utility the application see the drive but refused to mount it.
Is there a hack to force the eMac to read and write to a GUID scheme drive?
    Cheers,
    Luc

Macs running an OS earlier than 10.4.x can't recognize the GUID partition table. The easiest fix is to update the eMac to run OS X 10.4.8
There are tips online for formatting an external drive to be bootable for both Intel and PPC Macs (e.g. this link) but it appears those tips still require the PPC Mac to be running 10.4.x

  • EMac to Imac transferring programs etc

    Hope you can help
Will be upgrading this weekend and have lots of programs and files I'd like to move over including my itunes, iphoto etc etc.
I did have a search but got confused
Can anybody let me know the easiest way of doing this please
    Thanks

You'll need to authorize the new Mac to play any protected iTunes songs in your library. Once the transfer over is complete, if you're not keeping the old Mac, don't forget to deauthorize it from iTunes.

  • Exporting mailboxes from older emac to new imac

How do I transfer the many mailboxes I have set up to sort my email in mail from an old emac to a new imac. I currently connect using earthlink and when I opened the email in the new Imac the inbox came over, but none of my downloaded mailboxes or older emails came. Where does the emac store these files?
emac and imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

An Earthlink account is a POP account so messages available in the account's Inbox at the server will be downloaded only when creating the email account with Mail or another email client such as Mail on another computer.
User created "On My Mac" location mailboxes created in Mail are stored locally on the hard drive and although you used these many mailboxes created in Mail on your old eMac to sort/store messages received by your Earthlink account, these mailboxes have no association with the account at the incoming mail server level for Earthlink so will not be automatically created when creating your Earthlink account in Mail on your new Mac.
Since you did not use the Migration Assistant, you need to use the Import Mailboxes feature in Mail on your new Mac to import these user created mailboxes from Mail on your old Mac. All imported mailboxes will be placed in an Import folder that is created automatically by Mail and this process will not create these "On My Mac" location mailboxes that you created on your old Mac.

  • Moving Photos fro iPhoto on eMac to intel iMac

I loaded iLife '11 and now want to move photos and music from eMac to intel iMac. What is the safest, fastest and best way to do this?
    Thank you

Migration Assistant worked beautifully. Everything moved over like a charm. Both the eMac and iMac where on the same network in my home and worked perfectly.
My question now is, now that I have the eMac account on the iMac, how do I get the cool functions of the Dock (application and document included) on the eMac account that is on the iMac? The eMac account's Dock is boring and doesn't have the new funky feature that is apparently part of the iMac 10.5/.6.
I tried dragging Application from Finder over and it doesn't work (returns back to finder). Help....

  • 10.4.8 Versions...emac, imac, powermac, etc.

First off.....excuse my naivete! I'm not up on all the Mac lingo yet, but I like to think I'm getting there.
I'm new to this whole Mac thing and although I find it quite exciting to use and learn, one thing stands out in my mind. Why are there so many different versions of the same software 10.4.8? Emac version, imac version, g5 version, etc.
I have a G3 800 ibook, bought off ebay recently. Came with 10.4.8 installed, but no discs. Not a big deal.
DH bought a G4 400 tower, again off ebay. Again, came with 10.4.8 installed, but no discs. Not a big deal.
    Or so we thought.
We want to do a complete fresh re-install on his tower. But searching on ebay is getting frustrating. So many versions, and all different prices.
Is there a version out there than can be used across all types & kinds of macs? Or, can you use a version of software that doesn't correspond with your system? {For example...could we use an 'emac' version on my ibook and DH's tower?} I've found 'full version' discs that are priced high. And then there are 'emac version' discs that are considerably cheaper
I'd rather not have to purchase a set of discs for my ibook and another complete set of discs for his tower.
Sorry so long and winded, but this topic isn't something I've been able to find in the FAQ's or previous postings.
    TIA for any answers!!
    canadianmom....

Since you are purchasing used Macs and even though these Macs have the latest Tiger version installed - 10.4.8, it isn't a good idea to purchase a used Mac without the original install package that shipped with the Mac when new along with the Tiger install package used to upgrade the Mac to Tiger (which should be a retail install package) or just the Tiger retail install package.
A new Mac ships with additional software not included with the Tiger retail install package and if a used Mac was upgraded to Tiger over the OS and additional software included when the Mac was purchased and you need to reformat the hard drive for whatever reason, you will not be able to re-install any of the additional software included with this Mac when new and if the Tiger retail install package isn't included either, you can't run Disk First Aid repair, reinstall individual software included on the retail install package or perform an Archive & Install or an Erase & Install if needed.
So this is a big deal.
The Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac when new is model and build specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac unless the Mac is the same model and build included with the install package.
A Tiger retail install package can be used to install Tiger on any Mac model that meets the minimum system requirements but does not include any of the additional software provided on the install package that ships with a new Mac. No iLife package, etc.
Be careful when purchasing a Tiger install package via eBay. You need what is called a Tiger retail install package but a single user copy can be used to install Tiger on a single Mac only.
As already provided, you need to purchase a Tiger Family Pack which allows you to install and use Tiger on up to 5 Macs as long as they are in the same household by Apple's definition of household.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter doesn't fit my aluminum iMac

I previously had a 17" white iMac (pre-Intel) machine, and about 6 months ago I bought the mini-DVI to video adapter so I could connect it to my television. Worked like a charm. But I recently bought a new aluminum iMac, and the adaptor doesn't fit into the mini-DVI port in the back of the machine. It appears the adaptor and port are both male ends.
Has the port changed on the aluminum iMacs? The product description for the adaptor on Apple's website says it works with iMac (Intel Core Duo). Isn't the aluminum iMac an Intel Core Duo? I can't figure out why it doesn't fit and which cable I'm supposed to be using instead.
    Any advice would be appreciated!
